Book Description
Practical Data Analysis: Case Studies in Business Statistics is a collection of 75 class tested case studies for use in introductory business statistics and general statistics. All cases are drawn from real situations in a broad range of business, economic, and social science settings and include small and large data sets for analysis by students. The philosophy behind the package is to let the cases and data drive or supplement the course. Doing so provides three important opportunities for students and instructors: useful computing experience, hands-on activity, which is more motivating than the traditional course format, and a sense of realism about the use of statistics.

From the author: This column addresses several reader responses to "Career Rx" columns. Topics of concern include whether search consultants work with clients on organizational issues, how physician executives can get noticed, and why resumes are so important. These important reader questions are explored: (1) Search consultants seem hard on candidates--do they also tell organizations how to "shape up?"; (2) how does a physician executive achieve greater visibility as a leader to industry influentials?; and (3) why is a resume required by many organizations? Won't a CV do the job just as well?

Book Description
Thoroughly revised, updated, expanded, and reorganized to serve as a primary text for mathematics courses, Introduction to Set Theory, Third Edition covers the basics: relations, functions, orderings, finite, countable, and uncountable sets, and cardinal and ordinal numbers. It also provides five additional self-contained chapters, consolidates the material on real numbers into a single updated chapter affording flexibility in course design, supplies end-of-section problems, with hints, of varying degrees of difficulty, includes new material on normal forms and Goodstein sequences, and adds important recent ideas including filters, ultrafilters, closed unbounded and stationary sets, and partitions.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent contribution!.......2007-02-13
This is one of the best book on Set Theory in the market. The authors' exposition is highly appealing as well as clear and friendly. This is a modern Non-Naive Set Theory as against that of Halmos' famous book--Naive Set Theory. By the way, you probably don't know there is a companion book by Sigler 0387901930 Exercises in Set Theory which was an very petinent companion to both of the two famous books on Set Theory. can't miss it
Straightforward and clear.......2005-07-12
This is aimed at undergrads, the same as Enderton's _Elements of Set Theory_. I didn't read the whole thing, but it seemed more clear and cohesive than that text. This is the only book I've found that looks like a direct alternative for Enderton. I would say, though, that it doesn't have quite as much detail and it doesn't have the handwavy introductions that Enderton has in some parts.
Close to Perfect.......2004-04-13
This is pretty much the perfect introduction to set theory for someone having some familiarity with rigorous mathematics. The treatment is axiomatic but doesn't employ the usual logical formalism, everything is written in plain english. The book emphasizes the foundational character of set theory and shows how all the usual objects of mathematics can be developed using only sets. It also demonstrates the application of set theoretic methods to "ordinary" mathematics by giving complete proofs of some powerful theorems like the Hahn-Banach theorem in functional analysis.
The pace is leisurely with a close look at the details. The axiom of choice is used only when necessary and it's uses are highlighted. The exercises contain real meat but are broken up in handable pieces. They also give alternative approaches to topics treated in the main text. Solutions are not contained.
The last section is devoted to an outlook at more advanced set theory. The ideas of the constructible universe and of forcing are outlined, as far as that is possible on that level. There is also a discussion on candidates for additional axioms.
The reader will gain both insight into what set theory is and how powerful it is. There is no better book for the same audience.
The best text I had as a graduate student.......2001-09-30
One of the first classes I took as a graduate student in mathematics was in the foundations of mathematics. The topic was set theory and this was the text we used. There have been many times in my mathematical career that I have been grateful for the knowledge learned in the class and this is one of two course textbooks that I still regularly consult as a reference. It is an excellent introduction to the fundamentals of set theory and ordinal arithmetic and I heartily recommend this book to anyone teaching or learning the fundamentals of sets.
Book Description
In these six essays, award-winning author Wendell Berry considers the degeneration of language that is manifest throughout our culture, from poetry to politics, from conversation to advertising, and he shows how the ever widening cleft between words and their referents mirrors the increasing isolation of individuals from their communities and of their communities from the land. From the essay, Standing by Words, Berry writes, “Two epidemic illnesses of our time—upon both of which virtual industries of cures have been founded—are the disintegration of communities and the disintegration of persons. That these two are related (that private loneliness, for example, will necessarily accompany public confusion) is clear enough. What seems not so well understood, because not so much examined, is the relation between these disintegrations and the disintegration of language. My impression is that we have seen, for perhaps a hundred and fifty years, a gradual increase in language that is either meaningless or destructive of meaning. And I believe that this increasing unreliability of language parallels the increasing disintegration, over the same period, of persons and communities.” Out-of-print for more than fifteen years, Standing by Words offers a masterfully written argument for the literary tradition.

