Customer Reviews:
The most complete book on Megaplanning to date.......2007-02-20
I have been using this book as a guide for strategic planning in several business projects and with my PhD and MBA students.
It is a complete and practical guide to develop and implement a strategic plan focused on identifying measurable positive social contributions. Social value added is the key factor for sustainable and sustained business success.
Kaufman explains with clarity and eloquent examples how organizations can create their own future by helping their clients, markets and communities to succeed. That is not only an ethical imperative, but good business sense: guiding a company by stock value metrics alone is as sensible as using a compass on a roller-coaster.
With Kaufman's tools and methodology, value-sustracting business schemes such as Enron's or World Comm become evident without "whistle-blowers"
Business is about value creation, and this book is the best tool available to do it I know.
Working towards a future we can all share.......2003-08-19
This is a practical guide that dares to take you far beyond the next quarterly results. A challenge to work towards a future that we can all share - and a supportive and detailed framework to help you and your organization thrive as you create it.
The book is a real compendium of Mega Planning. It goes well beyond previous texts and shows how many other issues become important when attempting a serious plan for the future. Suddenly we are confronted with a range of stakeholders, internal and external, some of whom we might rather not remember, and many of whom will be resistant to real change and would prefer a strategic plan that sleeps peacefully in the filing cabinet for five years. So this book talks a lot about Creating Change (as opposed to merely Managing Change), the roles required and the kinds of resistance that may be met. In the same vein it covers every aspect of strategic planning, from paradigms and leadership to mental models.
To mention just a few of the topics that caught my attention: the contrast and the interplay between systems and system thinking; the importance of feedback between all parties; the extended problem solving method; how to scan to find the payoffs in planning (and so make strategy more attractive); the ongoing balance between process (what you're doing) and the results you are aiming for (which can sometimes be undercut by the process you use).
There are some important extensions of models - Albrecht's Four Business Logics become six. There are quotes and classical definitions that are very useful, sometimes humourous.
Remembering that half the effort of Mega Planning is to build alliances with key players who are not used to thinking beyond their own success (usually immediate), included is a PowerPoint display and a neat Appendix on the new paradigms of teaching (should be in every place of learning). And, or course, the Code of Conduct is a challenge to all practitioners, just as this whole book is a challenge to all of us who want there to be life beyond the next quarter.

Book Description
By the 1890s Victorians assumed that London's hospitals were facing an endemic financial crisis which was so severe that some feared the state might have to intervene to support an ailing voluntary system: charity both underpinned London's hospitals and proved insufficient to meet the ever-increasing cost of care, despite the ability of those running the hospitals to pick the pockets of the benevolent. Charity and the London Hospitals takes these themes to study the development of the hospital as an economic, medical, and voluntary institution in the second half of the ninteenth century. Drawing on a comparative study of hospital records, the author investigates how and why Victorians contributed to show that benevolence was rarely amenable to a single form or reason, moving on to argue that though it remained central to the hospitals' raison d'etre, philanthropy's contribution was modified at a financial and administrative level as hospitals shifted from being philanthropic to medical institutions. Why this process occurred and the impact of professionalisation and scientific medicine are also assessed, as are the debates surrounding hospitals and the state at the end of the nineteenth century.KEIR WADDINGTON is a Research Fellow at the University of Cardiff.

Customer Reviews:
a worthwhile reference.......2000-10-31
This book goes beyond the SM basics given in the reference manual of any CAD vendor, and gets "under the hood" by explaining in plain language and in detail, the ABCs of SM theory. While encyclopedic in both format and tone, this book is--on the whole--quite readable and insightful. The coherent layout is quite user-friendly, the graphics are good, and the insertion of tips, tricks, and traps are a source of valuable advise--they break the text down into bite-sized chunks. Though not to be read cover to cover, this book should be part of any reputable CAD library.
Dated, poorly edited collection of articles.......1998-11-03
An out-of-date and poorly edited collection of articles about solid modeling. Many of them seem to have been provided by CAD/CAM system providers, who advertise throughout the book.

Book Description
Growth in the numbers of organic chemicals during recent decades has been extraordinary. Most are complex compounds that are released directly and/or indirectly to the surrounding environment. A view is emerging in relation to environmental protection and hazardous substance management that (1) some organic chemicals and/or organic leachates from solid waste materials and contaminated sediment/soil sites are of such extreme environmental concern that all use should be highly controlled including isolation for disposal; and (2) most hazardous substances are of sufficient social value that their continual use, production and disposal are justified. For these chemicals their types, sources, fate, behavior, effects and remediation at solid- aqueous phase interfaces must be fully assessed and understood. This assessment and understanding are essential for society to accept risks of adverse ecological or human health effects.

