              Book Description

The CEO selection and succession process is notoriously dysfunctional. Often, the wrong person is selected or the right person is put into a situation that blocks them from doing a good job. This is the first book on the topic to address the interrelationships between the five key groups in the CEO selection process--boards, HR executives, recruiters, CEOs, and CEO candidates. The authors also identify the fatal flaws in the current CEO selection systems and offer recommendations for creating a process that will guarantee the best leadership outcome possible. The book is filled with helpful insider examples and anecdotes to illustrate how this often ineffectual process can be righted.

5 out of 5 stars Savy and Experienced.......2003-07-15

Fred Wackerlee has been on the forefront of senior executive recruiting for many years. I have been waiting for this book and frankly I have not been disappointed. It is the best. Bravo Fred! He captures the intersancum of what happens in CEO selection & succession. He should know - he has been there and has the street smarts to see what is really happening. Fred knows the myths of the CEO succession process and why today it needs changing - especially with the malfeasance of the 90s. This book is a must-read for executives & academics who care about the future of free enterprise, corporate leadership, talent and stockholders.

              5 out of 5 stars From a Winner in a Treacherous Arena.......2003-04-24

Fred Wackerle's book, The Right CEO, is the work of a big picture, comprehensive mind centered on a subject of practical action that stands as first priority in today's leadership vacuum in the top management of our corporations. Most books by consultants bore us into a stupor or show off with charts and graphs and arcane language that do little to show us a proven way when we want guidance in an area of supreme importance to us. And we want that in as clear and brief a form as possible without selling out to simplistic solutions. This book has authority stamped all over it. The author has competed in a treacherous arena and emerged victorious-all without bragging about it.

No current CEOs considering their successors, no boards of directors responsible for those successions, no heads of human resources seeking to be stand up catalysts for those successions, no consultant called on to conduct the searches for those successors, and no potential candidates for CEO positions should enter this arena Wackerle has written about without his threadbare book in their hands.

Many books start out strong and fizzle as they move toward their conclusion. This book starts out strong and just gets stronger, weaving early points into constantly enlarged lessons that are a rich diet for the reader hungry to learn how a CEO search can be conducted expertly. The result of such a search is to land a CEO in the job who not only is the right person at the right time at the right company, but a CEO secure-at home in her own skin. Because she's at ease with herself, other people are at ease with her.

I said the book is practical-step-by-step straightforward without big words, but it's also wise and futuristic. The important thrust of Wackerle's message is that the work of a CEO search is collaborative, where the principals in the action conduct themselves in complete candor-yet matched by trust. That's a skill worth working at and mastering!

              5 out of 5 stars A tremendous learning tool!.......2002-07-17

Fred Wackerle is a well known Executive Search Consultant who has delivered a product that is based on years of experience working with Boards on CEO searches and succession issues. His book is a great expose on the interworkings of the CEO hiring process, the problems that exist and continue to go on in many organizations. The book clearly outlines the search process from five different perspectives, the Board Search Committee, the CEO, the potential candidates, the CHRO and the Executive Search Consultant. Using a sample company, Fred describes the issues impacting each participant, identifies the pitfalls and the corrective action required to eliminate the problems. The author accurately describes the right way to execute a CEO search for each of the five participants and includes the steps each must follow to conclude a successful search.

There is a definite need to inform, educate and hold accountable Boards of Directors for the proper selection of a CEO. "The Right CEO" outlines a process participants should follow is must reading for all Board Members and all participants involved in the CEO selection process.

5 out of 5 stars The CEO selection process is broken........2001-12-04

Fred Wackerle has written a book that will become the conscience for all of us involved in CEO selection. He captures the essence of what really happens...he's been there. He reveals the myths of the CEO succession process and why today it is broken. The book is must-reading for anyone who cares about the future of corporate leadership. Having successfully recruited CEO successors, Fred has come to believe that many decision-makers in the CEO search and selection process - especially board members - are in the dark about what it takes to find top executive talent.

In this amazingly frank book, Wackerle illustrates the darker side of CEO selection and board governance by characterizing the key players in the typical succession process: the head of the search committee,a board member and Harvard Business School classmate beholden to the current CEO; the chief HR executive, now torn between serving two masters; an executive search consultant with questionable values and who may not have the experience to take on an assignment of this nature and magnitude; and finally, the CEO "wannabe" who is so naive about accepting the top job that he jeopardizes his entire career. The process is rife with conflicts and complexities.

