    5 out of 5 stars It's Their Problem -- But It's Your Business........2000-10-03

Alcoholism, violence, addiction, depression. Not your typical topics in the corporate boardroom.

    Until now.

In his new book "Workplace Intervention," James Fearing, Ph.D. brings these issues out of the shadows and boldly presents a wake up call to corporate America: it's their problem, but it's your business.

Ignore employee addiction, et. al., at your own risk, because it's your business that has the most to lose when these [diseases] are left untreated. Dr. Fearing convincingly informs us that "the terrible waste of human potential...the loss in productivity, profits, and overall performance is staggering -- topping $102 billion in 1995."

"But we have an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) onsite", the HR Director exclaims, "and we've been conducting brown bag seminars on these topics for years. Ah, if only it were that easy.

Dr. Fearing ("America's Crisis Doctor") compellingly suggests that companies need to take more immediate ownership and action in this area. "They need to become better informed about employee problems, intervention strategies, and the treatment and recovery process."

That is basically what his book is all about: "preparing companies to recognize the problem of addiction, learn effective intervention techniques, and help addicted employees reclaim their lives and livelihoods."

In clear and consise language, Fearing teaches the reader to recognize various forms of addiction and related illnesses. He then describes, in great detail, the intervention process and helps dispel many of its myths and mysteries. I especially liked his unique "carefrontation" approach, designed to educate and empower the employee's significant others, allowing them to adopt an informed, firm, and fair stance in the face of extreme adversity and resistance.

"Workplace Intervention" also discusses the treatment and recovery process in a way that will help concerned persons make intelligent choices all along the continuum of care.

I also found the discussion of legal issues, additional mental health concerns, and preventing workplace violence especially informative. And I have yet to come across a more extensive resource guide consisting of groups, agencies, organizations, and associations that can be contacted for further assistance with these matters.

Bottom line: If you are a business executive, director or manager, I strongly recommend that you read this book. And please do it soon, before yet another one of your troubled employees bottoms out.

          Book Description

The first book on Modelica, a modeling language that can be used to simulate both continuous and discrete behavior, Introduction to Physical Modeling with Modelica provides the necessary background to develop Modelica models of almost any physical system. The author starts with basic differential equations from several engineering domains and describes how these equations can be used to create reusable component models. Next, he describes techniques for modeling complex non-linear behavior, exploiting the powerful array handling features and mixing continuous and discrete behavior. The second part of the book focuses on effective use of all the language features provided by the Modelica modeling language. This includes, among other things, discussions on maximizing the reusability of component models being developed, managing the model development process, and making models as computationally efficient as possible. Introduction to Physical Modeling with Modelica includes a companion CD-ROM with the Modelica source code for all examples as well as an evaluation copy of Dymola. Using Dymola, readers can immediately begin to explore the dynamics of the models included with the book or to develop their own models. Nearly 100 examples of mechanical, electrical, biological, chemical, thermal and hydraulic models are included. Introduction to Physical Modeling with Modelica will be of interest to all professional engineers and university researchers developing physical models. Students studying control system development or modeling of physical systems will also find it useful.

3 out of 5 stars Good introductory book.......2005-06-13

The book is well structured and have many interesting examples. The book is a good start point for anyone who wants to start learning Modelica. The price is in my opinion a little bit expensive since the book is based on Modelica 1.6 language specification and the latest spec is 2.2 with some relevant changes.

          5 out of 5 stars Hands-on experience with Modelica.......2001-12-11

One of the weakest points of the new object-oriented modelling language Modelica was the lack of an introduction to help engineers and scientists understand the differences to other modelling concepts. Using many examples from the automotive industry, electrical, mechanical and chemical engineering this book explains the concept of physical modelling, i. e. using basic laws to describe physical systems, and shows how to formulate these principles in Modelica. The Modelica language is presented in a series of examples that gradually grow more complex. The companion CD contains the complete source code of the examples and a working version of the commercial tool Dymola. The reader can thus start with the given examples and modify them to get some practise with the tool and the language.

The emphasis of the presentation is on the engineering task of building a model, for more theoretical questions references are given.

