Slim practical guide to the basics of establishing and nourishing project teams in many environments. Direct and simple enough to be quickly read by a wide audience, discusses the basic stages of team evolution (forming, storming, norming and performing), roles, processes, and priorities in establishing a productive and cooperative team environment. Very appropriate for today's fast paced, evolving work place.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent auto-biography of the last great Ballyhoo artist!.......2000-10-10

For any 1950s - 1960s horror fan, this cult classic filmmaker writes about his experiences within the crazy & zany Hollywood system of the past in the most entertaining fashion of storytelling. Wonderful tales about how Castle created some of his horror film gimmicks & publicity stunts, to his producing experiences with Roman Polanski on 'Rosemary's Baby.' It is an honest auto-biography in which boths side of Castle are revealed (from the Hollywood filmmaker to the family man he was). If you find this book, get it! It is a collector's item!!!!

5 out of 5 stars This is an amazing book........1999-10-01

This was a great book. It's perfect for anyone who loves movies. William H. Castle was a genious. By the way, this is JOHN WATERS' favorite book.

5 out of 5 stars Horror and Sci-Fi , They don't make them like that anymore........1998-09-30

I found this book to be one of the best autobiographies I have ever read. William Castle made every bit of his life a thorough joy to read.. It was a book that I could not put down. I took it everywhere, just to see what crazy gimmick he would come up with next. A must read. I don't want to give you any details because it would just spoil the book. This book and the two below give a true sense of what it was like to make "quality" B-movies in the 50's and 60's

    Book Description

Everyone loves a carnival, whether it’s the Big Top or a traveling midway kicking up dust. These roving extravaganzas are as amusing as they are mysterious and as innocent as they are sordid. Step Right Up is a one-of-a-kind anthology that collects the finest literature and the most absorbing first-person accounts about carnivals, sideshows, and the circus, capturing all of the spectacle and sensation of this unusual and treasured tradition. A colorful assortment of characters populate the fairgrounds and circus tents of this unique collection from circus legends like P. T. Barnum and Otis Jordan the Frog Prince to a motley crew of ride monkeys and rubes. Step Right Up takes the reader everywhere from a small village in Romania to the streets of Coney Island and offers everything from Fred Rosen’s account of the scandalous demise of Grady “Lobster Boy” Stiles Jr. to imaginative fiction like Michael Chabon’s macabre take on the origin of clowns. The bizarre romance and mystery of the world’s oldest and oddest traveling institution come to life in selections from Katherine Dunn, Kevin Baker, Jim Tully, Flannery O’Connor, Lee Durkee, Robert Hough, Michael Chabon, Fred Rosen, Susan Dickinson, Joseph Michell, Edora Welty, and Ellen Hunnicut.

I suspect this is the same book as "Memoirs Of A Sword Swallower", probably the original title. I will update this "review" once I've received my copy. If you already have "Sword Swallower" be aware this might be a duplicate for you.

That being said, if it is the same book, it is probably one of the best accounts of carnie life out there, and don't hesitate to pick it up under either title if you have not yet read it.

This book introduces readers to a set of powerful and extremely flexible modeling techniques, starting at "square one" and continuing with carefully chosen applications. Some of these applications of methodology include insect oviposition behavior, overwinter survival of birds and fish, avian migration, resource management, conservation biology, agroecology, and human behavior. This book also explains how to construct, test, and use dynamic state variable models in a wide range of contexts in evolutionary ecology, and its complete and up-to-date coverage allows readers to immediately begin using the described techniques. Dynamic State Variable Models in Ecology is designed for self-instruction or for use in upper division undergraduate or graduate courses. It is ideal for students and scientists interested in behavior, ecology, anthropology, conservation biology, and related fields.

I experienced the "tears" and "lump in my throat", as experienced by Billy Joe. Wish all fathers and stepfathers could relate to their sons as did stepdaddy. Enjoyable reading. Going to read others by this author.

In the tradition of coauthor David Maraniss's Bill Clinton biography, First in His Class, this solidly researched portrait of Democratic presidential candidate Al Gore assumes readers' familiarity with his recent political activity. A scant 10 pages covers Gore's eight years as vice president, for instance; the rest concentrates instead on filling in the background. Maraniss and Ellen Nakashima both write for the Washington Post, which published portions of the book, and their journalistic experience shows in a readable narrative that smoothly integrates quotes from extensive interviews conducted with colleagues, friends, and the candidate himself. Persuasive detail and careful analysis thoroughly delineate Gore's personality: intelligent, competitive, driven to excel but not to please. Gore's oft-criticized stiffness and perceived coldness, the authors argue, come partly from a Southern formality inherited from his father, Albert Gore Sr., himself a staunch liberal whose bitter 1970 loss of his U.S. Senate seat convinced his son that it was wise not to get too far left of conservative Tennessee voters. Though a baby boomer, admitted former dope smoker, and firm environmentalist, Al Jr. emerges here as a natural moderate, comfortable working within the establishment. This conscientious chronicle of his life and career gives a good intimation of what kind of a president he'd be. --Wendy Smith