Book Description
The life of Count Harry Kessler (1868-1937), the famous Anglo-German art patron, writer, and activist, offers a vivid and engrossing perspective on the tumultuous transformation of art and politics that took place in modern Europe between 1890 and 1930. In the first half of his career Kessler was one of the most ardent and well-known champions of aesthetic modernism in Imperial Germany, becoming a friend and patron to pioneering artists and writers of his day, most notably French sculptor Aristide Maillol, Belgian architect Henry van de Velde, English theater designer Gordon Craig, and Austrian poet and playwright Hugo von Hofmannsthal and, in his capacity as director of the Museum of Arts and Crafts in Weimar and vice-president of the German Artists League, served as a spokesman and lightning rod for embattled modern art. In the aftermath of the First World War, in which he served as a soldier, propagandist, and secret agent, Kessler embarked on a public career as a committed internationalist and pacifist, a stance that led ultimately to his exile from Germany upon the Nazi seizure of power. Making use of the recently discovered portions of Kessler's extensive diaries, one of the most remarkable journals ever written, Laird Easton explains the reasons for this startling metamorphosis, showing for the first time the continuities between Kessler's prewar aestheticism and his postwar politics and highlighting his importance within the larger history of the rise of modern art and politics. This lively narrative, the first English-language biography of Harry Kessler, provides a rich and fascinating portrait of the man whom W. H. Auden called "a crown witness of our times."
Customer Reviews:
Intriguing story wonderfully told.......2002-10-30
This is truly a memorable book. Count Kessler's life story is fascinating and Laird Easton is the writer to tell it. You can sense his learning, his devotion to the discipline of history and the art of storytelling, and most of all his sheer enthusiasm and wonder on nearly every page. Read it to understand the modern world -- the world we all still live in, and in some ways are stuck in, despite the po-mo claims of some who would have it that we have moved on -- and read it, too, for the sake of curiosity and simple pleasure. If you're reading this review at all then presumably you're a person who hasn't forgotten these things.

A New Approach.......2006-02-18
This is an unique approach to a biographical study of the leaders as presented in this well researched book. To analyze these men (and woman) is to explain what caused them to be great leaders or tyrants. There is a great deal of previously unknown information which is very revealing to enable the reader to better understand their actions. We can only wait for the sequel which would surely include Clinton and George W. Bush.

Book Description
Christina Middlebrook was not quite fifty when she was told that a lump in her breast was not only malignant, but had already metastasized, and she had a fifty-percent chance of surviving more than two years. In her beautiful, unflinching memoir, Middlebrook conveys the physical and emotional ordeal of coming to terms with her own imminent death. Candid and courageous, Middlebrook's memoir honestly relates her story, which, unlike many books about illness that end in triumph, can offer no reassuring conclusion. In the tradition of William Styron's Darkness Visible, Seeing the Crab is a true and incredibly powerful story of facing the unthinkable with grace.
Customer Reviews:
Mirroring Me.......2002-03-24
This wonderful woman totally gets me, almost scarey. At the age of 28 I was diagnosised with stage 3 BC. I was told that I will not make it 5 years with my prognosis. I too did the horrid red devil in my standard first 6 monthsofchemo.ThenI did a Stem Cell(2-1-00)along with rads. I am two years out of treatment and going through the horrid scans and watching and waiting that she did. It is about time someone told it like it is. Those of us that are called so lovingly as premies...under the age of 40, are literally giving a death sentence, never to see our children grow up. I thank you Christina for opening the worlds eyes to the reality of this beast. Maybe our children never go through this!!!!!!
Lovingly,
Baby Girl
Unbound Truth About Cancer.......2000-07-29
This was a terrific book. I am not sure what inspired me to purchase "Seeing the Crab", but it honestly changed my life. I have been thinking about switching careers and pursuing medicine, and this book helped confirm it. Middlebrook was brutally honest about all of her various accounts with cancer. It gave a wonderful insight of what therapy is like, how important it is to have a strong support group of family and freinds, and the battle of everyday life with cancer. In my family, I have had two grandfathers die of lung cancer, and a third grandfather is now suffering from the same disease. Although the area in which the cancer is located is different, the treatment is more or less the same, as is the pain they go through. This book gave me such a deeper understanding for what my grandfather has been experiencing, and the knowledge of what to say when we are together. I thank Middlebrook for her honesty, since it is helping me in my own family situtions. I highly reccomend this book to anyone who has cancer or knows someone who does. It will really change the way you think and treat those with this disease.
A must-read book for friends, relatives........2000-07-21
I read this book to better understand what my sister is going through and what she may face in the future. Anyone with a friend or relative with advanced breast cancer should read it. We try to "minimize" what is happening to them, and we tell them to keep a positive attitude, and we deny the reality of the seriousness of the disease, and the outcome. We tell them they look good, and try to give them false hope of surviving cancer. As the author pointed out, this makes them very angry, as though we are discounting what is happening to them. We need to be there for them and to listen. Just because they are in treatment for this dreaded disease, it doesn't mean they will survive it. The author knew she would likely not survive, and that her treatments, as horrific as they were, were just "buying her more time." This was a sad, but "real" story. Very powerfully written. I could not put it down.
Riveting book that lends insight. Fascinating metaphors........2000-04-03
A good book for one who seeks to understand what it's like for someone facing cancer and its often hellish treatments. Middlebrook takes you inside the experience, to the heart of what it feels like for the "experiencer." I've never been afforded such a searing, close-in view, even after going through my own father's death from cancer. I wish I'd had this book then. Sometimes there is no right thing to say, but your presence alone can speak volumes. Middlebrook is a courageous warrior. But more than that. She gives hope that should we ever face such a diagnosis, we, like her, would be able to reach deep and tap unknown reserves of strength to face it--what else can we humans do? This is an often bitter and angry book, but it's beautifully written, uncompromisingly honest, and manages to be inspirational after all.
Refreshing.......1999-10-12
Finally a book about living with cancer that doesn't have a saccharine, happy ending. Middlebrook writes for the large number of cancer patients who don't necessarily have great diagnoses, and who aren't well-served by the current body of literature that emphasizes good outcomes. As she writes about how other people have such a hard time even *talking* about cancer, how one's own expectations and aspirations fundamentally change, and how difficult it is, day after day, to simply cope and manage and survive with the burden of an enormous life crisis, one feels like putting the book down and exulting, "Here's someone like me!"

