      Book Description

Becoming a Team puts the ideas, advice, and tools students need to successfully enter the workplace where employer demands "to work as a team" are intensifying. This text blends the latest research on "teams" with an assortment of assessments and exercises. Central to its approach is the requirement that students actively participate in class teams that form for the duration of the course. Roy Herrenkohl's, teaching experience in Lehigh's Business School's Executive Education courses led him to develop a course on "Teams" - a course based on student needs and one which has been taught in a variety of subject areas including business and engineering. In addition to teaching, he does research on teamwork and employee empowerment and also program evaluation research assessing the impact of educational, social and industrial training activities. Becoming a Team: Achieving a Goal will be a valuable resource for teachers and students alike in many arenas in which teamwork is taught and practiced.

The first edition of Statistics and the Evaluation of Evidence for Forensic Scientists established itself as a highly regarded authority on this area.  Fully revised and updated, the second edition provides significant new material on areas of current interest including:

The title presents comprehensive coverage of the statistical evaluation of forensic evidence.  It is written with the assumption of a modest mathematical background and is illustrated throughout with up-to-date examples from a forensic science background.

The clarity of exposition makes this book ideal for all forensic scientists, lawyers and other professionals in related fields interested in the quantitative assessment and evaluation of evidence.

'There can be no doubt that the appreciation of some evidence in a court of law has been greatly enhanced by the sound use of statistical ideas and one can be confident that the next decade will see further developments, during which time this book will admirably serve those who have cause to use statistics in forensic science.'

                      Book Description

Louis Armstrong. "Satchmo." To millions of fans, he was just a great entertainer. But to jazz aficionados, he was one of the most important musicians of our times--not only a key figure in the history of jazz but a formative influence on all of 20th-century popular music. Set against the backdrop of New Orleans, Chicago, and New York during the "jazz age", Collier re-creates the saga of an old-fashioned black man making it in a white world. He chronicles Armstrong's rise as a musician, his scrapes with the law, his relationships with four wives, and his frequent feuds with fellow musicians Earl Hines and Zutty Singleton. He also sheds new light on Armstrong's endless need for approval, his streak of jealousy, and perhaps most important, what some consider his betrayal of his gift as he opted for commercial success and stardom. A unique biography, knowledgeable, insightful, and packed with information, it ends with Armstrong's death in 1971 as one of the best-known figures in American entertainment.

                      Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Just someone showing off about how much he read about jazz History.......2006-11-02

I was completely disapointed by this book. SInce the begining the author is only taking advantage of the trapped reader to show him how much he knows about the origins of technical jazz. There is really little about Louis and his lif per se. The author rather gives a rough background stating that little is known (he shouldn't have written a book about such a personality if little was known about him)and the few facts that he states he refutes arguing they are not true or completely true. Even refering to Louis autobiography trying to demonstrate that the artist himself was wrong in his own words.

Just a well written account of Jazz origins dressed up as a Louis Armstrong Biography, maybe the only way James Lincoln Collier could sell a copy. Disguising the buyer and cheating on the reader.

                      Strongly not recomended !!!

5 out of 5 stars The definitive Satchmo biography.......2004-12-11

Collier did a great job! His historiography is as brilliant as ever. It seems to me that the mainstream of Jazz so-called "scholars" don't like Collier because he's got no race bias and because of his impartiality. Actually, Mr. Collier is the best American writer on the subject, as he knows musical theory and is also a fine researcher.

After three years of cooperation with author Jan Jarboe Russell, Lady Bird Johnson ended her participation in this biography when she got a look at an essay Russell published about LBJ's infidelities in 1997. Russell paints a fascinating portrait of Johnson--a far tougher and shrewder woman than the dutiful image she presented as first lady in the 1960s--but she also unsparingly depicts LBJ as a mighty poor husband, something his intensely loyal spouse could never countenance. When she met Lyndon Johnson in 1934, friends couldn't imagine what smart, rich, 21-year-old Lady Bird (a nickname acquired in childhood) saw in a crude, impoverished young politician whose ego far outstripped his achievements. But she was used to overbearing men--her father was one--and the pragmatic young woman walked into marriage with her eyes wide open. She supported LBJ unquestioningly, not just emotionally but with the income from her business dealings, and quietly relished the exciting life into which he swept her. While making clear her distaste for aspects of the Johnsons' marital bargain, Russell nonetheless offers a nuanced account of a complex relationship in which Lady Bird played a more forceful, equal role than many realized. This revisionist biography has purpose and bite. --Wendy Smith

                              Book Description

A revealing biography of Lady Bird Johnson with startling new insights into her marriage to Lyndon Baines Johnson and her unexpectedly strong impact on his presidency.

