Much has been written about Japanese management practices, production systems and business culture but surprisingly little attention has been given to the development of accounting practices and approaches in modern Japan. Professor Kyojiro Someya, a former president of the Japanese Accounting Association and now Director of the Japan Accounting Reserach Institiute, is one of the most distinguished accounting scholars in japan. In this book he presents an overview of developments under three main headings - Japanese Accounting History, Problems in Financial Accounting, and Cash Flow Accounting. Someya stresses that the focus of his research was shaped by the particular economic and business conditions in Japan. His work on cash flow accounting and fund flow analysis was done in the context of the problems presented by the high inflation in the immediate post war period; the work on financial statements was linked to the need to increase productivity; and his concerns for appropriate international reporting a reflection of the growing economic internationalization of the Japanese economy from the 1960s onwards. In this important and informed collection, Professor Someya also reflects on the broader meaning of accounting information in business and society, its role in business decsion making, and the different ways in which it may be organized and presented in different business cultures.

This book describes numerical methods for partial differential equations (PDEs) coupling advection, diffusion and reaction terms, encompassing methods for hyperbolic, parabolic and stiff and nonstiff ordinary differential equations (ODEs). The emphasis lies on time-dependent transport-chemistry problems, describing e.g. the evolution of concentrations in environmental and biological applications. Along with the common topics of stability and convergence, much attention is paid on how to prevent spurious, negative concentrations and oscillations, both in space and time. Many of the theoretical aspects are illustrated by numerical experiments on models from biology, chemistry and physics. A unified approach is followed by emphasizing the method of lines or semi-discretization. In this regard this book differs substantially from more specialized textbooks which deal exclusively with either PDEs or ODEs. This book treats integration methods suitable for both classes of problems and thus is of interest to PDE researchers unfamiliar with advanced numerical ODE methods, as well as to ODE researchers unaware of the vast amount of interesting results on numerical PDEs.

Very Disappointing Book.......2005-12-03

If you think this book is actually about advection-diffusion-reaction equations, you might want to take a good look at the table of contents. With respect to spatial discretization, there is almost nothing about "reaction" and very little about "diffusion". Besides, most of the material is on classical (linear) methods. For instance, where is WENO? They say much about time integration, splitting, and so forth, but seem to have forgotten that you cannot use that if you don't do a proper spatial discretization.

Fascinating, enlightening.......2004-12-24

This is the most fascinating book I've read in years. Though structured around one pivotal event in the author's life -- her experience in a utopian commune -- any moment or facet of her life as a whole can come up in the telling at any time, in vivid synchronicity. As an impassioned personal quest (the "Lost" aspect), the story breathlessly sweeps you forward like a thriller. But as "Found"ness, the book also has blissful built-in non-linearity and can be read the way one reads the I Ching -- jumping in anywhere. (As a matter of fact, the Ching itself keeps popping up throughout the story.) One reviewer has said "You don't want this book to end", and that's true, but luckily it doesn't have to end.

Hollenbach has an astonishing ability to get the cadences of natural speech onto the printed page. This is one of the great pleasures of the book: The characters and the protagonist-narrator herself speak so livingly off the page it can be almost eerie.

"Lost and Found" is a rich, profound, enlightening book.

Interesting story turned into a bore.......2001-01-31

Most readers of "The Rebel Who Lost His Cause" will probably conclude that John Beckett led a fascinating life during extraordinary times. Nevertheless, the author lets the story drag throughout much of the work, making a 215-page book feel much longer. The author depends too heavily on Beckett's own writings. Given that the author is the son of the book's subject, I would have liked to see a greater number of sources and more perspectives in this work. An author would have to TRY to make Beckett's life seem dull, but somehow, the author succeeded at doing just that.

Amazing Book!.......2005-03-29

I read this book when I was a teenager, involved with gymnastics, and it was such an inspiration to me not to give up. The book is about staying positive in life even when hard trials may come your way. This true story is heartwarming and full of courage. Diane (main character) is truly an incredible person.
