        Book Description

The first presentation of the novel interdisciplinary optical remote sensing technique for various ionized diluted media, based on the collisional polarization of the spectoral emission. The aim of the book is to provide a methadology of the impact spectropolarimetic sensing of many solution of many practical diagnostic problems. The book consists of substantial theoretical parts, representing the quantum mechanical theory of the collisional polarization of atomic particles, description of the original impact polarization effects in ionized media, methodology and practical techniques of observation for a very illustrative astriphysical example of solar flares, results of spectopolarimetric sensing, based on the ground based observational data and estimates of the energy transport by fast particles to the upper chromosphere of the sun.

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A990353. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: An analysis has been carried out of a data base of polarized long wave infrared images of the instrumented Research Vessel POINT SUR recorded over a period of two days during the EOPACE measurements series in San Diego Bay in 1996. The measurements were made from a land site on Point Loma with an AGA780 sensor with internally mounted polarization filters. The objectives of the analysis were to determine a possible influence of target aspect angle on the polarization signature, to compare polarization contrast improvement in San Diego Bay with previous measurements in the North Atlantic, and to validate by measurement the estimation of unpolarized signature from vertical and horizontal components. 5508 images representing 70 cases with vertical, horizontal and unpolarized sequences were analyzed. Using a horizontal polarizer, target to background contrast improvement was found with a mean of 1.08 (8%) compared with the 15% found in previous measurements. Estimated unpolarized signatures from vertical and horizontal components agreed with unpolarized measurements with a slope coefficient of .85 to .99. Target signature for major ship facets and for total ship showed no discernable degree of polarization. A total of 37 IDL programs developed for this analysis can be assembled as a package for future data processing.

            Book Description

Magnetic fields are responsible for much of the variability and structuring in the universe, but only on the Sun can the basic magnetic field related processes be explored in detail. While several excellent textbooks have established a diagnostic foundation for exploring the physics of unmagnetized stellar atmospheres through spectral analysis, no corresponding treatise for magnetized stellar atmospheres has been available. The present monograph fills this gap. The theoretical foundation for the diagnostics of stellar magnetism is developed from first principles in a comprehensive way, both within the frameworks of classical physics and quantum field theory, together with a presentation of the various solar applications. This textbook can serve as an introduction to solar and stellar magnetism for astronomers and physicists at the graduate or advanced undergraduate level and will also become a resource book for more senior scientists with a general interest in cosmic magnetic fields.

              Book Description

Much progress has been made in recent years in understanding the complex physics of polarized radiation in the sun and stars. This physics includes vector radiative transfer and spectral line formation in the presence of magnetic fields, scattering theory and coherence effects, partial redistribution and turbulent magnetic fields, numerical techniques and Stokes inversion, as well as concepts for polarimetric imaging with a precision limited only by photon statistics. The present volume gives a comprehensive and up-to-date account of this rapidly evolving field of science.

                          Book Description

This unified approach to charge transfer science provides a valuable tool for the increasing number of theoretical and experimental scientists involved in such areas as physical chemistry, electrochemistry, chemical physics, biophysics, biochemistry, and solid-state and surface physics.
This comprehensive monograph presents the process of charge transfer in the traditionally independent fields of physics, chemistry and biology from a unified point of view. The numerous facets of charge transfer are presented coherently, emphasising the common nature of phenomena which at first sight appear quite different. Detailed theoretical overviews are presented and phenomena such as redox, electrochemical and radiative processes, polarons, proton transfer and biological processes are discussed. All major results of the different processes in physics, chemistry and biology are discussed in detail with special reference to their physical mechanisms, thereby allowing a unified conceptual approach to be applied

Electron transfer, a fundamental chemical process underlying all redox reactions, has been explained in detail, experimentally and theoretically.i have to say that it is an excellent book concerning quantum electrochemistry and quantum biology based on fundamental physics. After i have reviewed this book i wish i could be a electron, as a graduate student majoring electrochemistry.

And i wish i had cherished one, too.

This book covers very well all the processes from rough data to volume rendering. No pre-requisites, all the terminology is explained with a lots of schemes. It also covers OpenGL rendering, but as it was published in 1997, this part is not really up-to-date. Nevertheless it is a good introduction to volume rendering, even if it is quite useless for real-time volume rendering with OpenGL for example.

4 out of 5 stars A great overview of the Volume Rendering Pipeline.......1998-11-04

This book gives a good overview of the typical Volume Rendering by Ray Casting pipeline, and discusses the mathematics without going into too great a depth. The book gives many references on each subject so that the reader can then read more about the topics of interest. The only 'problem' is that the book never mentions a few popular algorithms, such as the Marching Cubes Algorithm.

