The book is confusing, does not outline the important topics and only three out of 16 or so chapters are on substantive testing.

            Book Description

This book is an original contribution to the increasing body of knowledge about gender and organizations. It investigates and theorizes gender and culture, and gender relations and gender-based inequality in organizations: how sexual and social relations between women and men, relations based on sexuality, and relations of power and control based on sex, determine the cultures, structures and practices of organizations and the experience of women and men in organizations. The book is unusual in its focus on organizational culture and organizational change (in putting theory into practice to bring about change in organizations and in using practice to inform and develop theory) and its concern with strategy (the use of theory to develop strategy to shape and direct practice, and in turn the use of practice to "craft strategy" and to construct theory). The book collects together a decade of experience of managing change and "operationalizing theory" in public sector organizations in Britain during a period of major social, political and economic transitions, and analyzes what has been learned. It also makes wider connections with women and trade unions in Europe and management development for women in the "developing countries" of Africa and Asia.

5 out of 5 stars Very Practical Book.......2007-05-17

I feel that it is a very practical book for young engineers who are already working for spacecrafts.

4 out of 5 stars A great book on Spacecraft Structures.......2007-01-23

This book's greatest strength was its organization and presentation of information regarding spacecraft structures. As the subtitle says "from Concept to Launch". Information is presented first in the conceptual manner to gain the basic understanding of what goes into the design of a structure. He then follows this conceptual information with more detailed explanations of the behaviors and effects that specific components or types of structures exhibit which include the effects these provide to other spacecraft subsystems through the launch phase and while in space.

His use of equations in describing the topics within the book is very to the point and he also includes plenty of figures and diagrams to help to concisely illustrate the topics at hand. In short he educates the reader to new topics very efficiently while not drowning in the details. For readers who want to delve into a subject more completely he presents references at the end of each chapter.

The book's weak point is its treatment on mechanisms. Regarding mechanisms his treatment is more of a broad overview which is rather unfortunate. In the development of reliable spaceflight mechanisms the devil really is in the details. For anyone who wants a good reference for spaceflight mechanisms I recommend the book "Space Vehicle Mechanisms: Elements of Successful Design" or try to gather information from the proceedings of the Aerospace Mechanisms Symposium.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive information on developing space structures.......2002-12-22

Sarafin has complied a wealth of useful information on the entire spacecraft structural design lifecycle. The information presented is both detailed, and well backed up by comprehensive references. The book also includes a very good overview of how structural design fits into the larger context of a spacecraft development program. A good book for both practicing structural engineers looking for an introduction to spacecraft structural issues, and systems engineers looking for a better understanding of the issues involved in designing and developing spacecraft structures.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent text book!.......2002-01-26

This book is a must for anyone involved with spacecraft
structures and mechanisms engineering. Well written, with plenty of practical, real world spacecraft information, and a good amount of theoretical/analysis info. I think this is the only book of its kind. Written by real experts in the field, who obviously know what they are doing! Explains design, analysis, testing , and even nails down such things acceptance and qualification testing philosophies. The book is biased towards the structures side as this constitutes 3/4 of the text. Congratulations to all who contributed to this classical book!

5 out of 5 stars Chapter 16: Modeling of Structures.......1997-09-06

Chapter 16 is amazing. James D. Christensen is amazing. He must be a genius. It is the best chapter of the book. Everything in this chapter is presented clearly and concisely. Overall the book is very useful, but Chapter 16 stands head and shoulders above the rest

A compilation of Washington, DC, attorney Jacob Stein's essays about lawyers, judges, clients, literature, and popular culture. The essays in this volume have previously appeared in Washington Lawyer, American Scholar, the Times Literary Supplement, and Wilson Quarterly.

                    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "stories that connect lawyers to their ups, downs, fears...".......2004-12-10

"Writing in the first person and sounding very much the after-dinner raconteur, Stein tells stories that connect lawyers to their ups, downs, fears, quirks, ironies, history, and even such unlikely subjects as the French Impressionists. What is so refreshing is that, unlike other big-name lawyers in Stein's elevated loft, he is ever the self-effacing narrator and eschews any mention of his own courtroom triumphs. ... What makes this collection so fascinating is that it is not limited to lawyers, judges and courtrooms. Indeed, Stein treats us to a delightful series of essays about such figures as Bing Crosby, Peter Arno, Franz Kafka, George M. Cohan, Somerset Maugham, Winston Churchill, and Ernest Hemingway."

