Book Description
Critical praise for A Concrete Approach to Mathematical Modelling "...a treasure house of material for students and teachers alike...can be dipped into regularly for inspiration and ideas. It deserves to become a classic."--London Times Higher Education Supplement"The author succeeds in his goal of serving the needs of the undergraduate population who want to see mathematics in action, and the mathematics used is extensive and provoking."--SIAM Review
"Each chapter discusses a wealth of examples ranging from old standards...to novelty ... Each model is developed critically, analyzed critically, and assessed critically."--Mathematical Reviews
Mike Mesterton-Gibbons has done what no author before him could: he has written an in-depth, systematic guide to the art and science of mathematical modelling that's a great read from first page to last. With an abundance of both wit and common sense, he shows readers exactly how the modelling process works, using fascinating real-life examples from virtually every realm of human, machine, natural, and cosmic activity. You'll find models for determining how fast cars drive through a tunnel; how many workers industry should employ; the length of a supermarket checkout line; how birds should select worms; the best methods for avoiding an automobile accident; and when a barber should hire an assistant; just to name a few.
Offering more examples, more detailed explanations, and by far, more sheer enjoyment than any other book on the subject, A Concrete Approach to Mathematical Modelling is the ultimate how-to guide for students and professionals in the hard sciences, social sciences, engineering, computers, statistics, economics, politics, business management, and every other discipline in which mathematical modelling plays a role.
An Instructor's Manual presenting detailed solutions to all the problems in the book is available upon request from the Wiley editorial department.

Of Power and Right: Hugo Black, William O. Douglas, and America's Constitutional Revolution
Howard Ball , and Phillip J. Cooper Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0195046129 |
Book Description
Hugo Black and William O. Douglas, two of the towering Supreme Court justices of this century, formed a fascinating personal and professional relationship that lasted for more than 30 years, from the 1930s to the 1970s. Together, they were embroiled in some of the most momentous social, political, and economic conflicts in American history. While many observers of the Supreme Court have regarded them as having a uniquely close alliance at the core of the Warren Court, they were quite different jurists, marching to very distinct drummers. Of Power and Right tells the story of this curious relationship and the turbulent era in which it took place. Hugo Black was a much admired, congenial man. A gracious Southerner, he could be as hard and immovable as granite once he'd made up his mind. An ardent advocate of free speech and press, he was a Puritan who had difficulty accepting behavior outside his own personal standard of morality. For him, the fundamental issue was the power of the people to govern, first through the Constitution, and then, where the Constitution was not clear, through their elected officials. William O. Douglas was a very different man. Tough and even petulant, he could also be extremely shy and sensitive. A staunch defender of the Court and its role, he was often willing to plunge it into the middle of society's most divisive debates. He believed first and foremost in individual rights, and believed that the Court's most important job was keeping government off the backs of the people. Though close on and off the job, the two men frequently clashed over this fundamental difference between power and right. The Black-Douglas years saw unprecedented social and political upheavals, from the New Deal and the civil rights movement to the Vietnam War, and the Supreme Court was called upon time and again to reexamine and often fundamentally alter definitions of equality and liberty in every area of American life. Howard Ball and Phillip Cooper chronicle each man's confrontation with the issues before the court and the often heated debates that resulted. They develop the central tension in American political life between democratically exercised power and individual freedom that so often occupied Black and Douglas and about which they so often differed. In so doing, the authors paint a full and compelling portrait not just of Black and Douglas, but of the institution of the Supreme Court during these years, showing us a Court that is more human, more politically aware, and more diverse than we have traditionally seen. The friendship of Hugo Black and William O. Douglas, and the differences that divided them, provide a unique window on the Supreme Court and the society it serves.

Mexican Gold Trail: The Journey of a Forty-Niner

Book Description
On February 20, 1849, twenty nine-year-old attorney George W. B. Evans set out from Defiance, Ohio, determined to make a fortune for his wife and family in the gold rush. He kept a painstaking record of his journey to California on one of the least known of the overland routes, crossing northern Mexico on the wild, little-used trail through Chihuahua and across the deserts of southern Arizona. Along the way, he faced many perils and hardships, including cholera outbreaks, Indian attacks, and long, waterless treks. Evans reached the Agua Fria diggings on the Mariposa Grant in late October that year but failed to strike it rich. Moving on to work as a customs inspector in San Francisco and then as an auctioneer in Sacramento, he became weakened by disease and overwork and died at age thirty one on December 16, 1850.

