5 out of 5 stars Your Attitude Is Showing.......2004-02-16

Who moved my Attitude? Chapman!! As an avid reader of books geared towards helping me cope with my personal and professional development, I know a GREAT book when I find it. Getting ahead in your career, goal-setting, working with difficult people, and teams & diversity, are just a few of subjects covered in this book. Before reading this book I wasn't really familar with the many aspects of "human relations". Now I know that "human relations" encompasses every aspect of my life and how to balance all the things that I need to. I highly recommend this book for anyone who needs to have a more pleasant and productive career/work environment, seeking to move up the corporate ladder, and for those who wish to learn the skills needed to balance work and home.

2 out of 5 stars Authors' attitudes are showing..........2006-07-12

The slant of this book is hard to ignore.

It emphasizes the importance of "go along to get along" over almost all else.

In the battle between individuals and big companies for who controls individual will, who owns the knowledge in an individual's head, and how much of an individual's life belongs to the organization, "Your Attitude is Showing" is a white flag for anyone with an independant mind.

The authors' arguments for why a person should (must) set aside self and individuality for the good of the company and wishes of the management are flawed. It assumes that there will be good things to come for the person who improves attitudes, and fails to consider the grander issues, like whether it's desireable for a society as a whole to create a sea of automatons with great attitudes.

To this book, my answer would be: success comes not through smiles and gladhanding. To build a world with any aspirations of justice and peace, we need more than just attitude. We need substance, people who will work hard, and honesty.

Solving human relations problems requires something a bit stronger than the band-aid of day to day attitudes that this book prescribes.

                              Book Description

The two basic building units carbon and hydrogen can be combined in a million different ways to give a plethora of fascinating organic compounds. Henning Hopf presents not only the most remarkable structures and properties of hydrocarbon compounds but shows in a clear presentation and with great didactic skill how molecules like dodecahedrane, superphane or annulenes challenge the synthetic skills of every organic chemist. To make the information more accessible, especially to the novice, the author carefully analyzes the synthetic problem, explains each synthetic step and gives hints on alternative methods and potential pitfalls. Numerous references to useful reviews and the original literature make this book an indispensable source of further information. Special emphasis is placed on the skillful use of graphics and schemes: Synthetic (retro)analyses, reaction sequences, and crucial steps are presented in blue boxed sections within the text. Graduate students and researchers alike will find this book a gold mine of useful information essential for their daily work. Every organic chemist will want to have a copy on his or her desk.

                              Book Description

Nonlinear measurement data arise in a wide variety of biological and biomedical applications, such as longitudinal clinical trials, studies of drug kinetics and growth, and the analysis of assay and laboratory data. Nonlinear Models for Repeated Measurement Data provides the first unified development of methods and models for data of this type, with a detailed treatment of inference for the nonlinear mixed effects and its extensions. A particular strength of the book is the inclusion of several detailed case studies from the areas of population pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, immunoassay and bioassay development and the analysis of growth curves.

5 out of 5 stars great coverage of theory and applications.......2000-08-09

Analysis of repeated measurement data is commonplace in clinical trials and there is a great body of literature and books on the repeated measures analysis using linear models. The many fine texts on repeated measure linear models are often found with the term longitudinal data analysis because the repeated measurements are given over time. As Davidian and Giltinan point out htere is a need for nonlinear models in the case of pharmacokinetics trials. The theory is new and is presented here in a text for the first time. The authors provide many real applications from their experience. They present a good mix of theory and applications. Thorough references to the literature are given. Even though the development is new the authors do treat the computational aspects. Software implementation for Bayesian Hierarchical models is also mentioned. SAS macros that have been developed are also covered. The methodology is developed in the first eight chapters with applications and case studies in Chapters 9-11. Chapter 12 provides open problems to interest researchers. It contains useful information for practitioners but requires mathematical sophistication.

Good book for unusual species of crabs, starfish, shrimp, jellyfish that are not seen in the marine hobby. I would have like a little more information/description on some of the species depicted, but an overall good book for species in the area.

