      Book Description

In this radical book on business and work, Swedish businessman Rolf Osterberg argues that businesses have their priorities all wrong. Paradoxically, corporations also -- more than any other institution -- have the potential to act as an agent of change toward a human-oriented world. The solution lies in the ongoing fundamental shift in our way of thinking -- of our perception of the world, life, the human being, and meaning. This is Osterberg's "new thought." In "Corporate Renaissance," Osterberg explores: How the creativity of its employees -- not capital -- is a company's greatest asset Why employee-owned companies are the model for the future Why hierarchies prevent problem-solving How profit-taking can doom a company Why setting goals, without an underlying vision, is destructive

      Book Description

As concerned citizens recognize that the vibrancy of urban centers goes hand-in-hand with the vitality of the surrounding rural areas, a farmers' market renaissance is beginning throughout the country. Helping to increase local market success for both farmers and customers, this book serves as a three-part guide to marketing, being a resource for farmers or market gardeners selling their produce at farmers’ markets; for city planners or market managers in starting and building a market; and for community activists and city planners trying to foster appreciation for farmland while reinvigorating economic and social vitality in urban areas. Appendices cover insurance, customer surveys, farmers’ market profitability, and benefits of farmers’ markets.

I bought this the other day and I am so glad that I did. We are moving to NC and going to start a hobby farm and sell at local produce markets. This is a great book. A true wealth of information and to think I almost didn't buy it. Can't go wrong with this book.

5 out of 5 stars Worth Every Dollar.......2007-01-10

I have never before read a book with so much detailed information that still manages to give a great over view of it's subject. If you are into marketing your own produce, at your own stand or in a farmer's market, you are going to want to have this book. If you want to start a Farmer's market, this book is beyond value, it is a bible.

5 out of 5 stars The best of all the market books I've read!.......2002-09-11

The cover is kind of "blah" but there's lots and lots of really god solid information inside. In fact, so far every question I've had has been addressed. A lot of the other books seem big on theory ("You must be organized!") but this book has the nuts and bolts. In fact, it's the only one that sits on my desk. The others are nicely preserved on my bookshelf.

5 out of 5 stars What to do when you participate or start a farmers' market?.......2001-11-10

The answer is read this book! You don't have to be a student of marketing or have a masters degree to become an excellent marketer of your farm products. "The New Farmers' Market" is a great way to get your ideas rolling for you as a farmers' market manager or even a vendor. Information is presented in a clear, almost common sense way. As a marketing specialist for a government agency, this is a great asset to my library of resources for my clients.

          Book Description

This revised edition of a mathematical classic originally published in 1957 will bring to a new generation of students the enjoyment of investigating that simplest of mathematical figures, the circle. The author has supplemented this new edition with a special chapter designed to introduce readers to the vocabulary of circle concepts with which the readers of two generations ago were familiar. Readers of Circles need only be armed with paper, pencil, compass, and straight edge to find great pleasure in following the constructions and theorems. Those who think that geometry using Euclidean tools died out with the ancient Greeks will be pleasantly surprised to learn many interesting results which were only discovered in modern times. Novices and experts alike will find much to enlighten them in chapters dealing with the representation of a circle by a point in three-space, a model for non-Euclidean geometry, and the isoperimetric property of the circle.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars As is their nature, circles make a comeback.......2000-02-23

Although it is the simplest of all nonlinear geometric forms, the circle is far from trivial. It is indeed a pleasure that The Mathematical Association of America chose to reprint an update of this classic first printed in 1957. Geometry teaching has been in retreat for many years in the US and that has been a sad (and very bad) thing. It is also puzzling as so many people say that the reason why they cannot do mathematics (i.e. algebra) is that they need to see something in order to understand it. Furthermore, the first mathematical education that most children receive contains the differentiation of shapes and their different properties.
Circles and lines as used in geometry are abstractions that are easily grasped, much simpler to many than the abstract generalizations of algebra. One can only hope that this book signals a rebirth in interest in geometry education. Without question, it can be used as a text for that education and would help parent a rebirth. To remedy this modern affliction and make the material available to the current readership, a chapter zero was included. This new chapter is used to introduce the background concepts and terminology that could be assumed when is was first published.
No one can truly appreciate the intellectual achievements of the ancients as summarized by Euclid without doing some of the problems. There is also a stark beauty to a form of mathematics where the tools are a compass, straightedge and a mind. Particularly in the age of calculators and computers. All of the basic, ancient results concerning circles are covered as well as some very recent ones. The theorems are well presented and compete without being overdone. In keeping with the ancient traditions, pencil, paper, compass and straightedge are the only tools used. A short collection of solved exercises is also included.
Like the books of Euclid, this work will grow old but never dated. It was destined to be a classic when is was first printed and remains so today.

