Book Description
This book includes the proceedings of the Workshop held in Madrid, April 1999 to celebrate 2 years of successful operation of the first Spanish small scientific satellite in orbit. It contains discussions about the overall philosophy of small mission programs, the design of the satellite and its payload as well as the most relevant scientific outcome of the mission. Also included are additional contributions to the workshop, which are of importance to Minisat 01 in order to put its results within context.
Finally, the future of small missions for space sciences is reviewed together with the main technological challenges for new studies.
Out of the technological and scientific results of
Minisat 01, the measurement of the EUV airglow spectrum and the flux of some stars in the same range can be highlighted together with the dismiss of the massive neutrino decay theory.
The high-energy experiment analyzed the characterization of the radiation environment in LEO and the behaviour of different kind of detectors, as well as the use of coded masks for imaging and the measurement of some specific sources.
The book's level is intended for specialists in EUV and Hard X-Ray astrophysicists as well as for engineers and technicians involved in space science experiments and missions.

Rare insights.......2007-01-09
Dear Readers,
This book brings back many memories about the times after WWWII. I was born in 1944 in East Germany and have experienced many of the situations mentioned in this book. But since I am not a writer, I would have never been able to put these experiences on paper. I find the stories worth reporting and preserving for future generations. All too easily do we forget and repeat the mistakes of the past. This book is a heartfelt memory worth reading. I am looking forward to more books from this author.
Waste of Money.......2006-11-28
There is a disclaimer at the front of this book stating that it is self-edited owing to the fact that the material is too personal. I suspect the more truthful statement would be that the author didn't want to spend the money on an editor for this self-published book - and it shows. I can't remember ever actually throwing away a book before I finished it as I did with this one and I mean literally into the trash basket.
There is no question that the subject matter, the recovery of Germany after the devastation of WWII, is of great interest and mostly ignored by US literature. What does one, civilian or soldier, do in the days immediately after a war when one's country is the loser? Where does one start, standing amidst the ruins of a city with no food nor shelter to be had, worthless money in one's pocket and the victorious enemy, righteously full of contempt, running the show? All remarkable questions.
Evoking compassion from a reader comes with clear, simple statements about the facts of the situation, allowing the reader's own conscience to discover the emotional conection to the writer. It does not come from pathetic whining about the events of the time and complaining how others didn't understand their own insensitivity.
This book seems like a therapy session for the author without the professional guidance of a therapist present. It's self-indulgent to the point of not even having a editor for the prose. I mean, come on, were all those explanation points really that personal!?
More than a memoir.........2006-02-06
Much has been written about World War II from a historical
point of view. However, what has not been adequately covered
by historians is the devastating effect of the War on the German
people who were also victims of Hitler. In Birth of a Tumbleweed, Inge Perreault chronicles her childhood, teenage years, and young adulthood in Cologne, Germany, in graphic detail that includes her family, torn apart by the two Germanys, the physical, psychological, social and community trauma she endured growing up. How would an average American endure life during war time in their homeland? Read Birth of a Tumbleweed and you will come away very grateful for life in the USA! A remarkable story of hope, struggle, and enduring strength not just to survive, but to succeed in life!
An Incredible Journey!.......2006-01-26
Inge Perrault has done an amazing job bringing us through the stages of a life none of us in this country could ever imagine. It made me laugh and cry, and brought me deep into the little girls heart and mind. Her descriptions of the country were so detailed I feel like I have been there myself. It's an amazing journey, one I think everyone growing up with all the priviledges of our society today should read. It wasn't that long ago, yet most of us have fogotten all to easily what war does to a society for years to come. The courage it must have taken to write and remember all this is astounding, and one knows where that courage comes from after reading Birth of a Tumbleweed. I know it will passed around in my family as a must read.
War is hell for everyone involved.......2005-04-03
My mom was born in Southern Germany just before the war started. Her and her family went through years of existing on barely any food, never enough blankets and clothes to keep warm in those bitter cold winters. She still remembers the bombs falling near her home and to this day has nightmares about it. "Birth of a Tumbleweed" gives a glimpse into the world of a family who was just trying to survive. Somehow after the war, all Germans were blamed for the sick ideas of Hitler. Inge's generation had to grow up with a heavy load of guilt on their shoulders, guilt thrown upon them not just by the Allied, but by the German government itself.
Inge's book took a lot of courage to write, since esp. her generation was expected to just shut up and take the blame. I understand why she moved away.
Reading Inge's book gave me a better understanding of what my mom went through. It also encouraged me to stand my ground and to not take any blame for anything that happened back then. (Yes, there are still people out there pointing fingers...)

