Practical guides for human resource professionals to help improve overall organizational performance
Research isn't just for academics. Human resource professionals who incorporate it into their organizations see results. This guide demystifies the research process so HRD professionals can use it in their practices. Real-world examples show how research and theory can help solve everyday problems.
Customer Reviews:
Insightful!.......2001-02-16
If you work in human resources, the manual put together by editors Richard A. Swanson and Elwood F. Holton III will probably find its way onto a shelf close by your desk, where it can be easily reached as a reference tool. The chapters of this book, which were written by different authors but have been organized into a logical whole, help span the gap between theory and practice in the human resources field. You'll likely find yourself reaching for this dense, informative book every time your start planning a survey, training program or research project. If you're not in HR, this book is more likely to find its way into cardboard box on a dusty shelf at the back of a dark closet. The content, although quite innovative and detailed, is simply too specialized for a general readership. Therefore, we recommend this book to human resource professionals at all levels, and strongly encourage students of the discipline to study these pages before setting out in the real world of business.
BOOK CLUB SELECTION.......1999-11-09
In response to the research and practice focus of the book-- the "Human Resource Development Research Handbook" was honored by The Executive Program as one of their book club selections.
A very practical guide to carrying out research!.......1999-02-07
This text sets itself apart by outlining the first, basic steps in conducting research for those who are frightened or ill-equipped to conduct the structured research that is so clearly needed by the OD and HRD field. Structured research's outcome, the editors argue, "is new knowledge, obtained through an orderly, investigative process" (Swanson, p. 10). The process they ascribe to includes a theory-research-development-practice cycle, which the authors describe as a vital cycle that allows ideas to be progressively refined as they evolve from concepts to practices and from practices to concepts. The book details steps in conducting both qualitative and quantitative research. It is a practical, hands-on reference manual created by those who are well-experienced. A must for any graduate student!

Medical Malpractice in Nineteenth-Century America: Origins and Legacy (American Social Experience)
ASIN: 0801853982 |
Book Description
After the American Revolution, the new republic's most prominent physicians envisioned a society in which doctors, lawyers, and the state might work together to ensure public well-being and a high standard of justice. But as James C. Mohr reveals in Doctors and the Law, what appeared to be fertile ground for cooperative civic service soon became a battlefield, as the relationship between doctors and the legal system became increasingly adversarial.
Mohr provides a graceful and lucid account of this prfound shift from civic republicanism to marketplace professionalism. He shows how, by 1900, doctors and lawyers were at each other's throats, medical jurisprudence had disappeared as a serious field of study for American physicians, the subject of insanity had become a legal nightmare, expert medical witnesses had become costly and often counterproductive, and an ever-increasing number of malpractice suits had intensified physicians' aversion to the courts. In short, the system we have taken largely for granted throughout the twentieth century had been established. Doctors and the Law is a penetrating look at the origins of our inherited medico-legal system.

Book Description
Advances in bioproducts manufacturing such as the production of the anticancer drug paclitaxel by large-scale plant cell culture, submerged cultivation of medicinal mushrooms, and monoclonal antibody production are reflected. Interactions among molecular, cellular and process engineering aspects in industrial fermentations are discussed, and application of fuzzy control and fuzzy neural networks to practical production and the biomedical area are shown. For sustainable development and green processing, production of lactic acid from paper sludge, production of a generic fermentation feedstock from wheat, and fabrication and application of whole-cell based biosensors in the environment are also demonstrated.

