Considering Sales? "Know Thyself" and the Intricacies of Sales. .......2007-01-29
Author Ted Newill has worked for me twice over the span of 27 years so I have a definite bias in writing this review.
Ted was a Territory Manager, field sales rep, when I became President of American Hospital Supply's (AHSC)Heyer-Schulte Division. He eventually became the company's (under the Mentor, Inc. name) National Sales Director and Vice-President, Sales. Well after I left AHSC, I lured him away to become my Vice-President, Marketing and Sales, for KeraVision, Inc.
Ted was an outstanding sales representative and sales executive. He built a great sales organization while at Mentor and was an excellent developer of sales people and sales executives. He also, despite the numerous obstacles a start-up faces, did the same while at KeraVision.
His book, "Sales Careers," reflects his insight, wisdom, and experience in "the field" and managing those who are "in the field." This is not an academic work but a real "how-to" book. It will be extremely useful for those seeking sales positions, regardless of industry.
Ted has organized "Sales Careers" around:
1. Defining Sales
2. What's Great and What's Tough About a Sales Job
3. A Week in the Life of a Sales Professional
4. What Does a Sales Job Pay?
5. The Art and Science of Sales: Understanding and Assessing Your Fit(ness) for the Field
6. Why Women Rule in Sales
7. Strategies for Breaking Into Sales
8. Sales Career Paths
9. Resources for Your Sales Job Search and Career.
One of the most important aspects of this book is the introspective analysis of what it takes to make it in sales (Chapters 2 & 5). I have met many people who "feel" they can sell, jump into a sales position, and then, experience catastrophic failure. "Know Thy Self" is as important to sales as it is for any other aspect of life.
"Sales Careers" is useful in probing the potential "fit" for anyone wanting to investigate their potential in sales.
Great Guide for getting a Sales job.......2004-06-18
Experienced or new to Sales this is a great guide for you. The chapters cover everything in a clear and consise manner. This book helped me to 'revive' my resume and include skills or achievements I had either not included or not worded in the most impactful way to get hired! There is a good overview of all possible sales jobs from an avon representative to selling high end capital equipment. For less than $20.00 this is the only book you need to land a great job.
The previous reviews are sketchy........2004-04-07
I bought this book at a retail outlet and then decided to check the amazon.com website reviews and price. There are only three previous reviews for the book. The reviews all originate in Florida. The reviews all use similar BOLD text to emphasize key selling points for the book. The reviews all have similar cut-n-paste type errors. The reviews all have 5 stars.
I often wonder about the legitimacy of reviews. I find it hard to believe that the previous reviews didn't have the same point of origination.
The book itself may be just the type of companion book needed in your job hunt arsenal, easy to read and apply.

An "A" book for an "A" sales person.......2003-08-27
I am the owner of a recruiting firm and place a lot of "A" talent in medical device and consumer firms. Our firm tries to read all of the latest books and recommend them to our candidates. The book "Sales Careers the Ultimate Guide to Getting a High-Paying Sales Job" is a MUST READ for any serious
candidate wanting to break into the next level of sales. Mr. Newill has done a superb job of guiding the serious candidate into analyzing their skills to maximize their success. Additionally, he answers all of the questions that people have on salary, commissions, and the best compensation
programs. I hope that Mr. Newill writes a book on how to get ahead in management to supplement this fantastic "must read".

Book Description
Group Theory is an indispensable mathematical tool in many branches of physics and chemistry. Providing a detailed account of Group Theory and its applications to chemical physics, the first half of this book focuses on elementary topics, such as molecular and crystal symmetry. The latter, more advanced portion includes proven examples. The book's comprehensive coverage makes it suitable for a two-semester course at the advanced undergraduate and graduate levels.
Download Description
Group Theory is an indispensable mathematical tool in many branches of chemistry and physics. This book provides a self-contained and rigorous account on the fundamentals and applications of the subject to chemical physics, assuming no prior knowledge of group theory. The first half of the book focuses on elementary topics, such as molecular and crystal symmetry, whilst the latter half is more advanced in nature. Discussions on more complex material such as space groups, projective representations, magnetic crystals and spinor bases, often omitted from introductory texts, is expertly dealt with. With the inclusion of numerous exercises and worked examples, this book will appeal to advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students studying physical sciences and is an ideal text for use on a two-semester course.