The story is narrated in a child's voice and Cathy consistantly maintains the childlike point of view throughout the book. The reader can truly see the tragic events through the eyes of a beautiful young girl. Several times while reading the story, I cried for this child who has fallen through the cracks of our society. As a mother, I desperately wanted to jump into the pages, rescue this little girl and hold her safely in the embrace of my adult arms.

Cathy expertly shows the reader the reality of incest and child abuse. The details are disturbing and real. I look forward to reading Cathy's continued account of how she bravely overcomes these terrible life events at such a tender, young age.

                          5 out of 5 stars A MOVING STORY -- FROM THE CHILD'S POINT-OF-VIEW.......2001-08-11

Cathy Brochu's book is a moving account of a tragedy that ooccurs far too often in our so-called 'civilzed' society -- a child, whose innocence should be their birthright, selfishly turned into a victim, a sexual plaything, by a parent, the very person to whom she should be able to turn for protection, care, love, honesty and trust. This sort of treatment ruins the lives of many -- among those strong, determined ones who have the opportunity and courage to break out of the trap and reclaim their lives are people who are heroes in the truest sense of the word. They have learned that they are not to blame for their treatment -- that they did not receive it because they deserved it, or because they are somehow 'defective' -- and that, through education, therapy and hard work, they can take back what has been stolen from them. Cathy Brochu has written this book -- detailing graphic, grim events in her life as a young girl -- so that others may find that courage, that they may realize that they are not alone, and that there are many good people out there who care about giving them the help they need.

Utilizing a technique unique among the books of this field which I have read, Brochu effectively gives her child-self a voice with which to relate her story. As I read this book, I was struck by the language, the syntax -- it was as if I was reading the hand-written journal of a young girl. I could easily close my eyes and imagine the words written in pencil on one of those old Big Chief tablets that I used in school as a kid.

The story is admittedly heartbreaking, but there is a determination in this young narrator -- a determination to free herself from the situation that, as the book progresses, she knows more and more in her heart to be wrong. All of the symptoms and feelings with which victims must struggle and cope on the road to becoming survivors are here -- the feeling that this is the only way she will be loved; the fear of being seperated from her dad, even though he is abusing her; the feeling that she somehow is the one in the wrong -- but in this case, in this book, we see and feel these through the child herself, described in her own words and language.

Cathy is planning a trilogy -- this book is the first installment -- detailing her abuse, finding her (physical) freedom, and taking the painful but necessary journey to making her life her own again. This story is a compelling one (all the more because it is true) -- I can wholehertedly recommend it not just to those who are survivors, or to those professionals who work in this vital field, but to the general public as well. The best chance we have to rid ourselves of child abuse, our greatest shame, is through education. This is an unpleasant subject to any right-thinking person -- but it is something that is horrifyingly real to far too many. The more we know about it, the more we learn to recognize the signs present in a child who is secretly being abused, the more light we shine on this topic -- the fewer places there will be for the perpetrators to hide.

In 1995, Cathy Brochu was awarded the Women of Courage Award by the Syracuse (NY) Commission for Women -- not only for having the courage and determination to reclaim her own life, but for openly and frankly speaking out on the subject, in order to encourage and empower others to do the same. She and others like her (and thank God, they're out there) are the reason that this battle will one day be won.

I'm eagerly awaiting NEW BEGINNINGS, the second volume in the trilogy, as well as the third. We know the story will have a happy ending -- Cathy Brochu is a happy, healthy, productive woman who cares about helping others -- how she got there is the inspiration.

The editors of this volume, Urofsky and Levy, have edited 6 previous volumes of Brandeis letters: 5 volumes of general business related correspondence and one volume of letters between LDB and Frankfurter (particularly interesting in light of the allegations of improper conduct made in Bruce Alen Murphy's "The Brandeis/Frankfurter Connection"). This volume is somewhat different, in that it concentrates upon Brandeis' correspondence with family members, principally his wife, two daughters and brother Alfred. The value of the collection is to afford another insight into Brandeis the man, and it certainly fills that bill. The editors have maintained the outstanding quality of their previous volumes in terms of annotations and explanations of LDB's sometimes ambiguous references, including quotes in German. The most interesting aspect I discovered was that LDB, who never cracked a joke in the previous 6 volumes, and was always somewhat formal and withdrawn, continues to manifest these traits in his family letters. I guess he was just all business, though obviously a loving and attentive parent. A valuable addition to the literature on LDB.

                            Book Description

In 1987, John Rember returned home to Sawtooth Valley, where he had been brought up. He returned out of a homing instinct: the same forty acres that had sustained his family’s horses had sustained a vision of a place where he belonged in the world, a life where he could get up in the morning, step out the door, and catch dinner from the Salmon River. But to his surprise, he found that what was once familiar was now unfamiliar. Everything might have looked the same to the horses that spring, but to Rember this was no longer home.

