Book Description
Separation of signal from noise is the most fundamental problem in data analysis, and arises in many fields, for example, signal processing, econometrics, acturial science, and geostatistics. This book introduces the local regression method in univariate and multivariate settings, and extensions to local likelihood and density estimation. Basic theoretical results and diagnostic tools such as cross validation are introduced along the way. Examples illustrate the implementation of the methods using the LOCFIT software.

Huckleberry George.......2003-05-05
A young boy wanders from one vivid experience to another to another, just like kids do. His childhood had unique exposures to Nazi terror and horror, to be sure. But throughout those grim days, there remained that irrepressible insouciance of youth. There was even hero worship when he became involved with the French underground. He brings us right along with him as he becomes a man.
This author described what was, more than anything else, a normal, adventuresome boyhood. Although I was expecting something more like "The Diary of Anne Frank", this book was more reminiscent of "Huckleberry Finn".
Living in Nazi-Occupied France.......2003-02-28
Seeped into the depths of war and dispair of mankind, Dr. Burnell takes us on a journey through Nazi-occupied France during WWII. As opposed to the atrocities of holocaust victims in that same era, we are instead introduced into the lives of the common citizenry as they struggle through each day not knowing who is friend or foe. Dr. Burnell's family must decide when to run and when to stay; while knowing their decisions set them at risk to lose everything, including their lives. Balanced with historical facts, Dr. Burnell tells a tale that has us turning the pages, immersing us into the joys and sorrows of a family that in the end prevails despite their losses and succeeds in spite of the tragedy brought by war.
Beating the Odds reviewed.......2003-02-07
Dr. Burnell tells a story of fear, brutality, resourcefulness, courage, and sensitivity. These emotions are the backdrop to his autobiographical tale of growing from just-past-childhood to near-adulthood in Nazi-occupied France during WW 2. Burnell describes how he and his mother survived the relentless threat of the Nazis as they fled from city to city in France just barely ahead of the Nazi persecution. From Strasbourg in the eastern part of the country to Paris to Bordeaux and finally to Lyon in the south. Along the way his stepfather was consumed by the Holocaust and by the end Burnell was fighting back by working for the French Resistance. The writing is clear, personal, and carries the read along swiftly. I could barely put it down- thus I read it in just a few nights.
Extremely well written memoir.......2003-02-02
This is a well written, interesting memoir of a Holocaust survivor in France. The sections on political events are well placed and provide appropriate historic background to contents of the book.
Myself a Holocaust survivor, I learned from it a lot about life in France during those years and enjoyed reading it.
A BOYHOOD ODYSSEY DURING WWII.......2003-01-18
"Beating the Odds" by George Burnell is the exciting autobiography of a youngster growing up in Nazi-occupied France during WWII. In 369 action packed pages, the author traces his journey from Strasbourg, France in 1939 until the end of WWII in May, 1945. "Beating the Odds" is a real page turner that reads like a novel full of twists and turns. As an adolescent French Jew, George with his family lived in constant fear of discovery by the Nazis and moved frequently to ellude them. Despite these risks, he manages to join his Uncle David, a Dentist, and others in the French Resistance and narrowly escapes with his life. This fascinating memoir gives the reader an interesting and unique perspective on WWII in France and I highly recommend it to you.

Understanding Supreme Court Opinions (5th Edition)
ASIN: 0446606111 |
Amazon.com
Burton S. Katz, a former prosecutor and trial judge, blames the Supreme Court for creating an atmosphere in which the hands of police are tied while known criminals are set free--not because of a dearth of evidence, but due to technicalities and a procedural maze. Katz argues that by creating legal loopholes for defense attorneys, law enforcement officers are more likely to bend the truth concerning how evidence was gathered and whether a defendant was read their rights correctly, a widespread phenomenon known as "testi-lying." This, he says, is not due to dishonesty, but to an understanding of the procedure that must be followed in order to ensure that justice prevails. Along with his critique he offers recommendations for fixing what he views as a broken system, namely by relaxing the current rules regarding gathering of evidence and obtaining confessions--indeed a case of backing up to move forward, for this was precisely the system employed before the Supreme Court effected the changes that Katz rails against. In light of recent high-profile cases involving Rodney King, O.J. Simpson, and the Menendez brothers, Justice Overruled is a timely and pragmatic approach to criminal justice reform from a 25-year insider.

