Book Description

Fundamental Managerial Accounting Concepts 2e by Edmonds/Edmonds/Tsay focuses on concepts that are isolated and introduced in a logical sequence. The authors intentionally limit the scope of the material to help students build a solid foundation of the most important concepts in managerial accounting. Fundamental Managerial Accounting Concepts 2e is organized in a distinctive way, particularly in the first six chapters. The objective is to establish a coherent, integrative framework that enables students to build knowledge in stepwise fashion. The authors’ goal is for students to understand the underlying principles of accounting, not just memorize content.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great for Non-Accountants.......2006-10-19

I found the book to be attractively put together and full of examples. They address both manufacturing and non-manufacturing environments - including service industries. Managerial Accounting is a vital tool for businesses as it provides techniques for making better business decisions based on data instead of "hunches". Nonetheless, the material can be difficult to get through. The authors understand this and use real-life examples to help give insight as to the way businesses use these analysis techniques. Because the material can be challenging, I can understand some people finding the material boring. However, given the type of material, I feel the authors have done a commendable job in communicating the material in an appealing way.

1 out of 5 stars Boring read for good subject.......2002-04-17

Reading through this book is a BORE! :( Examples are almost non-existant, there's like nothing (like definitions) on the sides of the pages, and no glossary. How poorly written! Please find an alternative to learn this rather interesting subject. Thank you!

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2001-05-01

Having previously read "Fundamental Financial Accounting Concepts" by the same people, this book was a disappointment. It came off as incredibly dry, and was not all that clear in its presentation of the concepts. The "Fundamental Financial Accounting" volume is great, but I'd recommend another author for the managerial book.

          Book Description

In this time of change and decreasing loyalty between companies and employees, workers in every industry are expressing feelings of being unappreciated, unnoticed, and uncared for. The situation is ironic because businesses spend millions of dollars every year jumping from one sure-fire approach to the next in unsuccessful attempts to improve the work environment. Why have so many techniques failed? It's because so much of what is presented as good management is only a disguised form of manipulation.

Leading With Love explains maternalisic management: leadership based on true concern for the well-being of the organization, the employees, the customers, and the leader. It explains how to balance the needs of all, and avoid organizational ills while nurturing your own personal and career success.

You'll discover why so many exciting business ideas haven't lived up to their promises. Many companies have adopted a succession of the latest techniques without experiencing significant change. The results: frustrated managers and a growing cynicism among both leaders and followers.

Leading With Love is a compelling presentation of how intuitively correct management theories can be implemented and lead to success for you and your organization when supported by the power of maternalism.

                  Book Description

In this Symposium, researchers specializing in pulsation, rotation, magnetic fields and stellar winds are brought together for the first time in order to broaden our understanding of O and B stars. Thanks to advances in digital spectroscopy, new types of pulsating B stars have been discovered. The pulsations can be understood in terms of the recent revision of metal opacities, but the effects of rapid rotation and magnetic fields need further study. Observations in the UV and X-ray regions demonstrate that many B and Be stars show other activity, besides pulsation which is not yet understood. The reason for the enhanced mass loss in Be stars is a question which dominates the Symposium and which remains unanswered, although it is surely to be found in activity at or near the photosphere coupled with rotation. It is shown that the geometry of the circumstellar envelopes around Be stars is indeed a flattened disk as they can now be optically resolved. The variability of radiatively-driven winds from O and B stars are likely related to the rotation of the star. This underlines the central theme of the book: that the various phenomena seen in these stars cannot be studied in isolation.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, original, modern, well-written.......2001-10-16

