              Book Description

Laser photoelectron emission not only allows investigation of interfaces between electrodes and solution, but also provides a method for fast generation of intermediate species in the vicinity of the interface and so permits study of their electrode reactions. Laser Electrochemistry of Intermediates presents the first-ever comprehensive review of this important phenomenon and its electrochemical applications. The book explores how the innovative method of laser electron emission from metal electrodes resolves two fundamental problems inherent in current methods of intermediate species (IS) generation and detection: difficulty generating IS quickly in the vicinity of the electrode surface and low IS surface concentration. In addition, for the first time, quasi-free and solvated electrons, hydrogen atoms, simple organic and inorganic radicals, and ions with anomalous valence are systematically studied. Laser Electrochemistry of Intermediates incorporates a unique, two-pronged analytical approach. First, the authors consider the kinetics and thermodynamics of the processes based on the participation of IS in its one-electron stages, thus allowing the assignment of real physical meaning to the electrochemical measurables. Second, they consider electrode reactions side by side with homogeneous reactions of electron transfer, facilitating understanding of the universal theory of electron transfer reactions in polar media as well as the peculiarities of these reactions occurring in the interface between electrode and solution.

                Book Description

This book provides twelve computational projects aimed at numerically solving problems from a broad range of applications including Fluid Mechanics, Chemistry, Elasticity, Thermal Science, Computer Aided Design, Signal and Image Processing. For each project the reader is guided through the typical steps of scientific computing from physical and mathematical description of the problem, to numerical formulation and programming and finally to critical discussion of numerical results. Considerable emphasis is placed on practical issues of computational methods. The last section of each project contains the solutions to all proposed exercises and guides the reader in using the MATLAB scripts. The mathematical framework provides a basic foundation in the subject of numerical analysis of partial differential equations and main discretization techniques, such as finite differences, finite elements, spectral methods and wavelets).

The book is primarily intended as a graduate-level text in applied mathematics, but it may also be used by students in engineering or physical sciences. It will also be a useful reference for researchers and practicing engineers.

                Book Description

This textbook is an introduction to Scientific Computing, in which several numerical methods for the computer solution of certain classes of mathematical problems are illustrated. The authors show how to compute the zeros or the integrals of continuous functions, solve linear systems, approximate functions by polynomials and construct accurate approximations for the solution of ordinary and partial differential equations. To make the presentation concrete and appealing, the programming environments Matlab and Octave, which is freely distributed, are adopted as faithful companions. The book contains the solutions to several problems posed in exercises and examples, often originating from specific applications. A specific section is devoted to subjects which were not addressed in the book and contains the bibliographical references for a more comprehensive treatment of the material. The second edition features many new problems and examples, as well as more numerical methods for linear and nonlinear systems and ordinary and partial differential equations.

This book is presently being translated or has appeared in the following languages: Italian, German, French, Chinese and Spanish.

4 out of 5 stars easy to understand and use algorithms.......2005-04-11

As you would expect from Springer, here is a technically very accurate book. It goes over the main concepts of numerical analysis, which the authors call "scientific computing". Same thing, really. Unlike earlier years, where someone studying this field would have to write out her own Fortran code to apply the methods, we now have MATLAB. The authors chose this powerful package as one in which to explain and implement the algorithms.

These algorithms are essentially unchanged from what a book on the topic might have described, 20 years ago. Finding numerical integrals, roots of equations, solving linear systems of equations etc.

But using MATLAB helps streamline any coding. And you are encouraged to code, in the problems supplied by the book. There are even answers to some of these. So quite apart from understanding the concepts, a bonus is that you can become quite adept at fully using MATLAB's abilities as a research tool.

                  Book Description

A Capital Place is how the author remembers MinnesotaÂ's historic Sandy Lake: important fur-trading hub, promised land to a succession of Native American tribes, 18th-century capital of the Ojibwe Nation, and strategic gateway to the Mississippi River from Lake Superior—a route followed by nearly all the famous men of Minnesota history.