Book Description
Handbook of Grid Generation addresses the use of grids (meshes) in the numerical solutions of partial differential equations by finite elements, finite volume, finite differences, and boundary elements. Four parts divide the chapters: structured grids, unstructured girds, surface definition, and adaption/quality. An introduction to each section provides a roadmap through the material. This handbook covers: · Fundamental concepts and approaches · Grid generation process · Essential mathematical elements from tensor analysis and differential geometry, particularly relevant to curves and surfaces · Cells of any shape - Cartesian, structured curvilinear coordinates, unstructured tetrahedra, unstructured hexahedra, or various combinations · Separate grids overlaid on one another, communicating data through interpolation · Moving boundaries and internal interfaces in the field · Resolving gradients and controlling solution error · Grid generation codes, both commercial and freeware, as well as representative and illustrative grid configurations Handbook of Grid Generation contains 37 chapters as well as contributions from more than 100 experts from around the world, comprehensively evaluating this expanding field and providing a fundamental orientation for practitioners.
Customer Reviews:
A disappointment.......2001-05-29
I bought this book in the hope that it would contain actual implementation details concerning the various methods; specifically prismatic and other unstructured methods. To say the least, this book is thick but it is filled with extraneous fluff without any real details. For instance, the chapter on prismatic grid generation is nothing but a lot of "hand-waving" without any concrete details and I can say the same concerning the rest of the book.
Also, it appears that many of the chapters in the book were included without a strict peer-review process as should be the process for a book of this type.
A broad survey.......2000-05-16
I bought the book with great interest because of the type of research I am currently involved in. For me, the book is a disappointment. I have seen two types of technical handbooks. One type is the usual handbook of mathematics (or more specialized in integrals or differential equations). This type gives the basic definitions and well-known facts about the concepts and topics. The other type of handbook is more advanced, covering specialized topics in depth. An example is the Handbook of Numerical Analysis, in which a wide range of topics are covered in depth. The reader (e.g. myself) can LEARN the fundemtals of a particular numerical theory by reading the handbook alone. The handbook under review, however, is of neither types. In some sense it is a compilation of review articles of various grid generation techniques while lacking the depth usually seen in such articles. I can imagine the difficulty in presenting grid generation in a systemtic manner as determined by the nature of the field. I did wish that the book could be something similar to the Numerical Receipes: not systematic but practical and very useful. But this is not the case. The book does contain lots of useful references, which probably justify its cost.

A wonderful book!!.......2006-01-08
Donna Jean is proof that life does go on even after a tragedy. I lost both of my parents when I was 10. This book was very relatable. It was just such a great book to read. It left me looking for more. You'll find this book hard to put down.
Painful Read.......2003-11-16
I quit reading this book after about 6 chapters. It was a laborious read and did not capture my interest. The author switches back and forth from first to third person to tell her story. The character development is not strong, particularly with the children. I had to keep referring back when I read a name to determine which child was being referenced. I just wasn't drawn into the story...a story which I'm sure was meant to be filled with heart and warmth.
I understand that this book is a first-time effort but the story reads like a journal of the therapeutic process for a woman whose personal growth was arrested by a painful loss. It would have best been left as a personal journal.
It simply struck me as the ramblings of a woman dwelling on a childhood lost. The stories are not particularly unique, as far as childhood memories go. I lost a parent myself as a young child but still could not connect with this story.

Intriguing, Educational essay on the practice of law 1940-60.......1999-04-04
This book was very enlightening and insightful on the practice of law in the 40's, 50's and 60's. It brought to life an era of controversy and injustice within an evolving America. It helps to explain these disruptive years of anti-communism and racial injustice amid the political struggles of a partisan society.

Excellent Book.......2006-01-07
As a history aficionado, I highly recommend Alan Grady's WHEN GOOD MEN DO NOTHING. It is well-researched, insightful, and gripping. Surely this book is on Alabama history teachers' list of recommendations. The book provides a window into the world of southern politics and demonstrates how geography, history, and human strengths and weaknesses make us what we are.
Additionally, the book is well-written. Mr. Grady has a way with words and seems to "turn-a-phrase" effortlessly. The writing is descriptive as well as clear.
A great read.
Completely Misses the Mark.......2004-12-17
I never could figure out where the author, Alan Grady, came up with the title "When Good Men Do Nothing." The story of Phenix City is a story about good men who sacrificed everything. If you are interested in what happened in Phenix City, Alabama and want to know about men who did something, like Hugh Bentley and Albert Patterson, then I would suggest you pick up a copy of Margaret Anne Barnes book "The Tragedy and the Triumph of Phenix City, Alabama." Alan Grady's book completely misses the mark.
Great Book!.......2004-03-29
I love history and I'm one of those buffs who usually slowly juggles several eras at once, some because of mild interest and others out of a sense of obligation. Last Friday, someone at work lent me Alan Grady's When Good Men Do Nothing, telling me he was positive I would like it. I asked how long I could keep the book because I was in the middle of several rather lengthy bestsellers and would not be able to get to it anytime soon. Friday night, out of mild curiosity, I read the first page and before I knew it, I had lost two good night's sleep. My wife finally told me that I had to put the book down.
Reading the first page is akin to eating one potato chip or one peanut; don't start if you have other plans for the next several days. This is truly an incredible book, well-researched, unpredictable and with a slate of characters so bizarre, you can't believe this really happened. It did, though.
Albert Patterson was a small town lawyer in the 1950's in Phenix City, Alabama, the "Wickedest city in America". The major industry in Phenix City in the first half of the 20th century was the peddling of sin. Prostitution, gambling and almost every other vice were not only available on every corner, but most everyone in the city government and law enforcement were not only supportive of the system, but were actively participating in it. This is the story of a few good men who decided to stand up to the mob and what it ultimately cost them.
Buy this book. I promise you won't be disappointed.

