Book Description
Public Venture Capital is an invaluable resource you will use again and again when seeking an inside track to government dollars. Relatively few entrepreneurs are aware that government funds from programs with acronyms like SBIR, ATP, Dual Use, ManTech, DARPA, and Act II can provide both initial and later-stage venture capital for their companies. Moreover, public venture capital programs do not require equity in exchange. Funding is available to technology start-ups and innovative firms through a variety of government programs.
The purpose of this book is to familiarize you with the concept of public venture capital and to illustrate how to use the above-mentioned programs to fund technology endeavors. Public Venture Capital brings together information and resources on programs that make funds available to technology entrepreneurs and innovative firms on a competitve basis. Whether your interest is in a specific project or technology idea or you are looking for more general information regarding public venture capital, this book will be specifically helpful to you.
Public Venture Capital provides insight and helpful hints - based on interviews with successful applicants and current program officers - on how to win government funding awards. More important, it provides the tools needed to gain access to revelant programs and people.
This book is organized to allow you to go from broad topic areas to your specific areas of interest. For example, if you have a specific project in mind you can go to the Science and Technology Index and spot where your project fits in. From this starting point you will be guided elsewhere in the book to find leads for making appropriate contacts, to find more information about current programs in your field, and to learn how and why these programs were founded.
In contrast to private venture capital, government is not trying to earn a profit. Its objectives are to generate jobs, to assist the growth of the economy, and to increase tax revenues in the long term. Thus, government programs may offer funding to a broader range of technologies than do private venture capital firms.
You'll even receive lists of agencies, proposal preparation kits, lists of resource centers, list of Web sites, policy guides for specific agencies, sample proposals, and more on the FREE companion CD-ROM!

Change-ABLE Organization : Key Management Practices for Speed & Flexibility
ASIN: 0883902362 |
Book Description
The weekly staff meeting is a problem for many managers. It seems necessary, yet it never seems to have much vitality. Members often show signs of reluctance to attend, boredom during the process and an eagerness to leave. If the manager cancels the meetings, people complain about poor communications.
In fact, regular meetings are important to the health and vitality of your organization's culture and capacity to deliver. The ability to lead them has been recognized as one of the critical skills of effective management. For some managers these meetings promote clarity of purpose and teamwork. However, why they work for some managers and not others has not been widely understood. Until now.
Group Power II provides sound direction on how to make these regular meetings useful and purposeful. By following the principles set out in this book, managers will find that their regular meetings become an event, a place of enthusiastic participation. These meetings will be a forum where everyone contributes and decisions are made that keep departments and tasks moving toward their goal.

Geometric Algebra for Computer Science: An Object-Oriented Approach to Geometry (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Computer Graphics)
ASIN: 3540411984 |
Book Description
Clifford algebra, then called geometric algebra, was introduced more than a cenetury ago by William K. Clifford, building on work by Grassmann and Hamilton. Clifford or geometric algebra shows strong unifying aspects and turned out in the 1960s to be a most adequate formalism for describing different geometry-related algebraic systems as specializations of one "mother algebra" in various subfields of physics and engineering. Recent work outlines that Clifford algebra provides a universal and powerfull algebraic framework for an elegant and coherent representation of various problems occuring in computer science, signal processing, neural computing, image processing, pattern recognition, computer vision, and robotics. This monograph-like anthology introduces the concepts and framework of Clifford algebra and provides computer scientists, engineers, physicists, and mathematicians with a rich source of examples of how to work with this formalism.

Book Description
Stressing the interplay between theory and its practice, this text presents the construction of linear models that satisfy geometric postulate systems and develops geometric topics in computer graphics. It includes a computer graphics utility library of specialized subroutines on a 3.5 disk, designed for use with Turbo PASCAL 4.0 (or later version) - an effective means of computer-aided instruction for writing graphics problems.;Providing instructors with maximum flexibility that allows for the mathematics or computer graphics sections to be taught independently, this book: reviews linear algebra and notation, focusing on ideas of geometric significance that are often omitted in general purpose linear algebra courses; develops symmetric bilinear forms through classical results, including the inertia theorem, Witt's cancellation theorem and the unitary diagonalization of symmetric matrices; examines the Klein Erlanger programm, constructing models of geometries, and studying associated transformation groups; clarifies how to construct geometries from groups, encompassing topological notions; and introduces topics in computer graphics, including geometric modeling, surface rendering and transformation groups.