In Traplines, Rember recounts his experiences of growing up in a time when the fish were wild in the rivers, horses were brought into the valley each spring from their winter pasture, and electric light still seemed magical. Today those same experiences no longer seem to possess the authenticity they once did. In his journey home, Rember discovers how the West, both as a place in which to live and as a terrain of the imagination, has been transformed. And he wonders whether his recollections of what once was prevent him from understanding his past and appreciating what he found when he returned home. In Traplines, Rember excavates the hidden desires that color memory and shows us how, once revealed, they can allow us to understand anew the stories we tell ourselves.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting as far as it goes, but ..........2006-11-14

The Sawtooth Valley is located in central Idaho just north of Ketchum and Sun Valley; Stanley is its main hub and that's where John Rember grew up and where much of this memoir is set. (Those who take notice of the national daily high and low temperature reports might recognize Stanley, which is often listed as the place with the lowest temperature, especially in the summer months.) Rember reminisces about his hard rural upbringing (electricity reached the valley only in the 1950s, during his childhood), of his resourceful and self-reliant parents (there's a good chapter on Rember going poaching with his father for elk meat when they unexpectedly run out late one winter), and of his own early years of living on his own. The best chapter concerns his time spent living in a primitive cabin in Stanley in the late 1960s while pumping gas at the local Texaco station - his uncut hair identifying him as a hippie to the residents. But while Rember's memoir is warm and personal, there's really nothing remarkable or compelling about his recollections or his writing style. The reader is left with the impression that Rember was merely a guy living in an out-of-the-way region where it was cold much of the time and surviving wasn't so easy. Yet he doesn't give us any reason or insight into why living such a life in such a place is worth it. It's a pleasant enough book, but not very provocative.

5 out of 5 stars Words for what I did not know I lost.......2006-07-24

In her book, "but Enough About Me," Nancy Miller says that "Memoir reading works like a kind of interactive remembering -- where the [process] prompt the construction of memory itself" (7). Hole in the Sky (Kittredge) and Breaking Clean (Blunt) are compelling to me because I have a vague memory of the West that comes from living in close proximity, culturally, socially and physically. Traplines casts the same spell, but in an entirely different way. While memoirs might help us make sense of our lives by reviewing the life of others, Traplines helped me make sense of my point of view about what has become of Nature. While Judy Blunt and Bill Kittredge connected with me through honest and courageous tellings of the West, John Rember connects with me through his fine intellect, through his flint-edged philosophies about what we have lost. He helps me find voice to my feelings and frustrations. It helps that I was raised on a similar chunk of heaven, one that has not yet been discovered entirely, or one that has been discovered by a gentler surge of humanity. Still, the Steelhead are nearly gone and the Salmon are all breeders. Nature suffers the loss without telling me how painful its been. Rember helps me to understand.

Reading this book, you get a sense of wonder at the great distance we've managed to carve between ourselves and the natural world. Traplines re-invests significance in the things we take for granted -- from the smallest gestures to the extinction of whole species. It is breathtaking, sad, funny, angry and peaceful, all at once. This is the story of how we got here today, and how we will reckon with that in the future.

                            5 out of 5 stars A Trustworthy Narrator.......2003-08-17

I am awestruck at Rember's ability to seamlessly string together opposing topics and events of his life. Traplines gives the reader a violent shove out of his or her comfort zone immediately, challenging any preconceived ideas and providing new insight about subjects such as death and nuclear war. It's not often that I read a memoir that teaches, while maintaining the trustworthiness characterized by the style.

5 out of 5 stars No matter where you live..........2003-07-16

...you should read this book. The setting is Idaho's Sawtooth Valley, but the lessons are universal. It's about finding a place in the world and making it your own...about how place affects who we are...and about finding peace of mind in a world that is all too transitory. On top of all that, the book is beautifully written. Rember is one of the most thoughtful and thought-provoking authors you'll ever encounter. Do yourself a favor and read this book. You'll find it a welcome respite from today's headlines.

James Lord, an American who has lived in Paris for more than half a century, has been friends with some of the most influential and interesting artists and thinkers of our time. In a previous volume, Six Exceptional Women, he looked back on his friendships with Gertrude Stein, Alice B. Toklas, and four others. Some Remarkable Men provides a glimpse into the lives of Alberto Giacometti, Harold Acton, Jean Cocteau, and Balthus. Lord sits squarely in what is now a very unfashionable branch of the school of biography--he believes strongly in the idea of genius and eschews the notion that the history of an individual is somehow reducible to a set of pathologies that grow out of some character flaw or childhood trauma. The result is a series of portraits that are engaging, insightful, funny, and revealing.

                                  Book Description

With his critically acclaimed acute eye, James Lord has created another series of inimitably spirited, witty, profoundly moving portraits. Haunting, mesmerizing, and endlessly entertaining, Some Remarkable Men reverberates with Lord's unique gift for the intimate portrait.
