REVIEWS.......2006-07-12
"The book has three likely uses. First, it can serve as a quick guide for those who can remember any of the author's names for a key article, but need more exact information for location or reference. Second, it can enable those interested in quantitative literature analysis to test and verify much of the work in this area by the authors of this book. Finally, and most likely, the book can help professors identify the seminal works in specific areas of interest. This can be particularly beneficial in designing reading lists for graduate courses.
"The new edition contains three significant additions. First, four additional years are included. Second, the four categories and citation indexes for each article are given in Part I as well as Part II. Third, all indexed articles are listed in the Part II sections, yet readers who scorn the uncited will not be inconvenienced, since unreferenced articles reside at the bottom of each list.
"In summary, this is a significantly improved edition. This unique book shows which works in various areas have most strongly influenced recent academic accounting research. The book should continue to be especially valuable in preparing reading lists for accounting doctoral programs and seminars."
----Accounting Review
"The authors have added citations for research published during the last 3 years to the 22 years of citations contained in the first edition. There is an alphabetical listing of all articles cited, followed by a breakdown according to mode of reasoning, research methodology, school of thought and topical content. Accounting faculty and graduate students will find this to be a useful aid in locating information for their research projects."

Book Description
Managing Across Cultures, an essential guide to cross cultural management, has been fully revised and updated, and includes contributions from many of the most outstanding authors in the field of crosscultural and comparative management, such as Nancy Adler, John Child, Charles Hampden-Turner and Fons Trompenaars, Frank Heller, David Hickson, Geert Hofstede, Fred Luthans, Derek Pugh and Rosalie Tung amongst others. Managing Across Cultures is concerned with crosscultural issues, both generally and also more specifically, in Australia, East Asia, Europe, Latin America and the USA. It examines culture not just in the commonly known sense, i.e. nation-states and regional groupings, but also at a corporate culture level. It looks at how managers, manage across different cultures and how they cope with globalization in practice. This is an indispensable text for both teachers and students of international business and management, as well as international executives; and contains descriptions of the most recent thoughts and insightful ideas on globalization and culture, the `culturefree' versus `culture-specific' management debates, area-studies and management education practice.

Book Description
This monograph provides the most recent and up-to-date developments on fractional differential and fractional integro-differential equations involving many different potentially useful operators of fractional calculus.
The subject of fractional calculus and its applications (that is, calculus of integrals and derivatives of any arbitrary real or complex order) has gained considerable popularity and importance during the past three decades or so, due mainly to its demonstrated applications in numerous seemingly diverse and widespread fields of science and engineering.
Some of the areas of present-day applications of fractional models include Fluid Flow, Solute Transport or Dynamical Processes in Self-Similar and Porous Structures, Diffusive Transport akin to Diffusion, Material Viscoelastic Theory, Electromagnetic Theory, Dynamics of Earthquakes, Control Theory of Dynamical Systems, Optics and Signal Processing, Bio-Sciences, Economics, Geology, Astrophysics, Probability and Statistics, Chemical Physics, and so on.
In the above-mentioned areas, there are phenomena with estrange kinetics which have a microscopic complex behaviour, and their macroscopic dynamics can not be characterized by classical derivative models.
The fractional modelling is an emergent tool which use fractional differential equations including derivatives of fractional order, that is, we can speak about a derivative of order 1/3, or square root of 2, and so on. Some of such fractional models can have solutions which are non-differentiable but continuous functions, such as Weierstrass type functions. Such kinds of properties are, obviously, impossible for the ordinary models.
What are the useful properties of these fractional operators which help in the modelling of so many anomalous processes? From the point of view of the authors and from known experimental results, most of the processes associated with complex systems have non-local dynamics involving long-memory in time, and the fractional integral and fractional derivative operators do have some of those characteristics.
This book is written primarily for the graduate students and researchers in many different disciplines in the mathematical, physical, engineering and so many others sciences, who are interested not only in learning about the various mathematical tools and techniques used in the theory and widespread applications of fractional differential equations, but also in further investigations which emerge naturally from (or which are motivated substantially by) the physical situations modelled mathematically in the book.
