Boiling down all the information about action learning into useful action steps is difficult. Dilworth and Willis managed to accomplish that task, however. The book strikes a balance between prevailing thought / theories and examples of real world application. The language is a bit academic at times; take the time to read the book, though. It's worth the effort.

Action Learning is one of the most powerful and most misunderstood developmental tools available to learning professionals today. I purchased this book while planning a Tea Party. The statement "15 seasonal Tea Parties" on the front of the book is misrepresentative of the actual contents. This book is focused more on the art of Tea drinking and Relaxation techniques and suggestions than directions on how to conduct a Tea Party. The back cover of the book is more properly representative when it states "you'll find the perfect way to enjoy the moment". It is a Zen Tea focus, not serve 20 people Tea and Crumpets for your mother's birthday focus.

Governor Edmund G. Pat Brown The Democratic Party in CA.......2005-09-07

Ethan Rarick has written a great biography of a man who was to be one of the most well known of California Governors.Edmund G. "Pat" Brown came on the political scene as DA of San Francisco County. He would follow the path of Earl Warren as State Attorney General and then Governor. Brown in 1959 became only the second Democrat elected governor in the 20th Century; Culbert L. Olson served 1939-1943. "Pat" Brown picked the right time to run for governor when US Senator William F. Knowland figured to use the California governorship as a stepping stone to run for President. Popular governor Goodwin J. "Goodie" Knight was forced by Knowland to seek his vacated Senate seat. This broke the GOP is California. Then, Knowland endorced Proposition 18 "The Right To Work Law." This lost the labor vote for the GOP totally. Brown would win in a landslide. Four years later, the governor's race in 1962, Brown defeated former Vice President Richard M. Nixon. Nixon made the famous remark to the press: " You won't have Dick Nixon to kick around anymore."
"Pat" Brown, in 1966 faced in a run for a 3rd term, a washed up actor from Warner Brothers, in the 1950's the host of General Electric Theatre and now the host of television's Death Valley Days. Ronald Reagan running on the platform to "Clean Up the Mess in Berkeley." Ronald Reagan defeated Pat Brown as he tried to do what Earl Warren had done be elected to a 3rd term.
Governor Brown has many accomplishments the State Water Project; Freeways and many others.
UC Berkeley, Watts and many problems of a changing time came at Governor "Pat" Brown, during his second term.
Since 1958 except for a few years during the term of Gov. Reagan; the Democrats have controled the Legislature.
In the book we see Browns fellow party members infighting famed Los Angeles Mayor Sam Yorty and Speaker of the Assembly Jesse "Big Daddy" Unruh. The Brown family continued with Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. 1975-1983 present Mayor of Oakland. "Pat" Brown's daughter Kathleen holding statewide office and being defeated in her bid for governor. This is a great book on a man of California Edmund G. "Pat" Brown.

Well-told, overdue story of a Governor and changing times........2005-05-19

First I'll disclose that the author, Ethan Rarick, is a friend of mine.
Having said that, I'd have quickly bought and read this biography whether I knew the guy or not.
Secondly, as a lifelong Californian of 50, I guess I'm exactly the right demographic for appreciating this book--Pat Brown is the first governor I can remember. Having childhood memories of the events in this book certainly made learning more about them that much more satisfying.
But what makes this book so fascinating is how drastically the political landscape changed during the years of his administration, and how the changes ruined him politically--for a while.
When elected in 1958 Brown was a forward-looking liberal with an ambitous agenda for improving California, one at which he was remarkably successful: banning racial discrimination, expanding a great university, and building a massive project to transport water unprecedented distances from wet parts of the state to dry ones.
But by the time of his loss to Ronald Reagan in 1966, time had passed Brown by. Events like the Berkeley free speech movement and Watts riots pushed middle America into a sharp right backlash. The fact that he genuinely anguished over whether to have men executed or to spare their lives, unlike successors who adopted a safe, knee-jerk, blanket pro-death approach, injured him further at a time of increasingly pro-authoritarian attitudes.
By '66, Brown seemed a hopeless relic. Damaged by a rough primary against Sam Yorty, L.A.'s racist demagogue mayor, and by his own inept scheme to sabotage the Republican primary, he was creamed by Reagan in his quest for a third term.
Yet, by the time of his death 30 years later, Brown had again become an icon, hailed as the most effective governor ever by political wannabes of both major parties.
A great personal story and an interesting slice of California history.

A real "keeper" of a book.......2006-01-03

I usually read books like this once, then trade them in. But this is a "keeper" to be read again and again.

It works on many levels and for many people. First, if you've ever thought about moving to the country, it is full of solid information on everything from wells to livestock. But it's also so full of humor and sensitivity, a true love of nature and an adventurous spirit that it makes great reading even if you're a metropolitan-ite.

The book had particular appeal to me since the author lives, and wrote about, an area not far from my home; one of my favorite places (Yamhill county, Oregon). If only she'd sell her farm to me!

wonderful collection of stories.......2003-03-09

If you've ever wanted to just forget city life and pack up and move to the country, read this book. It's a great collection of non-fiction writing about Drake's life in rural wine country, raising sheep and making wine.

Barbara Drake has written a sweet and lovely word-picture of her life on the Oregon farm she shares with her husband and their motley group of animals. Although she writes with a tender love for her land, and all that is on it, it is never saccharine, and is actually quite informative for anyone thinking of undertaking this type of lifestyle change.The book is written as a collection of brilliant essays,each filled with pathos,tenderness,and a deep understanding of the dramatic lifestyle changes involved in delving into farming.We meet, and learn to love, her sheep, geese, the sheepherding dogs,and the colorful neighbors. And even her warm and adoring father,who has an especially hilarious relationship with the hugely protective gander who patrols the gaggle of geese on the property, becomes someone you wish you could have met in person. This is one of those truly magical reads that leaves you with an afterglow of satisfaction after it's done. This is a must-read for anyone who appreciates the beauty and the magic of nature, the relationship of animal friends, the satisfaction of self-reliance and independence, or just someone who loves simply-beautiful prose. Barbara Drake is a poet at heart.

Drake's book is warm and touching but never mushy. She uses her words with economy to create vivid images that strike the eye, and the mind. I would encourage everyone to pick up a copy of this book. Filled with positive images, and insights that are surprising and touching, it's a great read, I couldn't put it down.

Terrifying! Haunting!.......2001-10-18

This is a breathless suspense novel that has a lot more going for it than just a series of killings of blonde male strippers. It's New York in l980, on the eve of the AIDS epidemic. Jason Fury sets his tale against a rainy, cold, dark city, amidst a hypnotic evocation of the wild, gay life back then, especially within the gay strip joints. A powerful ending with the disturbing line from John Donne that begins the book: "I runne to Death and Death meets me as fast and all my troubles are like yesterday." A real classic. I read the re-issued version.

Haunting classic!.......2000-10-20

I've been hearing about this book for several years now. I finally got me a copy and was entranced. Fury weaves a haunting, brilliant tale of a serial killer whose butchering blonde, male strippers--like the hero of the book. Based on fact, the story is written at a feverish pace, with little let-up. Fury brilliantly evokes a vanished era, of live sex shows on 42nd Street, the pre-condom gay flicks just emerging. The author has stated that there were many editorial cuts due to the censorship of that time and he feels the edits watered down the power. Not so. A darkly, haunting classic that you should have next to "Eric's Body" by same author.
