Comprehensive book detailing buying/selling of businesses.......1999-07-12

Very comprehensive book addressing almost every situation that should be considered during a buy/sell transaction. Good overview of tax ramifications. Good sample language for all aspects of an agreement for the stock or asset sale of a business. Somewhat slanted toward the buyers' role, but not so much as to be unuseful to the seller. For the attorneys, CPA, etc., this is a good reference source. For the business owner who likes to look over his expert's shoulder, this is the book!

Not pie in the sky, or what should be, this book is based on over 100 interviews of people in Fortune 500 companies who are actually doing web-based training. This book is written for instructional designers, adult educators, training managers, human resource managers, and workplace educators who are developing their first web-based training program. The primary focus of the book is the design of programs for delivering training on the web while applying principles of adult education.

The CD-ROM contains five different resources, some of which are in addition to the book: worksheets, document and presentation templates, job-aids, and links to the WWW. The book features 24 self-study exercises to help readers reflect on what they are learning.

Why to Buy This Book.......2001-05-04

There is only one good reason to buy this book: it is required for your degree plan. It tries to cover instructional design and web based training, but does neither well. For example, Driscoll spends a lot of text explaining the difference between a Virtual Synchronous Classroom and a Virtual Asynchronous Classroom. She describes each in great detail. The difference: in the first, all students participate simultaneously; in the second, they participate at their own convenience. For instructors, the difference lies in the amount of time spent monitoring the class. Other topics are chunked to the point of becoming meaningless.

After six years of higher education and 10 years training adults, this is only the second book I have ever wanted to sell at the end of a semester.

Enjoyed the Book, Look Forward to Using It!.......2001-04-17

Margaret Driscoll's " Web-based Training, Using Technology to Design Adult Learning Experiences," provides the experienced ID or IT professional an authoritative and useful guide to developing a successful Internet training program. Only two suggestions are made on how to improve this guide. More information on the characteristics of the adult learner could be added, and a separate chapter covering Project Management for web-based training development would be a valuable topic for many readers (especially covering budgeting, resource selection, and scheduling). However, Ms. Driscoll speaks with an authoritative voice, does it clearly, and provides the information in a format that is easy to use. Margaret Driscoll also addresses the importance of curriculum quality, a message that should be voiced more often in our IT degree programs, "Web-based training is about training. This seems obvious, but it is not clear in many WBT programs. It is too easy to be caught up in the hype and hoopla of the technology, and lose sight of designing effective training" (Driscoll, 1998, pg. 234). This fine book would serve well as the basic textbook for a college level course on web-based training.

To WBT or not to WBT.......2000-06-17

I am an instructional designer for a software development company in Boston. We have at least four copies of Ms. Driscoll's book in the department. It's given us a common vocabulary and structure for planning our WBT training strategy. It's helping us make decisions on when to use WBT, and which WBT tools we should use for various training programs. Highly recommended.

If you are planning any type of computer training, this book can serve as a step by step guide. It has worksheets and practical guidelines in the book that are replicated in a Microsoft Word format on the CD so that you can simply copy and use the format. They even include demonstrative PowerPoint presentations on the CD to help you setup kick-off meetings, design team meetings and an executive overview strategy.

Outstanding learning aid AND toolkit.......2000-01-30

Web-Based Training by Driscoll is outstanding because it puts the mechanics of web-based training into the context of good learning design. Too often the principles of instructional design are ommitted from resouces like this one. Driscoll provides the reader with the needed conceptual understanding, and then follows through with practical "how-to" tools to guide the reader through the process. Superb resource.

Godard displays all his unimaginable masterful in this set of reviews originally written for Les Cahiers du Cinema in the far Fifties .
The charm , of this enfant terrible is present all alnog the text .
The reviews about Orosn Welles , Ingmar Bergman , Francois Truffaut , Mizoguchi and his favorite western Seven men from now of Budd Boeticher (I have not watched it) are specially revealing .
Acquire this book , because despite the fact you may argue these reviews are dated , constitute - and who denies? - a crucial period in the cinema story .