Book Description
Bruce Cutler, one of the most famous lawyers in America, has never told his story—until now. Best known for his tenacious and highly publicized defense of John Gotti in the 1980s and early 1990s, Cutler personified a confidence, passion, and legal thoroughness that repeatedly defied a government determined to bring Gotti to his knees. A ubiquitous presence at Gotti’s side in and out of the courtroom—and on the front pages of newspapers around the country—Cutler became almost as infamous as his client. And, as John Gotti became a lightning rod for every prosecutor seeking glory, reputation, or promotion, Cutler too became a lightning rod for controversy. According to the feds, Bruce Cutler may have gotten too close, and they made sure that both he and his client paid the price.
Cutler, the son of a detective turned lawyer, resolved his choice of profession early in life and plunged headlong into the tumultuous and at times surreal world of the New York legal system. In
Closing Argument, Cutler recounts his time as an aggressive, tireless assistant D.A. in Brooklyn; how he switched sides and became a fiercely dedicated defense attorney working with Barry Slotnick, one of New York’s
premier criminal attorneys; and the path that led him to John Gotti’s side in court. It was March 28, 1985,
to be precise: He was thirty-six years old, and it was a moment that would change both men’s lives forever.
Closing Argument is the inside story of how Bruce Cutler and John Gotti frustrated the feds so much
that they finally had to break the rules themselves to convict the so-called Teflon Don. The years Cutler and Gotti spent together were a kind of golden age of criminal (and in particular organized crime) litigation, and both lawyer and client were at the red-hot center of it all. What neither man may have realized then is that the famous trials were mostly about the government’s wanting to put an end to a certain way of life, one that John Gotti and his like embodied. The conviction of Gotti, and his subsequent death in 2002 while serving a life sentence in solitary confinement, marked the end of an era.
Closing Argument is a glimpse into the world of John Gotti: the talk around the table at the notorious Ravenite social club; the murder of Paul Castellano; Gotti’s feelings about the treachery of Sammy “The Bull” Gravano and the alleged betrayal by Wilfred “Willie Boy” Johnson; and what it took to make it in a world with its own set of unbreakable rules.
This fascinating document makes clear that Gotti and Cutler were perfectly matched. Their inability to compromise, their full-throttle approach to their defense, and the charisma that made them the favorites of the press, were their strengths and, ironically, what made them such inviting targets to a host of prosecutors.
Bruce Cutler, in typical style, pulls no punches in
Closing Argument. It is very rare for a practicing lawyer to talk with the kind of candor he does here, and it is rarer for any lawyer to ever become as passionate
and emotionally involved as he did with his client, John Gotti.
Customer Reviews:
Give me a break!.......2003-10-15
Bruce Cutler is a self serving loud mouth who spends an entire book telling us what a great lawyer he is. Given the allegations of jury tampering (which was the reason he was banned from representing Gotti a third time and may be the reason Gotti was acquitted the first two times) and his pitiful track record anywhere else where the true practice of law is required, it is no wonder he wrote a book - no one who values their rights and their freedom would hire this guy.
Courtroom Gladiator and Bare Knuckles Champ.......2003-03-30
The cure for everyone tired of slick lawyers whose business cards should say "Have Word Processor, Will Travel." Cutler is the Method Actor of the Bar. He tries cases from the inside out, with no cynicism, no patronization of the jury, and no distaste for the client hidden under a barrel of glib professionalism. Cutler lays his thoughts and feelings bare in this book, and it's an inspiration. If you're in law school, reading it may remind you why you bothered. If you're in practice, it will inspire you to try cases. If you're a gangster, it will make you check your address book to see if you have Cutler's number. For everyone else, a hugely entertaining, edifying book about America, the legal system, the System, and a guy who has the b--ls to buck it and often win.

