This book is excellent, it requires the learner to know the concepts covered to complete the problems at the end of the chapters. The book also give projects to be completed for the different types of businesses not isolating just one type. The book illustrates the same concepts many other books contains but also, contains the student version of the program with the pruchase price. As a step by step process it is a success for several students I currently instruct.

Book Description

SOHO, the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, is a project of international cooperation between ESA and NASA to study the Sun, from its deep core to the outer corona, and the solar wind. To achieve its scientific goals it carries a complement of twelve sophisticated, state-of-the-art instruments. Three helioseismology instruments are expected to provide unique data for the study of the structure and dynamics of the solar interior, from the very deep core to the outermost layers of the convection zone. A set of five complementary remote sensing instruments, consisting of EUV and UV imagers, spectrographs and coronagraphs, will give us our first comprehensive view of the outer solar atmosphere and corona, leading to a better understanding of the enigmatic coronal heating and solar wind acceleration processes. Finally, three experiments will complement the remote sensing observations by making in-situ measurements of the composition and energy of the solar wind and charged energetic particles. This volume contains detailed descriptions of all the twelve instruments on board SOHO. Also included are an overview paper and a description of the SOHO ground system, science operations and data products. The aim of these papers is to make the broader scientific community, and in particular potential guest investigators, aware of the scientific objectives and capabilities of the SOHO payload and to provide a reference document for the various instruments.

A literary achievement and a historical failure.......2007-05-31

Horgan's writing is captivating but his his historical acuity is blunted by his religious zeal (which gets wordy at times) and cannot serve as any sort of corrective to Willa Cather's lavish adulation of Latour/Lamy. Horgan will deal bluntly with Martinez's failings but utterly avoids the sense of homosexuality in the bishop's relationship with his busom buddy Machebeuf. He also does not deal adequately with though he does allude to Lamy's insensitiviy to Hispanic culture, as with the santos.

Inspiring History.......2006-06-04

Growing up in New Mexico in the 60's, 70's and early 80's three things were extremely evident: the historical confluence of the Mexican and native cultures about the place and the layered influence of the Catholic Church on top of it all. Not growing up Catholic, much of this culture was a mystery to me at the time. Now being older, much more mindful of historical influences and a convert to Catholicism, the influence of the Catholic Church in my native state of New Mexico is of great interest to me personally.

Imagine my feeling of good fortune then when I discover a copy of Lamy of Santa Fe by Paul Horgan, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for History in the bargain bin at the college bookstore of my neighboring university. Much better than the implied dust covered status of my find, Horgan wrote brings to life in biographical form the historical life of Bishop Lamy. Lamy was not only the first Bishop of Santa Fe, he was one of the most important, influential, and civilizing figures of late 19th Century western expansion of our country. Adding to his significance is that fact that his presence can still be felt all over historical and modern day New Mexico.

This well written book isn't just for people interested in the historical influence of the Catholic Church; it has something to say to anyone interested in the history of the United States in general and the Southwest in particular. Mr. Horgan did a sympathetic and masterful job of bring this man's life into focus for his readers.

A classic biography on a great man.......2006-02-11

Jean Baptiste Lamy has indeed been fortunate to have two major writers present his life in so strong a light: Willa Cather in DEATH COMES FOR THE ARCHBISHOP, where Lamy is portrayed fictionally in the character of Jean Latour, and in this magnificent biography by Paul Horgan. It was Lamy's tremendous force of character, his inner strength in knowing to his bones what was right and being able to call up the courage to act upon it, that one gets from both Cather and Horgan.

Lamy came to Santa Fe in 1850, having been a missionary and vicar in Ohio till then. Catholicism had stagnated in New Mexico, and Lamy instituted sweeping changes upon his arrival. His main goal was to re-establish the Church as the center of life in the southwest; to do so he needed to get rid of priests who were corrupt and spiritually counter-productive. Two of them, Jose Gallegos and Antonio Martinez, objected strongly to Lamy's ways, and caused much mischief for him. But Lamy, through his bravery, persistence, and authority in what he felt was right, became the spiritual light that illuminated the affairs of the southwest during the second half of the 19th century.

Horgan's account of Lamy is as magisterial as his subject; his admiration and respect for the archbishop resonates in almost every paragraph. It's a wonderful achievement - a delight to read. A most deserving winner of the Pulitzer Prize.

A classic biography from the American West.......2002-03-03

Apart from Paul Horgan fans, probably most people coming to this book will be doing so to learn more about the real life archbishop who inspired Willa Cather's great novel DEATH COMES FOR THE ARCHBISHOP. And just as Cather's novel concerns the friendship and work of two major characters--Archbishop Jean Latour and his vicar Father Joseph Vaillant--so Horgan's biography necessarily tells the story not only of Juan Bautista Lamy but also Joseph Machebeuf.

Horgan's biography succeeds magnificently in two ways. First, for those who will be coming to the book from reading Cather, one will find vastly greater depth and detail than was possible in that novel. So, the book is a boon for Cather fans. Second, even if one has not read Cather, the book tells a magnificent story of a truly heroic man and his closest friend. Their story is also the story of the West as a whole, and Santa Fe in particular.

There are biographies that record the rote facts about an individual, and unfortunately most fall into this category. And the there are biographies that almost manage to bring you into contact and introduce you to someone you have never met. Lamy emerges almost as someone you know, instead of someone you merely know things about.

I heartily recommend this book to anyone interested in either history of the American West or in Willa Cather's great novel. Although I am not myself Roman Catholic, it would probably also be enjoyed by those whose main interest is in Church History. It is a tragedy that this book is not currently in print. With so many much weaker and less interesting biographies available, it is unfortunate that many of the truly excellent ones are not.