Book Description
In the second volume of Vincent Roth's Guyana memoirs, Vincent is a mature adult who is very sure of himself and bound to his adopted country. Roth's memoirs, while revealing colonial petty-minded bureaucracy, jumped-up officialdom, and incompetence, nevertheless present a picture of a country that worked, where the mail reached the remotest parts of the interior, but where the obliterating power of nature over human effort had to be constantly resisted.
Customer Reviews:
it's the path not the distance.......1999-04-08
As a professional woman in a two career family I sometimes felt as though Anne was speaking to directly to me across the generational divide. What she shares is a balance that you rarely see in books about successful lives. She speaks of the homes she lived in as well as her career. She talks about making hard choices and balancing the goals of two talented people very much in love. The gender war is not usually a war on the home front, it is rather a complicated dance to the staccato music of the world.
It is not necessary to appreciate her contributions to information law to embrace this book, but having that knowledge in the background allowed me to appreciate that while some over-use the phrase 'third way" some people truly have found such a path.

This stunning father-daughter story takes it's readers on an emotional journey: we share laughs, tears, frustration, anger, fear, joy, and most importantly HOPE; hope for the characters, hope for each other - hope for mankind.
This book is truly an inspiration, a must read book with a story and a message that should never be forgotten.
Passionately written, this book is one you cannot put down.
Bravo to Mrs.Bragin!
Life Stories that bring me Strength.......2004-07-18
Poignant life stories with strong message of hope.
Made me react and gave me strength to stand up for the truth. Positive message of making the best of life and what it offers.
Placed on my night stand, I always read over different passages to feel good, to learn something and to fill up on courage.
Moreover, Dr Bragins writing is so enjoyable to read.
Awesome book!

Exellent reading!.......2004-07-13
An excellent book! A well designed, well written, moving story, about a topic I have a lot of interest in. I recommend it enthusiastically to anybody wanting to learn more about the absurdity of the Red Holocaust and the many lives it attempted to destroy...
A Moving, Well Written Book.......2004-05-21
Irina Eremia Bragin's riveting story entertains the reader on many levels: as a woman's compelling memoir, as a tribute to her heroic but troubled father, and as a thoughtful commentary on important ethical issues that speak to all of us.

Philosophy from the north slope.......2004-03-04
Having read Mr. Wright's first book, Koviashuvik: Making a Home in the Brooks Range, I was anxious to read this. Although much of the book is his philosophical viewpoint about "life explanations", a great deal of the wonderful Alaskan serenity and harshness comes through. I am sad to say, this writing was neither entertaining nor left me soulful. I think the author has grown old and yet as wise as he clearly is/was, doesn't fit well into 21st century solutions. I take homage at his reference to the northern lights and Billie talking to him with the same voice, and will just have to live with his first Koviashuvik stories. By the way, did anyone ever find the thief who cleaned out the cabin?
I live in Alaska. I couldn't have read a more enjoyable book.......1999-05-11
Sam's book, written from his cabin 100 miles north of the arctic circle, is a contemporary adventure story par excellence. I'm a recent University graduate in sustainable agriculture now living in Alaska. I appreciate Sam's view of living with the land, not just upon it.
Wrights philosophy of life........1999-04-20
Edge of Tomorrow By Sam Wright Reviewed by Frank Kadish
Few people are able to synthesize their lives from being born and raised in the west, to being a scientist, to become a minister in a free thinking liberal church, to an be outdoorsman and to put into practice his philosophy by combining it with living off the land as our ancestors did. My wife bought the book at our meeting of our group interested in communing with nature. I spent the last three hours reading it in one gulp. It has been as satisfying an afternoon as I have had in many a year.
Sam structures his philosophy and experience with the calendar and the events of the year in his in his cabin just below the Arctic Circle. His wisdom comes thru the stories he tells and the parables that he creates. With his wide-ranging experience in life, his story becomes an adventure of the mind.

