Book Description
Tiny metal structures, less than a millionth of a meter across, are critical building blocks in a number of high-tech devices such as computer chips. These "metallizations" are subjected to extreme conditions of temperature, electric current density, and mechanical load, which may cause the device they are in to fail. This book contains research papers on these metallizations and on the reliability problems associated with them. The papers were peer reviewed for these proceedings.
Book Description
This Primer has two main objectives: to provide an overview of the influence of organometallic chemistry on homogeneous and heterogenous catalysis and to provide an account of the principle commercial applications of homogeneous catalysis in industry. The book builds on the coverage of
organometallic chemistry in two Primers by Bochmann, OCPs 12 and 13.

Book Description
Homogeneous catalysis is the success story of organometallic chemistry. Since the discovery of hydroformylation by O. Roelen in 1938, catalytic applications have paved the way of organometallic compounds in industry. Bulk and fine chemicals, and even natural products are being produced via homogeneous organometallic catalysis.
The enormous breadth of this topic in view of both basic research and industrial application is met in this three volume handbook edited jointly by W. A. Herrmann and B. Cornils. The list of contributors reads like a who-is-who in organometallic chemistry and homogeneous catalysis. In this handbook, experts will find the current state-of-the-art in their field and advanced students will benefit from the concise treatment of important catalytic reactions and processes. With its balanced presentation of the truly interdisciplinary topic and its outstanding editor- and authorship, the 'Cornils/Herrmann' is beyond common standards. Now in its second, completely revised and enlarged edition!
Book Description
Books in Barron's Easy Way Series make fine textbook supplements in a wide array of subjects, and are also ideal for independent study by high school and college students who want to boost their grades. This brand-new Easy Way title starts with exercises in basic algebra and progresses to the point where students will be able to solve word problems through calculus. Problems are clearly and concisely dissected and analyzed. Each word problem breaks down into four successive parts: statement of the problem; its analysis; a work area; and the answer. Chapter One deals with mathematical formulas and their uses. Following chapters focus on mixture and coin problems; perimeters and circumferences; determining areas of geometrically defined spaces; finding volumes of solid forms such as cubes, cones, and spheres; solving integer and numbers problems; solving statistical problems; using first degree equations; solving ratio, proportion, and variation problems; understanding quadratic equations; tackling problems solved by trigonometry, and problems solved by functions of calculus. Amusing line art adds a user-friendly touch to this book. An appendix presents solutions to all exercises and tests plus trigonometric tables.

I finally got it!!.......2007-08-16
After 6 different Algebra classes, 1 geometry math class (and too scared to go beyond any of these due to my extreme difficulty with word problems), all my study guides for the ACT and GRE, I now wish I had only spent money on this. It made me want to retake all the tests I had taken in the past! :) It would have raised my scores more than any other study guide I used. I finally understand how to break word problems down. I thought I was just not very smart in math, but it turns out, no one just ever explained it the way I needed to understand. I feel a lot more confident, although if I take another math class anytime soon, I may need this book again as a refresher. :)
Calculus review.......2005-09-12
Loved this book. The examples were clear and easy to understand. I liked especially the chapters on differentiation and integration. I strongly recommend this book.
The worst math book.......2004-01-19
This book is supposed to be for beginners. Not so. There is a serious lack of explanation of the mathematical formulas needed to solve basic algebra problems. This book assumes the reader already has a grasp on basic mathematical principles. No good for someone who really needs a basic math primer.

My students really enjoyed this book. They laughed out loud in response to the humor. Several students asked me to read it to the class again. Many students read it themselves more than once. Several students were inspired to commit themselves to weight redustion.

