5 out of 5 stars Valuable tool when establishing standards for new trainers.......2001-04-12

As a corporate trainer, I used this book as my guide for facilitating valuable training classes for my particpants. Although the information is basic, it is fundamental and very easy to read. Now that I am managing a training department, I have used it to write job descriptions, select qualified trainers, establish trainer standards, and train new trainers. I recommend it to anyone with these responsibilities. Mine is always within easy reach!!!

5 out of 5 stars Maybe obvious, but critical.......2001-01-17

Some might criticize the content of this book as being nothing but common sense. It's true; if you are an experienced, accomplished teacher you may discover little that is new. But Powers is attempting something else: to establish, for administrative purposes, those competencies for which trainers (or teachers) ought to be held accountable. It's not the last word on the issue, but it certainly is a good start. Nowhere else will you find such a clear and concise discussion of the criteria by which instructors can be judged.

1 out of 5 stars It states the obvious.......2000-12-31

I am an experienced instructor. I purchase many books about training, based on recommendations and reviews here and elsewhere. Most of them have new and interesting ideas contained in them.

I found this book to state the obvious. It did not offer a single useful suggestion about how to deal with presentation, classroom, students, preparation or any other item.

If you have a tinge of common sense, and have taught in the classroom even a few times, you will not find anything new here.

I have no opinion as to whether novice instructors would benefit from reading this book. Clearly, experienced instructors would not. I.e. this book, at most it will get you to one step beyond novice. It will definitely not get you to be a "master".

I have used this volume to set standards for the instructors in our Corporate Training Division for the past five years. I am ordering more copies for two new employees - one with experience looking for more polish, another a junior trainer needing a baseline for training etiquette. This book is a valuable tool for both individuals, as well as others in between. Great information and ideas!

5 out of 5 stars Recommended to scholars and graduate students.......2003-09-23

Introduction to Stochastic Search and Optimization provides comprehensive, current information on methods for real-world problem solving, including stochastic gradient and non-gradient techniques, as well as relatively recent innovations such as simulated annealing, genetic algorithms, and MCMC. It is written to be read and understood by graduate students, industrial practitioners, and experienced researchers in the field. Web links to software and data sets, and an extensive list of references of the book allows the reader to explore deeper into certain topic areas. I also found the index to be very comprehensive and carefully done. The appendices are as a refresher and summary of much of the prerequisite material. The book is somewhat unique in providing a balanced discussion of algorithms, including both their strengths and weaknesses. The book is among very few books that have integrated essential parts of statistical fields with optimization and decision making. The book's inclusion of a chapter on optimal experimental design is an example of such integration. The approaches discussed in the book could be used for financial decision making, forecasting, and quality improvement, among many other areas.

            Book Description

In all of literature, there are few books with the vitality of The Golden Ass. The story follows Lucius, a young man of good birth, as he disports himself in the cities and along the roads of Thessaly. This is a wonderful tale abounding in lusty incident, curious adventure and bawdy wit.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A wild and entertaining romp of a novel.......2006-03-07

This is certainly an entertaining reading experience and Robert Grave's translation makes this 1800 year old novel come to life for modern audiences. The book is full of stories within stories, a device that I found very entertaining and reminded me of the best works of A.S. Byatt. The story within a story approach allowed for multiple wild digressions of the most fantastic types. Stories of magic, murder, rape, incest, poison, bribery, theives, beastiality, orgies, homosexuality, and all other manner of hair-raising encounters populate the multiple stories within stories.

Yet there is certainly a strong central theme and storyline in the plight of poor Lucius, the attorney turned into a donkey. The world and humanity are seen anew through the eyes of an ass.

The book does take one major departure with the longer story of Cupid and Psyche, skillfully told. The book ends with another change of pace when Lucius devotes himself to the gods, especially the goddess Isis/Diana/Artemis, the White Goddess.

I think the book was excellent and would never have survived so many centuries if each age did not find the human condition to be much unchanged despite the wild and wooly tales encountered here.

5 out of 5 stars Humor. Sex. Adventure. Magic........2005-10-21

Everyone should read The Golden Ass, especially this translation. Just reading it can deepen a person. It's one of those books to be treasured and re-read every few years, finding new insights and humor. The Cupid and Psyche portion is rousing and sly and stands alone. I've given copies as gifts over the years and notice my friends still hang on to them long after.

