      Book Description

Corporations are undergoing dramatic changes that have significant implications for how human resources are best managed and organized. There is growing consensus that human capital is critical to an organization’s success. But how should the HR function itself be organized? Is change in HR keeping pace with organizational change overall?

Creating a Strategic Human Resources Organization reports the findings from a 6-year longitudinal study of whether and how the HR functions in large corporations are responding to the challenges and opportunities posed by the changing business environment. The book identifies the changes that will be required in order for HR to become a true strategic partner, and suggests why, in too many companies, this transition is not occurring. It examines the paradoxical roles played in this transition by the focus on talent management and the application of IT capabilities, and proposes a new way of conceptualizing HR as providing three service lines. It finds that the most effective HR teams are substantially changing their mix of activities to become knowledge-based contributors to organizational strategy and effectiveness.

The authors conclude that HR is at a crossroads, and will either have to face up to these challenges or become a marginal contributor to corporate success.

The study was carried out at the Center for Effective Organizations in the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California, and was funded by the Human Resource Planning Society and the corporate sponsors of the Center for Effective Organizations.

            Book Description

The study of the physiologic role of nitric oxide and radicals in vascular pathophysiology is a science in its infancy, and our knowledge is expected to increase exponentially over the next few years. This is the first publication in the field and as such is a unique volume. This book provides a current review of the role of nitric oxide and oxygen radicals in the pulmonary vasculature, in both normal and pathological conditions, and also of the potential manipulation or administration of nitric oxide to treat pulmonary hypertension, whether idiopathic or secondary to congenital heart disease. The text will be valuable to researchers or physicians in pulmonary medicine pediatric cardiologists. Respiratory care physicians and intensive-care specialists who study and treat ARDS or IRDS (adult or infant respiratory distress syndromes) would also benefit from this publication. This book is of particular interest to physiologists concerned with vascular biology or with the activity of nitric oxide and oxygen radicals.

              Book Description

For the last decade, the author has been working to extend continuum mechanics to treat moving boundaries in materials focusing, in particular, on problems of metallurgy. This monograph presents a rational treatment of the notion of configurational forces; it is an effort to promote a new viewpoint. Included is a presentation of configurational forces within a classical context and a discussion of their use in areas as diverse as phase transitions and fracture. The work should be of interest to materials scientists, mechanicians, and mathematicians.

Many people have interesting childhoods, eccentric relatives, go off to college, and set out as adults to make their way in the world. Few people are as keenly observant or can write as compellingly about these experiences as does Alabama poet laureate Helen Blackshear in this inviting memoir. Here we are invited into extended Southern families and are given glimpses of a world that no longer exists - of genteel women's schools, of college towns when they were small communities, of first car trips and first suitors and a young girl's coming of age. The author recalls us back to her world in the early to mid-twentieth century, and reveals in the process her own generous spirit and wise heart.

"A wonderful book that challenges the idea that the Court did nothing of importance prior to Marshall's appointment; . . . it seems destined to become a staple source for the Court's first decade.
                    --Supreme Court Historical Society Quarterly

"This absorbing collection of essays . . . goes far toward filling a void in the literature on the early justices of the world's most significant tribunal."
                    --Law and Politics Book Review

"This creative and imaginative analysis of America's first national jurists is recommended for all students of Supreme Court history."
                    --Choice

"Professor Gerber's Seriatim is a genuinely welcome work, an imaginative one, and a distinctly needed one. The pre-Marshall period had all--too--long been neglected and when addressed at all, it was usually done in cursory, brief compass. Gerber has done a splendid job in securing experts to analyze the labors and persona of the ten pre-Marshall jurists on our highest bench, and his introduction to the essays is a model of synthesis and clarity."
--Henry J. Abraham, James Hart Professor of Government and Foreign Affairs, Emeritus, University of Virginia

"This useful collection of biographical essays, bracketed by splendid treatments of John Jay and Oliver Elsworth, goes a long way toward establishing that the first justices of the Supreme Court were an impressive collection of political and constitutional thinkers who did much, before and during their service on the Court, to construct the constitutional order."
--Mark Tushnet, Georgetown University Law Center

Seldom has American law seen a more towering figure than Chief Justice John Marshall. Indeed, Marshall is almost universally regarded as the "father of the Supreme Court" and "the jurist who started it all."

Yet even while acknowledging the indelible stamp Marshall put on the Supreme Court, it is possible--in fact necessary--to examine the pre-Marshall Court, and its justices, to gain a true understanding of the origins of American constitutionalism. The ten essays in this tightly edited volume were especially commissioned for the book, each by the leading authority on his or her particular subject. They examine such influential justices as John Jay, John Rutledge, William Cushing, James Wilson, John Blair, James Iredell, William Paterson, Samuel Chase, Oliver Ellsworth, and Bushrod Washington. The result is a fascinating window onto the origins of the most powerful court in the world, and on American constitutionalism itself.

Gerber's collection is a complete review on the subject, challenging notions that the Court was inconsequential and irrelevant prior to John Marshall's appointment as Chief Justice of the United States in 1801. The compiled works illustrate effectively the Court's prohibition on advisory opinions and the Constitutional importance of the decision in Chisholm v. Georgia.

                    Book Description

This book looks at why it's so difficult to create ‘the rule of law’ in post-conflict societies such as Iraq and Afghanistan, and offers critical insights into how policy-makers and field-workers can improve future rule of law efforts. A must-read for policy-makers, field-workers, journalists and students trying to make sense of the international community's problems in Iraq and elsewhere, this book shows how a narrow focus on building institutions such as courts and legislatures misses the more complex cultural issues that affect societal commitment to the values associated with the rule of law. The authors place the rule of law in context, showing the interconnectedness between the rule of law and other post-conflict priorities, such as reestablishing security. The authors outline a pragmatic, synergistic approach to the rule of law which promises to reinvigorate debates about transitions to democracy and post-conflict reconstruction.