This introduction is very original in the selection and sequence of topics it covers - systems of linear equations, error analysis, least squares, nonlinear systems, symmetric eigenvalue problems, three-term recursions, interpolation and approximation (including Bezier splines and B-splines), large systems and numerical integration. Notably, the second chapter contains an excellent introduction into the topics of conditioning and stability (well illustrated with nice figures), and, just to mention one example, the numerical intergration chapter contains a section on "adaptive multilevel quadrature" that serves as an excellent and very simple introduction into the principles underlying far more complicated subjects such as adaptive finite elements and other multi-level algorithms. This is not a book that strives to be complete in any way, but rather one that presents very well-written and easily understood introductions into the main topics of modern numerical analysis. Many topics that are standard textbook fare are not found here (such as regula falsi, Hermitian polynomials, ordinary differential equations, and so on), but, on the other hands, very interesting non-standard topics such as three-term recursions are included at length, and with good reason. This is a modern and up-to-date book. It is equipped with excellent examples, many figures, nice proofs, and requires little prior knowledge. 100% recommended. Could be used as a textbook for a nunerical analysis class.

                      Book Description

The Burger Court is part of the ABC-CLIO Supreme Court Handbooks Series. Proving not as counterrevolutionary as its legal architect Richard Nixon had hoped, the Burger Court delivered significant decisions in cases involving the separation of powers (including landmark United States vs. Nixon), federal-state relations, equal protection, free speech, and civil liberties. Another surprise: the Burger Court guaranteed in Roe vs. Wade a woman's right to an abortion, demonstrating that this court definitely had a mind of its own. An understanding of the Burger Court and its decisions is absolutely vital to a basic knowledge of how the Supreme Court fits into the long history of American jurisprudence.

                      Book Description

Earl Warren served as Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1953 until the end of the tumultuous 1960s. In The Warren Court, learn why conservative critics still view this court as revolutionary, out-of-control, and permissively leftist, while its liberal fans still cheer what they view as the court's progressive activism that secured--once and for all--the rule of law for all Americans. As relevant today as they were nearly half a century ago, the Warren Court's decisions remain with us today: the rights accorded to the accused in Miranda vs. Arizona, the limits placed on school prayer in the court's controversial religious decisions, and the abolition of school segregation in Brown vs. Board of Education. These are just a few of the Warren Court's controversial decisions analyzed here.

Excellent history of a little-known and fascinating chapter in early American maritime and trade history on the Pacific coast. Kendrick's and Gray's expedition helped spark Jefferson's interest in the west; their exploits were precursors to Lewis and Clark. Lively and full of interesting anecdotes, particularly of Kendrick's activities.

4 out of 5 stars The definative work on the 1700's PNW fur trade.......1999-04-15

Scofield digs deep into hard-to-find journals and letters from the voyages of the Amercian fur trading vessels Columbia Rediviva and Lady Washington. His colorful descriptions of the meanderings of the two boats paints a vivid portrait of life aboard a trading ship along the mostly-uncharted coast. Most impressive here is Scofield's insight into the men who pressed on with arrogance and greed to find fortune in the Otter fur trade circle of the late 1700's.

Dr. Douglas Owsley, curator for the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History and forensic scientist "reads bones like most people read books." He also gains as much knowledge from them. In No Bone Unturned: The Adventures of the Smithsonian's Top Forensic Scientist and the Legal Battle for America's Oldest Skeletons, Jeff Benedict presents a double story: a sensitive portrait of this extraordinary scientist and a thorough reporting of the landmark 1996 lawsuit, Robson Bonnichsen et al v. U.S. et al. Benedict admits that his initial plan was to focus on the lawsuit, in which a group of scientists sued the federal government for the right to study the remains of 9,600 year-old Kennewick Man--the oldest complete human skeleton to be found in America and claimed by the Umatilla Native American tribe for reburial, but shifted his focus after hearing about Owsley. The result is a fascinating account of how one man's commitment to science and knowledge could help rewrite North American human history.

Owsley is among the country's leading authorities in skeletal research and physical/forensic anthropology. In addition to curating the Smithsonian's vast Native American skeletal collection, he has assisted various government agencies to identify remains in historic cases ranging from the war in Bosnia and Waco to September 11. By reviewing Owsley's input in these cases, Benedict shows how his involvement in (and impact on) the Kennewick man case is a logical outgrowth of his professional standing and brilliance. Part detective story, part thriller, the lawsuit at the heart No Bone Unturned provides captivating reading. Benedict tells this high-stakes story, replete with legal twists and high-powered political maneuvering, clearly and dynamically. One might think that a story about a scientist and a lawsuit could be, well, as dry as the bones Owsley studies. Far from it--No Bone Unturned makes the case for donning a lab coat and fighting the good fight. --Silvana Tropea

                          Book Description

When he's not at a notorious disaster, Doug Owsley is entering tombs and crypts, unwrapping mummies, or climbing into caves to unlock the secrets of bones.