Book Description
As lawyer and judge for half a century, John Fitzgerald Molloy has both profited from our legal system and seen how it has been altered in favor of lawyers, to the detriment of society. The book starts with the evolution of the Fraternity, with the author using vivid descriptions of particular cases in which he was involved. He shows that the legal profession has continuously re-shaped the law, in subtle but significant ways, to make legal services ever more necessaryand more lucrative for the Fraternity.
The power the Fraternity now exercises, including the power to decide President Bush over Gore, has been accomplished by creating a new religion, that of worshiping the Constitution in ways the founders did not intendwith lawyers and judges the priests of that religion. Lawyers may not appreciate the revelations in this book, but they should be very interested, for this author knows the profession well, and his analysis will resonate with their own experience. For those who have been appalled by the large fees charged for lawyers' services, this book will be an enlightenment.
For those who appreciate vignettes coming from some of the most interesting cases hitting our courts, this book will be captivating. Molloy documents terrible deficiencies in our legal system and presents practical solutions, such as separating the bench and the bar as is done in other countries in the world. Other publications that decry the ascendancy of lawyers offer no suggestion as to how their power can be curbed. This book does.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2007-07-29
Didn't really need to read the book, as having been in 'the profession' the truth of what Judge Molloy conveys hit me on a daily basis, and eventually left after eight years. The 'politicking' in the courts is abominable, and the public and justice not being served on any level.
Well writen, and as an Arizona especially appreciated his 'take' on the Arizona judiciary and his experiences most of all.
A Trenchant Description of the Degeneration of the US Legal System.......2007-02-15
This is a heartfelt, straight-talking assault on the degeneration of the American legal system, as well as the colorful memoir of a long, diverse legal career. Molloy's stories of his life in the law, using anecdotes supported by case and article citations, tell a disquieting tale of the proliferation of complexities that require the ever-more-costly services of lawyers, coupled with the court-made laws that can make it ever more difficult to punish offenders (e.g., exclusionary rule, Miranda warnings, separate trials for co-defendants in murder cases). One of Molloy's most important points is that the courts are making law, a right reserved to Congress by our Constitution, while maintaining that they are merely interpreting the Constitution. When Congress attempts to pull back from some of these court-made limitations - as when they enacted a law maintaining that voluntary confessions could be admissible even without a Miranda warning - the Supreme Court defeats their aim.
How could Molloy have gone along with some of this for so long? He asks this himself. Aside from his desire to do well, some of the reason surely is lawyers' inbred tendency to acquiesce to higher authority. If the Supremes say it's so, who is a mere superior court judge or trial lawyer to argue? I'm glad Molloy has lived long enough to argue. He's really personal about his objections and his frequent contempt for our highest court, but he makes a good case.
A Retired Lawyer & Judge Exposes Why Our Legal System Is So Messed Up.......2007-01-19
John F. Molloy, the author, spent over 40 years as a lawyer and judge in the U.S. His honest and critical(also of his own "selling out for the lust for money & power")insider insights from these two perspectives, provide the reader-citizen a well put, detailed history of what has gone wrong with our legal system, espec. over the last 60 or so years.
He gives understandable histories and details how and why, our initially great system of Law and its pursuit of Truth & Justice, has too often become primarily a way for lawyers and judges to enrich themselves financially, while forsaking its noble purpose.
Judges do this by re-interpreting existing laws, and creating new ones, and the complex "rules of the game", with the helpful "input" of lawyers trying cases before them. Mr. Molloy exposes the what, how, and why of what's gone wrong, and its impact on the moral & social fabric of our citizens. But he also offers some sensible suggestions for needed changes. This is an important, well written and worthy book for lawyers and citizens of conscience.
Wake up .......2006-01-07
This is the story of how practice of the law has been corrupted over time. Judge Molloy's colorful anecdotes kept me entertained and at other times I felt outraged at how our justice system has been perverted to serve the interests of lawyers instead of serving the interests of the public. This book is very readable and informative. I highly recommend it.
The most important book in years.......2006-01-07
The Fraternity is the most important book in years. As a former corporate executive, then business owner/CEO, I so appreciate reading the disturbing trend Judge Molloy details in the legal profession has increasingly threatened the economic health of our country. He accurately chronicles precedent setting case after case of this alarming devolution. All this deterioration has been to complicate and thereby fatten the pockets of trial lawyers in collusion with our judges.
Equally disquieting to all citizens is the effect in criminal trial law. More and more critical information is excluded from testimony to the point that jurors can longer make informed intelligent decisions. John Molloy is to be commended for these important revelations of unconscionable greed by the legal profession that has been so destructive to the legal profession.
This is a story from one of the country's great legal experts that must be read.
Customer Reviews:
Excelente.......2007-07-29
A bilingual reader.......2005-11-28
I was born here in the Unites States from hispanic origins. Since I read, speeak, and write fluently English and Spanish, I read the memories of Huber Matos and some of the critics of this book. I recommend this book; however, I also recommend reading the critics of his comrades involved in the same events at [...]
magnifico libro.......2005-02-07
Magnifico.