This monograph consists of a total of eight chapters and a very extensive bibliography. The main objective of it is to complement the contents of the other books dedicated to the study and the applications of fractional differential equations. The aim of the book is to present, in a systematic manner, results including the existence and uniqueness of solutions for the Cauchy type problems involving nonlinear ordinary fractional differential equations, explicit solutions of linear differential equations and of the corresponding initial-value problems through different methods, closed-form solutions of ordinary and partial differential equations, and a theory of the so-called sequential linear fractional differential equations including a generalization of the classical Frobenius method, and also to include an interesting set of applications of the developed theory.
Key features:
- It is mainly application oriented.
- It contains a complete theory of Fractional Differential Equations.
- It can be used as a postgraduate-level textbook in many different disciplines within science and engineering.
- It contains an up-to-date bibliography.
- It provides problems and directions for further investigations.
- Fractional Modelling is an emergent tool with demonstrated applications in numerous seemingly diverse and widespread fields of science and engineering.
- It contains many examples.
- and so on!
Book Description
On the bicentennial of Hans Christian Andersen’s birth, this collection takes Andersen out of the nursery and places him squarely in the literary pantheon. While Andersen’s tales continue to seize the imagination with their singular blend of simplicity, eccentricity, and charm, English-language readers have until now had to content themselves with inaccurate retellings and inadequate translations. Diana Crone Frank, a Danish novelist and linguist, and Jeffrey Frank, a novelist and editor at the New Yorker, offer a much-needed modern translation.
In this collection are twenty-two tales that best represent Andersen’s literary legacy, including such classics as “The Little Mermaid,” “The Ugly Duckling,” “Thumbelisa,” and “The Emperor’s New Clothes,” as well as largely unfamiliar stories like “By the Outermost Sea.” Illuminating notes clarify references in the tales. And in an introductory essay, the Franks explore the writer and his times, placing the enigmatic and often bizarre figure of Andersen among his literary contemporaries, such as Charles Dickens and Søren Kierkegaard, with whom he crossed paths; and they bring to life Andersen’s fascinating relationship with the United States. Illustrated with the delicate and beautiful drawings that accompanied the original Danish publication, The Stories of Hans Christian Andersen will delight readers of all ages.
Customer Reviews:
Too much information for my kids.......2004-11-30
What a shame! The book IS beautiful. I had hoped to give it as a gift to my 5 year old, but the biographical notes are much too sexually explicit.
Richly rewarding for all.......2003-11-29
The presentation of this book is superb; it is beautifully designed and produced, with charming illustrations that are especially apt, as they were executed by Andersen's contemporaries.
The admirable introduction places Andersen in the context of his time, and for American readers, links him to this country in a fresh way. A perfect length, the introduction provides the kind of information that makes one eager to get to the stories, yet it is not so detailed that, as too often happens with the more long-winded variety, it is skipped. Don't skip it, for it serves as an important guide to the stories, noting Andersen's adult concerns and anxieties imbedded beneath the surface of the tales, which remain wonderful out-loud reading for small fry.
The stories themselves are a revelation--dispelling the prejudices engendered by Danny Kaye and Disney. Stories taken for granted are new and impeccably rendered in this translation. (Even the notes are great--and should be read before the stories, filled as they are with fascinating information. Also, they're conveniently placed at the end of each story, yet the pages are not sullied by superscript numbers.)
This is a perfect gift, but be sure to keep one for yourself.

Product Description
Robert Muller is recognized as one of the great peacemakers of the 20th century. He started out as the modest son of a poor hatmaker and was trained to follow in his father's footsteps. Life was simple in the French village of Sarreguemines in the 1930's, but as the tide turned to war, German teens started marching in formation across the Sarre River from Robert's home. In May 1940, Adolph Hitler invaded France and declared that all residents of Robert's village were now Germans. For the next three years, Robert maneuvered to avoid being drafted into the Nazi army while he studied Goethe, Schiller, and Descartes at the University of Heidelberg and learned to think like a global citizen. He even harnessed the power of his mind to induce appendicitis on the day before he was to be drafted. When all other options ran out, he fled to Vichy, France, on a midnight freight train, changed his name and joined the French Resistance. In this dramatic authorized biography, Robert Muller discovered on the battlefield that he was destined to be a peacemaker. On the night of the liberation of Lyon, Muller stood by a cemetery weeping for the young people whose lives were taken during his service in the Resistance. That night he swore he would devote his life to peace. After World War II, Muller dedicated his life to the United Nations, where he initiated economic and social programs that changed the world.