Godard and Films.......2000-02-01

I've just read the book and though it dragged at some points because I wasn't familiar with a couple of the films he was talking about it, the overall experience was uplifting. If you have the slightest interest in Godard and the New Wave read the book and get inside a New Wave director's head and see how he looks at films. The book contains a number of his Cahiers du Cinema reviews and articles, and some interviews he gave later in life. By the end of the book you finally begin to understand a little of how this genius thinks.

Very Entertaining Novel.......2002-11-29

Bill Boyd spins a good tale. "Bolivar: Liberator of a Continent," is a great book to read on a long flight or next to a warm fireplace on a cold winter evening.

The author is a graduate of Yale and a scholar of Latin American history. He uses his vast knowledge of South American history to weave fact & fiction into a fasination account of a true "American" hero.

In the author's note at the beginning of the book Boyd explains he uses historial documents and official archives for his personalities and actions. To that end, the dialogue in this book is excellent. It brings Simon Bolivar to life and makes this book a great read.

Simplistic biography.......2002-02-03

When reading a biography, one hopes to learn about the subject and its times. This book provides neither; it describes certain events but fails miserably to describe Bolivar's possible motives for engaging in his quest. It also fails to describe the political realities of the times. The only attempt is made when the author describes his teacher Simon Rodriguez's influence on young Simon. But even then, the author analysis is simplistic and totally off the mark, it attempts to convey the notion that the revolution was the result of a class struggle a la Bolshevik, when in fact all revolutions in the Americas were rebellions against exploitation and taxes from Europe.

Boyd's Bolivar Narrative.......2001-11-18

Bill Boyd's Boviar: Liberator of a Continent contains fictional dialogue that sometimes reads like it was written for a Broadway musical; however, this thoroughly researched biography reads quickly and gives a genuine sense of the major players involved. Just as the pivotal revolutionary battle of Ayacucho, between Bolivar's army and the Spanish, remains a decisive moment in history, it and the events surrounding it serve as the narrative's pinnacle. The author gives generous treatment to Bolivar's governance after his successful campaigns to liberate the continent, but this should not enhance anyone's cynicism as to the greatness of this man, which Mr. Boyd deftly describes in the epilogue. The book also contains a informative postscripts which thoroughly secures Bolivar's legacy as every officer under his command went on to serve as a major political figure on the continent, a good portion of which were respectively elected president.

Readers should be warned that this book is written like it was meant to be read for the 8 to 12 year old age group. It is not only dramatized, it is also simplified and childish at times. The back cover says it all.

Oral History at Its Best.......1999-11-03

Broughton's book is a collection of almost 40 stories of people who helped develop aviation in the U.S. You'll only recognize a few names (EAA's Paul Poberezny among them), but they are a mix of men and women who were there when great events happened. One helped Wilbur and Orville Wright in early test flights; unaware of what was happening, one was flying a mission nearby when Nagasaki was devastated by the atomic bomb; several tell details of experiences as fighter pilots.

Broughton's book doesn't have a theme or direction -- it simply tries to bring out the most-significant accomplishments of each flyer's life. It starts with the early days of flight, progresses through time and ends with a story of space flight and one from the Vietnam War.

True stories of gutsy, innovative pilots........1998-09-03

This book tells the story of real pioneers in the field of piloting. Some of their experiences would shock today's pilots. Without the dash and daring of these pilots we wouldn't be where we are today in the diverse fields of aviation.

HANGAR TALK flies high!.......1998-07-08

I thoroughly enjoyed Irv Broughton's HANGAR TALK. His interviews with pilots from the early days of flight to those involved in the gulf war conflict provide a fascinating oral history of flight. Broughton has written a brief reflection on each pilot's life and significance to flight, followed by a series of inquisitive questions that allow the pilots to reflect back on their adventurous lives. What was especially enjoyable about this book was reading about the many facets of aviation. The early barnstormers daring willingness to land their planes almost anywhere has always amazed me. There aren't many people left who witnessed the beginning of flight and the early developments. HANGAR TALK has interviews with pilots whose roots go back to the earliest pioneers of flight. Interviews with crop dusters, bush pilots, and experimental aircraft designer/pilots are also included. Of course, pilots involved in the wars provide a higher percentage of the drama in this book. Many stories of combat flying and flying related to the military portray the courage of those that served our country. This is a book about extraordinary people, many who influenced the development of flight. I highly recommend this book to all interested in aviation.