            5 out of 5 stars An under-rated classic........2005-08-04

I was glad at least one reviewer recognised that the 'Golden Ass' culminates in the story of Lucius' initiation into the divine 'Mysteries.' At this point the entire feeling tone changes, shifting into another key - along with the language. W.Y. Evans-Wentz, famous for his Tibetan Buddhist studies, regarded the 'Golden Ass' in its entirety as an expression of the Western Mystery tradition.

Tales of magical metamorphoses are the very stuff of antiquity, and while Apuleius 'Golden Ass' more or less occupied a category of light-reading - akin to the modern novel (novella), it is worth bearing in mind that 'magic' was real enough for Apuleius' and his contemporaries. At one point in his life, Apuleius had to appear in court to defend himself against charges of using magic to profit his circumstances. Most translators touch on this. Thessaly was renowned for its witches and witchcraft - and Lucius' fascination with it, in the story, probably typified how many young people actually felt. The counter-point and climax in the story, Lucius' initiation into the Isiac religion, regaining human form, transformed in outlook, also reflected a shift in the contemporary outlook. It is hard for us to understand today, but Apuleius - a Platonist, probably subscribed to the Isiac religion. In fact, the beatific vision conveyed in the story of Lucius' conversion - borders on a theosophical vision of totality, Isis - as a formless-form.

Reviewers inevitably pick up on the bawdy element, bestiality etc., and while this may not be the sort of book you would want to read to children, the 'raunchy' side of it has been exaggerated. As Robert Graves remarked, when Lucian takes on assinine form, his rich Pasiphae "is no mere bestialist, but shows her genuine love for the ass by planting pure, sincere, wholly unmeretricious kisses on his scented nose " - which puts a rather different perspective on things. Still, there can be little doubt that - for Lucius, acquiring the form of an ass signifies a kind of fallen state. It has sometimes been said that the 'religious' element - Lucius' initiation into the Mysteries of Isis, was inserted as a kind of dupe, something to appease moralists and put them off track. But the juxtaposition of profane and sacred imagery in the story is one of a piece.

St. Augustine read the 'Golden Ass' and was influenced by it. There are obvious allusions to the Metamorphoses in Boccacio, and Shakespeare. There are no fixed rules about reading this book, but it is worth looking at Robert Graves' remarks about the symbolism. Seen in its earlier religious context, the Ass was also a religious symbol. Marie-Louise von Franz wrote a whole 'Jungian' commentary on this Roman fable. Other people have taken a less elevated view, seeing the metamorphoses of Lucius as nothing more than a ripping read, full of bizarre imagery and fantastic scenes. But Roman fables have connected meaning, which will not become apparent if we take them literally. Unravelling the symbolic attributes of this tale is a kind of long term project you might take on, if you enjoy the book. I recommend reading several translations, because Apuleius' Latin is as tricky as it is interesting. Besides Robert Graves' translation, there is Jack Lindsay's version, the old Loeb edition by Gaselee (basically a reworked version of Adlington's text (1566) - and, so I hear, a new Loeb edition (haven't checked that out yet).

4 out of 5 stars An amusing classic.......2005-02-13

Graves has given us a very readable rendering of this classic. In brief: Lucius is magically turned into a donkey, but keeps his human intelligence. His first donkey use of that intelligence is to realize that he'll be safer playing it dumb. He goes through many changes of owner, but all owners ahve one thing in common. They don't care what a donkey sees or hears. This puts Lucius privy to all manner of stories, which are recounted here. There is a bit of tame bawdiness, but other stories describe a wide variety of exploits, intrigues, romances, and adventures. Lucius, the donkey, is involved in several close calls. In the end, he is restored to his human form.

There's no plot here, in any modern sense of the notion. Instead, this is a series of vignettes tied together by the donkey's bridle. That makes this book easy to pick up and put down.

This might be a good way to introduce teen readers to the classics. The topics (all but one, at least) are safe enough, with enough villainy to make the stories interesting, but with the good guys winning out in the end. Through it all, there is Lucius' plight, always bordering on but missing catastrophe. This isn't the most memorable story from the Roman era, but it's an easy one to enjoy, in comfortably modern language.