Book Description
Using two cross-country trips on Amtrak as her narrative vehicles, British writer Jenny Diski connects the humming rails, taking her into the heart of America with the track-like scars leading back to her own past. As in the highly acclaimed Skating to Antarctica, Diski has created a seamless and seemingly effortless amalgam of reflections and revelation in a unique combination of travelogue and memoir.
Customer Reviews:
Well worth the read.......2006-07-02
I enjoyed Diski's self revelations and conversations with Americans on her cross country train trips. Yes, she clearly needs her cigarettes, and yes, she discusses what are clearly uncomfortable settings of her own mental health, but people, her writing is fantastic, and she creates a definite view of what train travel in the US is like these days. The reviewer that wonders what happened in certain legs of the journey needs to realize that yes, one does sleep on the train and certain geography is doomed to be missed in such a trip. THis book is less about the external geography and more about the internal geography the authors sees with her traveling compatriots across America. A wonderful look at Americans and at an author examining herself while traveling.
Very poor ý not a great Travel Book.......2004-04-19
This is the first book I've read by Jenni Diski, and I'm told it's not typical of her work. Certainly this was disappointing. It's not a conventional travelogue; in fact after 70 pages (25% of the book) she still hadn't got on the train!
Throughout she shows a brief insight into the personality of a dozen fellow passengers, but spends more time describing her problems gasping for a cigarette - hasn't she heard of nicotine patches?
In 8 lines (lines, not pages) she dismisses the whole journey from Portland Oregon to Sacramento to Denver to Albuquerque - and she doesn't even mention Nevada & Utah. Was she asleep the whole time? Then Arizona to New York via New Orleans vanishes in a dozen pages with 2 anecdotes. Was she bored? I'm surprised this won the Thomas Cook Travel Book Award?
I love travelling around America, but anyone could make it more exciting than this.
great trip.......2004-03-05
Jenny Diski clearly had a great trip and this book proves how even a 'non-traveler' can easily fall beneath the spell of long-distance train travel. Anyone planning to follow her example and journey around North America by train should also get hold of the excellent USA by Rail guidebook by John Pitt.
Is this a travel book or a memoir?.......2003-11-15
Subtitle to this book is "daydreaming and smoking around America with interruptions." The author travels by freighter from England to the U.S., then around the edges of the U.S. by train. She talks to people and records their conversations, most of which take place in the trains' smoking sections. None of them are particularly interesting. I read the whole book, but found it narcisistic (she admits she's a narcisist) full of tales about her days in English mental institutions, and not that entertaining. PLUS: get her an editor - please. It's Willie Mays, not Willie May. It's St.Paul-Minneapolis, not St. Paul's-Minneapolis. And the Mississippi river is certainly not in North Dakota. Then there are the English usages. What are pilchards? What is a tannoy? One person she meets says what he'd like to do with his life is "mess about on boats." No American would say that. If you want to read a good travel book, stick to Paul Theroux. If you want an interesting memoir look elsewhere.