"Musil belongs in the company of Joyce, Proust, Kafka, and Svevo. . . . (This translation) is a literay and intellectual event of singular importance."--New Republic.
Customer Reviews:
Nothing less than five stars!.......2005-07-08
The last reviewer obviously does NOT appreciate Musil in any true sense. There are no "unnecessarily longwinded, only somewhat interesting, conversations" --the reader who thinks this way has definitely ignored Musil's central concept of "Essayismus," which is essential to any understanding of the book. With this "essayism" Musil strove to find the perfect balance between the antipodes of life--art and science (clearly evident in the book's style), precision and soul, intuition and logic. It is the path to Utopia.
Musil's "anti-Semitism": The last reviewer points this out as a factor which might put off some readers. This is comparable to putting an emphasis on Dostoevsky's alleged anti-Semitism--you end up missing the whole point. By the way, Musil's wife Martha was Jewish. After Hitler's rise to power, the Musils, like many other intellectuals, fled to Switzerland. I don't know where one finds any anti-Semitism in Musil.
This book is highly rewarding when given the time. Don't be turned off by the length. It is much easier to read than Joyce and Proust and can actually be a real page-turner. Anyone who gives it less than five stars is just not getting it.
"the man without qualities" has some qualities.......2002-01-31
this 1800 page book has been placed in the same league as "the remembrance of things past" and joyce's "ulysses". if one is not put off by musil's antisemitism, and unnecessarily longwinded, only somewhat interesting, conversations, one is more than rewarded by musil's keen obervational skills and ability to portray highly ideosyncratic, pathological, psychological states. musil is a genius at capturing the subtleties of sexual relations and their consequences. in my opinion, musil lacks the basic humanity of both proust and joyce; the book would be vastly improved if a good editor eliminated a good deal of the tiresome discussions.

The standard by which all books on presidential power are judged is Richard E. Neustadt's Presidential Power, which considers modern presidents in terms of their ability to wield influence. In Presidential Ambition, Richard Shenkman takes a more historical--and much more cynical--look at the question of how a president uses and consolidates power. In addition to the compromising of principles, lying, pandering, stealing votes, manipulation of the press, and attempts to manipulate public opinion that take place in the Oval Office, Shenkman also delves into the nefarious methods by which these men became America's leaders.
He maintains that the primary quality that separates the presidents from other Americans, from George Washington onward, is their overwhelming ambition. The most successful occupants of the White House, he suggests, expanded the powers of their position by molding the presidency to their own talents and skills, finding ways to do what they wanted--including lying to the American people (a trait, he makes abundantly clear, that is far from limited to the Clinton administration). Shenkman's conclusions about the presidency and the United States are bleak. He argues that the behavior of American presidents has gotten worse as the world has grown more complex: "If you looked carefully at American history you could see a clear pattern of decline. Instead of things getting better and better over time, as Americans liked to fantasize, they had gotten worse and worse.... The system over time had become more and more politically promiscuous, ever more tolerant of a wider and wider range of unseemly presidential behavior." --Linda Killian
Book Description
In this timely, illuminating, and often shocking book, Richard Shenkman reveals that it is not just recent presidents but all presidents who have been ambitious--and at times frighteningly so, willing to sacrifice their health, family, loyalty, and values. Presidential Ambition is a book that will permanently alter the way we think about past, present, and future American presidents.

