Cox and Chester go for impact with "Doomsday Asteroid".......1998-03-17

"Doomsday Asteroid" presents an interesting perspective on the problems surrounding Earth's defense against cosmic impact.

Part of the defense that Cox and Chester expound upon is a space-based telescope, orbiting the Sun ahead of the Earth, that can provide early warning of an impending collision.

If nothing else, "Doomsday Rock" should be read because of the stirring prologue from Arthur C. Clarke's 1973 novel "Rendezvous With Rama". In addition to providing the impetus for the now-famous Rama saga, the prologue also lends it's name to the Spaceguard Survey that NASA undertook in 1992.

What detracts from the book is the lack of attention to smaller rocks that threaten the Earth. Although much less likely to cause global destruction, asteroids as small as 100 meters can cause vast devastation in urbanized regions and, in the case of a sea strike, coastal areas.

Despite that flaw, "Doomsday Asteroid" is a solid, informative read.

This extensively revised fourth edition of this well-known and much praised book contains a great deal of new material. In particular sections and new problems have been added covering Revenue Management. Hydro Electric Generation, Date Envelopment (efficiency) Analysis, Milk Distribution and Collection and Constraint Programming. The book discusses the general principles of model building in mathematical programming and shows how they can be applied by using simplified but practical problems from widely different contexts. Suggested formulations and solutions are given in the latter part of the book together with computational experience to give the reader a feel for the computation difficulty of solving that particular type of model. Aimed at undergraduates, postgraduates, research students and managers, this book illustrates the scope and limitations of mathematical programming, and shows how it can be applied to real situations. By emphasizing the importance of the building and interpretation of models rather than the solution process, the author attempts to fill a gap left by the many works which concentrate on the algorithmic side of the subject.

If there is anything that I would hold against my favorite Operations Research books - it would be the lack of emphasis on model and structure. Williams' book fills in that gap and is an essential companion to every Math Prog book. It is not a cookbook where one can look up a particular problem and the possible ways to model it. Instead, it takes a systematic and very sensible approach to modeling.
The three chapters on Integer Programming Models are amazingly easy to understand and were a real help during a graduate course in the subject. The huge number of practical examples in Parts 2, 3 and 4 of the book is the real value of the book. I would be hard-pressed for space to describe the range of problems that are modeled in Part 2... Part 3 covers a good deal of discussion on these formulations and Part 4 follows it up with solutions. Though solutions are not discussed in detail, they are a great help for someone who has worked hard through the problems and needs a verification of the solutions.
Another useful section in the book is a chapter on the interpretation of Linear Programming solutions. For a person without a Math Prog background (say, a manager), this kind of material is very useful. In fact, it once served as a good refresher for me in a hurry... and an excellent one at that.
The only sore point is a very limited discussion on nonlinear models.

The Best Book of Its Kind.......2002-04-10

This is one of the only books I have ever encountered that focuses on the practical aspects of model formulation. This is a frequently overlooked aspect of optimization, but models that are well formulated will often result in superior performance. It is particularly strong in the formulation of mixed-integer problems, with a variety of tips for linearizing variable products and for incorporation of logical constructs. It also shows how to model SOS1 and SOS2 variable types. One other area that I found to be particularly useful was a section covering convexity analysis. This was the only book that I've read that did a good job of explaining the concepts and ramifications of problem convexity. Finally, the examples in the book cover a wide range of practical problems. Most are fairly simple, but do a good job of illustrating important techniques.

I highly recommend this book for linear and mixed-integer modelers. However, if you don't use these types of solvers in your work, the book is less likely to be valuable.

Good book for every one.......2001-02-08

Some books are good for mathematicians, some books are good for managers. This book is different. Williams did a good job to combine both mathematic and application perfective in a single book. Even you have only high school background, this book is readable. For senior researchers or grad students or strong math background person, this book is still enjoyable to recall your fundamental of math modeling. The references are not quite updated, however. Also, this book should added some current optimization tools. Even though the title is model building, not solving, it won't be harmful to have the metaheuristics (only introduction) or KKT.

Huck Finn, I could take or leave. Conn Yankee is among my favorit e classics. Joan of Arc---better than other interpretations of
warrior women. I recommend this collection and "Damsel in the Rough" by Ann M. Tempesta.

for fans who wish there were another Huck Finn or Tom Sawyer, you will find Mark Twain's 'joan of arc' just as beautifully written as his more famous 'prince an the pauper' and 'connecticut yankee'. for catholics, 'joan of arc' is even more of a must read, a stunning proof how this great saint has captured the hearts of so many, regardless of their skepticism or creed. Library of America editions are beautifully bound, lightweight, and readable. here they contain the two most famous of his non-mississippi writings with a gem most of us never knew existed. a keepsake for the decades.

