This book is an abridged version of the two volumes "Convex Analysis and Minimization Algorithms I and II" (Grundlehren der mathematischen Wissenschaften Vol. 305 and 306), which presented an introduction to the basic concepts in convex analysis and a study of convex minimization problems. The "backbone" of both volumes was extracted, some material deleted that was deemed too advanced for an introduction, or too closely related to numerical algorithms. Some exercises were included and finally the index has been considerably enriched.
The main motivation of the authors was to "light the entrance" of the monument Convex Analysis. This book is not a reference book to be kept on the shelf by experts who already know the building and can find their way through it; it is far more a book for the purpose of learning and teaching.

Convex Analysis may be considered as a refinement of standard calculus, with equalities and approximations replaced by inequalities. As such, it can easily be integrated into a graduate study curriculum. Minimization algorithms, more specifically those adapted to non-differentiable functions, provide an immediate application of convex analysis to various fields related to optimization and operations research. These two topics making up the title of the book, reflect the two origins of the authors, who belong respectively to the academic world and to that of applications. Part I can be used as an introductory textbook (as a basis for courses, or for self-study); Part II continues this at a higher technical level and is addressed more to specialists, collecting results that so far have not appeared in books.

A fantastic introduction to convex analysis and optimisation.......2001-06-13

Convex Analysis and Minimisation Algorithms by Urruty and Lemarechal is a gentle but comprehensive introduction to finite dimensional convex analysis. This book is part of Springer's series on Comprehensive studies in Mathematics.

Volume I deals with convex analysis (convex sets, convex functions, sublinearity and support functions, subdifferentials of convex functions and minimization algorithms for smooth convex functions) and the companion volume II deals more with nonsmooth optimization and bundle algorithms to solve such problems. The theory is developed rigorously with many intriguing examples and figures to illustrate important concepts. As the authors mention in their introduction the minimisation algorithm suggested by Einstein "Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler". The two volumes are fairly comprehensive (and as a disclaimer the contents are by no means elementary, and will require a sustained effort on the part of the reader).

One can then take on the likes of Rockafellar and Wets' "Variational Analysis" and Borwein and Lewis' "Convex Analysis and Nonlinear optimization, two other recent works in convex analysis and optimization.

Los autores han realizado un gran esfuerzo para lograr un libro claro, del cual se puede aprender. Hay mucha información, muchos ejemplos, muchas gráficas. Este libro, junto con el Convex Analysis de Rockafellar no deben faltar en el escritorio de toda persona que se dedique al análisis convexo o a la optimización. Es un texto largo, se necesita al menos un año para estudiarlo, pero vale la pena.

Lemarechal and Kiwiel introduced the bundle method in the 80's as a means to optimise nonsmooth convex functions. Recently Christoph Helmberg developed a spectral bundle approach to solving semidefinite programs, by rewriting SDP's with a constant trace as eigenvalue optimisation problems. The Spectral bundle methods outperforms the traditional interior point approaches to SDP's as these methods are typically unable to handle large SDP's with a large number of constraints.

Interesting read..........2007-09-30

The struggles and hardships survived by this family should make us think twice about whining when we've had a bad day at the office, the dog throws up on the carpet, there's a traffic jam on the way home, the cable guy is four hours late, or any of the other happenings we find annoying in our modern lives. (how about that three-day trip to town and back?) As an animal lover, I skimmed over the semi-graphic descriptions of trapping animals. Other than that, an enthralling read.

I was turned on to this book by the authors great nephew. This woman's tale of hardship, perseverance and determination is one to be admired by all. An easy read and a wonderful adventure.

How the personal informs the political in the Aloha State........2002-05-14

I was fortunate to spend about half my pre-college years in Hawai`i, nearly all of which time coincided with the three terms of Hawai`i's longest serving elected governor, George R. Ariyoshi. And so although he and I have some significant political and philosophical disagreements, I enjoyed this chance to learn a little more about a man who was always something of a feature of my early life, and put some vaguely remembered controversies into better focus.

