Public Policy and the Practice and Problems of Accounting.
Ahmed Belkaoui Manufacturer: Quorum Books ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0899301053 |
Book Description
Belkaoui offers a critical analysis of accounting and the societal problems the profession faces. The roles played by accountants and auditors, the standard-setting and oversight processes, the history, function, and current status of the discipline itself--all are treated systematically and with candor. Clarifying our understanding of what is wrong and what is right with accounting in the context of public interest, the author probes questions of public policy and shows where correction, standardization, and legislation are needed. He reviews solutions advanced by the courts, the Internal Revenue Service, the Securities and Exchange Commission, and researchers in other fields, then offers his own constructive suggestions.

Large Eddy Simulation for Incompressible Flows: An Introduction (Scientific Computation)
P. Sagaut Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
Accessories:
ASIN: 3540263446 |
Book Description
The only one of its kind devoted entirely to the subject, Large Eddy Simulation presents a comprehensive account and a unified view of this young but very rich discipline. LES is the only efficient technique for approaching high Reynolds numbers when simulating industrial, natural or experimental configurations. The author concentrates on incompressible fluids and chooses topics well to treat both the mathematical ideas and the applications with care. The book addresses researchers as well as graduate students and engineers. The second edition was a greatly enriched version motivated both by the increasing theoretical interest in LES and the increasing number of applications. Two entirely new chapters were devoted to the coupling of LES with multiresolution multidomain techniques and to the new hybrid approaches that relate the LES procedures to the classical statistical methods based on the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations.
This 3rd edition adds various sections to the text like a careful error analysis, on filtered density function models and multiscale models. It also contains two new chapters on the prediction of scalars using LES which are of considerable interest for engineering and geophysical modeling. The part on geophysical flow has much to offer on a critical current issue.

Large Eddy Simulation of Turbulent Incompressible Flows: Analytical and Numerical Results for a Class of LES Models (Lecture Notes in Computational Science and Engineering)
Volker John Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 3540406433 |
Book Description
Large eddy simulation (LES) seeks to simulate the large structures of a turbulent flow. This is the first monograph which considers LES from a mathematical point of view. It concentrates on LES models for which mathematical and numerical analysis is already available and on related LES models. Most of the available analysis is given in detail, the implementation of the LES models into a finite element code is described, the efficient solution of the discrete systems is discussed and numerical studies with the considered LES models are presented.

Shooting the Moon: The True Story of an American Manhunt Unlike Any Other, Ever
David Harris Manufacturer: Back Bay Books ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:

Amazon.com
There's no shortage of books on the 1989 U.S. invasion of Panama, which resulted in the capture of Manuel Antonio Noriega. Yet Shooting the Moon may be the most entertaining, as author David Harris blends the genres of legal thriller and true crime to produce a lively account of how and why the federal government decided to haul in the Panamanian strongman. It's an extraordinary story: "Just once in its 225 years of formal national existence has the United States ever invaded another country and carried its ruler back to the United States to face trial and imprisonment for violations of American law committed on that ruler's own native foreign turf." In large part, Shooting the Moon is the tale of the creative investigators and lawyers who made the case against Noriega. There's plenty of politics, too, with parts played by the first President Bush, Oliver North, and Eliot Abrams. Readers will also learn much about the world of drug smuggling in the 1980s, from the bureaucratic workings of the federal Drug Enforcement Agency to the operations of Colombia's cocaine-peddling Medellin cartel. The book screeches to a halt just as the invasion gets underway--the military effort and Noriega's actual arrest are described in cursory fashion, taking up just a few pages at the end. Harris primarily focuses on the legal and political aspects of the case as they developed in Miami (where the case against Noriega was built) and Washington (where the powers that be called the shots).Readers may need a few pages to get used to Harris's gonzo style--the first sentence of the book runs a whole paragraph, and his prose sometimes seems more suited for the spoken word than the written one--but it's worth the effort. Harris is an evocative writer; he describes Noriega's famous countenance as "a face that looks like somebody lit it on fire and then extinguished the blaze with an ice pick." For readers who crave narrative detail, this is a good yarn. --John J. Miller

Thoroughly Enjoyable.......2002-01-29
The author manages to interject plenty of humor into his self-deprecating and intelligent writing style and in doing so manages to give the reader a fresh perspective and stimulate thought about things that you may think you've already made up your mind about.
Mr. Bouldrey manages to be funny, intelligent and entertaining without resorting to tired schtick and reader manipulation and that's a very good thing.
Laughed so hard I got a nose-bleed.......2001-11-15
Monster shows really well how "macho" and "sissy" behavior are just two sides of the same coin. This was a fun book to read, and funny! LOVED the piece on wrestling! And in between the laughs are so many truthful zingers about America's culture of macho. Great book.