          Book Description

As the father of the nuclear powered Navy, Adm. Hyman G. Rickover was a pivotal figure in twentieth-century American history. While many books have been written about various aspects of his career, this is the first biography to have access to private papers, family and close friends. It not only deals with the admiral's controversial naval career but with phases of his personal life that made him what he was, including his youth as a Jewish immigrant who embraced America and the opportunities it offered. The author, Francis Duncan, worked with Rickover from 1969, when he was assigned to write a history of the nuclear propulsion program, until the admiral's death in 1986. Shortly before he died, Rickover turned over his files to Duncan, including letters to his first wife that give a vivid picture of the Navy from 1929 to 1945. Rickover's second wife allowed Duncan access to letters covering important events later in his career.

The author was also granted interviews with the admiral's son and sister and with individuals from the Naval Reactors, an organization headed by Rickover whose members mostly had refused to talk to other biographers. A witness to the admiral's daily activities and the programs he directed, Duncan also drew on his own considerable knowledge to present a portrait of the man that gives new insights into Rickover's genius and short-comings. The book does not go into technical detail but focuses on the admiral's fights to build and extend the nuclear fleet and the often-difficult relationships that developed in the pursuit of the goal. He shows that Rickover's efforts had a profound effect on the postwar world, that the excellence and responsibility he demanded are qualities that reach beyond the Navy, and that his influence continues to be felt today.

          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Why is this guy not on the biography channel?.......2003-01-17

I was quite surprised after reading this book. It is an excellent history of Rickover and US Navy Nuclear propulsion. I had always wondered why nuclear power was always so safe for the Navy but the public utilities had so much trouble with it. This is an interesting history of moving up the ranks in the Navy and how you can advance. I was surprised at all the people who seemed to hate Rickover because he wanted to have his way and never to go below his specifications. This is why Rickover was never on the biography channel was because he was contriversial. The story really makes you want to know more and more about Nuclear submarines especially the times at Oak Ridge and when they were building the Nautilus. It's hard to think of a time when all the subs before that ran on the surface most of the time. I was glad that Rickover just took over and got the job done. The only part I did not like was that they were not specific enough about the design of the subs. I do not mean engineering drawings or national secrets but at least some general layouts of the submarines and the propulsion system in a layman's terms to have a better understanding of this. Richard Rhodes did a good job of this in his book "The Making of the Atomic Bomb" explaining the first nuclear reactor that went critical in Chicago. I would like to also know more about that light water breeder reactor that ran on thorium instead of uranium at Shippingport. Why haven't we made more of those instead of depending on fossil fuels? Rickover was in on the most exciting technology of the 20th century, how exciting must that have been.

5 out of 5 stars An Overdue Account of Rickover, the Man........2002-01-31

Many biographies have been written over the past 40 years about the impact that the life of Admiral H.G. Rickover has had on the United States Navy ý one in which redefined the role of the Navy in the post World II era. All of these works have focused on his many accomplishments and the controversies that surrounded him, which often conflicted with the executive branch of the Federal government, naval shipbuilders, and the U.S. Navy itself. Few, if any, clearly demonstrate who Rickover was, and how his principles evolved. No doubt, the author of ýRickover: The Struggle for Excellence,ý Francis Duncan, is the only biographer afforded enough access to the Rickover as an outsider to the Navy and its Naval Reactors program, to know him well enough to accomplish a detailed account of what shaped the man. This book, the third in a series by Duncan, tells the stories from birth till his death, remarking on events that shaped his priorities and principles, and addresses many of the unanswered questions or mysteries that readers of other biographers may have found in the story of Rickoverýs career. Some of the misconceptions about Rickover that Duncanýs work clears up are concerns such that Rickover had lied about his age or that Rickover had been for the most part unsuccessful and out of place in the Navy prior to his work with Naval Reactors. Unlike the Polmar and Allen ýRickoverý biography, which often appears lengthy and intimidating as an all encompassing view of Rickoverýs life, Duncanýs work is very readable and pleasant. I assume that Duncan knew that the larger than life Rickover story could never be captured in single volume, and separated his works, which describes his evolution; ýNuclear Navy, 1946-1962ý which deals with the influence of Atomic Energy on the modern U.S. Navy,ý and the ýRickover and the Nuclear Navy: The Discipline of Technology,ý describing the founding and management of Rickoverýs technical program.