In this reminiscence spanning more than a half-century, Laursen writes of boyhood days on a primitive Sandy Lake fishing resort, of his long struggle to become a writer, of exciting years with a youthful Medtronic and of the inspiring sequence of events which led him and his wife to a Bed & Breakfast Inn on the shores of Leech Lake.

                  Book Description

Alex Wellen is an excited, ambitious, and overwhelmed twenty-something law student trying to integrate into one of the most powerful and promise-filled cities in the world—New York. As he moves from graduating student to licensed lawyer—the second most important nine months he ever spent “gestating”—Alex fantasizes about the glitzy, high-powered lifestyle of a Manhattan attorney. He imagines hobnobbing with the elite, eating at the best restaurants, and being a guest at the most coveted social events—but in this city of overachievers, he is reminded every step of the way that he did not go to Harvard. Can he overcome the profession’s snobbery by wearing overpriced ties from Barneys, seat-filling at the VH1 fashion awards, cavorting with B-list celebrities, and throwing TriBeCa loft parties?

Is it enough for him to look and play the part?

Along the way, we meet his fellow sufferers in the dread-inducing bar exam cram courses, his girlfriends and roommate, the law firm recruiters interested in hiring him (and those who aren’t), and the new associates who work with him at a high-profile law firm, some of whom, the odds are, won’t pass the bar.

Savvy and entertaining, Wellen’s story is The Paper Chase meets Sex and the City—a career memoir for anyone who has discovered his or her life’s goal, yet must overcome tremendous obstacles to attain it.

Barman is an honest, revealing, and hilarious portrait of a lawyer as a young man.

Alex Wellen has captured all the madness, urgency and utter panic that envelops the life and times of anyone who is taking the bar. A great storyteller, Alex makes this an interesting, funny, and extremely engaging read. I could not put it down! I cannot remember a book that was this entertaining and enjoyable to me. For anyone who has ever been there, and more importantly, for anyone who never has, this is a great story you don't want to miss!

Alex Wellen is a very funny fellow. I liked "Barman" because Alex tells his story in an engagingly self-deprecating way, yet his feel-it-now style reveals the dehumanizing intellectual hazing process of trying to pass the bar. I look forward to reading more of this gifted storyteller's work.

One of the rare gifts of good writing is an honest voice. In Alex Wellen's "Barman", you can hear his raw voice as he struggles through young adulthood and the modern rite of passage for law professionals, the bar exam. I laughed out loud, sat horrified at the inner workings of the male mind, and cheered his successes. I'm not a law student, I'm not connected to the legal profession, but none of that matters. I adored it and bought one for my brother who struggled through law school and then he sent his fellow law school grads Wellen's book. They all adored it, laughed and winced through it. I don't take the time to write reviews, but this one merits it. You'll enjoy Wellen's tales and cheer on the victories of the every-man!

1 out of 5 stars WAAAH POOR ME I ONLY WENT TO TEMPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-04-06

A friend of mine loaned me this book. Thankfully I didn't spend money on it.

Allow me to provide a brief summery of this book:

"WAAAHA PITY ME I DIDN'T GO TO A FIRST TIER LAW SCHOOL! I ONLY GOT INTO CRAPPY TEMPLE THAT'S ONLY AT THE TOP OF THE CRAPPY SECOND (out of four) TEIR! BOOH HOO! I ONLY GOT IN AGAINST THE ODDS AT A SCHOOL THAT ONLY ACCEPTS FOUR HUNDRED STUDENTS OUT OF NEARLY FOUR THOUSAND WHO APPLY! WATCH ME ACT LIKE A JERK AS I TRY, AGAINST ALL THE FORCES OF FATE AND IVORY TOWER ELITISM, TO SUCCEED DESPITE THE LABLE OF "CRAPPY TEMPLE STUDENT" TATTOED LIKE A MARK OF CAIN ACROSS MY BROW!"

My overwhelming temptation, if I ever met this guy on the street, would be to inform him that I, too, like nearly everybody else in this 'inspired by real events' POS, deep down think he's a flaming loser. I could rant at length. Instead, I will address a few remarks to Temple Law's admissions staff.

