Not What I Expected.......2000-12-13
On the basis of the title "Red Hot Handouts," I expected a trade book that would provide tips for how to prepare training handouts as well as provide a variety of examples. Instead, the book contains a number of silly exercises (e.g., a paper airplane, a maze) that can be copied and used for training. I have been in the training field for 18 years and found none of the examples in the book to be useful ...

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A959193. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Military commanders require situational awareness to support real- time decision-making. To obtain information on possibly hostile entities in an area of interest, surveillance system, which receive information from sensors such as radars, intelligence, and other sources, are often used. One of the objectives of surveillance systems that track aircraft is the formation of a Single Integrated Air Picture (SIAP), that represents a coherent resolution of information. Correlation is the process by which sensor measurements and other information are combined to keep the SIAP up-to-date in real time. A correlator, which is the software implementation of a correlation methodology, must resolve ambiguities and conflicting information to provide an operationally useful synthesis of surveillance data. Possible ambiguities include missed tracks, extra tracks, or position and velocity errors. The methods developed in this thesis are designed for use in evaluating the performance of air surveillance systems, of which correlators are an integral part. Maneuvering or closely spaced aircraft pose difficult issues for air surveillance systems. These are addressed by the performance metrics. Using scripted test scenarios in a modeling and simulation environment, comparisons of correlators can be made using nonparametric statistical methods. An experiment constructed in this manner can be used to support acquisition decision making.

there are better.......2000-08-28
The author tries to be a wit ... rather he is really painful. Other times he goes off into blissful lotus lands and at almost every opportunity appears to be attempting to write confusing word problems for an advanced algebra class of left over from an earlier time wild eyed hippies ... I mean if you are in a commune which has dedicated itself to solar heat and raising organic apples .. here is your book ... but for me more formulae and less of the cutesy stuff. Not hopeless just not 'real' useful.
I PUT OFF BUYING THIS.......2000-08-15
because I teach math and I thought "Oh, there won't be anything in this book that I don't already know." WRONG! THis book is a browser's delight. As well as giving relatively clear directions on how to calculate a whole bunch of practical things, it gives away such secrets as how to do those annoying work word problems using only arithmetic, an easy way to do those annoying mixture word problems, how to weigh things using only nickels, the amazing relationship between nickels and the metric system, etc. Highly recommended.
Everyday Problems Answered........2000-07-21
This is not a math book, rather its an answer book that describes how to solve those "everyday" questions we tend to have. The usefullness of this book (especially about it's plain english way of describing money issues) is truly astounding.
This book discusses in easy to read "plain english" how to solve mortage and loan problems, as well as a large collection of general interest problems for the "typical" homeowner.
This is a fantastic book with at least a hundred different problems solved (everything from the true worth of college, to answering annuity questions). I recommend this for anyone who wants to know "How to figure it".

Book Description
Compiled from reports published in 1881 when France held special celebrations to honor Victor Hugo on his 80th birthday.
The 27th of December, 1880, was a fête day at Besançon. The houses in the picturesque old town, which dates further back than the Roman conquest, were hung with flags, and the echoes of music came back from the surrounding hills. On the banks of the river, in the streets, and in the squares, a well-dressed crowd was awaiting a ceremonial of honor. One name was upon every lip - that name was Victor Hugo. The object in the following pages, which are dedicated to Victor Hugo and his century (for the century must ever be associated with his name), to testify our admiration for a man whose every action commands our respect; for the writer who has infused new life into the antiquated diction of our language; for the poet whose verses purify while they fascinate the soul; for the dramatist whose plays exhibit his sympathy with the unendowed classes; for the historian who has branded with ignominy the tyranny of oppressors; for the satirist who has avenged the outrages of conscience; for the orator who had defended every noble and righteous cause; for the exile who has stood up undaunted to vindicate justice; and finally for the master-mind whose genius has shed a halo of glory over France.
Victor Hugo (1802-85) was a French poet, novelist, and playwright, whose voluminous works provided the single greatest impetus to the romantic movement. Hugo was France's favorite son but, more than that, for years he had been her champion, her conscience and her spirit.
The most abiding picture of Hugo is that of the exile: the "Guernsey Tribunal" dispensing judgement and truth across Europe, his patriarchal image enhanced by the beard he grew to protect his weak throat. It is true that he had the vices of his virtues: he was proud, egocentric, sometimes mean, and often unfaithful. But he was a great man, recognized as such and loved as such by his countrymen.

