Invaluable!.......2006-08-15
There have been more than 110 goal setting experiments conducted in laboratories and organizational settings in the twelve years prior to publishing the book ('84). Locke reports that 90% obtained positive results for goal setting. There is no evidence that there are tasks on which goal setting fails to work, providing that employees have control over what they do. People assigned difficult goals performed better (unless the employee is lacking in self-confidence, or partial success is either impossible or meaningless) than did those assigned moderately difficult or easy goal; furthermore, those given specific, challenging goals outperformed those who were given vague goals such as "do your best."
The authors then go on to provide detail on how to succeed in goal setting. Obtaining goal commitment is fundamental. Explaining goals and the reasons behind them are often sufficient to gain employee commitment - subordinates must perceive a goal as fair and reasonable, and trust management. If they perceive a goal as exploitative (eg. piece rates would be cut, layoffs), they are likely to reject it. Action and contingency plans can help build confidence and long-term motivation - they can also serve to validate the reasonability of the goals and uncover hidden snags or barriers. Finally, timely performance feedback vs. goals is also essential.
An excellent resource for both managers and educators.
Clearly shows goals and accomplishment are primary.......1999-05-07
This is an outstanding work. Locke and Latham write so well and the idea that they have is very clearly and expertly communicated. There is no doubt that they are correct in their assessment of goal setting as the primary aspect of individual and organizational accomplishment. When you read about YOUR organization and YOURSELF in these pages you know that they know. They most assuredly lead you to understand that "doing your best" has never been a very clear motivational tool or method to achievement. This is a very substantial work that clearly shows that teleological behavior is the fundamental behavior of the human being and that it is the root of our achievements.
Don't let the publication date fool you. This book will be pertinent and relative to all that we do until we no longer get out of bed in the morning.
Goal Setting Theory.......1998-06-25
Set around the notion that both explicit and implicit goals motivate. It is asserted that goals focus effort, provide task focus and encourage resilience improving overall performance.
Three conditions are highlighted:
1. Feedback 2. Specific goals 3. Difficult goals
One of the most interesting critiques concerns time horizons and motivational techniques to get you through the boring task to something more pleasant.
Book Description
“The reader will note,” Dr. Ober explains, “that psychopathology occupies a prominent place in these essays—melancholia, masochism, hysteria, autoerotic asphyxia, and other dinner table topics.” The book opens with a brisk discussion of flagellation—studded with rare illustrations. Like all of the essays in the book, this is an illuminating chapter, scholarly and good natured at the same time, and one that gives rise to speculation concerning human nature and human history.
Ober provides medical answers to many mysteries. In a discussion of infertility in the Bible, he speculates medically as to why Onan and his older brother Er died during coitus. In the eyes of the doctor, these biblical antiheros may deserve our pity, but not our scorn. He also explains the role of Reuben’s mandrakes in fertilizing the barren Rachel. Equally fascinating is his discussion of the mandrake, a wondrous weed and sire of legend and superstition.
Ober shows why an unfamiliar composer named František Koczwara got himself hanged in a London whorehouse. He tells of the aborted homosexual sadism in Robert Musil; the murder, madrigals, and masochism in the life of composer Carlo Gesualdo; the iconography of leprosy; the iconography of Fanny Hill (or how to illustrate a dirty book); the melancholia of Johnson and Boswell; the short, miserable life of Rimbaud; and other mysteries to which medicine may hold the key.

Book Description
The first edition of Design and Analysis of Cross-Over Trials quickly became the standard reference on the subject and has remained so for more than 12 years. In that time, however, the use of cross-over trials has grown rapidly, particularly in the pharmaceutical arena, and researchers have made a number of advances in both the theory and methods applicable to these trials. Completely revised and updated, the long-awaited second edition of this classic text retains its predecessor's careful balance of theory and practice while incorporating new approaches, more data sets, and a broader scope. Enhancements in the second edition include: · A new chapter on bioequivalence · Recently developed methods for analyzing longitudinal continuous and categorical data · Real-world examples using the SAS system · A comprehensive catalog of designs, datasets, and SAS programs available on a companion Web site at www.crcpress.com The authors' exposition gives a clear, unified account of the design and analysis of cross-over trials from a statistical perspective along with their methodological underpinnings. With SAS programs and a thorough treatment of design issues, Design and Analysis of Cross-Over Trials, Second Edition sets a new standard for texts in this area and undoubtedly will be of direct practical value for years to come.