5 out of 5 stars The Right CEO.......2001-12-02

Ever hear the cliche, "He wrote the book!"? Well, in the case of THE RIGHT CEO, it's not a cliche at all. Fred Wackerle really has written THE BOOK on this topic. It's the real deal, the definitive treatise if you will, on CEO selection. THE RIGHT CEO is filled with uncommon wisdom and genuine lessons of experience. Whereas some good books are written by people who research an interesting topic, then write about their findings or opinions; here's a book written by someone who really is an expert, who has "lived" the subject matter, and has plenty of facts, evidence and real people and stories to back it up. Now, if only THE RIGHT PEOPLE (like Boards of Directors)would read it...

                Product Description

Astronomers have long looked in vain for evidence of worlds orbiting other stars, but technological advances have made such discoveries far more regular. Several teams continuously work on the planet search using a variety of techniques and equipment; as a result, we know of 161 planetary candidates in 135 star systems, from 8.25 to 9,000 light-years from Earth. This work summarizes information on all the extrasolar planets discovered. Each planet is described in as much detail as is available with graphs indicating how the planet orbits its primary. Details on the primary are given. Additionally, the boundaries of the habitability zone around each star are plotted, and information about the likelihood of terrestrial planets existing in each system is provided. Five appendices are included on such topics as withdrawn and tentative discoveries, the constellations, and masses and orbital characteristics of extrasolar planets.

Extrasolar Planets: A Catalog Of Discoveries In Other Star Systems by astronomy enthusiast Terry Kepner very nicely summarizes the current state of our information about 161 planetary candidates in 135 star systems ranging from 8.25 to 9,000 light-years from Earth. The superbly written and presented text is enhanced with graphs indicating how the planet orbits its primary with details on the primary provided as well. The boundaries of the "habitability zone" around each star are plotted, and information about the likelihood of terrestrial category plants existing in each system is included as well. Additionally, there are five appendices included covering such topics as withdrawn and tentative discovers, the constellations, as well as masses and orbital characteristics of extrasolar planets. Terry Kepner's Extrasolar Plants is sufficiently scholarly to warrant its inclusion into academic library Astronomical Studies collections, as well as ideal for the non-specialist general reader with an interest in astronomy.

                  Book Description

This volume explains the theory and experimental investigations in the preparation of heterophase polymer network materials through cure reaction-induced microphase separation (CRIMPS). It describes the synthesis of a new family of block- and graft-copolymers with controlled solubility in epoxies and characterizes CRIMPS processes using novel applications of known methods such as nuclear magnetic resonance, electron spin resonance and photochemistry. The text develops a new method for characterizing the molecular mass distribution (MMD) of linear and network polymers using thermomechanical analysis data, as well as new methods for determining internal stresses and flaw formation during thermoset curing. The CRIMPS theory will be helpful for researchers and engineers designing and improving toughened plastics and other smart heterophase network materials for different applications. The new method for MMD characterization of polymers in bulk will be very useful to quickly analyze a polymer's MMD and to design new polymers. This book will provide a useful reference for graduates, researchers and working professionals in polymer chemistry and physics and materials science.

                  1 out of 5 stars Bad Math.......2006-03-30

1.32 - 16.84 (1.32 minus 16.84) is a negative number (-15.52)! Not +15.52! (See page 47). When you subtract a larger number from a smaller number, the result is ALWAYS negative number. This book makes this same mistake over and over! See pages 29,30,31,32, 34, and I'll bet there is more! Nurses watch out! Do not use bad math! How did the publisher release this book with out reviewing the math?

Very, very pleased with the book! It was practically new!

4 out of 5 stars Nice book, but with mistakes.......2003-06-14

As a new nursing student I have found this book very useful. There is a very comprehensive introduction which allows the student to relearn some of the math skills that may have been lost over the year. I also really like the fact that the book comes with a removable laminated card with conversions on it. I'm sure that this will come in quite handy when I begin my clinicals.
My only real complaint is that I have found a couple of mistakes in the fifth edition. I found at least two mistake in the answers provided for the chapter review on apothecaries' measurements. I would recommend that the publisher check their material a little better so as to prevent confusion for students.

                    Book Description

David Scott Kastan lucidly explores the remarkable richness and the ambitious design of King Henry IV Part 1 and shows how these complicate any easy sense of what kind of play it is. Conventionally regarded as a history play, much of it is in fact conspicuously invented fiction, and Kastan argues that the non-historical, comic plot does not simply parody the historical action but by its existence raises questions about the very nature of history. The full and engaging introduction devotes extensive discussion to the play's language, indicating how its insistent economic vocabulary provides texture for the social concerns of the play and focuses attention on the central relationship between value and political authority.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent version of a great play.......2007-09-03

The play needs no commentary by me. This edition is impressive. This is the first Arden Third Series play I've read, and I find it better overall than any other commented version I've used. I bought the Arden Second Series of Henry IV, Part 2, because we're going to both plays this weekend, and the Third Series is not out yet. I was surprised how much better the Third Series is. The typography and layout make it easier to read than any other footnoted edition I've read. The notes are on the same page as the text, where they are easy to refer to, but they are in a smaller font size and in two columns, which differentiates them from the text and makes them less distracting. The headings of the notes are bold, rather than italic, which makes them quicker to locate. The text notes, of interest only to specialists, are in an even smaller font and have been moved to the bottom of the page. The result is that the extensive notes are readily accessible when I need them, yet minimally distracting when I don't.

