                    Book Description

Computational Techniques for the Summation of Series is a text on the representation of series in closed form. The book presents a unified treatment of summation of sums and series using function theoretic methods. A technique is developed based on residue theory that is useful for the summation of series of both Hypergeometric and Non-Hypergeometric type. The theory is supported by a large number of examples. The book is both a blending of continuous and discrete mathematics and, in addition to its theoretical base; it also places many of the examples in an applicable setting. This text is excellent as a textbook or reference book for a senior or graduate level course on the subject, as well as a reference for researchers in mathematics, engineering and related fields.

                        5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Poetry!.......2007-05-17

Li Po and Tu Fu are traditionally regarded by the Chinese as their two greatest poets. Together their poetry has a "balance of nature". Sometimes they are referred to as one poet, "Li-Tu".

This book has a wonderful introduction which tells of each man, his life and together of their friendship. What we know is that they lived during the Tang Dynasty which is considered the 'golden age' of China in which the arts flourished. According to the introduction we do not have an exact date and place of Li Po's birth but it is estimated to be 701 somewhere near the frontier of the Soviet Union. What I love best about Li Po's poetry is his great imagination and imagery. I believe he was a "Romantic" poet. Li Po's view of the world is not set in reality but how he imagines it to be which makes his poetry beautiful. Some of my favorite poems by Li Po: "Drinking Alone with the Moon" about drinking his wine among the flowers and talking to the moon. The moon encourages him and becomes his friend - very lovely poem. Also "Old Poem" is very fanciful and rich - "Did Chaung Chou dream / he was the butterfly, / Or the butterfly / that it was Chaung Chou?" One that I read again and again is entitled "A song of Adieu to the Queen of the Skies, After a Dream Voyage to Her". This is a mystical poem talking of seafarers who tell of the Fairy Isles. The language is simply gorgeous.

Tu Fu's nature is different than Li Po's but he is equally as talented. According to the introducton, "Tu Fu as a man is contrasted with Li Po in almost every conceivable way." Many consider him to be the greater of the two poets. His poems are autobiographical and historical. Several of his poems are ballads to great people and others deal with loneliness and seclusion but they are beautiful and moving to read.

Although the two poets were very different, they knew and respected one another and it is just a matter of personal taste as to which one you might prefer. Either way this is a beautiful book with a rather long but interesting introduction and it is well worth it for the English translations of these poems.

Here's a poem by Li Po saying farewell to a friend:

                        Blue mountains lie beyond the north wall;
Round the city's eastern side flows the white water.
Here we part, friend, once forever.
You go ten thousand miles, drifting away
                        Like an unrooted water-grass.
Oh, the floating clouds and the thoughts of a wanderer!
Oh, the sunset and the longing of an old friend!
We ride away from each other, waving our hands,
                        While our horses neigh softly, softly . . . . "

                        5 out of 5 stars China's greatest poets.......2003-06-18

Li Po (AD 701 - 762) and Tu Fu (AD 712 - 770) are regarded as the two greatest Chinese poets. Li Po was a spiritual poet whose verse deals with consciousness and the human mind, whilst Tu Fu was a chronicler of the everyday life. The book includes a thorough introduction encompassing the pronunciation of Chinese words and names, notes on the Chinese calligraphy and the introduction proper which provides information on the poets and their times, plus backgrounds to T'ang Poetry and the principles of Chinese syllabic metre. The poems are elucidated with explanatory notes and with reference to Ezra Pound's translations in his book Cathay. In this regard, I found here another translation of Li Po's poem The Ballad Of Ch'ang-Kan (The Sailor's Wife) the first part of which was translated as The River Merchant's Wife: A Letter, by Pound. This is a beautiful poem and I was very pleased to find the second part here. Although there is no unanimity amongst scholars that it really is by Li Po, it perfectly completes the first part and Cooper's notes here are very illuminating, especially as regards place names on the Yangtse river. This excellent book concludes with a list of titles and an index of first lines, including poems by other poets in the introduction.

                        5 out of 5 stars More, please.......2001-06-27

I am not giving the stars to the translation or the edition. This is the only book on Li Po I could find available a few months ago. I guess I was lucky enough to run into an old edition of Li Po's poetry at my University library years ago, and had been looking for a copy since then. Got this. Want more.

