Book Description
Accounting Principles, Seventh Edition addresses the issues that our customers-- instructors and students-- have said are important. These include student success, student motivation, student problem-solving skills, student decision-making skills, and technology to assist learning and technology to assist teaching. Click on www.wiley.com/college/wkk for details on how we address each of these issues.
Book Description
This text helps students hit the road with a practical set of tools, and the confidence they need to use those tools effectively in making business decisions. The goal is to introduce a new Principles of Accounting text that better reflects a more conceptual and decision-making approach to the material.
The authors have taken a new "macro- to micro-" approach to the Principles of Accounting course by starting with a discussion of real financial statements first, rather than starting with the Accounting Cycle (although the Accounting Cycle is thoroughly covered in Chapters 3 and 4). The objective is to establish how a financial statement communicates the financing, investing, and operating activities of a business to users of accounting information. They motivate students by grounding the discussion in the real world, showing them the relevance of the topics covered to their future career.

Book Description
Written for business and human resource professionals, the guide to regulating overtime covers all of the latest changes to the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), which determines whether an employee does or does not receive overtime pay. The 2004 revision of the law marked the first update of overtime regulations to the FLSA in more than 50 years and includes changes to minimum wage, overtime requirements, and white-collar exemption regulations, all of which are addressed in this book. In addition to federal regulations, overtime exemption standards in 18 states that differ from federal regulations are outlined in detail.
In 2004, the Department of Labor issued new overtime regulations of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Understanding the Federal Wage & Hour Laws is an up-to-date, authoritative reference that explains the current regulations. Not only does the book cover the continuing and new regulations, it helps you meet the challenge of multi-tiered compliance required by different state and federal regulations.
Written for HR professionals, this book succinctly but thoroughly covers all aspects of the FLSA, including:
- Who is covered?
- Hours worked
- Overtime requirements
- Minimum wage
- Child labor laws
- Recordkeeping requirements
- Wage-hour audit
- Questions about the wage-hour investigation
- Consequences of FLSA violations

Half confused, half amazed.......2007-09-20
For as simple as Hawking was supposed to present the complicated theoretical physics concepts, at times I still found myself as confused as Adam on Mother's Day. Dr. Hawking's work is caught between a rock and a hard place in "A Brief History of Time" and the subsequent "The Universe in a Nutshell"; he provides neither the technical language to satisfy the experienced readers, nor the sufficiently simplified rhetoric to appeal to the uninitiated. Not to worry as the theories and supporting arguments in both books can still satisfy the curiosity of the inexperienced, and his celebrity status in the world of physics keeps the experienced audience engaged.
There is one update to this book not mentioned, and that is, Hawking eventually admits that he was wrong about his theory of loss of information in black holes. This idea of his had put him at odds with many theoretical physicists. Instead, he puts forth the unproven theory that information in a black hole is transferred to a parallel universe. Unfortunately, time may not permit Hawking to complete his work on the proof or supporting evidence of this important theory. His terminal illness appears to be finally catching up to him. I wish him well and thank him for his important contributions to the science of understanding the universe.
Despite its shortcomings, A Brief History of Time succeeds in shedding light on the mysteries of the creation of the universe at the point of singularity, what happened subsequently, and what may or may not transpire in the future. Hawking discusses in length Einstein's general theory of relativity, quantum mechanics and the attempt to combine these into a grand unified theory, a lofty goal that has eluded theoretical physicists to date.
Fascinating.......2007-09-17
Quite accessible for a book on the beginning of the universe. It doesn't explain how it got here, but begins at 1 second post big bang. It has a good explanation of the work of Isaac Newton and why it was important and also the work of Einstein. I understood the physics, at least I did when I was reading it. The explanations were good enough to let me wrap my mind around them. It is interesting that the idea of ether is coming back up for consideration again. Not sure I believe in string theory though. Why not just say everything is made of energy?
Hawking :a master writer.......2007-09-02
Hawking's new book "The Briefest History of Time" should be read by all intelligent Americans. Every book of this quality and with a similar contents may help to stop the tide of idiocy proposed by supporters of creationism in America.Only by spreading real science we will escape becoming the richest but also the most primitive intellectually nation in the world. We need a heavy counterweight to the evangelic snake oil peddlers who can gather tousands sing along automata and preach bible which offenses every educated and intelligent mind. Hawking's book can help to be such a counterbalance.
Great Renewed Introduction on our Time.......2007-08-21
This book explains the physical concepts in very understandable fashion. It can be understood by any person. You do not have to be a scientist or physicists to read the book. There are also wonderful examples explaining the scientific phenomenon underlying our universe and black hole or other galaxies.
customer.......2007-06-27
Book arrived in timely fashion, excellent condition, well packaged to protect it during shipment. I'd read it in the library and thought it excellent. I'm a logical person but not a physicist or a mathematician yet the material was understandable, well presented and the illustrations very helpful. The absence of long proofs/equations not only shortened the book but made the descriptions and illustrations easier to follow and not so intimidating. The large print version was especially helpful even though my eye sight is good. I'll read it a number of times and I'm sure my understanding will increase with each reading.