Healing from abuse..........2004-01-30
This book inspired me to work on healing myself, in order that my children will not be forced to cope with the legacy from my past. Daisys Will Grow Anywhere made me realize the terrible tragedy all abuse survivors carry in their hearts, regardless of whether they want to deal with it or not. So many years and so many lives have been wasted because of abuse. It drains us of our confidence, our self-esteem and our joy. We're left with a shell of the person we should have been and no defenses to protect us. Once I read Daisys, I knew what I had to do. I knew there was no other choice. This book inspired me to end the abuse and stop the cycle. Maybe it will do the same for many others.

Book Description
As a young man in England, James Chatto had worked as a waiter, dishwasher, and occasional cook. As a boy, he had learned about restaurants from his godfather, the actor Robert Morley, who was also a food critic for Punch and Playboy. When he came to Canada in the early 1980s he decided to parlay his appetite and experience into a career and began writing about restaurants for Toronto Life Magazine. Since then he has spent most of his nights, and not a few of his days, in Toronto’s culinary demi-monde, chronicling an extraordinary transformation.
Over a period of twenty years, Torontonians, newly affluent and increasingly well traveled, discovered the world of food and wine. Eating out became a form of recreation. Hundreds of new restaurants opened their doors, and some of the people who created them became celebrities. In certain circles it began to matter whether you had been to Franco’s new place, had tasted Sasur’s latest invention, or could spell radicchio.
This is a book about how the restaurant business became show business, and about the tycoons, artists, dilettantes, journeymen cooks, gifted gastronomical junkies, and ambitious entrepreneurs who made it happen. It is about fortunes made and lost, reputations built and squandered, written by a man who observed these events from the best seat in the house.
James Chatto brings to his a cosmopolitan objectivity and an Englishman’s irreverence. The result is a perceptive, sometimes funny, often poignant memoir in which the reader joins the writer as he makes his rounds, eating, hanging out with chefs and maître d’s, and eavesdropping on the late-night gossip of waiters.
The Man Who Ate Toronto - like a fine wine or an unforgettable meal is meant to be savoured and shared.

Book Description
Hitler's Vienna explores the critical, formative years that the young Adolf Hitler spent in Vienna. It is both a cultural and political portrait of the Austrian capital and a biography of Hitler during his years there, from 1906 to 1913. Hitler's was not the modern, artistic "fin-de-siecle Vienna" we associate with Freud, Mahler, and Wittgenstein. Instead, it was a cauldron of fear and ethnic rivalry and a breeding ground for racist political theories. Brigitte Hamann vividly depicts the undercurrent of disturbing ideologies that flowed beneath the glitter of the Hapsburg capital. Drawing on previously untapped sources that range from personal reminiscences to the records of homeless shelters where the unemployed Hitler spent his nights, Hamann gives us the fullest account ever rendered of this period of Hitler's life and shows us how profoundly his years in Vienna influenced his later career.
Customer Reviews:
A Detailed Account of Hitler's Early Life!.......2007-06-02
Adolf Hitler remains one of the most despised of all dictators. His hatred and anti-Semitism and destruction of over six million European Jews as well as Poles, Slavics, Gypsies, Jehovah's Witnesses are well documented. But in order to see how monsters like Hitler and Stalin came to be, we must understand their backgrounds, environments, and upbringings. In this well-researched and detailed book by Brigitte Hamann, you will find it richingly informative and shocking at times as well. We get to know what life was life in Hitler's Vienna which he despised and his close, loving relationship with Klara Hitler, his beloved mother. We learn about his relatives, ancestry which he tried desperately to destroy or change to alter his own public image to his people. The racism between Aryans and non-Aryans were well documented before World War II in Austria. This book is an invaluable tool in understanding how Hitler came to be this monster.