I was one lucky son of a gun to have been given a chance to be part of this new age of opening up the Boles and Joseph country to logging. I got to see and to be a part of the beginning of a new industry across the Salmon River, according to the author.
But much of those logging and lumbering days are over as Clem Nuxoll had lived them. Rather than let those times escape into eternity, this woodsman captures many of those days, both the happy and sad ones, about his family and friends, in his book "Laughter and Tears Through My Logging Years."
Besides the jokes and adventures in genuine logger style, there are 15 poems and 75 photographs that add to this rough-n-tough man's story. Not only does he entertain with personal tender touches, but the author describes in detail and with experience how loggers managed to get their job done without any chainsawsa history lesson in itself. With the arrival of the chainsaw, however, there were lots of adjustments to be made and changes to follow.
The author recalls one particular incident with the lumberjack's new tool:
The saw hit me on the head, knocking off my hard hat. Boy, did the blood fly! I walked up to the landing and scared the hell out of everyone because of the blood running down my face. Rupe took me into the hospital where they put in four long stitches without any pain medicine. Dr. Rockwell said, `I heard loggers are tough. We are going to find out now.'
When you read this logger's book, you will also find out how really tough and loving are the people in Delbert (Clem) Nuxoll's life.

Lots of Laughter and Tears.......2002-02-07
Read a little, laugh a little, cry a little, love it a lot.
Its a true story told about the hard life of a logger through the olden days of logging to the present day. I liked the poems and unusual and laughable characters he tells us about.
Can't wait until his next book comes out-Laughter and Fears Though my Boyhood Years.
HE TELLS YOU HOW IT REALLY WAS.......2001-11-09

Book Description
President Bill Clinton’s My Life is the strikingly candid portrait of a global leader who decided early in life to devote his intellectual and political gifts, and his extraordinary capacity for hard work, to serving the public.
It shows us the progress of a remarkable American, who, through his own enormous energies and efforts, made the unlikely journey from Hope, Arkansas, to the White House—a journey fueled by an impassioned interest in the political process which manifested itself at every stage of his life: in college, working as an intern for Senator William Fulbright; at Oxford, becoming part of the Vietnam War protest movement; at Yale Law School, campaigning on the grassroots level for Democratic candidates; back in Arkansas, running for Congress, attorney general, and governor.
We see his career shaped by his resolute determination to improve the life of his fellow citizens, an unfaltering commitment to civil rights, and an exceptional understanding of the practicalities of political life.
We come to understand the emotional pressures of his youth—born after his father’s death; caught in the dysfunctional relationship between his feisty, nurturing mother and his abusive stepfather, whom he never ceased to love and whose name he took; drawn to the brilliant, compelling Hillary Rodham, whom he was determined to marry; passionately devoted, from her infancy, to their daughter, Chelsea, and to the entire experience of fatherhood; slowly and painfully beginning to comprehend how his early denial of pain led him at times into damaging patterns of behavior.
President Clinton’s book is also the fullest, most concretely detailed, most nuanced account of a presidency ever written—encompassing not only the high points and crises but the way the presidency actually works: the day-to-day bombardment of problems, personalities, conflicts, setbacks, achievements.
It is a testament to the positive impact on America and on the world of his work and his ideals.
It is the gripping account of a president under concerted and unrelenting assault orchestrated by his enemies on the Far Right, and how he survived and prevailed.
It is a treasury of moments caught alive, among them:
• The ten-year-old boy watching the national political conventions on his family’s new (and first) television set.
• The young candidate looking for votes in the Arkansas hills and the local seer who tells him, “Anybody who would campaign at a beer joint in Joiner at midnight on Saturday night deserves to carry one box. . . . You’ll win here. But it’ll be the only damn place you win in this county.” (He was right on both counts.)
• The roller-coaster ride of the 1992 campaign.
• The extraordinarily frank exchanges with Newt Gingrich and Bob Dole.
• The delicate manipulation needed to convince Rabin and Arafat to shake hands for the camera while keeping Arafat from kissing Rabin.
• The cost, both public and private, of the scandal that threatened the presidency.
Here is the life of a great national and international figure, revealed with all his talents and contradictions, told openly, directly, in his own completely recognizable voice. A unique book by a unique American.
From the Hardcover edition.