Interesting assessment of our criminal justice system.......2004-11-28
This book does a good job of explaining some of the problems with the criminal justice system. We see how attorneys routinely destroy honest witnesses on the stand, in total violation of professional ethics. We see attorneys hide evidence and doctor documents. We see"expert" witnesses say whatever the attorneys tell them to say. We see police say whatever the procedures imply would be the best testimony to give, accurate or not. And we see some juries intentionally give unjust verdicts, without any fear of reprisals for wrongdoing.
Katz's first target is the exclusionary rule. This rule is intended to keep evidence out of the courtroom if the cops seize it illegally. Well, it is all well and good to deter police misconduct, this rule is not part of our constitutional rights. All it accomplishes is to make truth irrelevant in criminal proceedings. It has to go, and our rights have to stay.
The same goes for the "Miranda" rule, which once again gets truth out of the courtroom. Since truth is a prerequisite for justice, this has to be counterproductive.
Removing these rules would decrease the number of lies told by police on the witness stand to avoid having otherwise legitimate cases thrown out. And these lies are deadly to the system: they cause everyone to lose respect for justice, and at some crucial moments, good lawyers will catch the police telling such lies and get completely guilty defendants to go free, causing the justice system to look even worse. Katz points out that police ought to be prosecuted for violating Fourth Amendment rights, and that criminals ought to go free only if the violations are "shocking to the conscience of a civilized society."
Katz next takes on juries, explaining that the Bushell case in 1670 is a precedent that has prevented jurors from being penalized for bad verdicts. That has been a blessing in some cases, but has allowed juries to misbehave badly in others. Katz has some ideas on how to improve matters. It includes avoiding the large number of jury challenges, which can degenerate into a contest to see "who can pick the stupidest and most bigoted jury." In my opinion, juries ought not be trusted with determining truth at all and at best ought to decide what justice to apply given the truth.
There is a marvellous chapter about witnesses, which includes the amazing examination of Mary Brunner by fellow Manson family murderer Bobby Beausoleil. Katz points out that statements taken by the police ought to be videotaped. As for difficult witnesses changing their stories under oath, Katz suggests exposing such witnesses to perjury charges.
The author also recommends getting rid of "imperfect self-defense" and other abuse excuses such as "diminished capacity" and "temporary insanity." Even if there really were extenuating circumstances arising from something of this sort, the time to apply them would be at sentencing, not in determining guilt or innocence.
Finally, there is a recommendation to have cameras in the courtroom.
I think there are plenty of useful suggestions in this book, and I enjoyed reading it.
The best of three books by trial court juges........1997-11-22
I've recently read three books by former trial court judges and Katz's is the best of the three. The other two, Guilty by Harold Rothwaz and Don't Pee on My Leg and Tell Me It's Raining by Judy Sheindlin, are both good at presenting the worst examples from the criminal justice system. Sheindlin was also a family court judge and provides additional stories on problems with the juvenile justice system. Katz, however, does a better job of analysis of the problems. He also covers a broader range of issues that affect the system at various stages during the criminal trial process.