The Introduction is long, but interesting and helpful. Being no expert, I don't judge this editor's views and choices against those of others, but his reasoning is plausible and his approach seems down-to-earth, giving what seems like appropriate weight to the commercial motives and dynamic nature of dramas.

The notes explain more than some readers need, but that's better than explaining too little for newcomers to Shakespeare.

The illustrations are interesting, and some are helpful. The map of places mentioned and the genealogies should be in every edition. The List of Roles is followed by two pages of notes about the characters. This is very helpful in keeping track of the characters, which is much harder to do when reading than when watching actors play the roles.

A cavil: I like the old-fashioned way of dealing with words ending in -ed, showing in the text when the e is stressed or elided. In this version, "unfamiliar typographic conventions have been avoided in order to minimize obstacles to the reader," and pronunciations are shown in the notes if they differ from modern usage. For me, this is more awkward than the old way, with the -'d or -èd right in the text.

5 out of 5 stars The making of a king (sort of).......2006-08-16

Following the plot of "Richard II", this play finds the usurper Bolingbroke, now King Henry IV, surrounded by enemies. In the beginning, Henry IV has a facedown with his former allies, Northumberland, Worcester and Hotspurs. They even regret having helped Bolingbroke to the throne. So, instead of going ahead with the king's plans for a new Crusade in the Middle East, Henry and his remaining allies have to face civil war. Due to the illegal way in which he acquired the crown, Henry feels insecure in the throne. Moreover, he has an other poignant source of worries: his eldest son and heir, Prince Hal, is not exactly a model of a young man. Instead of showing an interest in State affairs, he spends his time with a band of friends, led by the ineffable and immensely comic Sir John Falstaff. These rogues drink and womanize too much, but that wouldn't be much of a problem if they didn't assault travellers and commit other sort of criminal activities. King Henry IV scolds Hal for this behavior just when they have a war going on. Hal decides to mend his ways and join his father. Meanwhile, Falstaff is in charge of getting new recruits, but the quality of the latter suffers much when the fat rogue takes bribes from the best in order to escape service. Finally, Henry's party achieves an important (though not definitive) victory and Hal gains his father's respect, among other things, by saving him from a wound. But as they say, stay tuned, for this story continues in the second part.

Note that the major character in this and the next play is Falstaff himself, a man of undoubtedly bad behavior, but impossible not to like. Falstaff incarnates the Dyonisiac impulse, the joys of the flesh, and a free spirit devoid of any lust for power or glory. While the warrior Hotspur uplifts death and glory, Falstaff asks for more life. For his part, Hal has discovered the adrenaline of war and power and his character is about to change.

Ardens are the best editions; this is the best of the new generation of Ardens--and it is a great play.

                    5 out of 5 stars a wonderful edition.......2003-10-10

If you want a scholarly edition of the play, this is the one: the introduction is an extended and brilliant essay on the play; the text is clearly presented, and the commentary full and useful; and the book itself is attractive and easy to use. It is perfect for teachers, grad. students, advanced undergraduates, and actors and directors involved with the play.

                    5 out of 5 stars about time!.......2003-09-13

Arden's are always wonderful but the Henry IV was almost 50 years old--at last there is a new edition and it was actually worth the wait! This is one of the best editions of any Shakespeare play I have ever seen. A must for any high school or college library. A must for any lover of Shakespeare.

4 out of 5 stars A quiet man from the other, other Washington.......2005-06-16

When people here someone say they are from Washington, they think D.C. or the other Washington "the state" which is associated with Seattle, rain, goatee's, Starbucks, Cobain, etc. Well this book talks of a quiet man from the other, other Washington (Eastside or Inland Empire) who rose through the political ranks to become a 20 plus year democrat from a conservative district to the 3rd most powerful man in America, Speaker of the House. Growing up in Eastern Washington, Foley was a familiar name but now I know why. Great story of his life. Mr. Biggs tells his tale, plus educates about the House of Representatives and the internal structure and processes. Along the way are stories and brief interjections by Speaker Foley. I learned a lot about Tom Foley, the House of Representatives and the process of legislation from this book. Sometimes it is tough to get through parts because there is so much political process and information to digest but I enjoyed it. Worth the read.