Long obscured by her husband's shadow, Claudia "Lady Bird" Johnson emerges in this first comprehensive biography as a figure of surprising influence and the centering force for LBJ, a man who suffered from extreme mood swings and desperately needed someone to help control his darker impulses.

Expertly researched and written, Lady Bird draws from rare conversations with the former First Lady and from interviews with key members of Johnson's inner circle of friends, family, and advisers. With chapters such as "Motherless Child," "A Ten-Week Affair," and "LBJ's Midlife Crisis," Lady Bird sheds new light on Mrs. Johnson's childhood, on her amazing acumen as a businesswoman, and on the central role she played in her husband's life and political career. A vital link to the Kennedys during LBJ's uneasy tenure as vice president and a voice of conscience on civil rights, Lady Bird is portrayed here as a political force, strikingly different from the somewhat minor figure depicted in previous works on LBJ. Especially fascinating today, in light of the enormous attention now focused on the private lives of our leaders, are the personal details about her marriage to a man whose extramarital affairs were widely discussed.

In this intimate portrait, Russell shows us the private Lady Bird -- not only a passionate conservationist but a remarkable woman who greatly influenced her husband, his administration, and the country.

I saw a whole new Lady Bird through this book. Ms. Russell did an excellent job of portraying Lady Bird. This seemingly quiet, reserved woman is a woman of great courage, dependable, stable, a role model for any age of woman. I am an independent person and I was so inspired by her character. I have never been very fond of the President, but I can see where he would have never become successful had it not been for his wife. She was a behind the scenes wife, pushing him forward; so wanting to help people and make this country a bettter place to live. I could identify with many of the situations between her and her husband. Some might consider what she went through and endured in her marriage as a weakness, but I consider it a strength. Wonderful woman, in my opinion, one of the most independent and best first lady's of all. I would compare her to Eleanor Roosevelt. Hillary was a strong first lady, but this one we have now has done nothing for us women. She is a leave it to beaver person and that just isn't realistic in or world today unless one happens to be in the same position as her in wealth, etc. Lady Bird shines and this book is so well written. Would like to hear more from this author.

Lady Bird is the unusually revealing biography of Lady Bird Johnson, the wife of President Lyndon Johnson by Jan Jarboe Russell (a contributing editor at "Texas Monthly" who has covered texas politics and culture for more than thirty years). Skillfully researched and smoothly written, grounded in conversations with the former First Lady and interviews with her inner circle of friends, family, and advisors, Lady Bird shows both the public and private sides of a strong, determined, and remarkable woman whose influence on her husband, and through him America, was considerable. Highly recommended.

Well edited, well researched. For lovers of strong women and American History. Lady Bird, like her husband, has suffered mischaracterizatons for decades; she is a truly amazing woman who was always classified as dowdy, and a throwback to Bess Truman, while in reality was as smart and savvy as Hillary Clinton. She has been ahead of her time since the 1930's and is someone career woman and independent thinkers should respect and admire.

2 out of 5 stars Not Enough Lady Bird.......2001-10-19

I felt that the authors writing style was about that of a middle school student. Unfortunately, there are few books on the life of Lady Bird, and I did learn quite a bit about her life. I was disappointed that once LBJ's presidency was over, the book ended in a few short chapters. The author flew through the last 30+ years! I find it hard to believe that Lady Birds life didn't include much that could have been included in the book. Also, one of the women I admire most in American history is Congresswoman Barbara Jordan of Texas, who was a close friend of LBJ's. There is a photograph of Ms. Jordan with Lady Bird included in this book and the author did not even mention her in the caption that accompanies it. Tacky!!