I like this book because of it's hands-on approach. It gives a comprehensive introduction to physical modeling and the new language Modelica and I can recommend it to engineers and scientists who have to create or use models of physical systems.

3 out of 5 stars Dull, but Informative.......2002-12-22

John Greenya sets out to write a biography of Justice Thomas without making a judgement one way or the other. He pretty much manages to do that, however the story seems to lack any emotion at all.

This is an almost impossible task as the early life of Justice Thomas is alive with passion. The hearings against him alive with the same and the voice of his detractors and his defenders alike brim with this emotion.

Greenya doesn't seem to want to make a decision. He lets the participants and the record do most of the talking. His final chapter allows people involved and uninvolved make their cases however he refuses to draw any conclusions. This might be a desision made in order to be fair (and for the most part he shows respect for both sides of the story) but it makes for a less interesting book.

The story of Thomas' early life and the story of the Hearings went fast and read well, they had what most of the book lacked, but that was due to the drama inherant in the facts, not the writers writing.

I would suggest reading this volume first before reading the acolates of the right or the birckbats of the left, in that sense it is a useful book.

This book may deserve a better rating than I gave it. Greenya is not trying to be Bernard Cornwell but I find I just can't do better than what I have.

            2 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing.......2002-06-30

I decided to read this book after coming across Mr. Greenya giving an informal talk about his book on C-Span in Spring 2002. Listening to Mr. Greenya talk, although he was a rather dull and unorganized speaker, I had hope that his book would be as neutral a biography as possible. Mr. Greenya was very open in acknowledging that the Right and Left are very passionate when it comes to Clarence Thomas and that there is rarely any middle. This is true, but Mr. Greenya made it seem that he may be one of the rare few capable of standing in that middle ground. Sadly, he's not.

The book opens on the very first page with the view of Thomas's confirmation hearings through the perspective of the porn-store owner that alleges to have sold videos to Judge Thomas. Greenya writes that this owner was "excited" that one of "his customers" was being nominated to the Supreme Court. Yeah... I bet.

After that wonderful introduction, the book truly begins with Thomas's impoverished childhood in Pin Point, Georgia. Mr. Greenya moves quickly through this time period, as well as most of Thomas's young adult and college days. The majority of the 300-page book is taken up by quotes and opinions on Thomas, mostly concerning the Anita Hill ordeal and Thomas's rulings as a Supreme Court Justice. In these cases, the quotes opposing Thomas are without fail longer and preceding the quotes from the far fewer sources Mr. Greenya uses who are on Thomas's side. Mr. Greenya even goes so far as to uncritically reference the words of people such as Nan Aron and Eliot Minceberg of People for the American Way, an ultra-Left lobbyist group.

Mr. Greenya does not seem like a vindictive or vitriolic man, like many (not all, of course) of the people who attack Clarence Thomas for anything he does. But he is clearly slanted to a certain political side not in agreement with Clarence Thomas's views. In prefacing the lengthy passage he uses from Sarah Weddington, the lawyer who successfully argued the Roe v. Wade case, Mr. Greenya characterizes her as "a fierce protector of the right she worked so hard to win for all American women..." Political opinions aside, it is simple fact that there are tens of millions of American women who do not consider legalized abortion to be any "right" that human beings have, no matter what the law says... rather, they consider it morally appalling. In this simplistic statement Mr. Greenya gives away his political persuasion more than he does at any other point in this book. His explanation of what it means to "bork" a judge is also astoundingly false, according to the widely held understanding of the word, even as defined by Microsoft's Encarta dictionary, for one. Mr. Greenya almost seems to be painfully twisting things to meet an agenda at times.

I give the book 2 stars because Clarence Thomas rejected several requests, rightfully so, by Mr. Greenya to be interviewed for this book. I'm sure Judge Thomas's friends and fellow conservatives also knew what to expect and turned down Mr. Greenya as well, which had to be a major factor, beyond his control, in Mr. Greenya's lack of qualified, pro-Thomas sources throughout the book. But the slant and the errors are simply inexcusable in a purportedly neutral book, and accompanied with a boring narrative, this makes for one of the worst "biographies" I have ever read.