Customer Reviews:
Prophet: The Hatmaker's Son, by Douglas Gillies.......2003-10-19
In this outstanding book, Prophet, the Hatmaker's Son, author Doug Gillies provides a detailed and insightful portrayal of the earler life and times of Dr. Robert Muller...a legend of our times, who as a youth, experienced first-hand the social turbulance and heart-wrenching injustices of war from both the Allied and German perspectives.
Based on a series of in-depth interviews and insightful conversations with Dr. Muller, author Gillies has painted a series of realistic and emotionally sensitive collages which portray in humanistic detail the shifting cultural landscapes of Europe, as social stability become shattered and virtually every aspect of normal life is dramatically disrupted by the overwhelming impacts of World War II.
Following his youthful adventures as a French Resistance Fighter, Robert Muller launched his long and fruitful career as a Global Peacemaker. The grim realities and emotional turmoil he had experienced in the wartime environment, inspired him to make a soul commitment to himself...that he would dedicate his unique multilingual and intercultural abilities for the rest of his life to the cause of Conflict Resolution, Social Justice, and Global Peace. This book reveals the poignant details of this fascinating career odyssey, which eventually led Dr. Muller to become a key player in the formation and dynamic interplays of the United Nations theater...in his role as UN Assistant Secretary General.
As a result of his overriding quest to redirect the efforts of Mankind away from war and destruction, and into more peaceful and enlightened pursuits, Dr. Muller (regarded as the Father of Global Education) developed a unique "Core Curriculum," which formsd the basis for a number of Robert Muller Schools. He is also Co-Founder and Chancellor Emeritus for the University of Peace in Costa Rics.
In addition to being the recepient of numerous prestegious World Peace Awards, has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize some 22 times!
For those individuals interested in realistic historical dramas, and the making of a legendary global leader, this book should have a broad audience appeal, and will most certainly enrich the literary experience of anyone who reads it.
PROPHET.......2003-06-17
At first I hesitated in reading this book. Even after the first couple of chapters I wondered if I should continue. Politics is something I don't like to deal with, and reading about them is even harder. But something about PROPHET kept me wanting to know more. So I continued to read it to its completion, and I am so glad I did. I've heard the name "Robert Muller" but never knew anything about him. This book takes you through his life, and what made him who he was and how he formed his beliefs in this thing called "peace", and why he accepted the United Nations invite. To know that his beliefs were founded on events that he experienced, encountered, and/or observed makes his life more compelling to know. Douglas Gillies does an outstanding job relating not only Robert Mullers life, but the historical, spiritual, and self-knowledge significance that surrounds him. War and peace, two issues that Muller dealt with all his life, fighting against one, and for the other, are issues that all of us face and have to decide what we, ourselves, stand for. For Muller, peace was the overwhelming decision and one that very few can truly understand.
Co-creators for a better world........2003-01-12
"Prophet is a genuine literary gem. The true mark of an excellent performance is when one hears the music, rather than the notes. Prophet meets that test and goes considerbly beyond. Douglas Gillies is an extraordinary writer. He involves us in Robert Muller's story immediately and continues doing so in subtle ways that hold us as active participants throughout. Prophet is universal in spirit and nature, encompassing all of us as human beings. Its tone and style are exquisite, and its intergenerational flow carries us all along on its living stream."
-Margery Layton, educator.
I can't wait for the film.......2002-11-29
This is the story of an optimist who worked at the United Nations from its founding. Muller grew up on the German border, in occupied France and joined the Resistance. You will hear his story of World War II and the founding and growth of the UN.
Douglas Gillies is a gifted writer. He brings this story to life and makes this book a page-turner. He writes the story as through he was there himself.