Book Description
This book has been written at a time when environmental issues and the move towards "clean technology" is driving synthetic chemists away from organic based solvent systems and towards water as the preferred medium of the future. The paints industry has already moved to aqueous based products. Metal aqua complexes are widely used in the areas of catalysis, dyes and pigments and in hydrometallurgy where a complete understanding of the metal ions in aqueous media is highly desirable.
Book Description
This is a hands-on introduction to modeling a wide variety of applications in Microsoft Excel. It features numerous tutorials and applications to illustrate how to model and solve problems in Excel. Neuwirth and Arganbright offer a more accessible and hands-on alternative than do other modeling books. Illustrated examples provide instruction in concepts, applications, and methods of solving them.
Customer Reviews:
An ideal text for those modeling with Excell.......2004-02-03
This text is a softcover, even though at this time Amazon still lists it as a thin hardcover. It is written on the same level as Giordano, Wier and Fox's Mathematical Modelling, but focuses directly on the use of Microsoft's Excell. I am one of the many annoyed with Microsoft, but since Excell is ubiquitious, it makes a reasonable choice for a course. The book is very visual showing, for example, how to use Excell to draw Feigenbaum diagrams to illustrate chaos, how to illustrating Newton's method (drawing the tangent lines...), drawing Bezier curves for smoothing... It points out many of Excell's useful features (some have found just learning how to add scrollbars useful).
Book Description
Since 1945 the modern revolution in sculpture has gathered pace, and even the term sculpture has ceased to be the fixed category it once was. In Sculpture Since 1945, Andrew Causey provides a ground-breaking account of the development of post-War sculpture.
In over 130 beautiful illustrations, Causey examines innovative and avant-garde works in relation to contemporary events, festivals, commissions, the marketplace, and the changing functions of museums. He also explores the use of everyday objects and the importance of sculptural context,
discussing figurative and non-figurative works, Anti-form, Minimalism, experimental form, Earth art, landscape sculpture, installation, and performance art. A final chapter brings the discussion of sculpture right up to the present day by examining sculpture since 1980. The holistic picture of
post-War sculpture which emerges in Sculpture Since 1945 establishes for the first time key events and themes around which future debate will center.

Quick and efficient.......2007-08-13
As an overview of a large amount of sculpture, this book is great. I think it would take multiple readings to get a full understanding since everything is discussed briefly. It's a perfect size to carry around instead of most art books that are about the size of textbooks.
Clear and Condense.......2007-02-11
This book is a effective and clear review of sculpture from 1945 up to the present. I enjoyed the color plates, the clear descriptions and use it often for resource.
great art history book.......2001-03-30
I checked out this book from the public library and read it twice before I started learning sculpture. Now I finally bought it and I'm still reading it. It's a wonderful book a have to get inspired from the masterpieces. Know the trends and thoughts in the sculpture field. Helps you create artworks from a border point of view, also improve the criticism knowledge.