The Authors Bait and Switch.......2004-03-14
I am conflicted on this book review. My first response would be that I was disappointed with the book. The title and dust jacket lead me to believe that the author was going to cover story after story of mean, nasty, back stabbing methods past Presidents had employed to get their way. Real tricky Dick Nixon type of stuff that makes people who are skeptical of politicians stand up and cry out "look at those scum!". What I got was a chapter length review of some of the past Presidents from Washington to Ike. Sure it was easy to read, but it did not have enough detail to really get into the topic. The author presented his book in a very nice and calm manner. My opinion is that with a book covering this subject, the author needs to be frank, direct and maybe have a little chip on his shoulder to get the right level of distain in his writing.
This author had not one disagreeable thing to say in the whole book. I got to the mid point and started to think that this author would be hard pressed to speak of criminals in a harsh tone. On the other hand the author did have a very easy to read and almost conversational way of writing. The pages flowed along and before I knew it I had completed the book. Did I learn a lot from the book, well some, but again not what I wanted. I wanted to sit and gawk at a train wreck and this author presented a view to a tea party. He was just so darn nice that I feel some obligation to give him a high mark on the rating.
A fascinating look into presidential power.......2000-07-30
This book offers a fascinating insight into the lives of some of the men who have held the office of President. The author maintains that as times have gotten more complex, presidents are pressured to break the rules, lie and lend themselves to scandal to maintain political power. Shenkman poses and interesting question when he asks if the system is flawed or the individuals. He fairly concludes that both are flawed and proceeds to give example after example of how different presidents manipulated situations and circumstances to achieve and maintain their presidential ambitions.
The thing that I liked best about this book is that it spotlights some obscure presidents that you rarely hear about such as James K. Polk, James Buchanan and Chester A. Arthur. I particularly found the chapter on Franklin Pierce very interesting. He had high presidential ambitions but at the same time, he had to keep his ambitions a secret from his wife because she did not want him involved in politics.
The book does an excellent job of covering presidential amibitions up until the Eisenhower administration. After this, the author gives an abbreviated view of the Cold War, Vietnam and Watergate. I found this to be strange because it would seem that this period of American history would provide the most blatant examples fo men manipulating events and circumstances to maintain power and shape policy. In anycase, this was the only shortcoming that I didn't like but overall it is a very good easy to read book that is well worth your time.
A timely and original work.......2000-06-08
In his book, Shenkman does an excellent job of ferreting out and explaining presidential ambition. While it may seem that Shenkman is concentrating on the negative, he is vigorously fair, and his ability to empathize with his subjects is his greatest asset. His central themes are:
1.Our presidents have been (from Washington onward) insatiably ambitious men who have done not-so-nice things to get and maintain power;
2.Their ambition and willingness to bend the rules often provided the leadership needed to steer the country through difficult times; and
3.Changes in the media, immigration, political parties, and technology forced presidents to take extreme measures to get and keep power.
What makes his book even more interesting is that he uses evidence from the historical record of presidents *before* Truman. And Shenkman spends a lot of time discussing presidents that most people know nothing about: Cleveland, Hayes, Buchanan, Polk (and his chapters on Buchanan and Polk are the best of the lot). This alone makes the book worth reading: I can't wait to suggest it to my blowhard uncle who claims Clinton was the first president besides Nixon to lie in office.
So why 3 stars, given that I am so enthusiastic about the content and the rigor of Shenkman's work? His writing has been called "breezy" and "journalistic". And his prose is both of those things, but there are times in this book that Shenkman gets in his own way with his self-conscious prose. He overuses two devices that should never, ever be overused in prose--sentence fragments and slang. The first time he used the word "caved" to describe a presidential capitulation, it was refreshing, but by the fourth I was tired of it. More annoying was his continued use of sentence fragments. Some of his points flourished with the punchy use of such informal prose; but in other cases, the device felt to me like an affection-an affection unworthy of someone like Shenkman whose prose in other places was indeed breezy and graceful.
That said, these problems are not serious enough to diminish the maturity of Shenkman's commentary. I think it is an excellent book for people (of any age) interested in the presidency. Some readers may be put off by Shenkman's moral relativism, and I guarantee the book would make for a lively discussion for a book group.
Elementary.......2000-05-30
Presidential Ambition is an elementary read on the politics of the presidency. It significantly misleads the reader into believing that they are going to read a political/psychological analysis of the presidency, by treating each president individually. Rather we get a historical recap of what events forced the president to act "ambitiously" and "without scruples." Although each time we are reminded that the President did not really want to act in this matter, but the events around him forced him to do so. Shenkman offer little in terms of analysis and my reasons for offering an average review is that while there is little in terms of political analysis or an a look into the presidential psyche (in terms of analyzing personal papers, decisions, etc.); Shenkman offers a very good history on the presidency in an easy to read manner. His anectodes are interesting and purposeful chosen to support his rather simplistic thesis that to be President one must be ambitious, and as the country grew more complex, the more ambitious the president. Ambitious as the sole reason for propelling a President to make any decision sets up an unrelaistic scenario that suggests the President acts unilaterally. It is a historical delight, but as a book of political sciecne, it is underwhelming and a travesty
Interesting and Timely.......2000-02-11
As we get closer to the next Presidential election, Shenkman's book offered me a different way to look at history and think about office of the President. The book gives brief and easy to follow history and enabled me to put past presidents in the context of the events that surrouned their term and really created their drive to the White House. I definitely recommend it.