Why the hades did you let this loser in rather than somebody who'd have worked with what they had rather than spent so much time and paper malingering over what they felt they deserved, and then feel like they succeeded DESPITE their school rather than BECAUSE of it? I tutored no less than three people for the LSAT who desperately wanted to go to Temple Law, and not one of them got in to ANY second OR third tier school. All of them had plenty of experience in making the most of the cards they're dealt and would've been a better alumni than this pathetic clown, who grates and annoys and makes himself sound like something closer to Forrest Gump than a legal eagle from the first sentance until the last.

All I can say in closing is: thank freaking hell he's not from MY law school, I'd be freaking ashamed rather than just intensely annoyed.

From the chaotic impact of war to the comfort of her family and community, she writes about her youth in a country torn from within and without, culminating in the assassination of her grandfather, Yitzhak Rabin, Prime Minister of Israel.

                  Book Description

"Grandfather, you were the pillar of fire in front of the camp and now we are left in the camp alone, in the dark . . . . Grandfather, you were and still are our hero."

When Noa Ben Artzi-Pelossof spoke at the funeral of her grandfather Yitzhak Rabin, she touched the world's heart. She does so again, in this deeply moving memoir and plea for peace.

A stirring voice from yet another Israeli generation living in turmoil and in danger, Noa, at age 19, reflects on her life to date: a childhood scarred by tragedy and rescued by her family's love; a constant fear--fed by random bombings- for the lives of relatives and friends; the chaotic impact of war--Lebanon, the Intifada, the Gulf War; the hate from outside, and now from within, Israel. Noa talks of her grandfather's assassin and the extremists who nourished his violence.

She shares her precious memories of her grandfather, with whom she lived until the age of six and to whom she remained close for the rest of his life. She offers insights into his transformation from soldier to leader to peacemaker, his courageous determination to change the course of the Middle East conflict, and the steps he took in search of a lasting peace for future generations of Israelis. Noa speaks to him, and to the world.

A book that is pure, passionate, and unfailingly honest -- and goes straight to the heart.

Noa Ben Artzi-Pelossof is a terrific writer. This book helps the reader get a sense of what Prime Minister Rabin was like as a person, and persuasively argues for pursuing peace despite the most difficult of challenges.

                  4 out of 5 stars Sentimenal.......2003-06-09

This book was defintely written by a person who has truly lost someone she loves..her grandfather. I come from a country where virtually any news on israel or her inhabitants is censored. So a book that introduces Yizthak Rabin, even as a loving husband, father and grandfather not to mention a great statesman is a book worth reading.

Briefly, the author introduces you to her family generally and to her grandfather specifically giving you details on how the man was like seen through the eyes of his family. It touches on the peace process, the conflict in the middle-east and even the military life that young israelis go through.

All in all, I would recommend it for an easy read although I must warn all readers that this book might inspire you to find our more about Mr. Yitzhak Rabin and what he stood for.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing book.......2002-02-11

I was 15 when Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated. I remember the great sorrow that was shown in the newspapers and on the television. No one could believe it had happened.

Yitzhak Rabin has always been of great interest to me, and this wonderful book tells an amazing and courageous story. Noa Ben Artzi-Pelossof, Rabin's only granddaughter, tells the story of her grandfather's life as she saw it. She refers to Rabin throughout the book as Saba, the Hebrew word meaning Grandpa. Some of the tales she tells are quite humerous; others are heart-wrenching.

Some might say that this biography is likely to be biased, as it is written by someone who was extremely close to the subject; whether it is or it isn't (I personally believe the latter), this is a book well worth reading. It is the story of a soldier, a politician, a world leader, and most improtantly, a devoted grandfather.

A truly wonderful piece of literature, worthy of a five-star rating.