Book Description
Thurgood Marshall's extraordinary contribution to civil rights and overcoming racism is more topical than ever, as the national debate on race and the overturning of affirmative action policies make headlines nationwide. Howard Ball, author of eighteen books on the Supreme Court and the federal judiciary, has done copious research for this incisive biography to present an authoritative portrait of Marshall the jurist.
Born to a middle-class black family in "Jim Crow" Baltimore at the turn of the century, Marshall's race informed his worldview from an early age. He was rejected by the University of Maryland Law School because of the color of his skin. He then attended Howard University's Law School, where his racial consciousness was awakened by the brilliant lawyer and activist Charlie Houston. Marshall suddenly knew what he wanted to be: a civil rights lawyer, one of Houston's "social engineers." As the chief attorney for the NAACP, he developed the strategy for the legal challenge to racial discrimination. His soaring achievements and his lasting impact on the nation's legal system--as the NAACP's advocate, as a federal appeals court judge, as President Lyndon Johnson's solicitor general, and finally as the first African American Supreme Court Justice--are symbolized by Brown v. Board of Education, the landmark case that ended legal segregation in public schools.
Using race as the defining theme, Ball spotlights Marshall's genius in working within the legal system to further his lifelong commitment to racial equality. With the help of numerous, previously unpublished sources, Ball presents a lucid account of Marshall's illustrious career and his historic impact on American civil rights.
Customer Reviews:
Tells what he did.......2003-12-10
"A Defiant Life" presents the heroic life of Thurgood Marshall and his fight against racism in a compelling manner. The book does not tell a feel bad/feel angry/feel good story. There is little recourse to anecdotes, and hardly any moments for emotional release. Instead it tells what Marshall did as an advocate for the minorities - for example how he travelled many times to the South facing mortal danger to argue important cases. It also tells us of his opinions, and how they influenced his use of the legal system to help the oppressed. After reading this book, one comes away knowing that Marshall was one of the great men of 20th century America. And one comes away understanding the reasons for the far reaching implications of several Supreme Court cases.
It's never only black or white.......2000-04-05
Gut wrenching in its honesty, thought provoking in the truest sense of the word. It allowed me to take a step back from racial madness and see through another pair of eyes. No law can change people's attitudes, morality is judged by the majority, this book shows us. And yet it had a hopeful note beneath the surface. Initially I was put off by the inhuman, thesis sounding title.. do not make my mistake-read this book and absorb culture at its ugliest (and most honest).
Disappointing in the extreme.......1999-01-22
From its rather droll beginnings: "Thurgood Marshall was born in 1908," Howard Ball's biography, A Defiant Life : Thurgood Marshall and the Persistence of Racism in America, only goes downhill. His writing style is bland and the story line follows no distinguishable pattern, aimless flowing from point to point with few overarching themes.
Unlike Juan Williams' Thurgood Marshall: American Revolutionary (a truly great biography focusing on the personal as well as the legal issues of this American giant) or Mark Tushnet's Making Civil Rights Law and Making Constitutional Law (two books that provide an excellent legal analysis of Marshall's work), Ball's book repeats stories and facts that are already well-worn and understood. Most tragic, one gets little understanding about what drove Marshall to fight the brutal system of Jim Crow oppression and led him to become such a forceful advocate of individual rights on the bench.
The personal and legal story of Marshall is much more interesting and deserves a much better biography. Best to skip this one.

A poignant story of friendship gained and lost.......2003-12-24
I first became aware of the friend of Lyndon John and Richard Russell after reading MASTERS OF THE SENATE. John Caro touches on the relationship and as a result I was interested in finding out more about these two masters of the senate.
Goldsmith, who was a Washington insider, depicts the rise and fall of the friendship and shows how in some respects it disentigrated because of the passage of time and the failure of the two men, especially Russell to adopt to change.
Goldsmith's LBJ is much less of a "user" of Russell than Caro's and Goldsmith's Russell is much for fragile than the one portrayed by Caro. But for those interested in the LBJ years and the beginnings of the war in Viet Nam, this is a meaningful work. LBJ is once again seen as a somewhat tragic figure. Russell was very much a father figure to him, but yet in the end he did not attend his funeral or visit him in his last illness.
For those interested in the legacy of LBJ it is well worth the fairly quick read.

Book Description
In Songs of the Fluteplayer, the charm and challenge of the spectacularly beautiful American Southwest are irresistibly captured by a woman who risked much to discover a new life and greater meaning there. Sharman Apt Russell and her husband moved to the Mimbres Valley in southwestern New Mexico in order to lead a simpler yet more substantial life. Their efforts to be self-sufficient-building an adobe house, giving birth at home, growing their own food-shattered many ideals and forced compromises but also renewed their ties to each other and kindled their respect for the land and its people. The American Southwest that Russell fell in love with comes to life vividly in her writing. From Navajo weavers to illegal Mexican workers, trading posts to prehistoric pottery, water rights disputes to the omnipresent fluteplayer Kokopelli-the energy and wonder of the Southwest is celebrated in this enchanting book.
Customer Reviews:
Moving collection of essays about author's life in the SW........1996-12-28
In this lovely collection of essays, the author, Russell, explores the relationship between the American search for mythological Home to the landscape, the community and the self. In her title essay, she writes about memories of her father, a former test pilot in the Air Force, who died while setting a new speed record in the X-2 over another desert in California, when Russell was still a child. Her memories of him are recovered through her exploration of the image of the Kokopelli man, part of the mythological landscape of the Southwest that she struggles to identify with in this search for Home. In the other essays, Russell tries to balance her utopian ideal of a quiet, slow-paced life in a small rural community with the reality of the isolation and financial struggle of raising a family and building a home in the harsh, though stunningly beautiful, landscape of the Southwest desert, along with the politics and problems that arise in their eccentric and somewhat transitory community. Russell writes to understand, to make meaning--and the writing seems to discover itself over and over, allowing the reader a fresh journey, no matter the number of readings. Beautiful language