5 out of 5 stars Silent Justice by John Greenya.......2002-05-02

Silent Justice is a fascinating account of the personal and political development of a man who now holds one of the most influential positions in our nation, a man about whom people have very strong feelings ranging from admiration and respect to outright disdain. Although I personally disagree with Justice Thomas's positions on many issues, a friend recommended this book because of its keen perceptions of the character of a man who has the potential to influence all of our lives for years to come. As it turned out, I enjoyed the book immensely.

Silent Justice is an unusually unbiased account compared with much that has been written about Thomas. Although the book allowed me to draw my own conclusions, I found John Greenya's treatment of the ways in which Thomas's opinions and style changed from his college days and throughout his years at the Equal Employment Opportunities commission and on the Federal bench to be particularly interesting. In addition, the description of Thomas's early life and the culture he grew up in provides a necessary backdrop for understanding his later life. The skillful blending of Thomas's professional and personal struggles, as well as the author's insights into the special challenges inherent in being a black man functioning at the upper levels of society and government is part of what makes this book so interesting.

I would definitely recommend Silent Justice to anyone who wants to understand what makes Thomas tick or who wants a greater perspective on the various ways people achieve power and prestige in American government and society.

5 out of 5 stars Give Justice Thomas A Chance -- and This Book As Well.......2002-01-22

In the foreword to his book, Washington writer John Greenya wryly recounts the disdain with which friends and other persons greeted the news that he was writing a biography of Justice Clarence Thomas. Much of this disgust came from political liberals, who already knew what they wished to know about Justice Thomas, and who cared naught about anything else. 'Tis a a pity, that closed minds are so prevalent in modern political Washington. In reality, Justice Thomas' story is an up-from-the-muck saga of a kid from rural Georgia who grew up speaking an Island dialect -- unsureness of speech is the chief reason he seldom asks questions during SCOTUS sessions -- and went through Yale, perhaps America's toughest law school. The value of Greenya's book is that he reports, rather than lectures, and one comes away from Silent Justice with a better understanding of a man condemned to carry into history the qualifier "the controversial Justice Thomas." Steve Weinberg, who reviewed Silent Justice for The Legal Times, concluded, "For potential readers who have already decided beyond all doubt that Thomas is either a hero or a villain, this book will be maddening. for potential readers who have strong opinions about Thomas but are willing to revise those opinions on the basis of new evidence, this book will be revalatory." Amen

            Book Description

Countless biographers have tried to unveil the real Jean-Paul Sartre without his consent or cooperation. Only John Gerassi—the "non-godson" of Sartre, an atheist—was honored with the responsibility of being Sartre's official biographer. After drafting the commission with Sartre on the back of a menu at La Coupole, Gerassi recorded over one hundred hours of interviews with him between 1974 and 1979, and another hundred hours with Sartre's friends, colleagues, and enemies. Gerassi also immersed himself in Sartre's literary, philosophical, and personal writings. Gerassi had access to all of Sartre's files, unpublished manuscripts, and extensive notes for planned but undelivered lectures. Simone de Beauvoir gave many of Sartre's unpublished letters to Gerassi as well. Sartre trusted the integrity of Gerassi so completely that he considered Gerassi's biography to be the continuation of his own autobiography, Les mots. As a personal friend, Gerassi writes with advantages shared by no other biographer of Sartre.

5 out of 5 stars a great bio of one of the greats of the 20th C........2004-04-01

I don't know what's wrong with the next reviewer (I suspect it's Anne Coulter with a fake moustache- Hi Anne!). Yes, Sarte supported some bad people, and some not so worthy causes- but then if we are to judge the Soviets and China for their victims- does that mean turning a blind eye to the countless dead in Argentina, Guatemala, Chile, El salvador, Columbia, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Iran, and God knows how manyother places where regimes were overturned and dictators installed and bombs dropped either with US Aid/money/training or directly by us.