5 out of 5 stars Something to read waiting for the roses to bloom.......2004-09-14

This is a highly readable, fun and nonpedantic translation of a novel that deserves to be better known. Although there is a religious journey underlying the story, the story itself is always front and center -- this is no sermon. As do many of its successors, this book uses the story-within-a-story format to shift narrators and to expand the plot possibilities. In addition to stories of banditry, barratry and bestiality, because the fantasy world of the stories is set in the real world of Romanized Greece, reading this story will take you to strange places indeed.

                                  Book Description

Translated and edited by Robert English and Elizabeth Tucker, with an Introduction by Robert English

With a Foreword by Jack F. Matlock Jr., Former U.S. Ambassador to the Soviet Union

A fascinating insider's account of the tumultuous era of perestroika, which brought an end to the Soviet Union.

"Anatoly Chernyaev's portrayal of the perestroika period is the most significant memoir by former Soviet officials published up to now. It will be an irreplaceable source for historians. But it is more than that. It is an absorbing account of the way Soviet policy was made in the last years of the Soviet empire. [It contains an insightful and instructive description of the steps by which Europe was united and the Cold War ended.] And, by no means least, it gives us some understanding of the author, hitherto little known to the American public, but one of the most remarkable of those statesmen who helped end the arms race, the Cold War, and the isolation of his own country."—from the Foreword

"Mikhail Gorbachev's historic leadership, which transformed Russia and international relations, cannot be fully understood without the diary-memoir of Anatoly Chernyaev, one of his most important advisers and closest confidants. Splendidly translated, edited, and introduced by Robert English and Elizabeth Tucker, his Six Years with Gorbachev is now available to everyone who wants to comprehend those final momentous events of the twentieth century."—Stephen F. Cohen, New York University

Drawing on his own diary as well as secret documents and transcripts of high-level meetings, Anatoly Chernyaev recounts the drama that swept the Soviet Union between 1985 and 1991. As Gorbachev's chief foreign policy aide for most of that period, he played a central role in efforts to halt the arms race, discard a confrontational ideology, and open his country to the world. And as Gorbachev's confidant on many domestic issues as well, Chernyaev offers rare insights into the struggle over glasnost, the growth of separatism, and the rise of Boris Yeltsin. While admiring of perestroika's founder, Chernyaev is frank in faulting Gorbachev for his hesitancy in economic reforms, for his delay in decentralizing Union-republic ties, and above all for his misplaced faith in the reformability of the Communist Party. Altogether this book is essential reading for those interested in the Cold War's end, the USSR's collapse, and especially the role played by ideas, ambitions, and key pers! onalities in these momentous events.

Georgia Jensen and friend, Ellie Forsythe, find themselves embroiled in another suspicious death when Georgia, against her better judgment, agrees to speak at a symposium for historians. The most Georgia expected was publicity for her one-woman retiree's business, "Historical Research, By George," not a dead body. But that's exactly what Ellie finds shortly after she joins Georgia on the final day of the symposium. Hoping the death of one of the speakers would put an end to what Georgia termed "two of the worst days of her life," their hopes were dashed when the final day wasn't cancelled, and the police ask that everyone involved stay on campus until they complete their investigation. Unhappy with having their vacation plans disrupted, Georgia and Ellie set out to 'help' the police uncover the real motive for the rising young historian's murder by following the victim's research trail through the 1920s. Wading through old newspaper microfilm, books and old city directories, they begin to realize that those efforts may not be enough to lead them to a cold and calculating murderer. The reason may lie in the past of one of others involved in the gathering of illustrious academicians, some of whom aren't exactly what they seem to be and something much more difficult to research. The deeper they dig, the more muddied the situation becomes. And their efforts may lead to naught. Unbeknownst to them, a killer is watching and waiting, prepared to put an end to their meddling if need be. As they move closer to the truth, the killer might just manage to do away with the problem of Georgia and her research, especially if Ellie doesn't find Georgia's note in time!

I really enjoyed this book. The book flows along easily as Cleo tells the story of the role skateboarding played in his life as he grew up in Florida's Central West Coast.

Skaters new and old alike will enjoy the "historical" photos of earlier days of ramp riding skateparks. The book gives you a real sense of what it was like to be a part of skateboarding while it was evolving during Cleo's career. More importantly, I think many skaters will relate to how skating transformed Cleo's life as an ongoing positive influence.

                                    Book Description

The New York Times best-selling author of The Bookseller of Kabul paints a stunning and intimate portrait of Baghdad under siege

From January until April 2003-for one hundred and one days-Asne Seierstad worked as a reporter in Bagdad for Scandinavian, German, and Dutch media. Through her articles and live television coverage she reported on the events in Iraq before, during, and after the attacks by the American and British forces.