As I read the book, I digest the information slowly because there is so that I don't know. The author is really detailed in explaining and citing information. There are about 40 pages of citations at the end. There is a lot of information to know about like life in Vienna before World War I. The politics around Vienna is quite fascinating and disturbing as the small political groups. By reading this book, you will begin to understand the world of which a monster was raised in. We learn about his family relations, his time in hostels, his friendships, his art and love for architecture, his close relationship with his mother, the author pulls no punches or leaves anything out about Hitler's early life. He was somebody who rised from the shadows and became a monster in his own right. What fascinated me the most about this book was the separtist groups in Vienna, who would have thought that other ethnic groups like Czechs, Poles, Slavics, and even Germans posed a threat against Austrian way of life. Hitler's Austrian background and the feeling of his own inferiority and the class differences help the readers understand how he began to think including the prejudice and deep hatred that he felt for the non-Aryans and non-Germans. I didn't know anything about the prejudices and friction and problems amongst the groups in Vienna then. I have never been to Vienna but I still think of it as the ultimate classical place to spend New Year's Eve. The more I read, the more I understand the circumstances around Hitler's Vienna and you always wonder might have been if Hitler became a successful artist or if his mother had not died. Oh what might have been so different that millions of lives wouldn't have been lost that is what we can't lose sight of is that millions of innocent lives, children, women, and men died because of this one man's obsession.
Interesting narrative of Hitler's early years.......2003-07-24
Though this book is better in the original German (it loses something in the translation), Hamann is a diligent researcher who has unearthed some new facts about Hitler's period in Vienna. She uses primary sources and archive material without merely rehashing what other biographies have written in the past. The Franz Jetzinger book from the 50's is still the standard, definitive version of Hitler's Vienna years, but Hamann does a nice job and weaves in some new material. She also adroitly dismisses some claims from other German authors who have inaccurately written about Hitler's relationship with early roommate, August (Gustl) Kubizek. Thankfully, Hamann doesn't indulge in psychoanalyzing Hitler, which is sort of a deranged cottage industry amongst more recent Hitler biographers.
One small criticism is that Hamann veers away from Hitler too frequently. There is a plethora of material about Vienna's political climate in the 1910's, its mayor, the origin of anti-Semitism in the city and other ancillary details. Though all of this is relevant to Hitler, one wishes she would have stayed a bit more on topic. Still, the book is interesting, informative and devoid of errors. If you want to learn more about the young Hitler, this is an acceptable choice.
The key to Mein Kampf.......2003-04-01
Brigitte Hamann has done a remarkable thing with this book. By examining Vienna during Hitler's formative years, she has unlocked a lot of mystery surrounding the great man himself. While it is true that she uncovered discrepancies in Hitler's description of those years in Mein Kampf, her real contribution is in helping the reader to understand what Hitler was talking about, and why he said the things he said.
Particularly useful is Hamann's analysis of the prominent politicians of the day. She first described these leaders and their political ups and downs. Then, with the testimony of the witnesses who knew Hitler during those years, she deftly draws a picture of the formative influences that helped shape the mature dictator. Hitler was obsessed with politics and he learned what worked and what did not work during those early years in Vienna. Many of his later policies first saw the light of day in the Vienna of his youth. There is a chilling passage about the problem of gypsy pickpockets expected for the 60 Anniversary Parade in honor of Emperor Franz Joseph, in 1908. One solution, seriously presented in Parliament at the time, was to tattoo a number on the forearm of every gypsy.
Hamann also provides an in-depth analysis of the Austro-Hungarian attempt at a multi-ethnic parliamentarism, the chaos and the inefficiency that it brought, and the consequent neglect for the common people. The Pan-German movement, which clearly influenced the young Hitler is clearly explained in considerable detail. At times while reading this book, I had to pause and remind myself that the period under review presaged the rise of Adolf Hitler to power by some 20 years!
Out of the murk emerges Hitler as a young man obsessed by politics, hot tempered, forceful in argument, with poor work habits, odd hours, and a penchant for talk. Hamann's decision to look at the politics that helped him to formulate his world view is brilliant history. This fascinating book is very worthy of your attention.