After reading Robert Caro's masterful biographies (Volumes 1 and 2) of LBJ, I yearned to learn more about the background of Lady Bird--specifically what contributed to her not only staying married to LBJ but to singlemindedly propelling his career forward. Well, Russell's book certainly disappoints. It is very poorly and awkwardly written and edited. The only new information that I gleaned from this book was gossipy. If one wishes to learn substantive information about Lady Bird (and of course about LBJ), Caro's biographies are a far superior source.

The rollicking story of the Leadville waitress who reached the top of Newport society—and a permanent place in American lore—as a heroine of the Titanic disaster. Miss Bancroft's biography gives the true story of the unsinkable lady from Colorado and makes an amusing contrast with the legend.

                                              Book Description

Francisco Ferrer Guardia, a theoretical anarchist and founder of La Escuela Moderna, was born in 1849 near Barcelona. In 1901, Ferrer opened La Escuela Moderna. The professed goal of the school was to educate the working class in a rational, secular and non-coercive setting, but its high tuition allowed only wealthy middle class students to attend. It was privately hoped that when the time was ripe for revolutionary action, these students would be motivated to lead the working classes. La Escuela Moderna grew rapidly. By 1906, thirty four schools with over 1,000 students were directly or indirectly influenced by the school and its textbooks.

In 1906 an employee of Ferrer's publishing firm threw a bomb at King Alphonso XIII's wedding party. Police speculated that Ferrer had encouraged Morral to throw the bomb. Ferrer was arrested, but released a year later, due to insufficient evidence.

During Ferrer's incarceration, La Escuela Moderna was shut down and would not open its doors again. Ferrer soon realized, however, that he had lost his ability to influence directly the educational movement in Spain. His old interest in anarcho-syndicalism reemerged, and he began to devote more and more of his time to the Catalan labor movement.

In July of 1909, political events in Spain spun out of control. Spontaneous protests broke out in the streets, evolving into a massive general strike. Revolutionary leaders, anxious to seize the moment, were ultimately unprepared and thus lost control of the crowds. The result was five days of mob rule known today as the Tragic Week.

On July 28, martial law was declared throughout Spain, and a brutal military suppression continued until September. Anyone deemed dangerous to the government was jailed. Francisco Ferrer was arrested late in September. A hurried trial ensued, in which he was accused of fomenting the insurrection. Ferrer had very little, if anything, to do with the uprising, but false evidence and forced confessions were produced. The government still believed that Ferrer had instigated the assassination attempt on the king in 1906 and wanted revenge. Ferrer was put to death by firing squad on October 13, 1909.

Because Ferrer was well-known internationally, his execution caused a sensation throughout North America and Western Europe. In Great Britain, George Bernard Shaw, H. G. Wells, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle protested with Peter Kropotkin and other anarchists. Ferrer was named a martyr for free thought and, by his execution, became one of the most famous of Spanish anarchists.

                                                  Book Description

Time Shared: The Miracle of Transplant is a study of how one woman survived a life-or-death struggle until she received a life-saving liver transplant in 2000 to get a second chance at a life she was losing to a silent disease that was undiagnosed for twenty-four years.

Readers will appreciate her layman's approach to the world of transplant. Time Shared: Miracles of Transplant is not a medical book, although it is very informative for those awaiting transplant, their families, those suffering from hepatitis, cirrhosis or end-stage liver disease.

Within the pages of information, you may cry at her very personal and gripping tale of endurance and laugh at her humor on her journey to near death and on the road back to recovery.

                                                  Thanks Mrs. McCarty

5 out of 5 stars Insightful read on organ transplant & organ donation.......2003-01-12

This read really brings to the lay person a very real view of the many stages a patient's mind & body goes through in her illness, it's diagnosis, and the ultimate gift of another chance at life. Only someone who has experienced what Ms. McCarty has can take the rest of us on her journey. In her book she takes us on the complete gamut of emotions she experienced in her quest for her miracle. She tells her story in terms you can easily understand, with wisdon & humor. I highly recommend this book to anyone waiting for transplant, their families who are also so greatly affected by their illness, and also to anyone who might have any doubt that donating their organs can make miracles happen for others.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for ALL of us.......2002-12-24

This woman knows her way around severe illness. I can tell she has been there, done that. Everybody needs the information she gives us in the book to save our own livers and lives and the lives of others when we no longer need our own organs. Read this book and be informed about organ donation. Thanks, Liv