                          Book Description

After losing the closest American election in years, Al Gore remains a fascinating political figure, a man both revered and reviled. Drawing on documents, letters, and interviews with more than three hundred people, including six lengthy conversations with the vice president, the Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter David Maraniss and Ellen Nakashima look closely at the forces that have shaped Gore's life and career to explore the man behind the contradictory public persona. Beginning with Gore's earliest years -- when this son of a senator was torn between elite Washington and rural Tennessee -- one is struck by the image of a young American prince burdened by expectations of his likely political fate. With a new afterword written after the election, The Prince of Tennessee depicts Gore as an intelligent and competent man whose struggles with self-doubt and insecurity made him one of our least understood presidential candidates.

With the same meticulous reporting style and narrative sweep that marked his critically acclaimed and bestselling biographies of Bill Clinton and Vince Lombardi, Pulitzer Prize-winning writer David Maraniss, teaming with colleague Ellen Nakashima, turns his attention to Al Gore. How did a man considered too dull, wooden, and polite to become president become one of the toughest campaigners in recent history, someone clearly willing to do whatever it takes to win? Who is this man who enlisted in the Army and served in Vietnam in a futile attempt to help his anti-war father's political career, then followed his father's path to the House and Senate, and at age forty made his first, premature bid for the presidency, largely to fulfill his father's expectations? The Prince of Tennessee examines the forces that shaped Gore's life and career, revealing why he thinks and acts as he does and what his past might foretell about the kind of president he would be. It draws on documents, letters, and interviews with more than 300 people, including six lengthy conversations with the vice president, to explore the man behind the public figure. From Gore's earliest years -- when this son of a senator is torn between elite Washington and rural Tennessee -- one is struck by the image of a young American prince struggling with expectations and his likely political fate. Yanked back and forth by his competing impulses of ambivalence and competitiveness, creativity and orthodoxy, selflessness and self-aggrandizement, Gore's run for the White House is both uneven and inevitable.

3 out of 5 stars He Failed Because Of His Christian Ethics........2005-09-05

"It's a new day," proclaimed Al Gore on October 6, 1999, in Nashville. It would have been a great day had he stepped out of Clinton's shadow when we learned the truth and not stood by his man. There is such a thing as survival, and Gore was too much of a gentleman to hold Clinton's pecidillios against him. Brought up a Southern Christian, he remembered the Bible teaching that "he who is without sin shall cast the first stone."

Gore wasn't being exactly tolerant of Clinton's absurd behavior (now we know that Hillary ran the White House, so what did old Bill have to do but 'play around'?), he just distanced himself from the sordid affair and tried to pretend it hadn't happened. That's the Tennessee way. Don't get involved in other's dirty laundry, but keep it clean for yourself. His sqeaky cleanness didn't help even when he tried to act like others and do silly dances in public. That just wasn't the real Gore.

Being a private person, as am I, he is introspective and sensitive -- though he didn't show it -- and just not one to turn his back on his 'friends.' Trained by ambitious parents to be a politician, I feel that it would have been better had he been a corporate attorney. Lawyers always exaggerate and fabricate to win their cases, and usually put on a good show. I know, I've worked for some.

Chief Justice Rehnquist overruled the Florida Supreme Court to appoint Bush instead of Gore, even though the public had voted him in. May he roast slowly in hell. Gore deserved that win but he was too arrogant to come down to the normal Tennessean lifestyle. He turned his back on us instead of the fallen hero in the White House. He still acts that way with the press sometimes, so I feel that the job he was prepared for all his life will never accept him. It takes a dab of humility to be the people's choice.

He did go to Viet Nam and that in itself would change an ordinary person profoundly. A V.N. vet told me about the atrocities done to our men out in the field, like the sharpened cane stalks which could gut a person, and the children being used as suicide bombers. Even though Gore wasn't out in the worst of the fighting, he was there, and that matters.