1 out of 5 stars Touching? Sounds like a show to me..........2000-09-04

Although this book gives some good insights into the Rabin family and the murder, I hate to say it, but it feels like it was written for the money. I understand that she is a granddaughter, but it is no excuse for the extreme melodramaticism and tangible hatred...I came out from reading the book with a very bad taste in my mouth! Sorry!

5 out of 5 stars The best book you could ever imagine.......2000-05-10

I read this book for a school project and it made such an impact on me. I think that Ms. Artzi-Pelossof is an incredible author and I think she is so brave for being able to write about her grandfather. Thank you, Noa!

I love history. I love learning about new people and places. I love discovering information I'd never known before. In this book, I learned a smattering about Johnny Ringo, but honestly, not that much. The fact is there just isn't that much to learn about him. If it wasn't for the company he kept, John Ringo would have likely faded into the obscurity he has enjoyed in his death.

This book was more an exercise in learning new vocabulary words (or words long forgotten perhaps) than it is about true exploration of a person from history.

A well researched and (mostly) interesting book, although even an Englishman like myself had to have a dictionary to hand which made it hardgoing at times! (Where did he learn all those words?!!) Dr Burrows did tend to knock other authors of Western history, but I guess that is useful as we are at least able to take the mentioned books with a 'pinch of salt'.

3 out of 5 stars Needed a better editor than it got.......2003-01-30

I have the distinct feeling that John Ringo the Gunfighter Who Never Was is an old dissertation rendered into a book by a university press interested in promoting works of local history. It reminds me so much of my own history advisor, Tom B. Jones' words to me when picking a topic for my master's thesis, "keep it narrow, keep it simple, get it done!"

The subject is certainly a narrow one. John Ringo was one of the lessor gunfighters among a panoply of truly famous names: Wyatt Earp, John Westly Hardin, Doc Holliday, Jessie James, Wild Bill Hickock, Buffalo Bill, etc. While he may have been in the wings, he took noticeable part in almost none of the really graphic events of his time. The most noteworthy event of his life was his apparent decision to commit suicide.

The topic can hardly be but simple; the author himself admits that there is little concrete data available on Ringo, and he proceeds to demolish most of it in his critique of these sources, some of which are poorly written western adventure novels. To his credit Professor Burrows did manage to locate and critique several Ringo family resources that, for various reasons (for which check out the chapter notes) had not been used previously in an academic fashion.

The coverage of the project took a short 203 pages. It took that many mostly because the author repeats the same information in a variety of poses and with more adjectives than I've seen since attempting to wade through an old harlequin romance at the behest of a friend. Sometimes the sentences are so long one loses sight of where one was going by the end of them. And words? I read voraciously and have a substantial vocabulary-I was once hailed as a genius by a coworker for using "sanguine" correctly in a sentence!-but some of Dr. Burrows' choices suggested that a thesaurus was ever at hand least he be too repetitious.

I do think the book is an important one. It sets much of the mystery of the subject into perspective, which most of the written works heretofore have not. Certainly the on-going saga of the Ringo family's Victorian shame over the black sheep in its midst is certainly an interesting one. The difficult events of Ringo's early life, brings one to wonder how many of the misfits of the old west-or of our own time for that matter-grew out of stressful events suffered during early adolescence, events over which they had little or no control.

I think that what the book needed was a better and more critical editor than it got.

                            3 out of 5 stars Bring a dictionary!.......2003-01-08

Wow...The author spends most of his book bashing other authors and using a language I later found out was english! I spent 30% of my time looking up definitions. Thanks US public school system!
I would recommend this book to western history fiends or the like, but not to the reader actually seeking information (the very idea!) on the elusive John Ringo.