A Fullsome Biography of Dedication and Accomplishment.......1998-11-04

If there is proof that religion is cultural Paul Horgan demonstrates it in this work which is more than a single biography, but two. Lamy's initial dilemma, besides getting to his Santa Fe assignment, was to overcome the politics of Mexican Catholicism, and bend its will to his own. It was not the good Church defeating evil so much as it was Lamy's determination to arrange things in their proper order while at the same time creating an infrastructure to benefit his parishioners. His monument is the cathedral at Santa Fe in front of which is a stature to his memory as a man beloved by all. Still, Lamy shows a natural reluctance to relinquish habitual authority after retirement. The Archbishop was a man, after all, but a man with a calling he was determined to fulfill. Incidentally, when a character from one book shows up in another unrelated work (Lamy's eventual successor, in Tucson), 'On the Border With Crook,' it lends co-incident authenticity to both.

an account of a final journey.......2003-03-19

Note: as with other reviews I've written about books authored from very personal experiences, this one should be considered unrated, as I don't assign numbers to such accounts.

The author's initial experience with death was of a double absence: she not only lost her father, but was prevented from seeing him or even speaking about her feelings to her family. If this level of silencing is somewhat unusual, bear in mind that the American phobia of death has motivated a clinical-medical bureaucracy designed to make this most final of departures clean and pretty. (In Southern California we even have Forest Lawn, a kind of Disneyland of Death, where the fast food paradigm has been applied to the managing of passed-on loved ones.) What it does instead is hold the dying at a distance while traumatizing those who survive.

Much of this book was written during the author's caretaking of her father-in-law as he lay ill, sometimes comfortable and sometimes in pain. It is not a book to entertain or philosophize, but to reveal what such an experience can be like: the details to tend, the feelings that surface, the constant struggles against laws written to protect people from getting close to death's unpleasantness. For the author, "standing the watch" was a way to deepen her connections with her patient as well as with her husband and family members. It also allowed her to deal with the unfinished pain around her previous inability to properly mourn her father.

Some among the existential philosophers have insisted that we all die alone. That is often true given the legal and medical and psychological isolation of the dying in our death-fearing culture. But what's so often taken as a normal state of the end of an existence need not be. The man tended by a woman who started life as a war orphan and the son who married her died at home in the presence of loving family members who took the time to see him off.

For him this was a great gift, and for them a reminder to seize the time while refusing to let our pioneer cult of individuality keep us from exploring those healthy interdependencies that make life worth valuing enough to end on a note of dignity.

A Lesson in Dying and Caring for the Dying.......2002-11-15

After reading Rebecca Brown's wonderful and in many ways, groundbreaking STANDING THE WATCH, I couldn't help wishing I had this book during the time my father was dying from Alzheimer's. What a comfort it would have been to read it and follow Rebecca and David Brown's thirteen-day odyssey as they lovingly care for Lincoln, David's father, during the last days of the elder's life.

There are many remarkable things about this book--one of the most obvious is the extraordinary bond between David and his father, and how the son kept his promise to care for him at home. Rebecca's solid support of her husband's decision and her unwavering devotion to her father-in-law is no less than heroic. Both are compassionate people who loved Lincoln enough to respect his wishes to keep him at home in his beloved cabin in the Seattle peninsula until he drew his last breath at age 89.

STANDING THE WATCH is not only a wise book, and a practical lesson in caring for our elderly, especially in our homes--a topic Americans avoid--but so very well written that the reader is eager to follow Rebecca wherever she takes us.

For those of us who are put into the usually overwhelming position of caring for our ill and elderly parents, STANDING THE WATCH is an invaluable book to read for its wisdom, humor, and most of all, for the guidance Rebecca and David Brown offer.

Luminous Humanity at the Nightfall of Life

As I read this moving account, I developed a deep and abiding affection for the gruff and indomitable patriarch, Lincoln Brown, as his son and daughter-in-law eased his bumpy journey into that good night. Every page is infused with a luminous humanity, and ultimately feels very necessary as it addresses an unavoidable topic that we in our comfort nevertheless evade at every opportunity. Author Rebecca Brown's vivid chronicle of her father-in-law made the Olympic Peninsula, a roisterous cast of characters and their emotions come alive. Other than publication, what more could any author want? Well done!

Standing The Watch- Memories of a home death.......2002-10-02

During a recent online search, I met Rebecca Brown, who offered me the opportunity to review Standing The Watch. I approached Standing The Watch with great interest, and was immediately drawn to this tiny family, a husband and wife, and his elderly father, sharing a piece of land with a dog who is more like a family member than a pet. This wife is Rebecca Brown, and these are her memories.

As we accompany Lincoln Brown in his journey through the Shadow of Death, his daughter-in-law shares the wisdom gained from the experience of Standing The Watch for her much loved Elder. A vivid sense of humour is evident in the liberally scattered and light-hearted ancedotes. This is surely a tribute to a tradition that is sadly lacking in much of our modern day society.

The author is as honest in her assessment of the professionals in modern society as she is fiercely tender in her regards toward her much loved Poppa, her husband David Brown, and the supportive online friends who stuck with both her and her husband through this troublesome and exhausting time.

I was able to look back upon sitting with my own elder and sharing with her this part of her journey. I was blessed to know that she left with no remorse, or regret.

"By attending death with the same seriousness as birth we learn how to die. We gather around to welcome new life, yet disappear when a loved-one signals it's time to die. This is why you must make space in your schedule for writing Standing The Watch", said one of the women in her support system. What a gift we have received, and what a lesson we can take from the experience of Rebecca Brown and her husband.