5 out of 5 stars A unique and valuable introduction for beginners........2001-06-21

Besides giving a selection of enjoyable translations of China's two greatest poets - Li Po (+ 701-762, 25 poems) and Tu Fu (+ 712-770, 18 poems), it also includes a remarkably full and informative Introduction of almost 100 pages which not only serves to introduce beginners to the subject of Chinese poetry, and to the work of Li Po and Tu Fu in particular, but which could also be read with profit by others.

Each of the 43 poems is followed by an explanatory comment, which can range in length from paragraph to essay form. The book also includes a Guide to the Pronunciation of Chinese Words and Names, and, since twelve of the poems are accompanied by the Chinese text in the striking calligraphy of Shui Chien-tung, a Note on Chinese Calligraphy has been provided by the artist for the benefit of those who may not be familiar with the nature and history of this fascinating art form.

Shui Chien-tung has "adopted a manner influenced by Chinese bronze inscriptions [and] has also followed various styles of writing to suit the different poems" (pp.13-14). The result is a clear style which in most cases will cause no problems for anyone who may be studying Chinese characters, since the structure of even the more complex characters can easily be discerned.

Here, as an example of Cooper's style (with my obliques added to indicate line breaks), is the first of two 'sonnets' of Tu Fu's 'At an Evening Picnic, with Young Bucks and Beauties' :

"Sunset's the time to take the boat out / When a light breeze raises slow ripples, / Bamboo-hidden is the picnic place / And lotus-fresh in the evening cool; // But while the bucks are mixing iced drinks / And beauties snow a lotus salad, / A slip of cloud comes black overhead : / Before it rains my sonnet must end !" (p.163)

Cooper's reading nicely evokes the lighthearted amusements of spoiled and wealthy youth, out on the cool water with a party of singing girls for an evening of companionship and pleasure after the heat of the day.

Cooper's anthology has an excellent Introduction, is of manageable size, well-translated, helpfully annotated, uniquely illustrated with Shui Chien-tung's calligraphy, and has other useful features. It would make a good introduction for anyone new to Chinese poetry, and it can also be read with interest by anyone wishing to extend their knowledge of Li Po and Tu Fu.

Those who, after reading it, would like to explore further and learn about some of China's other great writers, might take a look at the excellent anthology by Cyril Birch, another book I can strongly recommend:

ANTHOLOGY OF CHINESE LITERATURE : From early times to the fourteenth century. Compiled and edited by Cyril Birch. Associate editor Donald Keene. 492 pp. New York : Grove Press, 1965, and Reissued.

3 out of 5 stars A good beginner book on Classical Chinese poetry.......1996-11-26

Arthur Cooper includes an introduction to get the reader up to speed on Chinese literary history and the development of Chinese Kanji. The translation of poems loose most of the musical qualities and doesn't sufficiently create a sense of poem. In Cooper's introduction he discusses some of these problems, but having read other tanslation of Li Po, it is an adequate translation. One of the strengths of this edition is that it has the chinese version on the opposite page, so it does try to bridge the gap. The book is intended as an introduction to Chinese poetry and provides enough information for those who want to know the history and expose themselves to Li Po and Tu Fu

                            Book Description

For most of his life, Robert Kennedy stood in the shadow cast by his older brother, John; only after President Kennedy's assassination did the public gain a complete sense of Robert ("Bobby," we called him) as a committed advocate for social justice and a savvy politician in his own right. In this comprehensive biography, James W. Hilty offers a detailed and nuanced account of how Robert was transformed from a seemingly unpromising youngster, unlikely to match the accomplishments of his older brothers, to the forceful man who ran "the family business," orchestrating the Kennedy quest for political power.

