Book Description
The discrepancy method has produced the most fruitful line of attack on a pivotal computer science question: What is the computational power of random bits? It has also played a major role in recent developments in complexity theory. This book tells the story of the discrepancy method in a few succinct independent vignettes. The chapters explore such topics as communication complexity, pseudo-randomness, rapidly mixing Markov chains, points on a sphere, derandomization, convex hulls and Voronoi diagrams, linear programming, geometric sampling and VC-dimension theory, minimum spanning trees, circuit complexity, and multidimensional searching. The mathematical treatment is thorough and self-contained, with minimal prerequisites. More information can be found on the book's home page at http://www.cs.princeton.edu/~chazelle/book.html.

One of a kind.......2004-01-17
Deep math meets computer science over
a hugely diverse range of topics:
an amazing book!
An unusual mix of topics, fresh perspective.......2002-06-07
The title seems to be a play on the "Probabilistic Method,"
a better-known cousin of the Discrepancy Method. The book
covers an unusual mix of topics, and is very well-written.

Story to tell, but not well told.......2005-05-04
Hell Was Empty: A Biography From The Third Reich by Dieter W. Gombert, AuthorHouse, 557p.
In the opening pages of this book, Author's Reflections, Dieter Gombert states "much has been reported about the Holocaust and the incredible sufferings of the Jews, but they were not the only victims of the monstrous Nazi Regime. Many German gentiles, who were social Democrats, Communists, or plain dissenters, were tortured and murdered. Those perilous times brought out the best and the worst of human society." This is the only insight into the book's contents since there is no cover overview or description, nor is any provided by listings with book distributors. What follows is a story told by the author about his German father and Jewish mother and his own experiences. The beginning of the book covers father, Wilhelm Gombert, a recognized opera performer, who encounters problems because of his marital situation. Most of the book, however is mainly devoted to Dieter Gombert's personal experiences from 1933 until 1948. It is better classified as an autobiography rather than a biography. The book is well illustrated with pictures of family and friends, various residences of the family, and the personalities referenced in the book.
Hell Was Empty is published in larger than average print size and the style is very informal. This may have been done to give the presentation a personalized feeling, but this reader felt as though he was reading a diary or informal ramblings. Unfortunately there are many spelling and typographical errors.
Mr. Dieter is continually in search of himself, and, while he attempts many activities, his main objective seems to be a theatrical career with emphasis on acting, dancing and singing. This brings him into contact with a variety of people whom he always describes very clearly as to physical features and attire. He has very strong opinions about the people introduced and offers insights into their past activities, making future references to them when they are affected by the war. He is clearly a womanizer and describes many affairs during his discourse. At times his adventures almost sound like a travelogue with details of places visited on bike rides and other excursions. Life seems to go on despite the war and this appears to be his purpose in such descriptions. These scenarios are periodically interrupted with a statement or two about the political and war situation. These are situations that required additional comment, but are only addressed by personal wishes that Hitler would be ousted. It is clear this was not a national desire.
The War is covered in more detail as the United States enters the conflict toward the latter part of the book. The effects of the bombings on civilians and the encounters in the bomb shelters as well as the devastation have a very emotional impact. His efforts to leave Germany and go to Sweden become the main theme of the book as he encounters the obstacles presented by Nazi officials and border crossings. He is continually at odds with the United States for not ending the war and offers some armchair advice for reaching that objective. He finally succeeds in reaching Sweden, where the family is eventually re-united. In 1948 he immigrated to the United States.
Mr. Dieter has a story to tell. There are many apparent remembrances and dangers he experienced as a resident in Germany during World War II. He was not permitted to serve because he was not a pure Aryan and his Jewish status was a constant barrier to his activities. There are many materials available today on the subject of the Holocaust and those who opposed Hitler's regime, but the depth of such resistance is not presented in this book in a readable and convincing manner. Much of this has to do with the writing style and rambling of much of the text. There is also a failure to expand on discussions with family and friends without detail which would better help to understand conditions, in general and viewpoints in Germany at the time. .

Diplomatic Nitty Gritty .......2005-07-30
Living Abroad with Uncle Sam is full of keen insights as to how American embassies function, or don't. The author draws on a twenty-year diplomatic career - some of it spent in hot spots like Berlin and Prague and other times in non-spots like Zurich, Kigali and Kaduna - in this memoir that recounts the joys and frustrations of diplomats abroad. Through ancedotes of personal involvement, Weinland telss of the bottled up democratic fervor in communist Czechoslovakia, the evolution of democracy in Nigeria, ethnic division in Rwanda and the fall of the Berlin wall. However, it is not the events themselves that make this a valuable book, but rather the context, the setting of them against the reality of everyday diplomatic life. Seeking to answer the question, "what was it like?" the author writes candidly about her friends, political contacts, colleagues, servants, bureaucrats of every description, housing, shopping, travel, pets and health. Dropping the diplomatic cloak, Weinland shares thoughtful criticism of American foreign policies as well as internal State Department procedures. Although she does not name the worst offenders, Weinland does not pull punches when describing the foibles of her colleagues and contacts.
This is an excellent book for anyone who wants to how how diplomacy really works on the ground and what goes in to making and sustaining our representatives abroad. It should be required reading for every new Foreign Service officer.

