Book Description

Analytical methods, that combine a chemical sample treatment step with a spectrometric technique, applied to the determination of metals and metalloids at trace and ultratrace levels are discussed in this book. A thorough critical survey of the literature for the period 1985-1994 gives references to source articles always readily available in peer reviewed journals.

The book comprises three parts. Part I discusses general aspects of successive steps of an analytical procedure from sampling and sample decomposition, through separation and preconcentration to spectrometric determination. Flow injection analysis, hyphenated techniques and speciation are included. Accuracy in trace analysis, sources of errors and the role of CRMs are also covered. Part II is devoted to practical aspects of sample handling and multielement trace analyses of environmental, geological, clinical, and industrial materials. Each chapter contains several tables summarizing procedures for multielement analysis of real samples and certified reference materials available for method validation. Part III contains 54 alphabetically arranged monographic reviews on spectrochemical trace analysis for individual elements. Each chapter gives basic information on analytico-chemical properties of the element which is followed by an overview of methods for its separation, preconcentration, and instrumental detection. Particular attention is given to practical issues, difficulties and quality assurance during the analysis of real samples. Each chapter contains tables summarizing the key steps of the procedures developed for the trace element determination and the detection characteristics reported.

Review of George Younkin's : Industrial Servo Control Mechan.......2000-04-25

A large amount of pertinent info for a relatively small number of pages. The brunt of the information is for those with a substantial trig and calculus background in the engineering community. However, the first six chapters can be understood by an experienced technician, who would stand to gain a substaintially higher level of understanding of control systems and applications. So, if you're an electromechanical engineer or a robotics tech looking to gain more knowledge, you will benefit by having this book nearby for reference.

A nice start but...........2006-04-05

Amanda Smith does a fair job in assembling a number of letters to, from and about her grandfather, Amb. Joseph P. Kennedy. She does not hold back some of the more unsavory parts of his life, from the affair with Gloria Swanson to the use of racist terms for blacks and disparaging comments about Jews. Her introductary essay is very moving and well written. Certainly this book helps dispel a number of the myths that the sensationalist books on the Kennedy patriarch seem to propel.

And yet there is much more that needs to be done. These can not be all of Kennedy's letters; we know that a number of them remain almost inaccesable to researchers. Furthermore, while some of Joseph Kennedy's public speeches and statements are included (for example his endorsement of FDR in the 1940 campaign from which the book takes its name), a number of key speeches (such as Kennedy's testimony in support of Lend Lease and his radio speech on the same issue from January 1941-speeches that do a great deal to dispel the myth of Kennedy as a pure isolationist) are not included.

Without more access to the Joe Kennedy papers, he will remain a mythical figure, the target for sensationalists and scandal mongers. Kennedy's important role in American life and politics warrant more attention and this collection is not a bad start but much more needs to be done.

White wash of a dark family.......2005-03-13

I suppose if you have not read any legitimate studies about the Kennedy's you might find this book interesting, but it really is a very selective and misleading account of a family that has had a major impact on the USA. While it is good to see these letters published, I suspect that there are hundreds more which will never see the light of day since they would paint a much more balanced picture of this family. Joseph P. Kennedy was a very rich, very influential pol in Democrat Party politics. He was also someone who got in bed with the Mafia, which probably led to the death of JFK, got into bed with numerous Hollywood sluts, which gave his sons their lack of a moral compass, was a physical coward when it came to dealing with Fascism, and a bigot who didn't really have a problem with Hitler's "final solution" in getting rid of the Jews he hated from the core of his being. But he did a good job of using his millions to steal the 1960 election through voter fraud to get his son elected. I suspect that he never gave a thought to whether it was all worth it while seeing his sons buried. The most interesting thing about these letters however is that his remaining spawn, Teddy, is really the apple of his father's eye. A total pol, with zero understanding of the need for some view of the future through something other than a politician's lens, JPK Sr. was a great teacher for Teddy's willingness to turn a blind eye to evil and run for cover when the going got tough. A revealing book when you consider that the editing done was to put this family in the best light. But at least it is a start, and future revelations will show this book to be the unbalanced white-wash that it is.

HISTORICAL MISSIVES - A PEEK BEHIND THE CURTAIN.......2001-04-20

Famed patriarch Joseph Kennedy Sr.'s granddaughter, Amanda Smith (she is the daughter of Jean Kennedy Smith) did an extraordinary job of collecting missives written by various family members over a period of nearly half a century. The years 1914-1961 are meticulously laid out in militarily neat precision; it is through these letters that readers glean insights into the dynamics of a famous family.

My favorite parts in the book were the letters to, by and about the late Senator Robert Kennedy. Third son and seventh child of patriarch Joseph Kennedy, readers are treated to witness his growth and development, almost from the beginning. A composition he wrote at age 13 describing himself and his preferences is enlightening. One can smile at the boy who strove to keep up with his older siblings revisited in the man who achieved leadership status. From all accounts, Robert Kennedy was a diligent worker; the boy who sought to make himself heard by his siblings and by Joe, Sr. became the man who served as the voice for many. In adult life his voice was one that was very much heard and resounded throughout history. In reading this, it was impossible not to cheer his progress and feel encouraged by what he accomplished in his lifetime.