Robert Muller has touched a lot of people. You can tell by the number of endorsement that have been gathered for this book.
I love history and I love this book. The story would make a great movie.

Heart warming!.......2002-04-26
I purchased this book a couple of years ago. I was taken with it right away. It brings back wonderful old memories of Christmas long gone. It is beautifully illustrated!! The illustrations attracted me to the book, the words won my heart!
A Lovely Read.......2002-04-25
It was a simpler time and these succulent memories bring back my own. Better yet, my special little ones are privy to what it was like to be a child in the "olden days". A beautiful thing to read together. Loved it.
Great Christmas gift!.......2002-04-16
I loved this story of a time in rural Texas before life was so rushed and hectic. This is a beautifully written and illustrated story and a wonderful Christmas gift. I originally was interested because of the author, Elithe Hamilton Kirkland. And this book gives a new look at her altogether. I gather it is a true story written by Kirkland for friends and family and then this publisher picked it up to share it with a larger audience. My husband and I have given many copies of this book to friends who have loved it. They all identify with the relationship between the girl and her family and the wonderful old-fashioned Christmas. What a great Christmas gift for such a reasonable price!
Not the original publication of this work by Kirkland.......1999-10-12
The original work was published in 1985 by the author and Nancie Austin (illustrator). Kirkland passed away in 1992 and this edition was NOT authorized by Kirkland as it was published after her death. In my opinion Elithe H. Kirkland would NOT have approved of this edition. The first edition is now a collectors item and very limited in number.

This is the author's account of her struggle for life against stage IV metastatic breast cancer, which usually translates to a death sentence. The struggle, described with down-to-earth honesty and directness, is both horrifying and inspiring. Particularly grueling was the bone marrow transplant she went through in a last-ditch effort to save her life. Almost dead from huge doses of chemotherapy that destroyed her immune system along with the cancer cells, she had to stay in isolation for 25 days while her harvested bone marrow cells brought her back from the brink. Middlebrook survived a remarkable test of endurance.
Customer Reviews:
Too much drama.......2006-10-25
Cancer is a devastating, life-altering disease. However, this book is a little too dramatic and "victim-y" for me. I only got through a few chapters, up until the part where the author's 16 year old daughter fails her driver's test, and the author writes that she knows her daughter purposely failed the test so that she wouldn't have to drive her mother to doctor's appts and to run errands, thereby salvaging the one last thing her mother can still do for her while suffering from cancer. BS, she failed because she didn't know how to drive.
Please don't mistake me for being callous against someone with a life-threatening illness. I have lost family members to cancer and have a good chance to developing breast cancer in my lifetime. I just hope if I ever do, I can keep my sense of realism and fight with everything I have in me, instead of drowning in self-pity and "why-me's".
Seeing the Crab: A Memoir of Dying.......2003-01-29
This is a wonderful and inspirational book. It follows the story of a woman with cancer. Its a very deep story. The author makes you ask yourself if you can end with cancer. Christina is a very strong and admirable woman. As soon as you read it you will not want to put it down.
A guide to being real with beloveds who have cancer........1996-07-07
By describing her experience with illness so candidly,
Middlebrook offers a profound mirror for those of us who have
beloveds with cancer. I was able to see how my dread of this
disease, and of my best friend suffering and dying from it,
was keeping me from being authentic with her. I recommend
this book for anyone who has a loved one on the cancer
journey, when you are ready to get real.
An eloquent and chilling account of a battle with cancer........1996-05-23
Ms. Middlebrook is told in 1991 that she has Stage IV (terminal) breast cancer. Her memoir spares nothing. She is relentless and graphical in her descriptions of the disease and, most especially, its treatment. The account is powerful and very personal. Not just in the detailing of her experience with the disease and the dramatic and extreme treatments, but also in her sharing of her feelings about her interactions with friends, family members and strangers. Ms Middlebrook's prose is vivid and, I found, often moving. The reader gains a new appreciation for what it is like to come to grips with ones mortality. Despite the seeming grimness of the subject matter, the message is somehow uplifting while being totally honest about the ultimate outcome for the author