Choose your evils. Sartre had more gumption than most when it came to calling out his age on its evils. Are we to blame him because, post-WWII he turned away from a non-poitical stance and embraced a left-wing ideology?

This is a short, consise bio, and I think the best on the market of its kind. If you are looking to round out your perception of this enigmatic thinker- pick up a copy!

When you read over a hundred books a year like I do, you sometimes find yourself looking for "bargain" books to save a few bucks, especially if the subject is rather controversial. Who'd have thought you could find yourself feeling that you overpaid for a book that cost $2? This is such a book. Sartre is a phase that most kids go thru, like pimples, before they grow up and understand the world. Yes, we are here a short time and then we die. Get over it.
For Gerassi, a noted leftist, this book is more of an admission that he, like his friend Sartre, never grew up. While it is hard to read this book and not feel sorry for someone who will die an adolescent, I feel even worse knowing that the kind of nonsense Gerassi expounds about his fellow traveler in this book is probably standard fare dished out to the unsuspecting innocents in his political science classes at CUNY. What can you say about a book which fawns over a person like Sartre, whose entire life consisted of his fawning over mass murderers and criminals of the left? This book is a classic example of leftist snobbery, where Stalin's extermination of millions of Georgians, Ukrainians and others by starvation is ignored and the extermination of millions of Jews by an equally evil totalitarian criminal like Hitler is condemned. Sartre's equal admiration of mass murderers like Mao and Castro is made to look "enlightened" when it is simply outrageous. The only redeeming part of the book is that you can understand Sartre's narcissism and self-loathing to be possibly attributable to his warped childhood and excessive use of drugs and alcohol. I'd be nauseated and depressed too if I were as screwed up as he was.
What an unfortunate end of being and nothingness for a poor, naked, innocent little tree to give up its life to provide the paper this book was printed on. But maybe it will have a happier end and become a doorstop or some other higher purpose.

4 out of 5 stars Well- it's THE AUTHORIZED BIO... Sartre chose Gerassi.......2004-01-24

One of the best sartre bios out there (and the official one). Volume One- It has the dual fortune of being both a quick read and a decent intro to Sartre's life and thought. It also calls him on his *ish*, which is rare for biographers. (Gerassi's parents were Spanish -ok his mom wasn't but married into it- friends of Sartre and Simone De Beauvoir, in fact both his mother and father as well as Jean hismelf became the basis for characters in sartre's 'Roads to Freedom' Series of novels).

While not as massive a compendium as the Annnie Cohen-Solal bio, this has much to reccommend it. In fact, preciseley that it is not the massive compendium reccommends it in my eyes. Who has time for that but the intellectual janitors in their ivory towers? Gerassi knows Sarte's works quite well, but primarily- he knew the man himself and he gives interesting insights into many anecdotes and ideas.

My feelings towards Sartre tend to be passionately ambivalent. I don't care for his philosophy, which will always be 'cool' to the pseudo-sophisticates who don't even possess a thorough grasp of it... I was enchanted with him in my teens mainly because of his persuasive skill with words (the man was an extraordinary wordsmith), and I will always be deeply enamored of his novels. 'nausea,' alone I feel should secure his place in the history of literature.

There are tons of works on Sartre purporting to unveil his thought and life. Most of the ones I've read are inadequate- they come off as hack-kneyed and reactionary, and try to compensate for their faults with an over-abundance of fruitless linguistic play that goes nowhere- does nothing, or they take him to task overly for a variety of his personal failings (and there are plenty from which to choose). Few thinkers and biographers attempt to tackle the man as a writer and an activist... Few try to work with Sartre's all-too-human imperfections and put them into context.

...And few see any kind of logic in Sarte's later years but Gerassi, because of his close involvement with both Sartre and De Beauvior, is able to show the heart and soul of the man at work, especially in his darker years (involvement with revolutionary Maoists and loss of his sight and mental faculties, most likely due to his extensive use of drugs, ampetamines, alchohol etc in his 30s and 40s)...