Eyewitness to history in the making.......2006-08-29
A very interesting ride through two decades or so of turbulent history as seen by a perpetually curious reporter. John Simpson worked hard to discover the competing versions (and visions) of truth and to tell a compact and concise story, both in written and visual media. One suspects that the duality of his media methods reinforced each other.
In chasing the emerging stories, Mr. Simpson tells how he got from apartheid to Northern Ireland, Libya to Tehran, and all over eastern Europe in 1989. In the wake of that amazing year, Mr. Simpson then traveled throughout Eastern Europe see civilizations adjust, come apart, go through wars, and try to rebuild.
From hilarious anecdotes about how to properly pronounce the names of places like Phouc Me, Vietnam, to stories of barely surviving violent crowds, this book is a great read of modern journalism. Mr. Simpson, of course, wants to portray the profession at its most noble, but is more than willing to admit to the blemishes and warts that accompany any human enterprise. His insightful perceptions of the war in northern Ireland, Provos versus IRA versus British Army are very keen (see page 108 "Our idiotic army think this is a war and they can win it by shooting down the enemy. Bloody fools, they're as bad as the Yanks in Vietnam. It's not a war, it's a police action and they're in to for a long haul. We are all.")
In this day where we are all deeply concerned about the future of Iran, Mr. Simpson's chapter on Revolutionaries is to be commended, and is worth deeply reading and re-reading. His understanding of the people, from Ayatollah Khomeni to the Shah, are a mix of history, social anthropology, and simple good writing.
Moving to Asia, Mr. Simpson's tragic chapter on China is a beautiful read on a people, indeed peoples, trying to survive Maoist Communism and move forward in the inevitable march of Chinese history. His account is history in the making, and if you want a clear and concise understanding of how China got from the Cultural Revolution to the modern bustle of Shanghai, this is as good a primer as I have seen.
The lately added chapter on Kosovo is also worth reading for the fin-de-siecle of Balkan hatred and violence that erupted after 1989. No one comes off terribly well in this chapter, but it is good eyewitness reporting with a keen eye to both past history and future implications in this troubled region.
Most memoirs tend to be very self serving, self centered and of only passing interest. This one is a must read in the modern "Industrial Age."
Interesting Read.......2001-02-16
John Simpson seems always to be "where it's at" He has covered a remarkable number of world events in far flung countries. With this book he brings to the reader a greater understanding of both what was going on during those times and what life is like as a BBC correspondent. I highly recommend this book, though I would also recommend having a good dictionary on hand while you are reading it. Some of the accounts Simpson gives also assume a greater amount of background knowledge than the average American is likely to have, especially in the recounting of the Irish issue. However, no matter the depth of your understanding of world affairs, the many interactions Simpson has with vastly different peoples brings forward, sometimes poignantly and other times brutally, that despite a sometimes bewildering chaotic and deadly atmosphere, most people are generous and just trying to go about their lives the best they can.

A relatively good read .......2007-07-26
As a new expactant father, this title caught my eye. I really enjoyed many part of this book. On the other hand, I think the author got a bit too technical when documenting some of his research or discussions he had. He lost me a couple of times while there were other parts that held my interest to the point of not wanting to put to the book done. All in all--- a good effort and a relatively good read!
If you read one book..........2004-10-20
...read this one. Early in my wife's pregnancy, I bought Pregnant Man used for under a dollar; what a deal! It was the most useful and comforting book I read on impending fatherhood, and I have since sent it to several other pregnant (male) friends. Support the author: buy it new!
a keeper.......2001-08-03
Does a great job of relating to what the father is going through. Absolutely hysterical and very real. Had both my husband and I laughing every page. Churchwell's research into the role of the father through history and in many cultures provides insight not found in "what to expect" and the rest of that stack. His display of backbone with overbearing hospital staff during labor and delivery is inspiring without being rude. Our copy is getting well-read!