2 out of 5 stars Not Enough Information.......2002-10-19

Jack Burrows' "John Ringo: The Gunfighter Who Never Was" is a well written book that focuses on what other writers have had to say about this legendary figure. Unfortunately, Burrows' concentration on the words written by others, overall detracts the book from telling readers about who John Ringo was or what he did during his life. The first impression one receives is that there is not much information about Ringo and that his reputation was largely achieved through the writings of latter day authors. Yet, Burrows' critic of other writers seems excessive at times. A reader who has little knowledge of Ringo other than his glorified reputation generally will like this book. But, there is far more information known about John Ringo's life than what is presented in Burrows' book. While I do recommend Jack Burrows' book, readers interested in an in-depth presentation of John Ringo's life must look elsewhere. Fortunately, biographies of John Ringo are not lacking. After reading Jack Burrows' book, readers should read Steve Gatto's recently released book "Johnny Ringo." When it comes to presenting information about John Ringo's activities throughout his life, Gatto's "Johnny Ringo" is vastly superior to Burrows' "John Ringo."

                                Book Description

It has been said that if Britain were a republic Oliver Franks would have been president. This is the first biography of this remarkable man, written by a leading historian and specialist in international relations. Lord Franks was an exceedingly deliberate man who, paradoxically, embarked upon his various careers - as don, mandarin, diplomat, banker, provost, pillar of state - almost by accident. A moral philosopher by training and inclination, Franks had a hand in the making of both war and peace in the middle decades of the twentieth century. He secured Marshall Aid for Europe's post-war recovery proramme. He had a major role in negotiating the North Atlantic Treaty. Later, he was responsible for several unusually influential official reports, including that on Oxford University in the 1960s, and, most recently and controversially, on the British Government's handling of the Falklands crisis. This is an extensively researched and thoroughly readable study of the life of a man who succeeded in combining great intellect and public service to a rare degree. Oliver Franks, though personally self-effacing was an immensely influential figure at the centre of public life for many years. Alex Danchev has approached his subject with insight and meticulous scholarship, and the result is a study which does justice to one of the leading public figures of the twentieth century.

                                  Book Description

The controversial and fascinating story of how "safe sex" - the one truly life-saving intervention in the history of AIDS - became inextricably part of the American cultural landscape.

While the practice of "safe sex" has become an American habit over the past twenty years or so, few are familiar with its controversial origins and fascinating social history. Stayin' Alive is the story of how reaching for a condom became as automatic as buckling a seat belt, a story compellingly and frankly recounted by Richard Berkowitz, a former street hustler, sex worker, AIDS activist, and journalist on the disease's frontlines.

"Safe sex" was born out of the tireless crusading, politicking, and advocacy of an unlikely trio whose lives revolved around sex and the consequences of sex: the author, the AIDS researcher and physician Joseph Sonnabend, and the late journalist and AIDS activist Michael Callen. Berkowitz recounts how their work found a way to enable a generation of gay men and sexually adventurous heterosexuals to continue celebrating their sexuality without risking their lives or the lives of their partners - in two words, "safe sex."

                                  4 out of 5 stars A short, interesting history..........2005-01-07

Richard Berkowitz, AIDS activist and a freelance journalist (and former S&M Hustler) writes a compelling history of how safe sex was invented back in the late 80's.

It's hard to imagine now, but there was a time when using condoms was unheard of. There was, apparently, a time when they were quite difficult to obtain because no one used them. That's all well before my time -- back when God was a child. By the time I was old enough to know about sex, safe sex was already the watch word.

But back in the time before time, safe sex was unknown. However, once the direction of the epidemic became obvious -- and more importantly for the author, after a scare of his own -- Berkowitz details how he found ways to continue his work as a hustler, and yet stay safe. His experiences became the basis of the safe sex advice now routinely given out by clinics, educators, and doctors.

What I found most interesting about this book, however, was that it is the first time I've ever read or heard anyone take responsibility for their own behavior and how that behavior unwittingly contributed to the AIDS epidemic. Basically Berkowitz argues that, given the huge number of STDs that many gay men were being infected with in the late 70's and early 80's (infected, and reinfected, and reinfected) people should have realized that such promiscuity was going to have consequences greater than a quick shot of penicillin could cure. He's not laying blame, he's taking responsibility, an important difference, but it's the first time I've read a book where someone had the courage to do it.

This is a short read, but worth a few minutes of your time. Especially if, like me, much of this is history for you.