                    -- Peter D. Baird, Litigation, Fall 2004

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful compilation of essays by Jacob Stein.......2004-07-09

I've been reading Jacob Stein's essays for many years in the Washington Lawyer. He has put many of his favorites in this very enjoyable book (you can also see many of his essays on the web).

Not all of the essays are about lawyers directly, but most relate to Washington, DC and all are based on his experiences, ranging from literature, through "An Evening with Louis Armstrong" to popular culture.

This is a great gift for anyone who loves the law, Washington, or good writing by a Washington raconteur.

                    Book Description

Few American politicians have enjoyed greater popularity than Ronald Reagan. Humor, charm, good looks, an intuitive feel for national concerns, and an extraordinary ability to speak persuasively to millions of people were major assets. But his fundamental appeal went deeper: a blend of Catholic and Protestant, small-town boy and famous entertainer, Horatio Alger and P. T. Barnum, traditional moralist and media celebrity, Reagan spoke for old values in current accents.

Robert Dallek presents a sharply drawn, richly detailed portrait of the man and his politics--from his childhood years through the California governorship to the first years of the presidency. It is an essential guide for all observers of the presidential election of 2000, and a starting point for anyone wanting to discover what the Reagan experience really meant.

3 out of 5 stars The rocommendation to the Japanese.......2004-01-19

This book is good, but a little difficult for me.

Before I had read this book, I hadn't understood Ronald Reagan's regency much. I can understand why he is still popular among not only American but also people all over the world. I am assured that he is one of American heroes. He is sincere, hearty, humorous, and powerful.

He faced a tangle of economic problems. The inflation, interest rates, and the projected federal deficit stood at nearly record highs, and unemployment was 7.4 percent. In this situation, he said, 'government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem.' How great that was! He worked out a plan for economic recovery and promised lower taxes, business expansion, more jobs, less inflation, lower interest rates, smaller deficits, and greater military strength. He stuck to the plan and succeeded!

Now Japan has a big economic problems. The national debt become grower, unemployment is higher.. Most of Japanese can't see Japan's future and their one. Reagan worked out the plan and kept to it not for government's benefit but for the national concerns. He certainly executed what he had said. I want Japanese government to follow his example.

I appreciate this work. I will recommend Japanese to read this.

Robert Dallek is an excellent historian, as seen in his work on FDR's foreign policy and his masterful accounts of LBJ. This book was an attempt to gauge Reagan's presidency in the midst of it. It has some wonderful insight on Reagan's use (and abuse) of political symbolism, but it needs to be updated with more than a new preface to stay fresh.

2 out of 5 stars Mediocre, with factual errors.......1999-09-04

The careful reader will recognize enough factual errors in this book to be made uncomfortable with its scholarship and research.

                    5 out of 5 stars A great summary of Reagan's 1980's legacy.......1999-04-05

Robert Dallek, one of my favorite historians, here paints a picture of Reagan in his first four years in office which sees the former actor and Governor as an ideologue who, ironically, uses symbolism over substance to form his coalition.

Dallek's book makes great points about Reagan's legacy, even though it was written just four years into his Presidency. He points out the horrible legacy of the national debt, which grew by about $3 trillion during Reagan's watch. He points to the coming redistribution of wealth towadrs the wealthy and away from the middle and working class and poor. Statistics have shown that from 1979 to 1993 the top 20% saw 97% of the real increase in wealth, thus proving Dallek's beliefs. Dallek shows Reaganomics to be an anti-working class and anti-social and moral justice crusade dedicated to the old Republican views of Hoover and a slap in the face to dwindling moderation in the party, as portrayed by the great moderate Gerald Ford. Dallek shows Reagan to be an ideologue on foreign policy, whose 'zeal' for eliminatiing so-called 'waste' on programs for the poor does not translate into a zeal to eliminate true waste which affects the pockets of the wealthy arms dealers. Dallek shows Reagan's views to be uncaring and regressive and ultimately harmful to the progress of the past.