This is a delightful "peek behind the curtain" into the dynamics of generations of Kennedys.

The life of Joseph Kennedy in his own hand........2001-01-09

What a nice surprise to see a book about the Kennedy family based on fact. Smith's choice of letters help the reader visualize Joseph Kennedy as father, businessman, and ambassador. These letters are as historically important as they are touching. Smith's work has given us first hand accounts of many great historical events of the 20th century. This book will prove to be an important resource for biographers as well as a wonderful gift to Smith's own family. Highly recommend.

Superb Book!.......2001-01-05

I have read countless books on the Kennedys and I've got to say this is, by far, one of the most valuable books I've read.

Amanda Smith, who is Joseph P. Kennedy's grandaughter, did a phenomenal job gathering correspondences between Joe Kennedy and family members, dignitaries, colleagues and friends during the years of 1914-1961. The manner in which Smith compiled the letters allows for a smooth and enjoyable read of the book.

I am quite impressed (and thankful!) that Smith meticulously documented and made footnotes of the individuals who were either the recipient or author of a letter or are mentioned in the correspondence - as it provides the reader with a much better understanding of the context of the letter.

I've always had a strong appreciation and interest in reading original documents and writings. Amanda Smith truly did a fantastic job editing the letters and showing a new side of Joe Kennedy which I never saw before.

Definately well worth the cost of the book and most certainly recommended with the highest regard for those who enjoy reading about the Kennedys, political science, or correspondences.

Here is the first scholarly study of the life and thought of Benoît Malon (1841-1893), the most persuasive and visible spokesman for reformist socialism during the early years of the French Third Republic.
Active in the generation of the French Left that came of age under the Second Empire, Malon was a prominent member of the First International in Paris and later joined the Paris Commune. As a result, he was forced into exile in Switzerland and Italy during the 1870s, where he became entangled in the struggles within the International. Malon attempted to steer a course between Marxist authoritarianism and anarchist utopianism, which he continued on his return to France in 1880.
Vincent analyzes Malon's role as activist, editor, and author, arguing that Malon drew on a strong tradition of left-wing French republicanism. In his mature works, Malon articulated a socialism that emphasized broad moral and socioeconomic reform and advocated parliamentary rule as the appropriate source of national sovereignty. In helping the republican socialist Left shed its revolutionary associations, he pointed the way for later reformist socialists from Jean Jaurès to François Mitterrand.

A flawed but fascinating military memoir.......2005-04-25

"Soldier of the Year," by Jose Zuniga, is the memoir of a United States Army soldier who was discharged after publicly announcing he was gay. Zuniga was a decorated veteran of the Persian Gulf War who had attained the rank of sergeant. The title alludes to a significant military honor bestowed upon him: being named Sixth U.S. Army Soldier of the Year in 1993. This memoir covers his life from his birth in 1969 to the end of his military career in 1993.

Zuniga's story is consistently interesting and compelling. But I found the writing style often irritating and distracting. The whole thing has a self-absorbed, adolescent flavor to it (understandable, perhaps, when one considers that the author was only 25 years old when the book was published). The prose is at times sickeningly flowery, at times annoyingly bombastic. He seems to be trying too hard to sound either learned or clever (such as when he calls a group of military personnel a "coven of courtesans"). Sometimes he just sounds bitter and childish (as when he mocks Senator Strom Thurmond's hair). The stylistic flaws of the book are particularly regrettable because they detract from the many important issues he raises.

Zuniga discusses his combat zone service as both a military journalist and a medic. He also covers his stateside tours of duty. He paints an often searing portrait of a gay soldier's closeted life. One of the most fascinating sections of the book involves the question as to whether or not he improperly wore an Army award ribbon on his uniform during a public appearance; this material, including a fascinating appendix to the main text, gives readers a glimpse into the practical inner workings of the Army. Also significant is Zuniga's account of his public activism and his own evolving relationship with the larger lesbian and gay community.

Along the way, Zuniga cites a number of other American military personnel who have publicly challenged the ban against gay people serving openly. He also cites Randy Shilts' monumental history of gays in the military, "Conduct Unbecoming." Despite the book's flaws, I consider it a valuable document in the significant body of works that deal with the controversial issue of gays in the military. For a military "coming out" memoir by a much more seasoned soldier, I recommend "Serving in Silence," by Margarethe Cammermeyer.

worst of the ex-military gay autobio's.......2005-04-18

Though the back cover shows Zuniga being comforted by Reverend Jesse Jackson, in the text, Zuniga proves himself to be an unrepentant conservative. He got upset when another gay military activist told him to stay out of the limelight, but he lied to the press just to prove a point that he didn't really have the standing to make. He never explains whether he is in a love triangle or what some people refer to as "a V." He was a journalism major, so one wonders if he outed himself just to be able to write this book. In all fairness, those readers from conservative backgrounds and in the services may related to him.