But Seierstad was after a story far less obvious than the military invasion. From the moment she arrived in Baghdad Seierstad was determined to understand the modern secrets of an ancient place and to find out how the Iraqi people really live.

In A Hundred and One Days, she introduces us to daily life under the constant threat of attack-first from the Iraqi government and later from American bombs. Moving from the deafening silence of life under Hussein to the explosions that destroyed the power supply, the water supply, and security, Seierstad sets out to discover: What happens to people when the dam bursts? What do they choose to say when they can suddenly say what they like? What do they miss most when their world changes overnight?

Displaying the novelist's eye and lyrical storytelling that have won her awards around the world, Seierstad here brings to life an unforgettable cast of characters to tell the stories we never see on the evening news. The only woman in the world to cover both the fall of Kabul in 2001 and the bombings of Baghdad in 2003, Asne Seierstad has redefined war reporting with her mesmerizing book.

The author's honesty and sincerety shine through this tale of the fall of Baghdad. Her portraits of the Iraqi people, both before and after the war, really made them real to me.

Asne Seierstad has managed to combine empathy, compassion, emotional attachment to the city and people of Baghdad with phenomenal objective reporting. Refreshing to read about the war from a non-US perspective. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars What Went On In Iraq?.......2007-01-17

Asne Seierstad is a brave woman. In this book, she recounts her one hundred and one days in Iraq. The duration spans from before the American invasion/liberation, to a few days after the US "won" the war. Pre, during, and post.

Each of the three periods saw its share of hurdles, as Seierstad recalls with journalistic detail (but novelistic prose). Before the war, the trouble was finding a story at all. She was, at all times, to be accompanied by an interpreter who often served to censor who she could approach and what she could say while also intimidating the interviewee to bite their tongue. In a country where everyone says they love Saddam using the exact same slogans, how can one get a story?!

It is obvious the pitfalls of being smack-dab in the center of Baghdad during an American invasion. Seierstadt recounts her torn feelings about staying and leaving. On the one hand, an obligation to inform. On the other, an instinct towards self-preservation.

While she only stayed a few days into the aftermath of the US "victory," the trouble now was getting the story right. Some praised the US; some were angry at them. Most hated Saddam after all; a few extolled him. Instead of not having a story, the problem now was that everyone - with their new found freedom - could not wait to talk.

Seierstad recounts all of this in what feels somewhere between a personal interest story and a suspense novel. In between her recollection, she interfuses the pieces she wrote as a newspaper reporter. As she says many times throughout the book, her primary aim was to get at the human story behind the geopolitics. She does a good job of it.

This book was of particular interest to me because Seierstad gives an opportunity to get a (seemingly) unbiased glimpse of how Iraq really was and how people really felt about Saddam and the US (before and after the war). Whether you agree or disagree with the war, you will see things you haven't seen before - what day to day life was like in pre-war Iraq. And hopefully, it will get us all thinking about Iraq's future.

                                    5 out of 5 stars A glimpse of war.......2006-12-22

And I say a glimpse, because Asne is not allowed "before" the war to interview people or mingle much. She must go do tourist type activities and have a minder at all times.

This was a great book, not as great as Bookseller in Kabul, but still readable and is eye opening.

2 out of 5 stars Read the back carefully .......2006-10-06

In a rush I read the great reviews on the back of the book and thus decided to start reading this book but I soon realized the great reviews are not justified by this book. I took another look at the back and saw that the reviews are ment for the author's "The Bookseller of Kabul". If I had not been misled she might have gotten another star from me.

                                      Book Description

One of only a handful of reporters to cover the entire war in Iraq from Baghdad, Australia's most trusted foreign correspondent kept a daily diary. This collection documents the compelling human stories Paul McGeough witnessed in the heart of war-torn Baghdad and reveals the stresses and dangers faced daily by the reporters there. With a journalist's eye, he describes the deaths of innocents, cheap propaganda from both sides of the conflict, the American conquest of Baghdad, and the subsequent rampant looting. Providing unique insights into the life of a reporter behind enemy lines, these vignettes reveal the stress of the media's war, with colleagues in danger, dying, and fighting in daily battles with a regime that viewed them as human shields and potential hostages.