                        Book Description

Augusta Jane Evans Wilson (1835-1909) was one of nineteenth-century America's most popular novelists and outspoken supporters of the Confederacy. Her nine novels include the recently reissued Beulah, the stridently pro-Confederate Macaria, and the extremely successful St. Elmo, which had sales rivaling those of Uncle Tom's Cabin and Ben-Hur. In addition to writing best-selling books, Wilson was a powerful letter-writer whose correspondents included prominent Confederate leaders. Wilson's epistles, 112 of which are gathered in this volume, reveal the depth of her ambitions for herself and the Confederacy.

Wilson worked hard to place herself at the center of action during the Civil War and after the surrender assiduously maintained her correspondence with prominent people of her day. In addition to writing Confederate propaganda, her wartime activities included an extended correspondence with General P. G. T. Beauregard and Confederate congressman Jabez L. M. Curry. In her letters Wilson reviews battle plans and military policy, offers political advice, and illumines the hardships suffered by southerners. Her correspondence portrays her as an assertive, well-educated woman who addressed powerful men on equal terms and only occasionally lapsed into traditional feminine deference. Of equal interest, the volume includes Wilson's writings to friends, publishers, fans, and family members. Wilson's working correspondence with her editors and myriad admirers captures her views on the purposes of fiction, the trials of publishing during the war, and the difficulties of combining career and family.

Don't be put off by the goofy subtitle to this rich but meandering account of Greek history and myth as it touches on Mykonos, a picturesque island that had only a small part to play in ancient history, and its tiny and deserted neighboring isle, Delos, a shrine for centuries, where the god Apollo was supposed to have been born and which is still studded with the white marble ruins of temples. Although Delos is now only a curiosity for the history buff or the archeologist, Mykonos ranks among the most-visited resorts in the world, with its long beaches, spare, scrubby hillsides, and stunning views over the Aegean. It is certainly among the top 10 gay vacation spots, and it was as tourists that James Davidson and his friends first discovered the island and fell under its spell. One Mykonos is a meditation on place with an inescapable emphasis on time, grounded as much in Davidson's memories as in his sparkling scholarship. --Regina Marler

                                            Book Description

The Giants were the cousins of the Olympians, who rebelled and were defeated. "When all the gods had slaked their thirst for particular vengeance there were still a few Giants left over, dead in all their various shapes and sizes. Hercules looked around a bit to see if anyone was looking, then brushed them all under one Mykonos."In antiquity, Mykonos had little going for it, apart from being the sibling island to Delos, birthplace of Apollo. The Persians regrouped there after their defeat in 490 BCE at Marathon. Throughout most of the first 1000 years CE regular pillaging by the Turks impoverished the inhabitants. With its labrynthine streets and minimal buildings, it became a haven, hiding spies all the way up through the Napoleonic and First World Wars. James Davidson, a brilliant young classical scholar, visited Mykonos for the gay Festival of the Twelve Gods and found it a hedonistic paradise. Although he is in modern Mykonos, ancient Mykonos' history and mythology periodically consume the narrative, asserting their influence and power. Part travelogue, part classical history, part personal essay, part mythology, this is a witty and fascinating gem of a book.

                                            Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars An essential little book IF you are traveling to Mykonos..........2000-10-26

I wanted to love this book. Like so many others I long to experience the magic of Mykonos and opted for this book as a surrogate. It is well written, but it is more for the reader interested in Greek history than those who expect to discover the essence of an island, a haven, a fantasy. Highly recommended as a suitcase tuck if you're planning a vacation to the Greek Islands, but if you crave the flavor of the place this is a disappointingly dry read.

5 out of 5 stars Mykonos & Much, Much More!.......2000-07-26

I wasn't sure I was going to enjoy this book, but I'm now convinced I loved it. James Davidson, that handsome, brilliant young classical scholar from London has given us a small book (5 ½ in.by 7 ½, & 151 Pages). However, this book may be small in size and page number but is full of great information. It's part travelogue, classical history, mythology, and personal essay about the island of Mykonos. Mykonos is among the top 10 gay vacation spots today. Davidson gives us his impressions and feelings, as well as a wonderful history of this beautiful island.

This is a fascinating read, and now I know I definitely want to visit this Greek island of Mykonos. Reading Mr. Davidson's wonderful book made me feel as if I actually had visited there already. It's nice to know the history of a place, and this book gives you that, but you also get his feelings about life there, too. Make sure you read this one; highly recommended.