A fabulous collection of perhaps Twain's very best works!.......1999-02-20

This collection contains my 2 childhood and all-time Twain favorites - Prince & Pauper, and Connecticut Yankee - and added the magical ingredient of a historical romance I never knew Twain had written - Joan of Arc. Now that I have read this as well, I see that it may be even better than the other two!

The wry sense of humor characteristic of Twain definitely is most in evidence in CT Yankee. All 3 of these works deliver Twain's wide understanding of human nature in different times and sociological conditions, and his admiration of human nobility and greatness of heart in adversity. Joan of Arc unquestionably is the most inspiring of these tales, being the story of the greatest hero (or heroine). The Prince and the Pauper, however, remains a jewel of an adventure story, which any child can identify with, and learn from.

It is a collection to keep forever, and re-read frequently.

I found this to be a charming read that is easily savored in appetizing tid-bits or relished at once as a meal. The recollections of Ms.Tomlinson's childhood growing up on the Mississippi Delta of Louisiana will resonate with all of us, no matter where we grew up. The anecdotes of her family are related with candor, humor, and love, done in the easy style of her popular on-line magazine, All Things Southern. The inclusion of recipes from family, neighbors and friends enhances the personal touch.

Painfully honest..........2003-02-15

As an Old Guard submissive, I was amazed by Vi Johnson's diary. I, too, am expected to keep a journal but the depth of mine does not compare to hers. Expectations differ by Dominant. While my Dominant does not expect me to construct a dungeon in Her home and would absolutely kill me if I were to turn to drugs, She does expect me to change in the ways She considers to be growth. This isn't easy but, after reading this book, I now appreciate how much my Dominant cares. I highly recommend this book to any submissive who thinks there's more to BDSM but doesn't know where to look.

I couldn't even get through this book, it is sooooo poorly written...if you care the least about words, grammar, sytax, details, and compelling story, this so is not the book for you...

Be glad it isn't your past.......2002-08-08

I have many people who go on and on about the "good old days" of SM -- frankly I think their romantic notions need a bit of checking and this diary does it. It is a bit difficult to follow because it is in diary form. You will be shocked, you will be frightened, and you may be turned-off especially if you came into BDSM in the 1990s when SSC because was pretty standard. Because it is a diary, because it attempts to look at Johnson's life, there is little reflection or questioning of the events and people protrayed though there are entries where such analysis does appear it is still from within the mindset of an "old guard slave". For people who "pine for the good old days" this can be a reality check but it may not have been the average reality for every person in the SM lifestyle in the 1970s and 1980s.

Not Quite an Icon.......2002-07-04

Overall an adequate book and does describe a woman who is following her dream. A bit difficult to read and follow but, then again, all Diaries (except The Diary of Anne Frank) are difficult to follow unless one was the one who lived that particular life. Could serve as material for another book perhaps? Too many questions arise such as why are there no pictures of the main characters such as Queen Cougar and Mistress Jill Carter? Readers should know shouldn't they especially when there IS a photo of Viola Johnson? Another question arises is why doesn't the author, Viola Johnson, comment more (either pro or con) on the use of drugs in her "family" and why doesn't the author comment on the presence of the production of Pornography that her "family" seems to need to support itself? As an African-American woman, how could she justify to African-Americans and African-American women in particular that she IS a slave? There are more questions that arise that are left unaddressed in this diary -- no Prologue, no appendices, no references, no dedication, etc exist to explain anything. More could have been done to help make the events in this book make much more sense or even to convey appropriate messages to younger generations than what was accomplished here. This book is okay and accurate from the Old Guard perspective, but fails to lift Ms. Johnson to an Icon status where many now place her.

No, it isn't pretty..........2002-02-05

... but it is brutally real.
If you are looking for fantasy fodder, look elsewhere. This is reality, raw and unpolished.
Vi is one of the Mothers of the modern BDSM scene. She put her life out there so that others could learn from her mistakes. Anyone who ever thought it would be a good idea to sign their life completely over to someone should be made to read this book before they continue along that path. As the saying goes - Be careful what you wish for.
This book is an emotional roller coaster. When Mother Vi writes about her mother I was moved to tears. I felt angry for her when she was "forgotten" by her owners. The thing that drove me to turn the page was the realization that this is as real as it gets. This happened.
If you've been in the scene long enough, some of the players will sound familiar. This just adds to the weight of its truthfulness. And although there are always several versions of the truth, rarely will you ever find someone with the guts to tell their version of it with such frank honesty.
Mother Vi lays it all on the line so that we may learn and grow. To that I say "Thank You."