Customer Reviews:
A courageous and honest book.......2003-10-21
I found this book to be a real exercise in courage, humility and honesty on the part of James Blackburn, and I admire him for it greatly. The fall from grace that he experienced would have completely and utterly destroyed a weaker man. To be so high and to fall so low is truly not to be underestimated. Blackburn is to be commended for sharing as much of his personal story as he did.
The honesty with which he deals with his depression are perhaps the most compelling parts of this book. It's rare that a reader is granted access to the inside of a depressed mind. Blackburn does a decent job of showing the reader what his state of mind was like at the time.
All in all, however, the book suffers from Blackburn's storytelling skills. The book reads rather much like it was directly transcribed from dictation. There is very little art in Blackburn's writing.
Nevertheless, I'd recommend this book to anyone who is suffering from work-related depression. It's truly a unique and useful read in that regard.
James Blackburn.......2003-01-16
I would be depressed too if i knew i put an innocent man in prison.
Factual and courageous.......2001-05-17
Jim Blackburn is a wonderful person who has chosen to open his heart to the world. The lessons to be learned by his journey from respected lawyer to convicted felon and then to waiter are invaluable. Without having a preaching or condecending tone, Jim relates to the reader his experiences and what he learned from them. It would add another wonderful chapter to his story if this books becomes a best seller.
Candid and inspirational.......2000-09-27
I have a great deal of respect for the author. Writing this book must
have been a daunting task; one that required an immense amount of
courage. Mr. Blackburn's candor and honesty are unique and refreshing,
and the story of his fall and relatively rapid return to grace
sensational. Overcoming depression is a daunting task, one that many
individuals are unable to conquer. The first step in the journey may
be to recognize that you need help. Admitting that you have a problem
can be difficult and painful. Once you admit the problem and find
help, you must work extremely hard to conquer your demons! Overcoming
depression is a great deal of work. This book inspires readers to
climb their personal mountain to achieve and overcome obstacles. I am
both inspired and refreshed, and I sincerely admire the author for
coming back despite odds that appeared insurmountable. Although local
readers are likely to know the story of Mr. Blackburn's conviction,
writing the book has turned the story into a national one. I
appreciate and admire the author for his honesty, strenth and courage,
and wish Mr. Blackburn future success. I hope he continues writing!
Much needed lessons.......2000-09-01
The title of this book may initially attract you because of the famous Jeffery Mcdonald murder case. But the book itself ends up being about every man..our temptations, our potential for self-destruction without regard to education or socio-economic status. And yet James Blackburn gives us a message: there is redemption--but apparently only through confession, humiliation and loss. This is an easy concept to preach but actually doing it is another thing entirely. This book is written by a man who did all of it and lived to tell the tale as a better person. It was gave me insight into myself and others--- and taught me not to judge a person by scandal in the newspaper.