Deep in the granite hills of eastern Arizona in 1880, H.C. Day founded the Lazy B ranch, where U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor and her brother Alan spent their youth, a time they recall in this affectionate joint memoir.
"We belonged to the Lazy B, and it belonged to each of us," write O'Connor and Day. "We thought it would always be there." Weathering events from the Great Depression to cyclical drought, they worked the ranch's 300 square miles alongside a colorful crew of cowboys, learning the ways of cattle, horses, and people, lessons they share in well-turned anecdotes. They also learned a system of values that "was simple and unsophisticated and the product of necessity," one that has followed them into the larger world. Court watchers and fans of Western writing alike will take pleasure in this multigenerational account of life on the range. --Gregory McNamee
Book Description
Now, for the first time in paperback, here is the remarkable story of Sandra Day O’Connor’s family and early life, her journey to adulthood in the American Southwest that helped make her the woman she is today—the first female justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, and one of the most powerful women in America. In this illuminating and unusual book, Sandra Day O’Connor tells, with her brother, Alan, the story of the Day family, and of growing up on the harsh yet beautiful land of the Lazy B ranch in Arizona.
Laced throughout these stories about three generations of the Day family, and everyday life on the Lazy B, are the lessons Sandra and Alan learned about the world, self-reliance, and survival, and how the land, people, and values of the Lazy B shaped them. This fascinating glimpse of life in the Southwest in the last century recounts an important time in American history, and provides an enduring portrait of an independent young woman on the brink of becoming one of the most prominent figures in America.
Customer Reviews:
An All-American Ranch Family.......2006-12-10
I loved reading this memoir about growing up on a huge cattle ranch in the American southwest. Sandra Day O'Connor and her brother H. Alan Day write from the heart in an easy to read book with lots of pictures. This is a tribute to their parents, a portrait of a colorful childhood in a remote setting on the Arizona border. The Day family raised cattle for a living; real cowboys worked the ranch, broke wild horses, built and mended fences, rounded up cattle, drilled wells, and built windmills. The children participated in all aspects of ranch life.
The story is about three generations of a family surviving on an arid and strange land - what the land taught them and how they coped with extremes of drought and distance. Individual stories of the cowboys, their love of horses and cattle and other animals are portrayed in a warm and loving way, as if the authors are smiling as they remember those happy days and their parents who taught and encouraged Sandra, Alan, and their sister Ann; the fun times, hard work, windmills and wells, rodeos, the first train thru the area, school, and so much more.
Short chapters, wonderful pictures, and a pleasure to read about a part of America where it truly was "home on the range", and where the cattle industry flourished over a span of a century. Thank you authors for sharing. The quotations are priceless. Here is one of them: When Time, who steals our years away, Shall steal our pleasure, too. The Memory of the past will stay, And half our joys renew. (Thomas Moore, "song")
A Very Impressive Lady!.......2006-07-07
"Lazy B," like the title implies, is the story of Sandra Day O'Connor and her younger brother growing up on a ranch in south-eastern Arizona. They grew up in an isolated environment that mandated self-reliance and initiative. Sandra received much of her formal education through riding the train to El Paso to stay with her maternal grandparents while attending a local girls' school. Her father had wanted to attend Stanford but the responsibilities of taking over the family ranch prevented that. Sandra O'Connor was able to achieve that for him, where she excelled academically, was then inspired by one of her instructors to study law (also at Stanford), met her husband (and also dated classmate William Rehnquist), and then struggled to begin a law career at a time that women had almost no such opportunity. (Despite Sandra graduating from Stanford Law #2 in her class, her early job searches were at best met with "Can you type?")
Then it was on to Phoenix where she started a law partnership, then moved to the Attorney General's office, became elected to the State Senate, became a Superior Court Judge, was promoted to the Arizona Court of Appeals by Governor Babbitt (D), and then selected by President Reagan to the Supreme Court.
Personal Note: In the late 1970s I appeared in Judge O'Connor's court as a witness and was astounded at her astute (and polite) questioning of one of the attorney's. Later, I witnessed the buzz as those who knew her stopped to congratulate her Supreme Court appointment. And most recently I had the opportunity to hear her and her brother give a presentation on this book - very insightful, witty, and again - polite. (She autographed my copy!)
An inspiring person!
An image of the old Southwest.......2006-02-25
This book meant a lot to me on many levels, a special tale for this transplanted Southwesterner. I was attracted first because of the co-author, who is one of Our Country's great ladies. She and her brother have put together an inside look at life in the Southwest, the cattle ranch family life, that is no more. A whole chapter on rain and what it means in an arid land. Their loving but reserved father and how he made a living off the land. It reminded me of my own stern but loving father - when dads were supposed to be that way. The ranch life, the family and characters that inhabited it are fascinating. Wonderful story of a different place and time.
O'Connor reminisces about her childhood.......2005-08-31
This book is a colorful portrait of the world O'Connor grew up in. It is simple and lovely - very little mention of her later life in the law.
Ranch Stories.......2005-08-05
This book contains the childhood memoirs of Justice O'Connor and her brother, H. Alan Day. They grew up on a ranch in Arizona in the 1930s and 1940s where their lives revolved around cattle, horses, and water. In this book, they describe what ranch life was like during those times. They tell stories about the cowboys who worked on their ranch, the roundups they participated in, and some of their favorite animals. Growing up on the ranch entailed a lot of hard work, and their father, a perfectionist himself, kept very high standards for his help and his children.
O'Connor and Day begin the book by tracing the history of the ranch, how it came into their family, and how their family developed it over the years. A central issue in the book is water, how they established and maintained their wells, how water sources were used in determining grazing rights on public lands, and how they managed water use over the years. Towards the end of the book, they discuss the changes brought about by the mushrooming of land use regulations. They were quite disturbed by seeing the offices of land management, once staffed by 2-4 people, eventually being filled by hundreds of employees, all needing tasks to engage in, and many lacking practical experience on the land. As they describe it, the overstaffing and over-regulating of the land management agency made it much more difficult for ranchers to make ranching pay in the Southwest.
The stories of ranch life are absolutely fascinating for the window they provide on this part of American history. This is very much a book about cowboys and cattle, and not a book about O'Connor's professional life, so there is very little material included about her higher education or career. Instead, we come to see her as a simple ranch girl, married in a barn, with seating on hay bales covered with canvas. Who would have thought that a kid growing up on a ranch an hour from town, who had no running water or other amenities, would eventually find herself serving as a justice on the Supreme Court? While the book is quite engaging, it can be a little repetitive in places, perhaps because of the dual authorship. The political commentary about the land management agency can also be a little heavy-handed, given the general nature of the rest of the book. In general though, as a storehouse for memories of cowboy life, this is a great resource coming from a somewhat unexpected source.