Book Description
Against the tumultuous backdrop of early Texas history, Williams sketches a vivid portrait of a truly American legend. Map.
Customer Reviews:
SUPERBLY written, researched.......2001-02-01
I'm not sure if the first reviewer read the same book that I did. As a doctoral student in history, I have read many history books and must defend Williams's book as SUPERBLY written and carefully researched; Williams obviously wrote this book for a larger audience. Such an excellent combination of readability and academic rigor is the envy of every serious historian.
I highly recommend this biography for the causal reader and the serious scholar, which certainly ranks among the best bios of Sam Houston to date.
Expertly written and researched.......2001-02-01
I'm not sure if the first reviewer read the same book that I did. As a doctoral student in history, I have read many history books and must say this was a SUPERBLY written and researched account. Williams's prose is highly accessible to the average reader, while meeting the rigors of serious academic work. An excellent book for the casual reader and scholar alike.
Poorly Written.......2000-09-17
This book is so poorly written I stopped reading it after the first 80 pages or so. Some background information provided at the beginning is interesting, but the book failed to hold my interest--a remarkable feat, given how fascinating a man Sam Houston is. A much better biography is Sword of San Jacinto, by Marshall de Bruhl.
An Almost Forgotten, Yet Fascinating, Texan Populist.......2000-09-04
Who is the Houston, the city, and Houston, the popular street in Manhattan named after, anyway?
This fascinating and highly readerable biography retells the legend of Sam Houston, the controversial governor of Tennessee and Texas, the first president of the Republic of Texas, and a protege of Andrew Jackson. Williams' recreates the political and historical atmosphere of Manifest Destiny era in a critical, yet sympathetic biography that should become a standard work for 19th century history buffs. Williams portrays Houston as a charmistic man and alcoholic, a distrustful populist, and an authentic American hero who tried to keep Texas in the Union.
Williams' Houston is also an easy target for revisionist historians looking for expansionist villains. An occassional supporter of the Know Nothing party, Houston defended slavery and advocated a war with Mexico to unite all Americans in 1860. It was a futile effort to both prevent the Civil War and become president of the United States. Williams suggests that Houston's temper and penchant for secrecy blocked his highest political ambitions.
Williamns' vibrant biography illuminates the enduring appeal (and danger) of an authentic military hero and populist politician. Full of memorable quotes and extensive resource notes, this compelling biography is the kind of first rate history that tantalizes readers with absorbing "what ifs" and the lost possibilities of a distant time and place.
I learned a great deal reading this book and highly recommend it. Books like this demonstrate how many great stories remain untold or forgotten in our history - even when cities and streets are named after yesterday's idols.

much more than mere Ramblings from a Transgendered Mind.......2002-10-22
Like the blind seer Tiresius, a neglected archetype from Greek mythology, author Matt Kailey presents much more than mere Ramblings from a Transgendered Mind. Herein are issues of self-actualization, dignity, basic human rights, and "common" courtesy. This is much more than the concerns of the gay/lesbian/bi/trans community. The audience for this book, _Tranifesto_, can be anyone who has ever been affected by societal sex roles or gender roles; I think that should just about include all of the English-speaking souls on this planet.
Kailey (c.f., http://www.mattkailey.com/) writes with some sly and subtle humor. How often have any of us mused, "If only I knew then what I know now"? Especially poignant, then, is his narrative about the first rush of testosterone after accumulating decades of life experience, wisdom, and baggage, impossible for a teen-ager. This quick-read anthology is filled with life-affirming anecdotes and includes discussion of successful on-the-job gender transition as well as answers to Frequently Asked Questions. At the end, in case he "didn't answer your question" or you "want more information," he gives contact information for follow-up. It is difficult to praise this book enough. Give it a read; you'll be delighted. Perhaps it is no coincidence that this book comes to the market at the same time as Jeffrey Eugenides's novel _Middlesex_.