This is, to say the least, a great book. It began to show the injustice of Reaganomics, which saw the top income tax rate on the wealthy fall from 70% to 28% and payroll taxes on working individuals increase 7 separate times. Reagan ignored great issues - such as medical insurance reform, civil rights, urban issues, the environment, education and progressive social policies - and concentrated on tax reductions for the wealthy, a false foreign policy which portrayed a hollow Soviet empire as a true warrior and a regressive nature in regards to civil rights and economics. He also began a great scam, the forging of the modern religious right. Reagan, whose religious views were inactive at best, portrayed himself as a true fundamentalist in order to win over angry white fundamentalists, who were upset with scores in civil rights, women's rights and public activism. He won over millions of working class whites by telling them he was on 'their side' and not 'the other folks' side,' that is, on the side of the minorities. Yet, while he did this, he became the poster boy for the Chamber of Commerce - what a scam! To add insult to injury, he defeated in 1980 Democrat Jimmy Carter, a truly devoted evangelical Christian. Once again, what a scam!

As a true fan of real history, I appreciate this work. Republican ideologues today falsely paint Reagan as a great President, when in fact he was mediocre at best.

Dallek is one of the best out there. His books on LBJ and FDR are great, as is his work on the Presidents. For those who enjoyed his past work, I would highly recommend this one! This one comes with a great recommendation by the great historian James Mcgregor Burns.

Mr. Middleton is in a much darker period of his writing and life at the time of his writing this book and though he still writes well, the tone takes on a darker shade than The Earth is Enough or On the Spine of Time which are cherished pieces in my collection.

                    5 out of 5 stars Small World.......2001-06-26

THE BRIGHT COUNTRY is a heartbreakingly beautiful, sad, hilarious, touching book that flows and burbles along like a favorite trout stream. I've probably bought 6-8 copies of the book over the years and loaned, given or otherwise forced it upon at least twice that number of people. It's not a perfect novel, but is easily the most honest look I've ever encountered into the heart of a guy I wish I'd had the opportunity to know. There's more than a little bit of trout fishing, but this is a book that hooks non-anglers as well.

                    5 out of 5 stars A Bright Ending.......2001-04-24

I can't write Harry Middleton to tell him how much I admire his writing, or how much his stories and themes resonate in me. He died not long ago. And if I may quote Russell Chatham, "It hurts to know that Harry Middleton rode the back of a garbage truck every night during the wee hours to put groceries on his family's table." It's true. It's part of this story.

This is the moving, affecting story of Middleton's struggle with depression, his mother's death of brain cancer, and, most memorably, a blind trout on the South Fork of the Platte River. Like all of Middleton's books, the language is wonderful and the characters are memorable. Perhaps more so than most, this book is Middleton laying his soul bare, telling a story as it happened, cutting close to the bone.

And if flyfishing isn't the whole story here, it is part of the path to redemption.

Harry, we hardly knew you, and I wish there had been more time, and more books. But you will live on for me and for those readers who discover you. Ollie ollie oxen free.

For serious students of the Russian revolution, or simply those - like myself - who are fascinated by the turn of events during this momentous period of history, Abraham's book is a fascinating and revealing account of one of the periods most important players in the revolution. Kerensky, who has often been derided by both extemities of the political spectrum ( the Bolsheviks and the Monarchists/Rightists) was in fact a committed Social Democrat, with a heavy leaning toward the latter political description. Abraham, throughout his book, tries to build up a picture of the man - with his inherent egotism - and the political revolutionary, and how the conflict between the man and his political ideals often lead to the false assumption that he was powerless and vaccilating. Whilst Lenin and his fellow emigre' Bolsheviks came in on the coat tails of the hard work done during the first - and perhaps most hopeful of the 1917 revolutions (February) - Kerensky and other hopeful Democrats were trying to build a future Russia where the kind of oppression suffered under the Tsarist, and then later Boshevik regimes, could have been avoided. Whilst Kerensky was undoubtedly no angel and did contribute to the eventual downfall of the Provisional government, Abraham, paints a picture of man that you can't help thinking may have helped in providing a more hopeful future for his people. Just think, none of the horrors of Lenin and Stalin!

Abraham's book is a bit wordy and caught up in blow by blow descriptions of back room discussions and negotiations of the period. He does provide a revealing portrait of Alexander Kerensky and his troubled government in the turbulent times of war and revolution. Worth reading for serious students of Russian history. A Contribution to the history of the Revolution that changed the world.