DISSAPOINTED!!.......2005-03-11
i bought this book because im very interested on columbine's facts etc.
so i thought this book was going to be shocking or exiteing, or at least had something to do with columbine.
well the book starts talking about her, wich u think is ok, because u'll read her side of the story
but she really starts with the God thing, and family support, and being a bad girl, and being a good girl, etc etc.
what she talks a bout columbine is so....nothing....i mean u can even think that she made it up. because she doesn't show her real feelings and she doesnt write about consecuences or so. at the end she just talk about God, her religion etc etc.....
Disappointing.......2003-08-15
I bought the book, because in the subtitle it claimed to be "An Eyewitness Account of the Columbine Tragedy". Very disappointingly, though, it deals more with how the author found her way to Jesus than with the Columbine tragedy. The book offers no analysis whatsoever of the circumstances that led to the tragic events at Columbine High, April 20, 1999. The two perpetrators, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, are barely even mentioned and Heidi Johnson makes no effort in trying to understand how two seemingly normal teenagers could commit such a terrible crime. The tragic school killing is seen as the work of the devil and faith in Jesus, who died at the cross for our sins, is pointed to as the solution that could prevent more Columbines from happening. This message is repeated over and over throughout the book. The most interesting part of the book is Heidi's description of her problems with getting accepted among her peers when she was a new student at Columbine High. Coming from Denmark, I don't know much about American high schools, but if an intelligent and beautiful girl like Heidi can have problems with getting friends at school something definitely must be wrong! And one can, perhaps, better understand how Dylan and Eric, who were isolated and constantly bullied at school, must have felt. Part of the problem is, according to Heidi, that many people today are more concerned with getting social status, money and career than with accepting and caring for each other. Many American teenagers lack a sense of moral direction in their life and are obsessed with alcohol, sex, drugs and violent computer games. Their hedonistic and "sinful" lifestyle represents the "evil forces" in modern society and faith in Jesus is the only true answer. Thus, Heidi tends to look at the world simply as a struggle between "good" and "evil", Jesus and the Devil. This analysis, however, seems a little too simplistic and Heidi's constant repetition of the same religious message gets rather tiresome in the long run. If you want a detailed analysis of the circumstances that led to the shooting at Columbine, Heidi's book is, I'm sorry to say, not the one to pick. Rather, I would recommend Brooks Brown and Rob Merritt: No Easy Answers: The Truth Behind the Murders at Columbine High School (Lantern Books, 2002).
Very Good Book.......2003-04-30
I think that this book is very good because it details the experiences of someone who was at Columbine and how her faith helped see her through what happened.
However, I think this book's main weakness is that the author does sound slightly self-righteous at times and I don't think that this is a book is suitable for anyone who wants to learn more about what happened at Columbine on 4/20/99.
This is a great book about someone who survived what happened at Columbine and I would definitely recommend it, especially to anyone who is a Christian.
'Silence' Spectacular.......2002-10-31
Writing a book must be a hard thing to do, and for a 19 year old girl to write about something so horrifying must be even harder. I picked up Heidi's book from our church, and couldn't put it down. I've read alot of books on Columbine and all are good. This is no exception. Although it is short, I like that, as it doesn't take long to read and doesn't overstate things twice. I like how Heidi has it set up, with her life before Columbine, the shootings themselves, and her life now afterwards. It is a personal account, and perhaps can help some people who are still dealing with it come to terms with it, or at least make it more of a reality. It gets one inside the head of a survivor who was there and makes all that we heard on the news and saw in the papers come alive. You should read this book if you were at all affected by Columbine! yay Heidi!
Pretty Fair.......2002-08-26
I enjoyed the book because of her eyewitness account of the shootings in the library.I also thought her earlier experiences in school were interesting. The books talks a LOT about her religion so if you find that a turnoff be forewarned.I think she means well, but she came off a little self righteous at times.
If you are seriously interested in Columbine or are a Christian, this is a book you will want to buy.

Customer Reviews:
What a wild adventure!!!.......2005-08-18
I just finished this book and I enjoyed it immensely. Occasionally, I felt a little lost with the German sentences which didn't receive a translation, and only wished I was at all fluent in German as I have a feeling they were probably pretty funny themselves. The book only got better and better as it neared the end! And I'm not even a relative of the author!!! HIP HIP HOORAYYY! There's the next book to look forward to which Mr. Mirll has just published, and as soon as this review is done, I'm ordering it.... keep up the good work, Terry!
How simply hilarious!.......2004-03-26
I promise, this is the funniest, most charmingly hilarious novel I have ever read! This is apparently Mr Mirll's first novel, and I can't wait to read more of his work.
What a Cool Book!.......2002-12-13
A friend of mine had been deeply engrossed in a book for a while. She had gotten it as a gift and was unable to put it down. When she finished, I asked her about it.
"It's called Children and Fools, and it's absolutely fantastic!" was the answer I got.
If she had called it "absolutely fantastic", well, that's pretty big! So, I asked if I could read it. She said yes, and I took it home.
Mr. Mirll really has a way of writing. This guy has to be a genius or something! When I finished I didn't want to return it right away. It's terrific.
I haven't laughed so hard in a long time!.......2002-11-09
I enjoyed this book a lot and have already loaned it to a number of friends and relatives. Mirll has a great way with words and takes what may be rather standard situations and creates incredibly funny stories out of them. It's light-hearted for the most part, but you do pick up quite a bit about Austria. Having lived in Austria during the time in which the story is set, it struck me as very accurate and inciteful.
The main thing is that it was wickedly funny - at several parts I was laughing harder than I have in a long time. If you enjoy excellent turns of phrase, absurd situations and have something of a cynical turn, you'll probably enjoy this book. I'll definitely read anything else the author writes.
Well written and Intelligently clever.......2002-10-28
If you're looking for a good book to read, Children and Fools by Terry Mirll is a terrific one.
Set in Austria, this delightful tale is altogether funny. It's like Animal House, but set in Europe! The embarrassing things that happen to the star of this story, which include an acrobatic turkey and a maniacal soda machine, will make anybody laugh.
The story is set at the time of the Gulf War, and there are serious moments too, adding just a bit of suspense. The history of Austria, its ways and customs, and other details definately make this book a wonderful reading adventure.
Well written and clever, you are sure to enjoy Children and Fools- a Twisted Tale of the Vienna Woods, by Terry Mirll.
