4 out of 5 stars a significant Australian contribution to astronomy.......2006-07-05

The Mt Stromlo observatory is a world-class observatory, in which Australia uses its southern hemisphere location to good effect. The book gives a comprehensive history that is quite authoritative. You can see how it had to continually struggle for funding, even though it was a premier Australian institution.

The book describes its observational achievements and the astronomers who made these. These came from all over the world, as astronomy is a particularly international science. It gives you an appreciation of a very productive observatory. Though in part this is aided by there being relatively few major observatories in the southern hemisphere.

While its main facility was destroyed in a bushfire recently, it is being rebuilt and hopes to go on to more discoveries.

            Choice Outstanding Title! (January 2006)

The image of Antarctica as a symbol of the last great wilderness and pristine environment has changed considerably in the last two decades. Environmental problems such as the ozone hole and the break-up of ice-shelves have shown that Antarctica is inextricably linked to global processes and exposed to the impact of human activities in the rest of the world. This volume provides an overview of climate change data, its effects on the structure and functioning of Antarctic ecosystems, and the occurrence and cycling of persistent contaminants. It discusses the unique physico-chemical characteristics of the Antarctic environment, ecophysiological adaptations of terrestrial and marine organisms, the transfer of contaminants in pelagic and neritic food chains and the possible consequences for animals at higher trophic levels. The text concludes with possible future scenarios of climate change and atmospheric contamination and the role of Antarctic organisms in the early detection of environmental perturbations.

              Book Description

This volume is a collection of papers produced within the framework of the Italian National Antarctic Research Programme (PNRA) on the monitoring and control of environmental contamination. The volume represents a contribution of the PNRA to the study of planetary contamination and to the understanding of the processes of global change.
The research focuses on the measurement and analysis of trace elements and organic micropollutants in the following matrices: snow/firn, seawater, soils, sediments, suspended particulate matter, pack ice, atmosphere, and biota.
The results presented extend beyond the development of specific analytical methodologies, to explicitly tackle significant environmental issues concerning global changes. Particularly relevant are the results concerning time changes of CFCs in the troposphere and lead concentration in Antarctic snow in Victoria Land, the presence of organic micropollutants in various Antarctica matrices, and the seasonal evolution of trace elements and

                  Description:
This study examined the concentrations of total hydrocarbons (THC), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), and trace metals (Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, Hg and As) in marine sediments off Scott Base (NZ) and compared them with sediments near the highly polluted McMurdo Station (US) as well as less impacted sites including Turtle Rock and Cape Evans. The Antarctic mollusc, Laternula elliptica and three common sponge species were also analysed for trace metals. The mean THC concentration in sediments from Scott Base was 3 fold higher than the pristine site, Turtle Rock, but 10 fold lower than samples from McMurdo Station. McMurdo Station sediments also contained the highest concentrations of PAHs, PCBs and the trace metals, Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd and Hg. Copper was significantly higher in bivalves from McMurdo Station than other sites. Trace metal concentrations in sponges were generally consistent within sites but no spatial patterns were apparent.

                      Book Description

The nonlinear Schroedinger (NLS) equation is a fundamental nonlinear partial differential equation (PDE) that arises in many areas and engineering, e.g. in plasma physics, nonlinear waves, and nonlinear optics. It is an example of a completely integrable PDE where phase space structure is known in some detail. In this monograph the authors present detailed and pedagogic proofs of persistence theorems for normally hyperbolic invariant manifolds and their stable and unstable manifolds for classes of perturbations of the NLS equation. The existence and persistence of fibrations of these invariant manifolds is also proved. The authors' techniques are based on an infinite dimensional generalization of the graph transform and can be viewed as an infinite dimensional generalization of Fenichel's results. This book also shows that the authors' techniques are quite general and can be applied to a broad class of infinite dimensional dynamical systems.

I was a friend of David's as this manuscript was in development. I would read it, sometimes making notes in the margin. Because from betweeen 7 and 13 years old, I also lived on a farm I could identify with the "goings on". My own favorite part of the book is about the calf. My dad wouldn't let us have a horse so I secretly went to the barn by myself one afternoon and gave a lot of thought to riding one of the older calves that were feeding there. I remember the plan better than the outcome because it was more glorious. David, congratulations on doing what it took to get your book out there. Carol (Harris) Engelmann

The core of Life on Sunnyside Farm describes the adventures of a young boy who ran his grandmother's farm from the age of 10 to 18. One key to the enjoyment of this book is David's wonderful descriptions of the Ozark scenes. Life on Sunnyside Farm takes the reader back to the rural Ozarks in the 1950s and 1960s. David Motherwell has a well-written book that is a pleasure to read.