Clinton did not serve any military service and almost ruined all of them during his tenure by 'balancing the budget' at their expense. Both Bushes started wars. Gore would have known how to finish it fast to get on with the world's problems. Because of his not being allowed to take the office he won, Europe has formed their own United States and will be the superpower status we could have kept had Gore been able to take over the White House. He and Tipper are an inspiration to all who know them. He worked hard to inform us of the environmental mess we now find ourselves in; he tried to warn us of the calamity we now endure with the changeable weather and its dire consequences.

I guess the folks in Tennessee were not so fond of the Prince during the 2000 election. Maraniss failed to do his homework because many people in Tenn loathe Gore. I was hoping the author would go into whether Gore's father was a member of the Klu Klux Klan but this appears to have been whitewashed this dirty little secret.

Gore could have done something about terrorism (six Islamic bombings during his VP) but Al was in the bathroom after drinking to much tea at illegal fundraisers.

5 out of 5 stars Explores the Inward Persona.......2002-04-21

Al Gore has been described as a cerebral achiever, a policy wonk with a sturdy propensity to master political minutiae. This is one reason why he has been described as "driven" in a way that his rival in the exciting, close 2000 presidential election, George W. Bush, was not, despite the fact that Bush is the son of a former chief executive.

Maraniss and Nakashima dig out the facts of Gore's boyhood and collegiate days. They provide the formative clues which enable readers to determine what makes Al tick and prompts him to respond to political challenges with a dogged intensity.

Like the now President George W. Bush, Gore had strong political roots of his own, Albert Gore Senior, who was an intense achiever in the same tradition as his son. Gore attended law school by night, romanced Gore's mother and married her during that busy period, then ultimately was elected first to the Congress, then the Senate. He would ultimately be defeated in his bid for a fourth term in 1970 as a result of his opposition to the Vietnam War, which was frowned upon in conservative circles in his home state of Tennessee.

From early boyhood Gore was groomed by his father to achieve the highest pinnacle of political success. This commanding sense of duty would ultimately do him in during his debates with Bush. Despite his command of political facts, and in some measure because of this trait, many voters became nervous by his intensity. As a result this uncomfortable feeling saw these voters gravitate toward Bush and his offhand "ah shucks" manner. Gore was seen as the class smart aleck determined to impress with his encyclopedic command of facts.

This intensity to strive, propelled into Gore early by his father, is explored in great depth extending into his political career as well. Maraniss and Nakashima note that on many occasions, due to this intensity to strive successfully, Gore has been given to exaggerations which his political enemies would seek to extrapolate into untruths. A classic case was Gore's statement that he "invented the Internet." When his qualification is examined one can see that this is an exaggeration rather than a falsehood since he was one of the farsighted Senators to recognize the potential of this soon to become American communications revolution. He became one of the first Washington insiders to propose federal government funding for the new daring project.

Successful biography answers questions by presenting the backgrounds and actions of subjects, making them more comprehensible as people. Maraniss and Nakashima succeeded in this endeavor in the case of Albert Gore.

5 out of 5 stars To understand Al Gore, you must read this.......2002-04-20

I was a huge Al Gore supporter, and then I read this book... and I still am a Gore supporter. It was great to finally understand the man and why he acts the way he does. This provides a very in-depth look at his character and personality, and why he has that tendency to "stretch" the truth a bit.

The section about Gore's service in Vietnam also answers many questions. Gore actually was affected by the experience, and that's no lie.

I have decided from reading this book that Gore will definitely run again in 2004, and the reason I think so deals with his father. Read the book and you'll agree.

Levi S. Peterson has done a remarkable job of researching and collating an enormous amount of material in revealing the wonderful life and career of a magnificent lady. Juanita Brooks, in her own right, was a premier writer of Mormon Utah and environs, who represented the very best in objective reporting in an environment that can be rather reserved. Dr. Levi Peterson, Professor of English at Weber State University in Utah brings Juanita Brooks to all of us who have admired her for so very many years. Professor Peterson has made a marvelous contribution to the autobiographical literature of historical writing, showing the best in organization and leading the reader onward, and onward with great anticipation to the next sentence, and the next. It is as wonderful an account of a worthy life as I have ever read!

                                                Book Description

Outbound is the story of two voyages: an Atlantic crossing in the 33-foot cutter Clarity, bound for Scotland; and the hard voyage of self-discovery that finally brought Bill Storandt to his life partner.

Storandt's account of the adventure he had carefully planned with longtime partner Brian Forsyth and their friend Bob soon turns into a white-knuckled sailing tale, as they encounter a fierce storm four hundred miles from the Irish coast that tests their courage and all their sailing skills. The sea story, vividly evoking life in a small boat on a big ocean, is interwoven with Storandt's flashbacks to his earlier life. Outbound delivers its share of excitement, but it's also a moving reflection on how circuitous our paths can be, even when the destination is clear and beckoning.