The "W" in Swear is Up Side Down.......2006-03-19
BOOK REVIEW
I SOLEMNLY SWEAR
By Micheal T. Hurley and Kenton V. Smith
IUNIVERSE PUBLISHERS
ISBN: 0-595-29947-4
This book interestingly appears 17 years after the bombing of Pan Am flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland that set off a still unresolved international who-done-it. At first glance the work appears to have some merit, considering the Author's credentials in international law enforcement. Unfortunately, this reviewer quickly concluded that it is a boring heap of vengeful ineptitude.
Micheal Hurley, a retired federal drug agent, turned Mossy Rock, Washington tree farmer, falls on his own chain saw, while whittling the truth into toothpicks. He was mentioned in world-wide media reports in the 90's as one of several U.S. agents who may have triggered the terrorists plot that brought down flight 103 in 1988.
His central theme is that main-stream media, from New York to Sydney, falsely tied him to C.I.A. covert operations that armed and trained Libyan and Syrian based terrorists to blow up airliners. He was based at the American Embassy in Kabul Afghanistan when the U.S. was backing Osama Bin-Laden, and, later, in Cyprus where he actively recruited Arab drug dealers to be C.I.A. covert operatives. One operation the C.I.A. ran with Mr. Hurley was called Goldenrod, an over-blown capture of a Beirut used car salesman, turned dubious sky-jacker, in September, 1987. Mr. Hurley denies he played any active role in C.I.A. Ops, but admits now he is working on a book about Goldenrod.
Mr. Hurley claims his arch nemesis is Les Coleman, a former U.S. Defense Department operative, and Emmy award winning investigative reporter who covered the Middle East for NBC and ABC News in the 80's and 90's. Mr. Coleman co-authored a book, Trail of the Octopus with former New York Times editor, Donald Goddard, in 1993. Mr. Hurley tries to win over the reader by dwelling on a small settlement he had brow beaten out of Coleman's British publisher, using Great Britain's arcane libel law. Trail continues to be sold in several countries, including Canada and the U.S., and in several foreign language editions. A cyber version is readily available for down-loading.
I Solemnly Swear was apparently intended to answer his numerous critics. Even with the pointed pen of his co-author, retired English teacher, Kenton V. Smith, Mr. Hurley fails miserably. His research relies heavily on several journalists to boost his credibility, including a defrocked reporter at the Atlanta Constitution. Ron Martz falsely named security guard Richard Jewell as the Atlanta Olympics bomber, costing his newspaper $millions. Joining Martz is Lloyd Burchette, a Georgia Soldier of Fortune gadfly with a merc-and-lurk past, and hero worshipper of the Grand Moofta of arm-chair mercenaries, the late Mitchell Werbell, III. Others include a sacked New York Magazine writer, and a relative of the late Theodore Shackley, Director, C.I.A. Counter-Intelligence.
In 1988, according to published accounts, Martz and Burchette went on a world-wide drug trek for The Constitution, with the cooperation of Mr. Hurley's bosses at the Drug Enforcement Administration. They were welcomed with open arms at the U.S. Embassy in Nicosia, Cyprus, and Mr. Hurley even arranged for them to slip into Afghanistan.
Mr. Hurley's version of the Pan Am disaster is further discredited with his propensity for school yard profanity and childish name-calling.His own supervisors at D.E.A. HQ are labeled "slugs" by the author who also poo-poos a federal prosecutor in New Orleans who once labeled Mr. Hurley " a disgrace to his profession", by "perjuring himself" on the witness stand. In 1986 a three judge panel of the Italian Tribunale De Roma ruled that " Mr. Hurley's testimony simply cannot be believed."
Nor can the assertions Mr. Hurley makes in I Solemnly Swear, leading this reviewer to conclude that the "W" in "Swear" is upside down. Mr. Hurley obviously chose to spend his wood chips on publishing rather than Prozac. He attempts to seek solace in retribution, at the reader's expense, reinforcing his role as a timely federal attack dog, to, once again, dissemble and demonize those who blew the whistle on the government's link to the Pan Am 103 disaster.
The author's only purpose in publishing was to attempt to blur the fact that his cronies at the C.I.A. armed and trained those who blew up Pan Am 103.
Little wonder such cop-roach ambiguities crawled from beneath a rock worthy of its own zip code.