Born into high society on the eastern shore of Maryland, Jacquelin Gorman's family was said to "have everything." But scratch away the paint from this 1960s family portrait and you'll find the oldest son Robin, who was sent away to a mental institution because of his autism when he was 12. In 1991 Gorman mysteriously went blind for 10 months. This heartrending memoir simultaneously defines and inspires resiliency. Rather than succumbing to terror, Gorman allowed her blindness to help her recall the love and memories of her brother that she had dutifully erased so many years before.

                                      Book Description

When a rare optic condition strikes Jacquelin Gorman, colors one by one vanish from her spectrum, and her vision begins to falter. She finds herself in a race against the encroaching darkness, frantically studying family photos, the faces of her daughter and husband, and the geography of her home, committing them to the realm of memory. Once her world fades to black, she relives moments from her childhood--and memories of her autistic brother, Robin--in nightly Technicolor dreams. During her siege of blindness, Gorman finds innocence and courage in her brother's brief, tragic life--and a pure, unquestioning love that illuminates her darkness with the healing, eternal light of love.

                                      5 out of 5 stars splendidly touching.......2003-12-13

As the parent of an autistic child this book touched every nerve in my body, from the mother who is tormented to the children (siblings) who don't understand, to the grandfather who says Robin must go to an institution to save the rest of the family. For a short time, the author goes blind (of course, when and if her sight returns is not known while she is struggling through this terrifying bout of blindness). While she is trying to navigate her own new world with her family, she dreams of her brother. While her world is black and white, she dreams in color and has vivid recollections of growing up with an autistic brother in a time when nothing was known about autism. I have had people tell me they cried at the end of the book from an overwhelming sense of sadness. But, I felt oddly at peace that this sister was able to develop a full blown appreciation for her brother and now, as an adult, has a tender memory of him and for his place in the family.

4 out of 5 stars The Seeing Glass: A Memoir.......2002-05-03

Jacquelin Gorman was born in a special family; her grandfather had been one of the world's best eye doctors, she has one brother and three sisters, all of the children on her family have watery blue eyes, and her brother, Robin, was [mentally handicapped]. This book is consisted of how Jacquelin recovered her eyesight and of valuable memories that has to do with Robin. Jacquelin had been scared of the dark ever since she was a little girl. After she lost her eyesight, Jacquelin went crazy. She had first tasted how it feels to be isolated. In the total darkness, she followed the footsteps of Robin's childhood by dreaming things that happened to Robin. She experienced several heart-breaking and heart-warming events that brought hope and light into her darkness.
I don't really understand some of the feelings that the author described in this book, but I am sort of touched by some of the scenes that came up in her memory. Through these scenes, I can see a little bit of how [mentally handicapped] people are treated in real life. They are despised, treated unfairly, and always seem to be the target for bullying. But, I can also see how people can still be so passionate and nice even when they are [mentally handicapped]. I learned that being [mentally handicapped] is simply having to learn slower than most other people. Being [mentally handicapped] doesn't mean that one loses his or her ability to care and love other people. It also doesn't mean that a [mentally handicapped] person doesn't need to be loved and cared for.
I think the best part in this book is when Jacquelin recalled a memory of Robin being taken away into Rosewood, a mental hospital. One time, Jacquelin witnessed the way Robin was brought into Rosewood hospital. At first, her mom drove Robin to the entrance of the hospital. Then Robin started to scream, trying to show how much he hated this place, but after a while, he calmed down. After he got out of the car, he said to Jacquelin, "I love you." But right before they entered the hospital, Robin screamed once again and ran back to the car. He told Jacquelin to unlock the door so he could get in, but her mom told her to keep Robin outside. Just when Jacquelin was about to open the door for him, two men came of the hospital and wrapped Robin in a big, white jacket; then they poked a big needle into his arm, which caused him to stop his struggling. Jacquelin didn't have the chance to tell him that she loves him too.