Not Recommended........2003-08-16
Awful, absolutely awful. Don't have words in my vocabulary to describe how awful this book is. It is written in the strange style of a disciple writing about his beloved master. It doesn't seem to contain any research. It's mostly a comic book account of Garibaldi, without the pictures (except the cover sketch, done by the author himself).
Great Biography.......2002-05-08
This was one of the most interesting books on Italy i have ever read. Very enjoyable indeed! I would recommend it to alot of people interesting in Italy.
A pathetic piece of vanity publishing.......2000-12-12
Books published at the author's own expense really should contain a warning on the seller's site. If no reputable publisher will touch it, it's likely to be pretty bad. And this one is. I was unlucky enough to buy the book before it was reviewed on site. How I wish I'd waited! It truly is appalling. I didn't know enough about the subject to recognise the historical errors, but the bad grammar, patronising style and nauseating 'folksy' wisdom made reading it a very unpleasant experience.
Abysmal.......2000-07-21
LiPira is a renaissance man, according to the cover blurb he is a retired dentist who plays golf. Unfortunately he's not much of a historian. You wouldn't want a historian to drill your teeth, and as "Garibaldi" demonstrates, it's probably not a good idea to have a dentist write your biographies. I was suckered by the two previous reviews, but after a dozen pages I realized that the author's mother and sister wrote them, because no discerning reader could call this book excellent. Among its many flaws:
Research: the bibliography lists eight works, none less than twenty years old, none apparently in Italian, and none primary sources. Its seems LiPira read a handful of biographies and decided to try his hand at it.
Tone: It reads like some misbegotten 1940s communist propaganda. Garibaldi is a "noble leader" who "must fulfill his destiny". Alternately the "true messiah", "megahero", "demigod" and, laughably, a "guru of libertarianism, so to speak". We read that a "swell of adoration built to a tidal wave of idolatry" and "The Neapolitans were awed by his invincibility". He is a great lover whose "wiry constitution enamored him to all in the boudoir". His troops were "feverish in their passion to begin this momentous invasion" and "follow their glorified hero to higher levels of achievement". Pretty steamy stuff.
Bad guys are "imperialists" and "royalists". Interesting since Garibaldi renounced republicanism in 1851 and spent his career fighting for a king and for a time was dictator of Sicily. LiPira resorts to marxy prose to demonstrate Garibaldi's appeal to "the masses", even criticizing merchants who disliked Garibaldi because he "impounds" their goods to feed his troops. Garibaldi was a brilliant general, but it's not necessary to disguise the fact that he was also an ambitious mercenary. One annoying riff is LiPira's strange failure to grasp the relationship between military and political power. He mewls about "political interference" and how "politics once again nullified the noble sacrifice of so many gallant men", without considering the political ends for which they were sacrificed. When Garibaldi once persisted in fighting after a war had ended, LiPira acts as though he was abandoned by conniving politicos. Perhaps the fact that Garibaldi disguised his lust for adventure with contradictory ideologies explains his pathological distrust for politicians. The book fails to engage in any real political analysis.
And it is often inaccurate: "Millions [in Marseilles] were dying each year" of cholera; "Guerrilla warfare was born in the nineteenth century"; characterizing ancient Rome as a society of "liberated people, ennobled men, and guardians of human rights". Italy "failed in its first attempt to join the League of Nations" in 1866. Once LiPira has Garibaldi retreating so as not to "pit Italians against Italians and lead to a civil war", while for fifteen years he has been fomenting civil war by leading his Italian troops against other Italians. The French had "forty cannons, forty-eight artillery pieces, and various howitzers" (howitzers are a type of cannon, and cannon a type of artillery - an odd error in a military biography). San Marino is "a small old republic", without comprehending that its tactical value to Garibaldi and the very reason that this small republic got to be an old republic is that it sits atop a mountain without good road access.
Grammar: apparently English syntax and usage aren't a part of the dental school curriculum. LiPira can't seem to get the hang of matching subject to verb: "weakness and fragility was evident". Readers will enjoy the inventive usages: "abstract poverty" (vice abject), "offshore" (vice onshore), "reactionaries" (vice revolutionaries), and "lie" as the past tense of "lie", as in "Garibaldi lie in a stupor".
Some phrases are nearly incomprehensible: "ethereal personification", "obvious casualties", "It took until June for the sailing of the Neapolitan army to depart", "his talented saber in hand", "Garibaldi presented the taking of Venice via Dalmatia and the Balkans but with governmental ties." in a battle, his "ammunition dwindled to an embarrassing minimum", "He was adamant in his belief that life is not for the privileged", "each town they passed was more friendly than the next". The death of Garibaldi's beloved wife's is described as "unwelcome". For good measure there are ethnic slurs: "subtle" Sicilians and "warlike Prussians".
Readers will get a kick out of the redundancies: "freedom and liberty", "violent battle", "due to his recuperative powers, he recovered.", his biography included an "episode from his life", "more incessant", "a ditch that served as a trench", "long two month voyage", "both fear-inspiring and terrifying", "aggressively attacked", those killed are "lost forever", "raves and adulation", "the royalist king", "disarray and disorder", and "prior history". LiPira is compelled to state the obvious: "Little did he know what the future had in store", an attack was "designed to disable the enemy and bring victory", he patiently explains that computers did not exist in 1807, and later that the Statue of Liberty (not yet built) "had not gained [its] place in history, as yet".
e.e. cummings once teased Warren Harding for writing a sentence with seven grammatical errors. LiPira has created the biographical equivalent, cramming all this into a mere 120 pages. So, while it reads like a vanity book published by a hobbyist writing in his den, at least it doesn't take very long. Oh, the worst, the very worst thing about this book is that Garibaldi's name is misspelled on the spine.
Excellent and insightful treatise on Garibaldi........1999-08-24
This is not just another biography on Garibaldi. The author covers the life and times of Garibaldi and the formation of Italy in a way that is interesting and informative. Dr. Lipari fills in the gaps left behind other noted writings on this subject. Material flows well. Tough to put down.

Hilarity from the Heart of Illinois.......2006-08-27
Most readers would find it incomprehensible that this literary masterpiece is only ranked #4,137,804 on the Amazon sales rating. Once the movie hits the silver screen (see previous review), this book will definitely rest among the top four million bestsellers. It deserves to be in the midst of the greatest-To Kill a Mockingbird, In Cold Blood, Helter Skelter, Murder on the Orient Express. Miller weaves a tome that is captivating, heartwarming, spellbinding and outrageously funny, as he tries to continually overcome the fate bestowed on him by "The Man " of Fulton County, Illinois. The description of each time he manages to escape yet another date with the executioner is wackier and funnier than the last! This is a must read for anyone compelled to commit a heinous crime in small town Illinois-and aspires to get away with it. His hand drawn illustrations are breathtaking. This five star masterpiece cries for a staring movie role for Tom Cruise as Lloyd in the 1950's, repeatedly eating last suppers, and trying to escape a final sit-down in Stateville's "Old Sparky".