Although the emphasis of most Rickover biographies has been his impact on the Navy, his story serves two other main purposes. First, from a management and organizational behavior perspective Rickover seems to break all the rules and still maintain a highly committed program that integrated safety, reliability and high-performance He embedded principles and expectations that continue to exist today, and are the core of the Naval Nuclear program. This is the ultimate measure of a founderýs success, for an organization to remain relatively static around what principles and values drive its core mission. The second of course, is Rickoverýs influence on the operation of civilian nuclear power plants, an accomplishment that Rickover thought he was unlikely to achieve when he was forced to withdraw from Shippingport. However, his influence and principles have filtered down through the personnel he trained through ýNR,ý and have subsequently redefined nuclear power operations in the Post-TMI era of nuclear power, and forced a paradigm shift in nuclear power operations and realigned the thinking about the discipline required to operate high-risk technologies.

My only criticism of Duncan is perhaps his fondness of Rickover, which comes through in his writing. Considering all of the negative stories of Rickover, I would expect more negatives in his depiction of Rickover as well. However, biographies are written about the life and accomplishments of great men, and gossip and scandals best left for supermarket tabloids.

            Book Description

This book examines both the constitutional jurisprudence of Supreme Court justice Louis D. Brandeis and one of his most famous and controversial opinions, Erie Railroad Co. v. Tompkins (1938). This landmark decision led to a significant relocation of power from federal to state courts, and, says the author, it provides a window on the legal, political, and ideological battles over the federal courts in the New Deal era and after.

              Book Description

Pierre Elliott Trudeau always opposed the dominant ideology and what passed for conventional wisdom. This was true when he spoke out against the oppressive rule of Maurice Duplessis in Quebec. It was true in his years in Ottawa, as justice minister and prime minister, when he introduced controversial measures ranging from wage-and-price controls and restrictions on foreign investments, to expanded rights for homosexuals. It remained true in the years after his retirement, particularly when he has took issue with the more provocative expressions of Quebec nationalism and with federal initiatives such as Meech Lake and the Charlottetown Accord.

Now neo-conservative ideas have taken over. Virtually every level of government in Canada is competing with the others to reduce the role of the state and eliminate constraints on business. Less government has come to mean a smaller role especially for the federal government. And the increased powers taken on by the provinces are being used, increasingly, to substitute private interests for the public good. The Canada that promoted equality, justice, and opportunity for all is under sustained attack. Never has the need for a clear statement of liberal principles been greater.

In this volume, Ron Graham brought together a selection of excerpts from Trudeau’s writings, speeches, and interviews – many of them never before published in book form – to make a highly readable, lucid, and compelling summary of Trudeau’s political beliefs. To each chapter in this selection Trudeau provided an introduction and to many of the excerpts he added a new commentary. The result is a book of remarkable power: rational, timely, and eloquent.

5 out of 5 stars Trudeau Is Your Guide!!.......2003-10-30

I was one of those people who never voted and never had an opinion on anything political. But after reading PET's views and thoughts about Canada and her people, I can say I am a Liberal. This book helped me come to a more complete vision on what a Canadian should strive to be. I was looking for a guide to help me understand Canada, and without Trudeau I would still be in the dark. In a world where there is no left or right and everyone just flip flops around the middle, this book stands up for what being a Liberal is about. The book doesn’t dictate, it just cuts out the BS and leaves you with something to think about. You will get slapped in the face with the honest and straight to the point style of the book.

5 out of 5 stars Quick Trudeau reference.......2001-07-13

Trudeauites search no more! In this small book, you'll find all of Trudeaus quotes and thoughts, culled from thousands of pages of materials. They are grouped by relevant section (Quebec sovereignty, etc) and the quotes used make great conversation starters. Love Trudeau or hate him, this book gives both sides plenty of ammo.

              5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......1999-02-21

"The Essential Trudeau" is a well crafted novel that manages to amalgamate all of Trudeau's views on politics into one pocketbook sized novel. What made it very interesting was its ability to seize the reader with it simplicity. Unlike most other political books, this one manages to use language that can be understood by the youngest of Trudeauites. Pierre Trudeau himself contributes to the novel by adding new information on his views and justification for past political decisions while he was in office. This is a very brave book that looks at the views of a man considered to be Canada's most influential Prime Minister. An entire range of topics are covered in this book, including "The state of Quebec nationalism" and "The Role of the state". I highly recomend this novel, as it presents the views of a man who will go down in history as a true liberal.

Boats, Barnacles and Crabgrass is a story about the livelihood of a tugboat man on Puget Sound in the middle of the 20th century. The salty environment creates a life that begins with a smile, some blisters and the genius needed for survival. Working with a crew on his tug boat, caring for his family, maintaining the boat, and the business of moving timber from forest to mill on the waters of Puget Sound require keen observation of a continually changing environment, as well as a love for the work and a willingness to do hard work.