Like all memoirs (especially ones by politicians) there are self-serving elements to this book that make it worth reading with a grain or two of salt. At the same time, though, Governor Ariyoshi's focus really isn't on refighting old battles (in fact, I wish he'd gone into a little *more* political detail than he did). Instead, he's more interested in examining how his background as the son of Japanese immigrants, but born and raised in the unique political and cultural setting of Hawai`i, colored his worldview and approach to public service. 'Warm' and 'human' are the sorts of words reviewers always use for books like this, and I think they apply here. This is an interesting, informative, and at times, touching, book.

This book reveals some fascinating contradictions, not only in Hawai`i's political world, but also in Ariyoshi himself. For all his focus on compromise, moderation, agreement, planning for the future, and so on, Ariyoshi is an intense partisan. He is a loyal Democrat Party man, and his references to the Republicans are almost always derogatory. Toward the end of the book, for example, he describes the work of 'transform[ing] Hawai`i from a politically backwards territory to a progressive, multiracial state,' as 'the most essential accomplishment of the Democratic Party' (p. 200), as though social progress can only occur through the hand of government, and even then only if that hand is Democrat.

That brings us to an issue I wish Ariyoshi had addressed more directly -- an issue that is, in fact, the central fact of political life in the Fiftieth State: the state is ruled (it's not too strong a word) by an 'iron triangle' of Big Labor, Democratic Party politicians, and a bloated State bureaucracy. Ariyoshi admits (p. 199) that Hawai`i is essentially a one-party state, but --typically, though not entirely incorrectly -- blames the GOP for their own irrelevance.

He breezily dismisses criticisms of Hawai`i's regulate/socialize/bureaucratize/tax tradition as 'continental modes of thinking' (p. 126), without explaining why a free market is somehow unsuited for the Island State. Indeed, he notes that 'In Hawaii we have a tradition of highly centralized government that can be traced to Kamehameha's wars of conquest and the formation of the Hawaiian kingdom' (p. 128) -- an argument that reduces to little more than 'We do it this way because we've always done it this way.' Throughout the book, whether he is addressing the 1970s 'energy crisis,' economic development, affordable housing, diversification of agriculture, limiting the adverse impact of tourism and 'in-migration,' and the rest, the solution always -- always -- involves government.

In short, *otagai* -- 'We are obligated to one another' -- may well be true. But why that obligation needs to be met through the coercive force of government is a linkage Governor Ariyoshi leaves largely unaddressed. At one point, he quotes Lao Tsu that 'A leader is best when the people hardly know he exists, and of that leader the people will say when his work is done that "We did this ourselves."' (p. 96). Ariyoshi takes this to mean leaders should draw people in and get them involved in a common effort. But I always interpreted it to mean 'leaders' should, to the greatest extent possible, leave the people unmolested in the first place. That way, 'we did this ourselves' becomes literally true, and not an illusion used to camouflage the acts of the 'leaders' themselves.

Apart from these philosophical differences, though, I genuinely enjoyed reading this book. It brought back many memories for me, and more to the point, gave many valuable insights on both the process and the potential of political leadership. Low as my opinion of career politicians tends to be, I have to admit that if more of them were motivated by the kinds of ideals described on these pages, the act of politics might well be a less nasty thing. I even -- dare I say it? -- have a little bit of admiration for the man.

Jack Pollock not Jackson Pollock.......2000-10-19

I accidently came across this book years ago when I was searching for a title by the Abstract Expressionist, American painter Jackson Pollock. What I got instead was an intimate portrayal of a gay Canadian art dealer in the early 1970's. This book is written in diary format and is an important book because it navigates the discovery of Norval Morriseau, an Ojibwa artist that has become one of Canada's most important living painters. Jack Pollock talks about his first meeting with Norval and the their eventual travels accross Canada, which Norval always kept very interesting. Norval Morriseau was having problems with alcohal at the time and was arrested during the writing of this book, a day after Norval's release from prison the National Film Board of Canada began interviewing Norval and Jack for a film called "The Paradox of Norval Morriseau" which makes an interesting companion to "Dear M." Jack Pollock's book is a good read on many levels. It gives insight to the formative years of the Toronto art scene in the 1960's. It gives it's reader uncensored insight into the lifestyle of a gay man living with several addictions and acts as an important historical document to the formative years of Norval Morriseau. I am sure you will enjoy it.