Stil, Sartre is a writeer and thinker worth exploring, and he was one of the more interesting men of his time. If you are at all interested in learning more about this maddening intellectual of the 20th C- this is a fine place to start. Gerassi was chosen by sartre mainly because he was not an acolyte- he had his own opinions and had frequent arguments (some quite vitriolic) with J.P. A couple of which gerassi recounts.

The book has a lot of meat. Most don't. Let me reiterate that is written cearly and concisely- a quality MUCH LACKING in most books of this kind, and a quality that I value highly, outside of experimental fiction... I have read this a couple times, always enjoy it, find it interesting and illuminating.

just one man's five cents, as always.

            Book Description

Newlyweds Sallie Wagner and Bill Lippincott came to the Navajo Reservation in 1938. Before they knew it, they owned a trading post at Wide Ruins, Arizona. The years they spent there were the best of their lives, and this lively, honest memoir recalls them in detail. Trading post life combined business with the kinds of experiences generally associated with anthropological field work. Like many traders, Sallie Wagner influenced the weavers whose rugs she purchased. She was one of the traders who persuaded weavers to use vegetal dyes, leaving a permanent legacy in Navajo weaving. Tourists discovered Indian reservations in the 1930s, and the Lippincotts were visited often by friends and strangers alike, many unable to navigate reservation roads.

5 out of 5 stars BEST book on Navajo Traders.......2002-06-16

"Wide Ruins" is a wonderful reading experience on an interesting topic. Sallie Wagner weaves a personal tale of her experiences as the trader at Wide Ruins, Arizona, in the 1940's. Her story progresses quickly and she seems to provide enough detail of her experiences without lingering too long on any one topic. She vividly describes the role of the trading post and of the traders. The trading post was a general store, a pawn shop, and a safety deposit box. The traders were resourceful businessmen who could conduct business without any actual money trading hands. They were esteemed residents who helped the Navajo people survive a difficult time in America's history.

This memoir is a significant piece of literature because it was written by one who actually lived in a world that few non-Navajos ever get to see. She decribes the Navajo people and the Navajo culture in a way that makes their time and place real. It is not an academic study by a distant scholar of the culture. It is a personal account of a world that no longer exists, and as such, it is a treasure. I would also recommend "Navajo Trader" by Cladwell Richardson in addition to "Wide Ruins".

            Book Description

For two and a half years, Ari Fleischer served as the official liaison between the White House and members of the press, acting as the voice of President George W. Bush.

In Taking Heat, Fleischer goes behind-the-scenes in the West Wing, giving his perspectives on:

            • September 11, 2001, its aftermath, and the anthrax scare • The pressure-filled buildup to the war in Iraq and the President's thoughts as the war began • The White House press corps, who they are, and how they report the news

Fleischer believes that the press has a bias in Washington -- It's not a question of partisanship or press driven ideology. It's a focus on conflict they can attach to the President. The White House press corps are masters of the devil's advocate. Fleischer's job was to calmly field their questions, no matter how pointed. He calls the press a tough, sharp, skeptical group. They call him tight-lipped and secretive. But at the end of the day, they had a bond.

Taking Heat is an introspective and analytical exploration of the major political events in the first half of the Bush administration, as well as the candid observations of a professional who stood in the bright lights of the world stage.

            3 out of 5 stars IT'S HIS TURN NOW.......2005-03-09

You probably knew before listening that this would not be an unbiased view. Hearing that he sometimes felt like a "pinata" reinforces this opinion. Well, everyone's entitled to have their say and so this is Ari Fleischer's take and now it's his turn.

Whether one agrees with his views or not, Fleischer served as the White House press secretary during some of our country's most momentous days, from 9/11, the prelude to the war in Iraq, and more.

The author/reader has no love for the press and reiterates what he feels are some of their more frigid exchanges. He has high praise for his former boss, Mr. Bush, extolling his leadership abilities. No surprises here.

While not a seasoned actor (some may take issue with that), he gives a straightforward, listenable reading of his story. Condemn him or praise him, his story is sure to be fodder for debate, diatribe, and discussion.

              Book Description

While recovering from a double mastectomy, journalist Jeneva Leopold seeks solitude and healing at her uncle's idle gold mine in the sagebrush desert of Eastern Oregon. Hiking the rocky ridges, swimming in the old mining pond, and ignoring the outside world save for occasional letters, Jeneva gains strength and a new will to live.