Good book, but the original is better!.......2002-12-02
I really liked this book as it offered some new facts as opposed to regurgitating the same points already in circulation about Hitler and his youth. Hamann is a great historian of our time, and those of you fluent in German would be well advised to get ahold of this book in the original.
A Valuable Study.......2001-12-26
I thought I knew a lot about Adolf Hitler's life, even his youth, until I stumbled upon this book. Hitler's Vienna provides a fascinating glimpse into the social, economic, and political milieu in which young Hitler found himself immersed when he came from the provinces to the capital of the crumbling Austro-Hungarian empire in order to pursue his dream of a career in art or architecture.
The book is really less about Hitler himself than about the forces which helped to shape his weltanschauung. Though he reportedly not an anti-Semite as a youth, it was in Vienna that Hitler learned the language of anti-semitism and nationalism.
As I engrossed myself in the book, my thoughts often wandered to comparing the identity politics and quota demands of Austro-Hungarian politicians with the increasing ethnic balkanization here in the United States and wondered whether such a man as Hitler could not one day spring from our political landscape.
One of the chief things I learned is that political and ethnic anti-Semitism was already a very potent force among both the more radical German-nationalist followers of Georg Schoenerer as well as among the more mainstream supporters of the enormously popular mayor of Vienna, Karl Lueger. There was also a large groundswell of anti-Czech sentiment due to a heavy flow of Czechs into Vienna and to the mistreatment by Czechs of Germans in Sudetenland, a situation that Hitler was later to temporarily rectify.
The most surprising fact about Hitler brought to light is that he had many Jewish friends during his Vienna days. And I had to laugh at the part where he was described by a former fellow boarder at the men's hostel as having arrived wearing shoulder-length hair and wearing nothing but a coat because he didn't have a shirt.
Though the book adds much to what we knew of Hitler, it comes no closer than any other of really getting inside his head to explain his true motivations. After all, hundreds of thousands of Europeans hated Jews and lived through the same hardships that young Hitler did, but only Hitler took that extra step and made the end of Jewry his life's work. Nevertheless, this book is a very valuable study and is an easy and fascinating read that comes highly recommended to all those who yearn to know more about the life and times of Adolf Hitler.

Book Description
This is a book about growing up in the last years (1950's-1960's) of the old South, and in the shadow of Birmingham, Alabama. Many of the people, events, and circumstances of those years made Alabama, the Heart of Dixie, and the entire South the center of attention for the nation and for the world. While big newsworthy events were occurring that eventually led to the end of the old South, smaller events were occurring in the lives of ordinary people that also resulted in profound change. This book chronicles such events in the life of the author. His life, like that of most Southerners of his time, unfolded in light of three basic and daily realities: race, religion, and roots (family). Through stories like Fish Tail and Her Bag, Hamburger Memories, and Remembering Selma, the author takes the reader on a journey back to a time that merits never being forgotten.

Product Description
Growing up in Selma, Alabama, during the height of the Civil Rights Movement, Joyce Adams Jones recalls participating in history-making marches and personally meeting Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Reverend Jesse Jackson, and Reverend Abernathy, among other great leaders. As a young teenager, Jones endured horrific treatment by segregationists and police officers. She and some of the other marchers were sprayed with teargas, shocked with cattle prods, and beaten with bats and billy clubs. Remembering the Marches in Selma, Alabama is a heartfelt tribute to those who courageously fought for civil rights in America during the turbulent 1950s and 1960s.

The controversial Mayor of Milwaukee for 28 years, Henry Maier's career is the stuff of legends. This book is written with the heart and soul that made him legendary.
Customer Reviews:
Great historical information.......2007-06-18
Henry Maier was the mayor of Milwaukee for 28 years. In this book he gives a very interesting description of the major and minor events during his term. It is very fascinating for anyone who wants to learn more about Milwaukee's recent history. Some of the chapters are about Summerfest, the 1967 riots, Milwaukee's waste management company, a proposed prison in the Menomonee River Valley, the Bucks' arena, and his reelection campaigns.