The centerpiece of this book is the remarkable political partnership that formed between Robert and John. As the manager of John's political campaigns, Robert proved himself "hard as nails" (in his father's admiring words), relentless in securing his brother's victory and unforgiving in overseeing his brother's presidency. Hilty marshals a great deal of evidence to show that while they did not always see eye to eye—Lyndon Johnson's selection as John's running mate being a notable disagreement—they discussed virtually every issue, gauging the likely political effects of every position. Robert was so close to the President that insiders called him "number one and a-half"; their consultations were so intimate that they spoke in a kind of code, barely intelligible to those around them. In Hilty's evocative but unsentimental recounting of the politcal crises of the Kennedy Administration, Robert and John prove to have been more calculating and astute leaders than today's pundits allow. Theirs was a partnership that was unprecedented and, thanks to an act signed into law by Lyndon Johnson, is never to be equaled.

Professor Hilty provides an excellent study and examination of Bobby Kennedy. Though this is an enormously hefty read. For those new to Bobby Kennedy, a more manageable introduction might be a rather recent book called Robert F. Kennedy: A Spiritual Biography by Konstantine Sidorenko. Though in contrast to Hilty's (brilliant but somewhat unwieldy) tome, this slim short form biography covers Kennedy and his life in great depth and the book's brevity will not disappoint serious biography readers. It is particularly an excellent book to take up before plunging in to Hilty's.

                            4 out of 5 stars A GOOD, OBJECTIVE OVERVIEW.......2000-08-04

It is impossible to write about Robert Kennedy in adult life without writing about his brother, John Kennedy. Hilty does a very thorough job of portraying Robert Kennedy, the dedicated, hard working, determined brother, warts in all in a fair and impartial way. Throughout this book, one sees the "metamorphosis" of Robert Kennedy. He is the man who works behind the scenes, protecting his brother's interests to his maximum extent. He is the man who pushes his brother forward while sublimating his own interests, needs and identity. It is only in the tragic aftermath of the President's death does Robert Kennedy, in full adult form emerge -- the man who immersed himself in classical literature, the man who became a personal crusader for civil rights related issues, the man who made it his business to know minorities and persons living in poverty. It is during the last nearly half-decade of his life that the full face of Robert Kennedy is shown to his constituents -- the man who doggedly pursued Teamsters and Mafiosi in the 1950s takes that same dogged persistence to the political arena where he runs on his own right. He is a voice for the disenfranchised, a voice for those who share his vision. He was a man who provided hope during a very turbulent period in history marked by war and national violence. It is the opinion of this reviewer that Robert Kennedy is certainly the more interesting of the brothers. His personal, political and personality development is very interesting to watch and track. He was certainly a man who came across as very sincere in his efforts and one cannot help wondering what the outcome today would be had this man lived.

This is a book well worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars AN EXCELLENT PORTRAYAL OF A GOOD MAN.......2000-08-03

Robert Kennedy was better than a great man. He was a good man and his track record in minority work certainly underscores this point. I have always believed he was sincere in his efforts and that he truly cared about people. He was of an usual caliber and his loss was certainly one that was keenly felt. I can to this very day remember those two horrendous days in June when he was assassinated and later died. It was the first death that ever affected me personally. I was then a child and I remember saying that "I hate the man who shot Senator Kennedy! I hate him and I hope they throw him in jail forever and I wish Rosey Grier had broken his [the assassin's] head!" My mother gave me some sound advice that I remember today. Her exact words to me on June 6, 1968 were, "Senator Kennedy would not want you to hate anyone. Instead of hating the assassin, pray instead for an end to violence and pray for his family." It took me some time before I was able to do that, and I am glad to be able to say today that I can. Over the years, I have prayed for David, the son who watched his own father die on television and was so consumed with his own grief that he, too, became a casualty. One of my all time favorite stories about Robert Kennedy was his success in climbing Mt. Kennedy in Canada in March of 1965. He was a man whom many described as acrophobic, yet he was able to table his terror and climb that mountain out of love for his brother. (I think the mountain should have been named after ROBERT Kennedy -- he claimed it). He wisely gave credit where credit was due upon reaching the top of that mountain -- he made the Sign of the Cross. I just love this story so much that I have told it before the Toastmasters. I think it is very inspiring and just underscores the character, determination and hard work of a man who worked hard to meet personal goals. Robert Kennedy was in my eyes a success story. I was a history major and he was the subject of my senior project. It was one of the few writing assignments I ever enjoyed and I did well. Robert Kennedy was a man who not only marked sociopolitical milestones in his lifetime. He marked personal milestones in the lives of those who were interested in his life.