As her interest in life returns, so do Jeneva's journalistic habits. And though the locals are at first puzzeled by all of her questions, she soon gets to know a young woman rancher, various miners, a quirky old artifact hunter, and an itinerant priest and medieval scholar. These people and other colorful locals give her the inside story on living in the harsh landscape of sagebrush and coyotes and revealing how the old west is changing under new economics and regulation.

But the Oregon desert is also a place of secrets. The more Jeneva talks with the locals, the more she wonders about her uncle's mysterious disappearance. Why did her uncle and her mother stop talking so many years ago? Does she know more than she is acknowledging? The murder of a young miner sends her on a quest for answers, leading her to an elderly woman artist living in a converted chicken house, a tongue-tied funeral home owner, and a swashbuckling sheriff with rule-bending tendencies.

The appalling business she uncovers shocks the region and nearly claims her life, but it also brings closure to an old family misunderstanding and the enigma of her uncle's fate.

              5 out of 5 stars A Strong Woman in a Superb Setting.......2007-08-06

I loved "Death Pans Out." I totally identified with heroine Jeneva Leopold. Author Ashna Graves says on her Web site that Eastern publishers told her no woman would ever willingly live alone in an isolated, abandoned miner's cabin. Wrong! I envied Jeneva's description of her lifestyle in Eastern Oregon near the Idaho border and wished I could spend a summer there. Perhaps I felt such a resonance with Ms Graves' book because my contemporary romances are set in the Northwest: Idaho and Washington, Big Bad Wolfe and "Special Delivery."

4 out of 5 stars A Winning Mix of Mystery and Spirituality.......2007-06-26

Many mysteries follow a well-known formula as they spin their plots, but Death Pans Out succeeds not only in telling a superb, well-crafted story but also in exploring its characters' spiritual sides. This is an unhurried mystery, which allows Graves ample time to dig deeply into the life of her protagonist, a depressed woman who is recovering from cancer. Neva's investigation becomes part of her own healing process as she gradually re-emerges into the world and re-connects with other people. While I enjoy many mysteries, Death Pans Out moves beyond a "good mystery" into a book that is truly satisfying.

3 out of 5 stars Great plot but it moves too slow........2007-05-19

Some great character development. Example: Skipper Dooley who lives in a camper. Darla Steadman the mysterious horsewoman. I look forward in reading Ashna Grave's next novel. She has talent but needs to raze up her story lines.

Reviewed by Debra Gaynor for Reader Views (11/06)

Uncle Matthew's cabin is empty; he owned a cabin and a gold mine, but he simply disappeared with no trace. Neva needs a place to recover from breast cancer, a place of solitude, a place where she can heal. The abandoned cabin seems the perfect spot. After three weeks of hiking and swimming she is golden brown from the sun and she's becoming more comfortable with her body. The scars are still pink but they are healing.

Skippy Dooley shatters her solitude when he arrives with the announcement that he and his German Shepherd Cayuse will be camping at the creek near the cabin. He knew she didn't trust him and the feeling was mutual.

Things are not always as they seem. Oregon's desert holds secrets, some of which are deadly.

From the moment I read the first page I was hooked. The characters are so real. Neva is not a young woman; she's the kind of woman that will appeal to many of us that no longer consider ourselves young. Neva has faced struggles in her life--raising a child alone, facing breast cancer and chemo have made her stronger. She is a woman that we can relate to, cheer for and like. Suspicion surrounds all the other characters in the book. You want to shout watch your back Neva! The plot is extremely interesting and very well written. Eagerly I turned page after page escaping into the mountain hikes along with Neva, awaiting the adventure that lay ahead. "Death Pans Out" has it all, suspense, thrill, romance, and a good story. I highly recommend this book. Ashna Graves, I expect your name to be on the bestseller list and the tips of reader's tongues.