I am giving this book five stars because of its information on almost all of the different topics in Milwaukee's recent history. This is a great book to read because it gives you accurate information on topics that are very important to know about. I also enjoy this book very much because it is interesting to find out different people's points of view. You should order this book if you want to find out information about a modern American city from 1960 until 1988. I hope you buy this book, and if you do, I hope you find the information interesting. Thank you for taking the time to read my review.
good look at some turning points of Mlwke in recent years.......1999-06-16
More than a history of Milwaukee, Mayor Maier discusses several major issues that confronted him and the city of Milwaukee during his terms in office (1960-1988). He talks about his reactions to the race riots in 1967, battles against the Milwaukee press, and other local issues. It was interesting to see how this mayor handled himself in the local political arena. He spends alot of time making a pitch for urban issues to the reader. This book is interesting for anyone that enjoys the nitty gritty of local politics, or is curious about how certain things came to be in Milwaukee.

Essays and Autobiography.......2006-08-07
Söderman dedicates his book to Carl A. Hagglund, D.D., who taught religion, and Edmond Locard, D.M., M.J., the director of the Police Laboratory at Lyons, France who taught criminology. It has a table of Contents but no index. Söderman died suddenly just as this book was completed. These essays tell of his life and experiences as a policeman and criminologist.
The first part is about "Lyons and Edmond Locard". Chapter 1 tells how they detected the murderer of a 9-year old girl from jute fibers, dog hair, and tire tracks. There was no final proof of guilt. The three judges found the suspect guilty of manslaughter (p.13). Chapter 3 tells of his manor farm and domestic life. Söderman never read detective fiction (except Sherlock Holmes as a youth). The sordid aspects of crime are never found in fiction (Chapter 4). Chapter 5 tells of studying under Edmond Locard, and Locard's achievements found in the seven volume 'Traite de Criminalistique". Chapter 6 tells of Söderman's life as an apprentice detective and of his coworkers. Wealth and social standing affect the course of justice (p.35). Chapter 7 tells of his adventures as a young man. His first case as a questioned document examiner is in Chapter 8. The techniques of handwriting analysis are not precise in comparisons (p.59). Chapter 9 has other examples. The next chapter discusses the problems of counterfeiting. Chapter 12 tells of a raid on a gambling operation. Söderman was a witness at an execution (Chapter 13). Society uses violence to punish or prevent violence (Chapter 14). Söderman tells of a country poisoning case.
Identifying a body has effects: a missing person, inheritance, suspected foul play (Chapter 15). Its not a good idea to dine before visiting a morgue. Fingerprints were first used to identify pensioners (p.131). Toeprints, palm, and footprints are also unique. A most puzzling fingerprint case was solved personally by Locard (p.141). Ears can identify a person (p.145). Crimes are generally committed by those who profit from them. Chapter 16 tells about prostitution in France, and arresting a drug-dealer at a restaurant. The United States has the bulk of drug traffic (p.160)! "The Glozel Affair" explains why vertical digging authenticates found objects. Söderman received a degree on the identification of bullets and cartridges fired by pistols and rifles.
The second part is about "Stockholm and New York". Söderman returned to Stockholm as a document examiner. Chapter 21 tells how to handle anonymous letters; the writers of these enjoy sadistic pleasure. The usual sign of murder is a corpse; they are difficult to dispose (Chapter 22). Chapter 24 explains the realities of police work: there are priorities (p.250). There can be no perfect crime because there are so many imponderables. Söderman tells about various crooks and swindlers he encountered (Chapter 25). Lust and greed cause almost all criminal violence (Chapter 26). Some interesting cases are discussed. Chapter 27 tells about self-destruction and the many methods. The third part is called "Policeman's World". Criminology is a new science, and crime is part of human nature. Does heredity or environment create a criminal? Pavlovian conditioning? Chapter 28 has a brief history and interesting stories. In Chapter 29 he discusses society and criminals, "Present and Future". Chapter 30 tells of his experiences on the International Criminal Police Commission before and after WW II.