This is the author's account of her struggle for life against stage IV metastatic breast cancer, which usually translates to a death sentence. The struggle, described with down-to-earth honesty and directness, is both horrifying and inspiring. Particularly grueling was the bone marrow transplant she went through in a last-ditch effort to save her life. Almost dead from huge doses of chemotherapy that destroyed her immune system along with the cancer cells, she had to stay in isolation for 25 days while her harvested bone marrow cells brought her back from the brink. Middlebrook survived a remarkable test of endurance.
Customer Reviews:
Too much drama.......2006-10-25
Cancer is a devastating, life-altering disease. However, this book is a little too dramatic and "victim-y" for me. I only got through a few chapters, up until the part where the author's 16 year old daughter fails her driver's test, and the author writes that she knows her daughter purposely failed the test so that she wouldn't have to drive her mother to doctor's appts and to run errands, thereby salvaging the one last thing her mother can still do for her while suffering from cancer. BS, she failed because she didn't know how to drive.
Please don't mistake me for being callous against someone with a life-threatening illness. I have lost family members to cancer and have a good chance to developing breast cancer in my lifetime. I just hope if I ever do, I can keep my sense of realism and fight with everything I have in me, instead of drowning in self-pity and "why-me's".
Seeing the Crab: A Memoir of Dying.......2003-01-29
This is a wonderful and inspirational book. It follows the story of a woman with cancer. Its a very deep story. The author makes you ask yourself if you can end with cancer. Christina is a very strong and admirable woman. As soon as you read it you will not want to put it down.
A guide to being real with beloveds who have cancer........1996-07-07
By describing her experience with illness so candidly,
Middlebrook offers a profound mirror for those of us who have
beloveds with cancer. I was able to see how my dread of this
disease, and of my best friend suffering and dying from it,
was keeping me from being authentic with her. I recommend
this book for anyone who has a loved one on the cancer
journey, when you are ready to get real.
An eloquent and chilling account of a battle with cancer........1996-05-23
Ms. Middlebrook is told in 1991 that she has Stage IV (terminal) breast cancer. Her memoir spares nothing. She is relentless and graphical in her descriptions of the disease and, most especially, its treatment. The account is powerful and very personal. Not just in the detailing of her experience with the disease and the dramatic and extreme treatments, but also in her sharing of her feelings about her interactions with friends, family members and strangers. Ms Middlebrook's prose is vivid and, I found, often moving. The reader gains a new appreciation for what it is like to come to grips with ones mortality. Despite the seeming grimness of the subject matter, the message is somehow uplifting while being totally honest about the ultimate outcome for the author