5 out of 5 stars terrific investigative thriller .......2007-03-10

Her mortality hammered at her mental well-being from two fronts. Forty-five years old Willamette Current reporter Jeneva "Neva" Leopold's mother recently died while she battles breast cancer with a double mastectomy. Needing to emotionally recover perhaps more than physical, Neva hides at the cabin of her Uncle Matthew Burt, who went missing fifteen years ago in desert town Billie Creek, Oregon.

Besides healthy outdoor activity, Neva keeps her mind off of the stress of grief and cancer by investigating her uncle's disappearance after he claimed a gold mine and why he and her mom abruptly stopped talking to one another. Neva questions the locals, but soon uncovers the corpse of miner Roy DeRoos. Another miner whom Neva befriended Reese Cotter is accused of the homicide; an allegation that the newcomer refuses to accept as true. However, as she keeps digging, Neva finds strange phenomena while someone wants her to cease and desist or else.

This is a terrific investigative thriller whose setting, the Oregonian desert, adds suspense to the tale. Neva is a fine person who turns to her experience and skill (inquiries) to help her regain a lust for life after taking two emotional blasts. The locals add regional eccentricities to a delightful "cold case" mystery, but Neva is the headline star of Ashna Graves' DEATH PANS OUT.

Window boxes no longer must be the sister of the white picket fence. Calling such diverse receptacles as pumpkins, gourds, hats, a broken earthen pot, and even eggshells to service, authors James Cramer and Dean Johnson, in Window Boxes: Indoors and Out, redefine the concept of windowbox, and generate a lot of beautiful ideas in the process.

Window boxes can serve many purposes, from homes for a kitchen herb garden to grand, overspilling fountains of trailing plants and flowers. And when there's a paucity of garden real estate, lack of time to tend a full-size garden plot, or an off-season hankering to simply grow something, window boxes provide creative outlets and solutions. Watching a forced amaryllis gracefully bloom in an antique planter in January or starting seedlings in a copper box inside a sunny window in early spring can quell the gardening jones of many a hibernating green thumb and help get a jump on the growing season.

Along with ideas for window-box plantings for every season and many holidays, from May Day boxes popping with pansies and lilies to Christmas boxes fragrant with tiny pine trees and demure snowdrops, Cramer and Johnson also detail how to make and decorate many boxes (although beginners may need more detailed instructions than the brief ones given here), including a copper box, a Victorian box, a terrarium box, harvest boxes, and many more. With this helpful, evocatively photographed handbook and an open mind, creating window boxes will become part of the gardener's and the interior designer's repertoire all year round. --Stefanie Durbin

              Book Description

Container gardening is one of the hottest trends today. Why? Because the recent availability of plants with great genetics makes container gardening a sure thing for everyone. Then there's the market--it's full of containers that are low cost and low maintenance but have high visual appeal. And finally there are the container gardens themselves, which are easier to maintain than in-ground gardens, especially during drought years. Window Boxes offers dozens of inventive, innovative ideas for window box gardens. Once thought possible during only the warm spring and summer months, the art of creating (and the pleasure of admiring) window boxes can now be enjoyed every month of the year. Moving season by season, Cramer and Johnson show you how to use interesting indoor and outdoor containers and bold plant mixes that will keep your home colorful and visually stimulating all year round. Every gardener will appreciate the authors' inspired ideas and hard-working advice, as well as the dazzling full-color photographs in these pages. Window Boxes is a one-of-a-kind handbook that combines container gardening with flower arranging so that you can create glorious mini-gardens for outside and inside your home.

                      Product Description

To Mary Lou and her husband, Carl, “custody suit” was a term they had heard, but not thought about much.

Then one day, it happened to them. At her sister’s dying wish, Mary Lou Jones took in three of her children. After the two older children willingly left to live with a foster family, they used the judicial system to force their much younger brother, Doug, to join them. What follows is a long, fierce struggle staged by Mary Lou and Carl to regain custody of Doug and remove him from the crowded foster home where he experiences neglect and abuse.

This is the story of an average American family – a family who found itself powerless to direct its own destiny against a corrupt and uncaring judicial system. What happened to them can happen to any one of us, no matter how innocent and caring we are.