In No Bone Unturned, investigative journalist Jeff Benedict not only unveils a compelling portrait of the man behind America's most notorious cases but also gives us a fascinating look inside the world of forensic science as seen through the eyes of a leading specialist.

Doug Owsley's extraordinary talent has put his phone number on speed dial for federal agencies, from the FBI to the CIA and the State Department. When the Branch Davidian compound in Waco caught fire, when a terrorist-flown plane crashed into the Pentagon, and when mass graves were uncovered in Croatia, the authorities called Owsley. Through cutting-edge science, instinctive artistry, and dogged tenacity, Owsley painstakingly rebuilds the skeleton, and helps identify it and determine the cause of death.

A curator for the Smithsonian's Museum of Natural History, Doug Owsley has handled over ten thousand human skeletons, more than anyone else in America. He has worked with America's historic skeletons, from, colonial Jamestown burials to Plains Indians to Civil War soldiers to skeletons tens of thousands of years old.

That includes the Kennewick Man, a 9,600-year-old human skeleton found in shallow water along the banks of Washington State's Columbia River. It was a skeleton that would turn Owsley's life upside down.

Days before Owsley was scheduled to begin studying the skeleton, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers seized it and announced they would repatriate Kennewick Man, burying his bones on the land of the Native American tribes who claimed him. Along with seven of America's leading scientists, Owsley sued the U.S. government over custody. At stake was a wide body of knowledge about our past and our history that would be lost forever if the bones were reburied. For six years, Owsley fought a legal and political battle that put everything at risk, jeopardizing his career and his reputation.

I first became a Benedict fan reading his books about professional athletes and their ability to get away with violence off the field of play. He's a remarkable storyteller with a journalistic style. I was again outraged at my government taking a lax view of science unless it serves the corporations' interests. I certainly want to know more about Kennewick Man. Well done, Jeff!

I found the book enlightening about the forensic work of Doug Owsley and the legal pursuit of some scientists against US government agencies to make the skeleton known as Kennewick man available for study. I was amazed at just how much information such a skeleton could reveal about the physical and even cultural aspects of early americans.

5 out of 5 stars Where Science Meets the Law.......2005-08-09

Forensic science, at least by one definition, is science applied towards resolving legal issues. This excellent book certainly contains what one would expect in a book on forensic science - primarily the identification of the remains of recently (and not so recently) deceased individuals. The book is centered on the life of forensic anthropologist Dr. Doug Owsley and includes what are probably some of his more exciting cases. About two-thirds of this book is about a legal battle pitting Dr. Owsley and a team of like-minded scientists (represented by a devoted pair of first class lawyers) against the U.S. government regarding the right of the scientists to study an ancient 9800 year old skeleton recently found near Kennewick, Washington, instead of immediately giving it to local Native American tribes for reburial; the skeleton - dubbed Kennewick Man - was found to be anthropologically inconsistent with Native Americans. The book is very well written, exciting and difficult to put down. It would be of interest to forensic science buffs as well as those with an interest in legal issues and how they may be resolved. Highly recommended!

I have met and worked with Dr. Owsley myself at a dig site and this book truly shows what a fascinating person he is. Jeff Benedict transforms this legal battle into a page-turning, intriguing story. Definitely a good read.

                          4 out of 5 stars Fascinating.......2004-07-16

Investigative journalist Jeff Benedict does a masterful job of detaling the story of Kennewick Man - a skeleton dating back 9600 years, causing anthropologists to re-think theories about human migration into the New World, and its court case, causing lawyers and scientists to re-think the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act. A fascinating read, with facts, details and court room drama more reminiscent of fiction than the true story it is. Recommended reading.