Review by Nan Kilar and Bob Miller.......2007-01-18
A homecoming of sorts, as much for Clinton as his readers---it's a weaving together of philosophy, religion, sex, and a deep love of country. Book was not what I expected, but in a word it was, compelling. Mr. Clinton explains the stress in those years in a manner that leaves the Clinton gang, I'm sure, wanting less compassion for those who tried their best to destroy him and his family. That's the difference between a politician, any politician, and a human being.
I too felt stress in those years. It was impossible to find employees--everyone who wanted a job had one. Even more stressful was what to do with the huge surplus of money in our national treasury. Then there was that fulltime worry about Bill's sex life. That wouldn't have been an issue for me had I had a sex life. Then there was all that training and money we were spending on our armed forces who were not out there earning their keep invading oil rich countries so the likes of Exxon-Mobil and Halliburton could exploit their natural resources.
Life has been worry free for me during the Bush years. It's the minorities and middle income whites who are doing the worrying now--about things like where to bury their war dead, employment and paying the bills. I confess, I'm not sure how these people are going to handle the national debt with me getting a tax cut and them without a job. But Mr. Bush said not to worry. What a relief! I'm Bob Miller, a registered Republican.
I would have liked to see him actually comment on the issues instead of list them.......2006-12-17
As someone who has written a lot about Bill Clinton over the years I was disappointed by his book. This was a chance for him to set the record straight on both the good and bad in his administration and he did neither. He talks about a lot of the issues but not how he approached them. He talks about what his administration looked at but not what he did and did not solve. He allows Yassir Arafat to get off completely free for his rejection of the Clinton plan the book is very well written and is still worth reading if nothing else to understand Clinton's perspective on what happened but overall it could have been far more enlightening.
A great book from a great president.......2005-07-28
As a Clinton Democrat, I grew up with issues like Social Security and welfare in my mind. I found out more about Clinton from this book then watching him for the last 14 years on TV. Clinton uses easy to understand words yet at some points he uses more complicated rhetoric. A fun book to read and will test what you know about Clinton's term in office.

Book Description
Welcome a biography of oppression told through the eyes of a lesbian...a "HOMO-cide" survivor. I could easily relay some heart wrenching narrative about what you'll find here, but that's not only typical...it's not my style. I will, however, tell you this...I am honest, observant, and passionate about the subject of oppression and the desperate need for change.
I will ask you to remember that yesterday I may have been born the happy infant loved by all, and today I may be the adult lesbian that society gets to meet and discuss. But one day, not long ago...I too was a child...a child of oppression. And that child was damned to exist in a dark realm...the closet, if you will. She was murdered by society before she could even tie her shoes. It is that child that I have journeyed to discover...that gay and forsaken child no one ever knew.
By recognizing the cycle of oppression and breaking it...we will find the children...the key to equality...and we will set them free. We have to try...if we don't, then we've agreed to let them die. It's time to wash the blood of the children from our hands...America.