5 out of 5 stars Great American, great book........2000-01-22

Robert F. Kennedy was an extraordinary man: former investigator, campaign manager for his brother, Attorney General, United States Senator. His speech to the 1964 Democratic Convention was one the most eloquent speeches ever given. His campaign for the Presidency in 1968 ended with one of the most heartbreaking tragedies in American history when an assassin killed him after winning the California primary.

For myself, RFK represents the better part of politics- the noble spirit and the sense of purpose than the American way of life seems to have lost since his death. People can and should be better to one another, Bobby argued. Government should help the people, he said, but only if those people could help themselves. As a Democrat, I admire Bobby's argument for help, partnership and responsibility between the people and their government.

Professor Hilty has done an excellent job. There are things about Bobby that are difficult to reconcile- why he worked for McCarthy is a good question -and Professor Hilty does a wonderful job writing about them and explaining them. He should be congradulated. I, for one, cannot wait for his next volume about RFK's life.

                                  Book Description

Winning Without the Spin: A True Hero in American Politics is the story of how Walter Capps made it to Congress. A long-time religious studies professor with no political experience, Capps shocked the 22nd district of California and the nation in 1996 by unseating a Contract-With-America Republican and becoming the first Democratic Representative from that District in 50 years. In a hard-fought and high-profile campaign, Capps maintained his principles -- as well as his sense of humor -- while waging a personal battle against the compromises every politician is tempted to make. Winning Without the Spin is also the story of the campaign itself, seen through the eyes of the author, a political novice whose sense of the absurd increased with every hour on the campaign trail. Throughout the history of American politics, few, if any, books have chronicled the day-to-day aspects of the campaign office in such detail, with anecdotes describing everything from personal power plays by staff to the day Wally Baer fixed the toilet. On the campaign trail, the ridiculous melded with the sublime on a daily basis. Above all, Winning Without the Spin is a tribute to the memory of Walter Capps, who brought his unique brand of politics to the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives for only 10 months before his sudden death of a heart attack at Dulles Airport in October 1997.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent account of Walter Capps' political campaign-1996.......2000-05-18

Bryant Wieneke does an awesome job of summarizing the wild ride of Walter Capps' 1996 political victory for U.S. Congress. I started the book at 7:00 p.m. and didn't put the book down until I was finished with it.

Walter Capps clearly is the type of person we should all have representing us in Congress, and Bryant Wieneke brings this to light throughout the book. Walter was a fair, compassionate religious studies professor that continued to look for the best in everyone, admired and encouraged our differences. His philosphy was that we should work with government instead of against it.

The hair-raising day to day operations of a political campaign are exposed in this book, also; not always a pleasant world to be in. The bulk mailings repeatedly requiring sorting by zip codes because the bar code was too close to the postage stamp was frustrating. The inter-office personalities and conflicts were interesting. Arranging events with the President of the United States, fundraising events at the homes of various Santa Barbara celebrities, arranging television and radio interviews, and on and on. I was exhausted by the end of the book, but I got goosebumps as I read the outcome of the election.

Truly an uplifting account of a remarkable man and his all-to-short political career. One can only imagine what may have become of Walter Capps had he lived to serve a long and fruitful life in politics.

Thank you, Bryant, for writing a beautiful account of Walter Capps' life during this two year period. It is truly inspiring.

                                    Book Description

Beyond the Big Easy is a story which gives inspiration to all survivors of abuse. It is the true story of a child reared in the Cajun culture of the Louisiana bayous. It is a story of malicious cruelty and of abusive and addictive parents, of early abandonment and homelessness. Raped by his ninth birthday, he was further brutalized and molested by the 'upstanding' citizens of his island. As a teenager, he was estranged from all that he knew and thrown into a den of hypocrisy. Yet, he would survive and ultimately prosper because of a vision and an internal quest for family unity. This is a story of deep-rooted pain, of trusts turned sour, and of a magic that a boy held on to, nurtured, embraced, and passionately idealized as a man. This book is dedicated to those who may identify with wishes to generate hope, encouragement, and compassion.