This book, in its less than 200 pages, kinda sneaks up on the reader. It starts out with the writer/narrator filled with self-doubts, both about the voyage he has embarked on and his life for his first thirty years or so. Stay with it and you will be richly rewarded. By page 80 or so I was totally enchanted, first by what slowly unfolds to be a beautiful love story. A love story told with such restraint that it wasn't until halfway through the book that I realized that Bill and Brian were actually a couple, and had been so for more than half a decade. He writes about his partner with such understated ardor that I was sure that the story would end in tragedy, or that merely the two parted company. Neither is true.

Oh yeah, and Overboard was also a rip-roaring sailing yarn. And what would have been a rather pathetic coming out story (what took him so long?) until I realized how old he was. Denying oneself and getting married was a more reasonable survival strategy before Stonewall.

I bought this book because I was blown away by Storandt's first fictional novel, "The Summer They Came." However, as a straight male who does not know the first thing about sailing, I did not know what to expect from this work. My enjoyment of Storandt's effort is all the more impressive, given my lack of knowledge about the subject matter. Like all master story tellers, Storandt lets the reader enter his world by describing the situation in detail, with references to more familiar subject matter. For instance, when explaining why he cannot get out of bed during a severe storm, Storandt says that he can no more get out of bed than a potato worm can unfold in your hand ... brilliant! Storandt has 2 running stories in this book. In the foreground is his gripping account of his sailing adventure to Scotland (the homeplace of his life partner) across the Atlantic. In the background, is a discussion of his and his life partner's lives up until the time of the trip, with particular focus on how they came to realize they were gay. I highly recommend this book to even the most staunchly conservative "straights," and to the landlubbers most prone to sea-sickness!

4 out of 5 stars Calling All Sailors & Gay Readers!.......2001-12-14

This is an interesting and fascinating memoir of one man's life who happens to love sailing and who is also a gay man living in a caring and loving relationship. You don't have to have a knowledge of sailing to enjoy this book. Although I have gone sailing a few times, I wasn't familiar with a lot of the sailing terms, but the author explains them very well. The author writes with dry wit, a questioning self-analysis, and deep passion. It was a pleasure to read his story, and it was never boring. This is a true-life story that will have broad appeal to many people.

Storandt tells in vivid detail the story of his transatlantic sailing adventure from Saybrook, Connecticut to Ireland, then on to Scotland aboard his 33-foot cutter named Clarity. He made this journey with his longtime partner Brian, and their friend Bob. It's an adventure that turns out to be exciting, unpredictable, and even life-threatening. They certainly get to test their sailing skills through rough seas, gale force winds, and a fierce storm. It's not "The Perfect Storm", but it's close. Interwoven throughout his sailing adventure we learn all about Storandt's earlier life; his marriage, being a freelance musician, living in the Vermont woods in a geodesic dome, leaving his marriage, coming out, and meeting his soon to be life partner, Brian, a Scottish doctor.

So whether you're hooked on sailing or just want to read a well-written passionate coming out story, this book is for you. I was disappointed when this adventure ended. As good a writer as he is a sailor, Storandt tells a wonderful story I couldn't put down till finished.

He writes it as only a person who has felt it all deeply and directly can do-it's not an "about" something book! So glad he wrote it for all of us-couldn't put thebook down!!!! Spellbound by all the possibilities it opens for each of us!

                                                5 out of 5 stars --.......2001-10-17

Sometimes a friend will surprise you. You know there's a memoir in the works, that it is to be published. Good for him. You'll have to read it. Reading it, you are impressed, knocked out, amazed. This is what happened to me with Bill Storandt's book, Outbound. The two stories, interwoven in alternating chapters, will satisfy both those seeking the taste of wind-driven mid-Atlantic salt spray and those who seek to better understand a gay man and witness his success in finding a life partner. There are wonderful side trips to Julliard, the Vermont woods, the Caribbean, the Scottish coast, and married life.
The book also satisfies a larger audience, however, and it does so with the simplest and most difficult device: honesty. Bill gracefully and without pretense shares his difficulties and successes, both maritime and personal. It is no accident that his boat is named Clarity. Because he has taken the risk to be so honest with us, an unusual bond develops between author and reader. The authenticity of his voice causes us to care about his perception of the world and to examine how it compares with our own. This happens rarely and it is a privilege and an adventure. We are in good hands with Bill, whose gentle and persistent humor, thoughtful consideration, and respect for all parties make the voyages we take with him away from and back to safe harbors both illuminating and very enjoyable.

I literally couldn't put the book down.
