Startling Erudition.......2006-04-24

My favorite book.
The Unfinished Universe is an epic tale of the comparison between the city on the hill and the city of God. It is one part Augustine, one part Thomas, and one part C S Lewis. Few will come away from the book without understanding, as Pope John Paul II said, that faith is fulfilled in reason.
It was written by a Methodist minister who converted to Catholicism while writing the book. He was also a WW I veteran and the editor of The Dublin Review.

Image registration is utilised whenever information obtained from different viewpoints needs to be combined or compared and unwanted distortion needs to be eliminated. For example, CCTV images, ultrasound images, brain scan images, fingerprint and retinal scanning. Modersitzki's book provides a systematic introduction to the theoretical, practical, and numerical aspects of image registration, with special emphasis on medical applications. Various techniques are described, discussed and compared using numerous illustrations. The text starts with an introduction to the mathematical principles and the motivating example of the Human Neuroscanning Project whose aim is to build an atlas of the human brain through reconstructing essential information out of deformed images of sections of a prepared brain. The introduction is followed by coverage of parametric image registrations such as landmark based, principal axes based, and optimal affine linear registration. Basic distance measures like sum of squared differences, correlation, and mutual information are also discussed. The next section is devoted to state-of-the-art non-parametric image registrations where general variational based framework for image registration is presented and used to describe and compare well-known and new image registration techniques. Finally, efficient numerical schemes for the underlying partial differential equations are presented and discussed. This text treats the basic mathematical principles, including aspects from approximation theory, image processing, numerics, partial differential equations, and statistics, with a strong focus on numerical methods in image processing. Providing a systematic and general framework for image registration, the book not only presents state-of-the-art concepts but also summarises and classifies the numerous techniques to be found in the literature.

This collection begins with items written by Franklin during his early years in Boston and London (1722- 1726), including the complete "Silence Dogood" essay series. The volume also includes the famous "Busy-Body" essays (1728-1729); many of the news articles and essays he penned after he purchased the failing Pennsylvania Gazette (which eventually became the most widely read newspaper in the colonies); and various political satires, pamphlets, and personal correspondence written while he lived in Philadelphia from 1726 to 1757. The book concludes with material he published while a diplomat in London from 1757 to 1775 (including letters to the press, satires, and pamphlets).

Controversial in his own time, and the subject of vigorous debate ever since-to Matthew Arnold he exemplified "victorious good sense," while to D. H. Lawrence he was "the first dummy American"-Franklin emerges in this collection as a figure of extraordinary complexity for readers to discover, consider, and appreciate anew.

A companion volume includes Poor Richard's Almanack, Franklin's classic Autobiography, and his later writings.

The wonderful Library of America (I hope all of you support it as well as buy their fabulous volumes) decided to split the 1,600 plus pages of their volume of the writings of Benjamin Franklin into two volumes. This first volume contains the earlier materials. It includes the famous Silence Dogood articles, the "Busy Body" essays, articles from his influential paper "The Pennsylvania Gazette", as well as other pamphlets, and miscellaneous writings. It concludes with some of the material he wrote while in London as a diplomat. My fear is that the second volume will be more popular because the material is more familiar. However, Franlin's earlier writings are quite important and should be read and valued just as highly.

Benjamin Franklin is one of the great icons of the American Founding. He is truly one of the essential men who built our nation and deserves every praise we can heap on him. When we see images of the founders, they are all shown as old men, not how old they were in 1776. Franklin was really a generation older than most of the firebrands who led the Revolution. He was seventy when he signed the Declaration of Independence (John Adams was 41, George Washington 44, and Thomas Jefferson 33 on July 4, 1776) and eighty-one when he signed our Constitution as a member of the delegation from Pennsylvania. He was an amazing man. He was a successful printer, inventor, philanthropist, revolutionary, diplomat, and all around student of the world.

This book is interesting to dip into and read just those portions that interest you, as well as reading its more than 800 pages front to back. It has great notes on the text that provide contextual and translation help as well as sources, a most interesting chronology of Franklin's long and productive life, and an index.

This certainly is a must have for your shelf on the history of America's Founding.

A great book about a great person.......2002-06-08

Ray Scheele does a wonderful job of capturing the life of Larry Conrad, a true public servant. The reader is left wishing that all our elected officials embodied the same qualities that Conrad did, regardless of political affiliation.

Life of A Leader.......2001-05-31

This is an outstanding account of the life of one of the thousands of Americans whose public service nurishes and sustains the nation. Raymond Scheel has not only captured the contributions of a good and effective local and state leader, Larry Conrad, but he also places Conrad in context and makes clear why such men are important. Scheele has mastered an impressive amount of material, including extensive personal interviews. This book is an interpretation as well as an account of Conrad's lfe in crystal clear language.

In 1984 film director Gus Van Sant (Drugstore Cowboy and Good Will Hunting) began his career with a small, black-and-white independent movie called Mala Noche. Van Sant's film, a gritty look at a gay man's relationship to Latino teenagers in Portland, Oregon's Little Mexico, was based on a novella by Walt Curtis, a street poet with a cult following among experimental writers and audiences. Curtis's small chapbook has never been widely available but is reprinted here with more material by him and an introduction by Van Sant. Curtis's authentic voice sounds like a cross between Allen Ginsberg and the over-narration on a travelogue about inner-city life. He is unstinting in his self-revelation, and the energy and love he has for his characters is palpable (the city of Portland is as much of a person here as his fellow humans). Mala Noche will be a revelation for anyone who loves Van Sant's film, and a fine introduction for those who have yet to watch it.

"Bad Night".......2000-06-23

After reading this story you either like Walt Curtis or you don't. Walt, a gay man, runs a grocery store in Portland, where he has contact with poor Latino teenagers. His relationship first with Johnny and then Raul, are on the borderline of obsession, if not true obsession. The whole book centers around Walt trying to gain their love and having sexual relations with these young men. At times it's hard to take. You hear yourself asking, "doesn't he had any other interest in life" other than these boys.

Although this is a taboo subject matter, Walt is a gifted writer who speaks very honestly and from the heart. It's a fascinating story of skid row life in Portland, Oregon. Its easy to get lost in these characters lives. You'll be anxious to read the book right through to the end. Its gets my recommendation for these reasons.