Certain images connected with the civil rights movement of the 1950s and '60s are branded in the collective consciousness of the nation: dogs and firehoses turned on African American protesters in Birmingham, the faces of the four young girls killed in the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church, and the National Guard escorting black teenagers into Little Rock's Central High School in September of 1957. At the time of Little Rock's desegregation, Arkansas governor Orval E. Faubus ensured his place in history by defying federal court orders and blocking integration, thus forcing President Eisenhower to call out the National Guard. Faubus was certainly not the only southerner who vociferously opposed integration--George Wallace of Alabama and Lestor Maddox of Georgia (among others) also jumped on the bandwagon--but what's unusual about Faubus is that he started out as a racial liberal. Surprises abound in Faubus, a fascinating biography by Roy Reed.
Reed's book does double duty, revealing the personal history of Orval Faubus and exploring the labyrinthine ties between politics and business still operating in Arkansas today. Faubus is a cautionary tale about good intentions gone bad, principles subsumed by ambition. How Orval Faubus, a one-time racial liberal, could have invoked the race card in 1957 and continued to play it for another decade is but one of many intriguing questions Reed attempts to answer. But Faubus has implications beyond the life of just one man; its lessons about the corrupting influence of power, money, and big business could as easily be applied to any number of the political scandals rocking the nation today.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent account of an interesting character.......2005-05-14
This is a well-done biography of an important character in the civil rights struggle. It gets only four stars, though, since it has no bibliography and its source notes are skimpy and not indicated by footnote numbers. Faubus was born in poverty and named Orval Eugene, with the Eugene being in honor of Eugene Debs, prominent Socialist leader admired by Orval's father. In Orval's youth he flirted with socialism and later lied about it in his political campaigns. When he saw the fierceness of reaction involved with the integration of Central High School in Little Rock, he ignored the rightness of the integration decision and plumped onto the side of the racists. If he had done otherwise he no doubt would not have been governor of Arkansas for 12 years (1955-1967) even though he would have been on the side of decency and right The years when Faubus was governor were hard years for fair-minded people, though a bit later, Dale Bumpers showed that decent people could be elected in Arkansas. It is interesting to contrast Faubus' career with that of Dale Bumpers (told with a light touch in Bumpers' engaging memoir, The Best Lawyer in a One-Lawyer Town), but Bumpers came along a bit later and was able to be elected despite the racist tenets of some of his constituents. This book is well worth reading.

Book Description
Mary MacLane became an overnight sensation when she published this book in 1902. She was 19 years old and lived in the rough-and-tumble, masculine mining town of Butte, Montana. This book is a breath-taking tour de force about life, love and longing as fascinating today as it was shocking when it was first published. This edition with an added introduction by Dr. Julia Watson whose insight into Mary MacLane makes the book an even more compelling read.

Book Description
Few books in US history have provoked more outrage and debate than The Story Of Mary Maclane did when it was first published in Chicago in 1902. With unprecedented frankness, the 19 year old author revealed her utter scorn for conformity and puritanism, her refusal to accept what she regarded as the stifling boredom and pettiness of middle class life, and her passionate insistence on sexual freedom, a life of adventure and excitement. Not for nothing has she been hailed as the first 'New Woman' in literature, the first flapper and a precursor of surrealism. This lively collection features the complete text of that signature work, plus a generous selection of her other writings, reprinted here for the first time; and edited and introduced by Penelope Rosemont. Two special sections focus on her short but sensational movie career, and her long association with the city she eventually chose as her home, and includes critical appreciations of her work by other Chicago writers: Clarence Darrow, Henry Blake Fuller and Harriet Monroe. "The Story Of Mary Maclane is little short of a miracle. No more marvelous books was ever born of a sensitive, precocious brain." [Clarence Darrow]

Hidden Treasure.......2001-11-25
I own an original first edition of this book, which I scrounged up after first reading some excerpts in a book of writers who were allegedly insane and then researching Mary MacLane -- including some historical information from the Montana Historical Society. This is one of those wholly odd books that one sort of just needs to experience. The is-it-fact-or-fiction diary of a 19 year old girl in Butte, Montana at the turn of the century, The Story of Mary MacLane went on to garner raves and revulsion alike.

Book Description
Born in Saskatchewan in 1917, Gordon Robertson worked at the centre of government power from 1945 until his retirement in 1979. He worked directly with Prime Ministers King, St-Laurent, Pearson, and Trudeau, serving as senior advisor to the latter two. Commissioner of the Northwest Territories from 1953 to 1963, he also became the first Deputy Minister of the new Department of Northern Affairs under Jean Lesage. In this memoir he presents a first-hand account of the events and personalities that shaped Canada during the critical post-war period.
Robertson tells of Canada's development from colony to nation and the prime ministers who presided over the process. He provides an assessment of each prime minister in action: how they organized the cabinets, what their qualities were and how these related to their failures and successes. Himself influential in many areas of government, Robertson played a key role in the long debate on constitutional reform and national unity. Even after his retirement, he remained active as an unofficial contitutional networker.
Gordon Robertson has written no ordinary memoir. Along with the key events and personalities of his day he describes the development of his own ideas about the nature of Canada and its constitutional future. The result is a significant historical document, one that brings much insight to the history of post-war Canada.

Book Description
Jeremy Simmons is a real estate broker in Chicago. Escape From the Steel Cocoon: Acceptance of My Homosexuality is the first book of two the author has written. The author is sharing his life story in the hope that other gay men and women will be able to identify with his process of coming to terms with his life and identity as a gay man. Mr. Simmons believes that the most important knowledge a person can have is that he or she is not alone in whatever way they feel. We are not unique, nor are we the first person to feel the way we do. We also won’t be the last person to experience what we do.