                    Book Description

During the course of the twentieth century, nineteen men and one woman--from the Third Marquis of Salisbury to Tony Blair--have occupied the post of Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. In a series of biographical essays, Dick Leonard, a leading political journalist and former MP, recounts the circumstances that took them to the top of "the greasy pole", probes their personal and political strengths and weaknesses, assesses their performance in the top office and asks what lasting influence they have had.

4 out of 5 stars As engaging as any novel could be, but actually a memoir!.......2006-04-27

Being the rabid Picano fan that I am, it's not always easy to consider myself unbiased. However, since I thoroughly disliked his Like People in History, I feel I can be more objective now.

That said, A House on the Ocean, a House on the Bay: A Memoir is amazing. It is a thoroughly engaging book that takes us on an interesting journey of one man's life that is terribly full and robust. However, like many a Southern author (which Mr. Picano is NOT), Picano manages to make this book feel like a leisurely wander, allowing us to discover the nuances he wants us to realize at his pace and not at the pace of our reading.

It's a trick not easily done.

This is a fine book about Picano's time spent on Fire Island and the people he knew and loved during that time.

                    I highly recommend this book.

                    5 out of 5 stars Picano's Finest Hour.......2001-04-25

Although I have read most all of Felice Picano's books, I find myself returning to A HOUSE ON THE OCEAN, A HOUSE ON THE BAY most frequently - sometimes just for recalling his atmospheric descriptions of places with and without people, sometimes just to re-visit Fire Island - a place I've never been but that has become for me a solid symbol of East Coast escape. Picano's memoirs at times are overwhelming: how could one man have experienced life so richly and tranposed it to words for us, the voyeur readers? Perhaps the places and people he so succinctly describes are bathed in poetic license, but that only makes the moments in between interpersonal encounters pregnant pauses. Picano has managed to keep us entertained book after book and I eagerly await the release of ONYX.

5 out of 5 stars So far this volume remains my favorite.......2001-04-23

Checking as to when the next novel by Felice Picano is due out, I realized that though I have read all his books I have never written about them in this forum. Strange, but understandable when I look back over all the experiences of reading his work. Picano writes in the manner of long nighttime walks with a close friend: he shares quips and bedazzling escapades and memories of lost friends like few others. His stories are at once funny, tender, bitchy (in a way that few can imitate), and just plain good stories. In A HOUSE ON THE OCEAN, A HOUSE ON THE BAY he seems to have paused in the midst of memories very special to him...or at least his characters are so acutely drawn that they seem like pages from a diary. If you've ever wondered what Fire Island was like at its peak, here it is. Wonderful tales populated by people you'd like to know....or at least have observed! Felice Picano keeps treating us to fine writing and I eagerly await ONYX!

5 out of 5 stars Oh my, this is my favorite book of all time.......2001-03-17

I am Felice Picano, or certainly am living his life. Well, sort of. When I read straight through this book--a library copy, I am going to buy it now--I said to myself and to my friends that I loved the book so much because of how much I see of him in me, including that he was also born on February 22nd, that we are both gay, and that I am struggling, as he was, to write. If any book can give me inspiration to live my dream, it is "A House on the Ocean, A House on the Bay." Bravo to Picano for writing a book that was written for me.

5 out of 5 stars The best of Picano's memoirs to date. Absolutely compelling........1998-09-25

Frankly, when I got to the final 100 pages, on Gay Pride Night, no less, I was so compelled to finish the book that I stayed up all night to finish it and then pack for a business trip to London.

Picking up his life in the mid-1970s, Picano gives an account of post-liberation, book store jobs, love affairs, friendships, and the wisdom of time and difference.

Once again, it is split in parts. The first details a tortured menage a trois in which Felice is the one wanted "for his mind." He works as a book store manager and plans a career as a writer.

In the second part, he discusses the Fire Island scene, the "Gay 2000" who influenced gay culture and the broader culture at large, and his job at a fancier bookstore--unnamed by recognizable as Rizzoli.

Picano, more here than elsewhere, comes into contact with more recognizable celebrities--wide-ranging from Rose Kennedy to Bette Midler (in her bathhouse singer days).

Picano also reflects on his position as a survivor--the remaining 2% left after the AIDS crisis devestates the Gay 2000, and his role now as a witness.

Also apparent is Picano's fine education, cultural appreciation, love of writing, determined confidence, and perceptive mind. This is the book that sent me into a summer of reading whatever Picano books I could find. It's hard to imagine anyone--gay or straight--not getting something out of this memoir. Truly a voice of his generation, and for future ones as well

Yeah, I liked the book. :-))