229 pages about cleaning out ditches.......2006-04-03
Stanley Crawford is not a bad writer. He's not.
But "Mayordomo" is not a good book.
It is EXCRUCIATINGLY boring, and that's coming from someone who is obsessed with New Mexico culture and history, who thoroughly enjoyed Annie Dillard's equally plotless (but much better written) "Pilgrim at Tinker Creek," and who lives right next to a small town known for its acequia--the Spanish name for the ditches that regulate so much of New Mexico's irrigation water and that form this book's subject.
During the time I read this book, it was all I could do to force myself to pick this book up and continue, but because it was related to some research I was doing, I did. I think during the time I read this, I read literally fourteen other books, all books picked up in a desperate effort to read anything but this. It is PAINFUL.
A more high-falutin' type might tell you that this is a book about laboring to maintain the aquatic, agricultural lifeline of a traditional Hispanic town. And it is.
But what that also translates to is that this is a book about cleaning out a ditch: ...removing leaves from the ditch, removing fallen limbs from the ditch, evening off the ditch's sides with a workcrew, arguing with people about cleaning out the ditch, and so on and so forth.
Here, I'll open the book at random to a few spots, and see what comes up.
Page 61: "We pull and pry the branches out with the pitchfork and rake."
Page 185: "The obstacle, a massive tangle of muddy branches and twigs at the fence dividing Jose's and Rupert's fields, proves to be unyielding to my half-hearted efforts."
Page 47: "The ditch banks are high along here and in good condition; there is no need for more than a superficial cleaning."
Page 82: "The channel must be moved back into the hillside a foot or two along seven or eight feet of the bank or whatever will give us enough dirt to fill up the hole and move the channel into firmer ground."
Page 213: "The engineer picks up a sharpened two-by-four stake and writes 'Start Here' in black marker on it, and then he and Hollander place it at the southeast corner of the future structure, next to the trunk of the beaver-felled cottonwood that straddles the ditch, and drive it into the soft sand."
I swear those are all from me just opening the book at random. The ENTIRE book is like that. The whole book is about cleaning and raking and shoveling out ditches!
The prose is dry and unexciting, the plot nonexistent, the characters too numerous and nondescript to keep track of, and to make it all even more pointless, all the names--even the name of the community it's set in--have been changed, so the book doesn't even teach you anything you can apply to a real place.
On the plus side, I did learn some acequia terminology that has come in handy to me here in small town New Mexico--"tareas" and "parciantes" and all that--and it did make me want to volunteer on a ditch cleaning myself just to see what it's really like. And it is one of the only books on its topic.
But overall, it's not worth it. Unless you are the type who just loves really quiet foreign films in which people do nothing but talk, this is not the book for you. There are better books about New Mexico, better books about nature, better books about Hispanic culture, and even better writings by this same author. (I recommend his article on San Antonio, New Mexico. Now THERE's a town with an interesting acequia, complete with armed standoffs between locals and developers.)
Maybe I just have the attention span of a kid raised on MTV, and the (lack of ) sensitivity of a guy who laughs at Quentin Tarantino films, but I still don't think it would have been asking too much of this book to please just not be so incredibly dull, bland, and eventless.
Read this only at your own risk, or to help with your insomnia.
The best book I ever read!.......2006-03-14
I was so taken with A Garlic Testament that I drove my family to New Mexico to see what Crawford was talking about - I didn't discover Mayordomo until I returned to Kansas City - drove back! Two great books! Two great trips!
The real New Mexico.......1999-01-22
Far too many accounts of life in New Mexico are written by people with an agenda, often Anglos who came here to "find themselves" or "get back to the land" and were outraged when they discovered that reality wouldn't cooperate with their fantasies. By contrast, Stanley Crawford arrived with an open mind and integrated his family so successfully into a small, predominantly Hispanic village that he became the "mayordomo" in charge of administering the community's irrigation system. This book recounts his experiences and describes the workings of the community, in which the water system performs an important symbolic function as well as a practical one. It's well written, sometimes almost poetic, and often very funny. I think this and Crawford's "A Garlic Testament" are far and away the best books on life in rural New Mexico, and I recommend both of them unreservedly.
The acequia system of northern New Mexico.......1996-06-17
In "Mayodomo" Stanley Crawford describes his experience as manager of an "acequia" or irrigation ditch system in arid northern New Mexico. The use of acequia-irrigation originated in Spain and was introduced to the desert Southwest by Franciscan monks over 300 years ago. Acequias feed from rivers or larger acequias, and from these larger tributaries water is run through farm land and orchards then back to the main source. Each year a manager (mayordomo) and three commissioners (comisiados) are democratically elected to oversee water rates and insure fair distribution of water to each "parciante" or landowner who farms along the ditch. Acequia association members are historically of Hispanic or Latino descent, so Crawford's anglo heritage creates an interesting viewpoint of an age old tradition.
As mayordomo Crawford supervises the annual spring clearing of his association's acequia, determines the amount of water that each parciante will receive, and is partially responcible for record keeping and payrolls. A parciante's share of water is determined by the nature of his plantings and for a larger part, the weather. As manager of his ditch Crawford must also contend with family feuding, annual dues or "delincuencias" and parciantes who "cheat" by diverting water to their lands.
Crawford's observations take more into account than the physical labor and political hierarchy associated with the maintenance of an acequia. His words create a meaningful perspective of life among the residents of an old northern New Mexican farming community and his story reveals a group of people that have been chronicled by few writers and generally ignored or forgotten by everyone else. It is a book with literary, anthropological, political, and historical significance. Spanish water laws, established long before state government regulations, support solidarity and insure the parciante's place in the community. Recent land and water legal disputes threaten to undermine an important aspect of life in northern New Mexico, one that keeps these communities together and has done so for hundreds of years.

Great collection.......2002-12-20
Coates gives the reader the essentials in this "uncovered" edition. While I would have preferred an index, this collection serves as a wonderful primary source for the student of gay history, and a great read for anyone interested in Oscar Wilde or one of the earliest modern legal defenses of homosexuality. Despite surprising claims that the "love that dare not speak its name" defense is *not* a defense of homosexuality, even the most cursory read will show it is a brilliant defense of homosexual love in the classical (age-differentiated) sense, which was the very type of romantic/sexual relationship Oscar Wilde and Bosie Douglas had formed.