5 out of 5 stars A look at Building a Government After Invasion.......2007-01-22

This book comes at a particularily appropriate time. It has become very clear that the administrations of the major powers are operating at the limits of their capabilities in the area of peacemaking after conflict.

It seems that there was a string of what have to be considered real successes: Japan and Germany were out bitter enemies during World War II, yet after the war, what has to be considered enlightened supervision totally changed their governments to democracies reflecting the will of the people and making them good neighbors. South Korea is another example.

Then a series of bloodbaths occurred. Perhaps a hundred wars since then, with perhaps a hundred million people killed. Are we to allow more 'holocausts' in Haiti, Rwanda, and on and on.

This book is the report of law professors in U.S. law schools, but professors with experience on the ground in Haiti, Bosnia, Kosovo, East Timor, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Iraq. ==These are not subjects that were unknown in our Government before the Iraq/Afthanistan invasions, but the level of the difficulty in establishing working governments certainly seems to have been minimized.

This book is an important contribution to thinking about the problems now being faced in Iraq.

                                          Book Description

Beginning readers seeking an accessible biography will be captivated by the story of the remarkable Ida B. Wells-Barnett (1862 1931), a teacher, journalist, lecturer, and civil rights leader. In clear, easy-to-read prose, award-winning author Angela Shelf Medearis shows how Wells-Barnett triumphed over adversity throughout her life and became a respected leader. Orphaned at the age of fourteen, with five younger siblings to care for, she taught school to support her family. Later Wells-Barnett became part-owner of an African-American newspaper and led a crusade against lynching, endangering her life. A champion of the cause of suffrage for women, she was an outspoken, unusual woman whose courage to seek the truth and fight for justice made history. Angela Shelf Medearis is the author of thirty-three books, including Dare to Dream: Coretta Scott King and the Civil Rights Movement, which Booklist called "a concise, engaging biography for young readers."

WRITER'S DIGEST, who has selected "The Red-Eye Fever" for its 2003 Book Award, Life Stories category, says, "...More than just a tale of a crocodile hunt, it ("The Red-Eye Fever") is a peek at a slice of time now gone. The look at the Congo as it stood on the verge of independence makes for fascinating reading. The author also wisely focuses her story, just dealing with her stay in the Congo. This narrowing of the topic adds power to the story. The writing reflects sensitivity and thoughtfulness, with the author providing example stories, dialogue and rich details to illustrate the general point that she is making. In looking at the style of writing, it is clear that this author has a talent for telling stories. The look of the book is also compelling, tying in with the idea of life in another time." Cleveland Moffett, book reviewer for THE BULLETIN, (the newsweekly of the capital of Europe, Brussels, Belgium, June 5, 2003, issue) writes, "The Red-Eye Fever, Adventures in the Belgian Congo" is a memoir by Elise Dallemagne-Cookson of her life in the Congo on a Foreign Service assignment that lasted from 1959 to the eve of the colony's independence a year later. "Dallemagne-Cookson tells what sounds like a very tall story about crocodile hunting with convincing relish. She had not been long at her new job when she accepted the challenge to take a plunge into the jungle to track down the formidable 175-year-old crocodile El Diablo. The sassy young New Yorker takes him on and lives to tell the tale. The cover photograph shows her with a gun in one hand, her foot on El Diablo's scaly back."

There is something in the cadence of the storytelling of The Red-Eye Fever so directly descended from the pulp novel that it took me by surprise to discover that this wonderfully crafted book was, in fact, a memoir. What leaps off the page aren't the reminiscences of a retired school marm from upstate New York, but more the flexing prose of an erstwhile Hemingway or an underdistributed Edgar Rice Burroughs.

Simply stated, The Red-Eye Fever is a well-spun and well-muscled adventure. Its two-fisted prose provides a refreshing respite from the solipsistic meanderings that so often characterize this genre; its cinematic sense of structure plays neatly against its historical backdrop. If you're tired of the current crop of wan contemporary fiction, The Red-Eye Fever may be exactly what you are craving.

                                          Elise Dallemagne

This is a well-crafted, true-life adventure story. Read it and be transported to the Belgian Congo in the 1950's, where a nice young American girl gets herself invited to go crocodile hunting. Although she has never killed an animal in her life, she finds herself having to pull the trigger on a huge crocodile that has terrorized the region for years. The story is fresh and convincing because it was written from notes taken at the time. The accompanying photographs, which the author almost lost, are priceless records of the country and the people.

5 out of 5 stars Vivid and Historic Peek into Pre-Independence Africa.......2002-12-19

Dallemagne's new book about the Belgian Congo rings true in every detail, and particularly fascinating are the many full-page photographs that are all through the book. I especially appreciated the colonial map of the Congo, nearly impossible to find today.
Her descriptions of the Europeans and Americans in Africa are disheartening in their accuracy. These empirialists didn't have a clue how to assist the Congolese into democratic self-governing, and we all know the tragic result. Her adventure down river to slay the Dragon of the Kwango is a "thumping good read," and could even be seen as metaphor.
As in all her books, the characters are utterly believable, and it is almost heartbreaking to read of the instant in time when she is told to turn Patrice Lumumba away from the American Diplomatic offices -- one of those forks in world history when things would have been vastly different if the other road had been taken. If you want to know what went wrong in our relations with the whole continent, this eye-witness account will give some insight into this sad era of the late 1950s. In addition to all that, it's a fast-paced drama with all the elements you need for an entertaining winter evening. Recommended read!