"Life on Sunnyside Farm" is an uplifting book that details the life of a young boy (David Motherwell) who at the age of ten was faced with the overwhelming responsiblity of taking care of his 80 year old grandmother and her 60-acre farm. The beauty of the Arkansas Ozark area is magnificently described along with the people who lived there during the 1950's and 1960's. The local people are very pleased that it documents their unique way of life. This book will inspire readers of all ages that the human spirit can persevere and flourish in difficult times. I would highly recommend this book to readers of all ages.

2 out of 5 stars Review of Life on Sunnyside Farm by David Motherwell.......2000-09-29

I found the book to be historically interesting and it started out well enough, but I thought the latter half of the book was disjointed and chapters appeared to be "added on". The book as a whole would have been better if events were put entirely in chronological order.

Having lived in the Ozarks, I found the descriptions to be too generic and borrowed, and would have enjoyed more personal desciptions from the author. The descriptions were too superficial, so I never got the "feel" of the author's surroundings and experiences.

I also questioned some of the factual content of statements made in the book. It's as if the writer did not do enough research on certain topics to have an educated opinion. In other words, the writer jumps to conclusions in his evaluation of people and events without adequate knowledge and background. It appears that he took shortcuts in his research.

                          Book Description

Choosing Adolf Hitler and Winston Churchill, two totally opposite leaders—both in what they stood for and in the way they appeared to lead—award-winning historian Andrew Roberts examines the subtleties of political and military leadership. Drawing intriguing parallels with leaders from other eras, and incisively examining those aspects of leadership that Hitler and Churchill had in common, Roberts arrives at a series of fascinating conclusions. Andrew Roberts is the author of Eminent Churchillians and Salisbury: Victorian Titan, winner of the Wolfson History Prize.

Hitler and Churchill: Secrets of Leadership
This is a wonderfully written book comparing a fine leader who was a good man with a fine leader who was, probably, the twentieth century's most evil man. The message is that fine leadership does not imply goodness or badness. Oddly enough, with this serious theme the book contains some delightful humor.

5 out of 5 stars Truely the secrets of leadership.......2005-09-04

For people out there who enjoy a reading an excellent novel, or know someone who enjoys reading this is a must have, or a wonderful gift. In this novel they compare the differences and at the same time their similarities of leadership between the two men, how they were both very committed to lead their country to victory, and would do anything in their power to do so. "Secrets of Leadership" has points or facts that you would have never known about both Winston Churchill and Adolf Hitler, how Hitler wasn't mean and tough all the time, and at time's actually showed affection ( that's all I have to say on the subject), also they have three very interesting sections of illustrations, and explains how they used the media or the press to inspire and motivate their followers and soldiers. All in all this is a great book for anyone who is interested and even for those who are not into the whole war thing.

                                Book Description

This is a study of one of the leading politicians of Independent Mexico, Jose Maria Tornel y Mendivil, whose loyalty to Santa Anna and whose skills as a writer led him to play a crucial role in enabling the caudillo's repeated rise to power during this period. This first biography of Tornel in English provides a new insight into the political thought of the santanistas and the ways in which Santa Anna was able to return to power time and again in spite of the fact that he was deemed responsible for such major national disasters as the Texas campaign of 1836 and the 1847 defeat against the United States. A close analysis of Tornel's own political evolution, from advocating a radical federalist agenda in the 1820s to defending reactionary dictatorship in the 1850s, illustrates the extent to which the santanistas' policies changed as the hopeful, early 1820s degenerated into the despair of the late 1840s. As the leading ideologue of the santanistas, a study of his politics, paying close attention to the way they evolved in response to the different crises Mexico underwent, highlights, for the first time, the extent to which Santa Anna and his followers upheld a particular political agenda which was essentially populist, militaristic, antipolitics, and nationalistic, and varied depending on the prevailing circumstances and the different historical contexts in which it surfaced. A study of Tornel's activities as Santa Anna's main informer in the capital, his leading propagandist, and as a key player in the orchestration of revolts such as the 1834 Plan of Cuernavaca, serves to show the extent to which Santa Anna's success relied on Tornel's services. Coincidentally or not, without Tornel, Santa Anna was not able to return to power after his fall in 1855.

Knowing that we live in more of a visual than textual culture, Copernicus again takes on painting. Having won a grant from the Iowa Arts Council, Copernicus again created 170 ceramic painted tiles, collectively called Tiles of Paradox on the Wall of Possibilities in Adrian's Garden. Truth is an open system; this is its iconography. Almost all the tiles in the collection are described here by the author/painter. In the exhibition, some of the titles and painter's intent were censored. Here they are not. The book directs you to a website of the tiles so you may look at them as you read the book. Beautiful art with the profundity of Socrates and the innocence of a child.