Book Description
In August 1906, Chauncey Canfield committed to his publisher a found text: the diary, ostensibly verified, of one Alfred T. Jackson, a pioneer miner who joined the Gold Rush from his home in Norfolk, Connecticut, migrating to Rock Creek, Nevada County, California, where he cabined and worked. The Diary covers two years of Jackson's life, and provides us with one of the richest documents of a period of perhaps unequaled importance to the expansion of the United States.Customer Reviews:

Tell Me What Home is Like: A Map/Memoir in Lieu of a Place
John Vore Manufacturer: Firetrap Inc. ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1891343009 |
Book Description
In the West, liberal education asks one to "Know Thyself". While writing his first book, Vore finds this to be a complicated road to travel, seeing quickly that to know himself, he has, as well, to know those around him. Vore thus examines his relationships to his family, school, mentors, and the labels by which he might be known: adopted son, adult child of an alcoholic, victim of priestly sexual abuse, spokesman for gay and lesbian civil rights, writer. In undertaking this self-examination, Vore runs squarely into the myth of Narcissus and realizes he must first understand its lessons before he can truly come to self-knowledge. Tell Me What Home is Like thus begins with a look at the myth, and Vore's discovery that it is not what it seems. Where others see a cultural warning and a label, Vore sees a prescription for how to handle one's ideas.
Utilizing this insight and ideas taken from Timothy Leary, Vore, through fiction and non-fiction, deconstructs himself and the power structures at the University of Notre Dame, structures in which he became entangled as a student speaking openly about being gay and the University's attempt to sweep under the rug a long history of sexual abuse by its former Provost, James Tunstead Burtchaell.
Tell Me What Home is Like recounts meeting Timothy Leary, Abbie Hoffman, Ken Kesey, Allen Ginsberg, Garry Wills, lovers, tricks and the friends who helped Vore survive his return to Notre Dame. The book also describes negotiations with Notre Dame administrators.
Vore ultimately realizes his road to self-understanding means finishing his book and getting out of Notre Dame as quickly as he can. He earned his Masters degree for the book in 1993.
Customer Reviews:
Coming of Age at Notre Dame.......2002-06-04
...The book was written in 1993 as a Notre Dame masterís thesis, and it shows signs of its academic origins. It contains sections of autobiography, fiction written for creative writing classes, and numerous letters, memos, and media articles, some written by people other than Vore. There are appendices, notes, and a list of sources. (No reader should skip Appendix Five, which contains an excerpt from the truly horrific letter Notre Dame spokesman Michael Garvey wrote to the National Catholic Reporter after that newspaper published its story on Fr. James T. Burtchaell's sexual abuse of students)...
...In writing about his own abuse at the hands of Burtchaell, Vore makes it clear that this brilliant but flawed priest is a symptom, not the source, of the problem. The serpent in the garden at Notre Dame was not James Burtchaell but the Holy Cross Order, or at least those members of the order who refuse to face sexual issues that no longer trouble most American high school students. In some of the most touching passages of the book, Vore relates how he came to forgive Burtchaell, whose fellow priests failed him when he needed them the most. Vore reserves his anger for two institutions, Notre Dame and HolyCross, and in this he speaks for many who have connections to the University...
John Vore has explored difficult personal and public territory and reported on his journey in a troubling and courageous memoir. How can we not admire the honesty and self confidence of a gay man who admits he had a "teen cult" of the awkward underdog Richard Nixon, who believed he too would some day be president of the United States, who loveda family
that could never fully accept him, who survived and forgave Burtchaell, who bears his breast about his desire to become the excellent writer this book proves him to be. I do not expect to read another book about Notre Dame that is the equal of "Tell Me What Home Is Like."