Book Description
Rafael Chacn (1833-1925), witnessed the end of the Mexican Period and was a participant in commercial, military, and political events during the early decades of the American era. His account represents one of the few surviving documents to record the Hispanic point of view. Its publication in English provides an important new source--unique in its detail, anecdotal style, and human interest.
Chacon wrote his memoirs in his seventies to record for his family the drama, adventure, and sorrow he had experienced. As a child in Santa Fe he observed the execution of the leaders of the Rebellion of 1837; as a thirteen-year-old Mexican military cadet, he served with Manuel Armijo at Glorieta Pass when Stephen Kearny's army marched on Santa Fe. During the 1850s, Chacn was an Indian fighter and trader, surviving several near fatal incidents in the Ute War of 1855 and later in trading caravans onto the Great Plains.
During his later service in the Civil War, Chacn repeatedly distinguished himself even though he never mastered English. He commanded volunteer companies, including one at the Battle of Valverde, fought Indians under Kit Carson, escorted the first officials to the newly established territory of Arizona, and as one of the few Hispanics to attain the rank of major, commanded Fort Stanton at the end of the war. Following discharge, Chacn served several terms in the territorial legislature before homesteading near Trinidad, Colorado.
This book offers new insights into events in New Mexico history during the Mexican and early territorial periods, especially the Civil War years.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating reading for American history buffs........2000-06-04
Rafael Chacon (1833-1925), personally witnessed the end of the Mexican Period and was an active participant in commercial, military, and political events during the early decades of the American era from territorial status to statehood. Legacy Of Honor: The Life Of Rafael Chacon, A Nineteenth Century New Mexican is unique in its detail, anecdotal style, human interest and presents one of the few existent Hispanic points of view on the era and events surrounding the creation of New Mexico. Chacon wrote his memoirs in his seventies to record for his family the drama, adventure, and sorrow he had experienced, including his later service in the American Civil War. He fought at the Battle of Valverde, fought Indians under Kit Carson, escorted the first officials to the new established territory of Arizona, and was one of the few Hispanics to attain the rank of Major, commanding Fort Stanton at the end of the war. Chacon went on to serve several terms in the territorial legislature before homesteading near Trinidad, Colorado. Legacy Of Honor is a superbly informative, biographical contribution to academic American history collections, and fascinating reading for American history buffs.

The Trouble With Harry Hay: Founder of the Modern Gay Movement
ASIN: 0807070815 |
Amazon.com
Harry Hay is the acknowledged father (or mother, as he might prefer) of the modern gay liberation movement. As a Communist Party organizer and historian who founded the Mattachine Society in 1949, Hay began turning out essays, position papers, critical studies, and manifestos concerning what it means to be gay in the world. Radically Gay is a collection of those writings, edited by historian Will Rosco, and its breadth and depth is amazing. Radically Gay is an important contribution to gay history and letters; it tells us not only where we have been, but, more importantly, where we might be going.
Book Description
Gay Liberation in the words of its founder.
Customer Reviews:
Great and original contribution to both gay rights and gender identity literature.......2006-05-17
One of Hay's strengths, to me, is the fact that he comes out of a different tradition than the post-structuralist philosophical one which is prevalent these days. Hay was able to talk about the experience of being queer and of what the possible social implications of that might be by taking the philosophical material he got as an instructor in Marxism for the Communist Party, particularly that deriving from Engel's work "On Private Property and the Family", and extending and extending it, modifying it here, dropping some of the dogmatic features of that type of Marxist thought along the way and instead integrating the lived experience of being queer and spirituality into a heady mix which gives insight both for queer people, focussing on queer men, themselves about themselves and of the role that gays and lesbians play and have played in society throughout history, how capitalism shapes the queer experience, looking at homophobia as being a reinforcer of patriarchy and ultimately patriarchal capitalism, and what non-western parallels for homosexuality are.
Quite a powerful and interesting mix. Highly recommended.
2nd only to Oscar Wilde.......2002-10-19
Harry Hay is one of the fathers of American gay rights. But this is not essentialist idol-praising. Hay was a big part of the big pre-Stonewall organization, Mattachine Society. He was a strong Communist, back when it was risky to be one. In addition, Hay knows a lot about gender theory and gay history and such. He's a sage. Will Roscoe has written a number of important gay books, especially concerning gay Native Americans. Basically, this is an important historical subject written by a strong gay author. You should peep this book if you can.