In the absence of a definitive biography of Christopher Isherwood, this rich resource of personal reminiscence and considered critical reflection is the next best thing. It may even become one of the essential books for students of English literature and culture in the 20th century, as well as for those drawn to the rowdy and fertile expatriate communities around Hollywood during and after World War II. Concentrating on Isherwood's life in Southern California, where he settled in 1939, here are essays by younger friends and students, among them the photographer Stathis Orphanos and the writers Carolyn Heilbrun and James P. White; an interview with Isherwood's companion, the artist Don Bachardy; and excerpts from his dairies. Critical essays from Edmund White and others range from discussions of the "long road of understanding" that Isherwood began with Prater Violet (1945) and his explorations of Vedanta to his collaborations with his friend W.H. Auden and the drawings Bachardy made of Isherwood as he lay dying in the winter of 1985-86. The contributions to this book are thoughtful, somewhat modest, and unfailingly entertaining. It is a fitting homage to a writer who devoted many years to trying to curb his ego, the better to see reality behind appearances and the better to write it down. --Regina Marler

"The Isherwood Century". What a great choice of title for this invaluable (and well edited) collections of essays, interviews, ruminations on the life and influence of Christopher Isherwood. While his is a household name, primarily beacuse of the worldwide success and endurance of "Cabaret" the musical based on his Berlin Stories (I am a Camera, Goodbye to Berlin, etc), this informed and endlessly interesting survey provides a fine documentation for Isherwood's position of importance on 20th Century literature, his positive role model for gay writers and all gay people who care about significant relationships, his courage as an early pacifist, his impact on those students fortunate enough to have studied in his unique classes. Reading first hand encounters from such a broad spectrum of friends and reporters always give a more fine tuned view than a straight out biography. And for a man whose literary skills polished the concept of autobigraphy that is matched by few others, this is quite an achievement.

Reading "The Isherwood Century" is discovering an involved panorama of life in the past century - politically, artistically, internationally, psychologically, and spiritually. More than a memoir, this book remains intimate despite its scope. At last we have a reference (outside of his own wondrous diaries) that validates the greatness of this significant human being.

5 out of 5 stars A "must" for all students and fans of Isherwood's writings........2000-08-03

The Isherwood Century is an impressive collection of essays and interviews on the life and work of Christopher Isherwood, including a fresh, in-depth view of his literary legacy and continuing influence. Included are Katherine Bucknell (Who is Christopher Isherwood?); Dan Luckenbill (Isherwood in Los Angeles); Stathis Orphanos (In the Blink of an Eye: Evolving with Christopher Isherwood); Michael S. Harper (Ish circa 1959-1963); Michael S. Harper (Reading from Isherwood's Letter circa 1959-1963); Robert Peters (Gay Isherwood Visits Straight Riverside); Carolyn G. Heilbrun (My Isherwood, My Bachardy); James P. White (Write It Down or It's Lost: Isherwood as Mentor), and sixteen other informative and insightful contributors. The Isherwood Century is a "must" for all students and fans of Isherwood's accomplishments and thoughts.

5 out of 5 stars An intimate and illuminating portrait of the man and artist.......2000-05-06

As a long-time reader of Isherwood's novels, autobiographies and diaries, I thought I knew everything there was to know about him. I was wrong, and I'm happy to say that I learned a great deal about the intimate Isherwood (as opposed to the person he chose to reveal in his work) from this collection. The informal Isherwood is here in memoirs and reminiscences, first and foremost by his partner Don Bachardy. As you would expect, Bachardy's portrait of Isherwood is precise, detailed, affectionate and harrowing (his series of drawings of Isherwood's last days are included), but the memories of former students of Isherwood as teacher, mentor and friend are equally revealing. The professional Isherwood appears in previously unpublished interviews and memoirs by such colleagues as Carolyn Heilbrun, whose piece about her few intersections with Isherwood as a literary subject takes an interesting turn into recalling his profound kindness to her in a time of spiritual crisis. And the lively and accessible essays by literary scholars served first to remind me of what an original and vivid writer Isherwood was and second to send me back to the novels that so inspired me when I first encountered them. Isherwood achieved thrilling literary effects by combining witheringly accurate observation of his characters with a sensual evocation of time and place as if by magic. It seems only fitting that when the many writers here take very different beads on this complex man and artist what emerges from the collage of viewpoints is a surprisingly emotional and coherent portrait of the man himself.