Money conquered land. The postulates of freedom tri umphed over the traditions of slavery. Day dawned over west ern Europe. The rising bourgeois class entered into possession of new fields. Starting from Holland, it created a colonial power whose gigantic proportions were rivalled only by the vastness of the wealth which colonial enterprise brought back to the mother country. Starting from England, which It transformed into the factory of the world, the bourgeoisie made that country supreme over all the markets of the world and all the sources of raw materials. Setting out from France, the bourgeoisie pressed the greatest of all military powers into its service, the better to safeguard the social successes of its emancipation. In Its craving for activity, it shrank from no difficulties...

When Laurie Stone won the 1996 National Book Critics Circle award for excellence in reviewing, her impassioned acceptance speech describing new trends in autobiographical writing sketched a blueprint for this collection. "Memoirs of Hurt, Rage, and Desire" is the subtitle's entirely accurate characterization of eight essays written in a style that Stone dubs "post-therapeutic." What does that mean? A flinty disinclination to comfort is the most notable trait: these writers bare psychic and physical wounds most of us would hesitate to discuss with anyone but our therapist, and they disdain the easy reassurance of tabloid TV, which assumes that getting everything out in the open will make it OK. The pseudonymous Terminator's "Baby Doll," a horrific account of his battered childhood, is the collection's most disturbing entry; Stone's "Hump" is the most conventional (overbearing mother, some consensual, not-too-heavy sadomasochistic sex). Book authors Catherine Texier (Breakup), Lois Gould (Mommy Dressing), Peter Trachtenberg (Seven Tattoos), and Jerry Stahl (Permanent Midnight) are represented with shorter pieces just as bitingly candid as their full-length works. Not for the sentimental or the squeamish, these stories are compulsively readable and hard to forget. --Wendy Smith
Book Description
Close to the Bone scouts the territories of sex, the family, loneliness, the city, addiction, and AIDS, but these are not passive tales of victimization. Rather, these writers speak in voices that are unflinching, unerring, and filled with revelation.
Customer Reviews:
GREAT ANTHOLOGY OF THE PERSONAL ESSAY!.......2004-09-25
Close to the Bone is one of the best anthologies of its kind and it is a wonderful sampling of the modern personal essay. "We could all go on Oprah for some reason or other," editor Laurie Stone writes. "It's not enough that creepy things have happened, since everyone's life, prodded enough, looks like a crime scene with chalk outlines." In this collection, Stone includes authors who have found "the story in their experience."
This is the first appearance of young J.T. LeRoy (here credited as Terminator). LeRoy is the author of the autobiographical novel Sarah, about a pre-teen transvestite prostitute who hustles with his mother at West Virginia truck stops. The essay "Baby Doll" functions as a prequel to that novel.
There are other great essays by authors such as Phillip Lopate, Peter Trachtenberg, and Stone herself. Close to the Bone can be funny and disturbing by turns, but it is never boring.
Close to the Heart!.......2001-05-05
This is a book where I found a lot of great writers! This is the book that first published JT LeRoy under the pseudonym "Terminator". His story "Baby Doll" is as powerful, moving and unforgettable as his novel "Sarah" which I bought after reading this book. Jerry Stahl's story in here is genius, anyone that knows a fledgling drug addict will benefit greatly by reading Stahl's story. Anyone interested in writing that is honest, moving and inspires self-examination, this THE book to get!
Memoirs with attitude.......2000-03-20
For those who like to read and write quality memoirs, the best thing about the book was its introduction -- which makes the point that quality memoirs are "post-therapeutic" and dwell in ambiguity. Too bad too many of these memoirs fail to live up to the guides Stone set for herself.
The best memoirs here were the least sensational -- Lopate and Texier's detailed, anticlimactic stories of their fathers and families were head and shoulders above the rest. Some inclusions, like Lois Gould's, were well-written but did not really stand on their own. The worst were the most sensational -- Terminator's silly cartoon sex comedy, which sounds too fabricated to ring true. Stone's own entry is credible, but when she starts going into her own sex life, I just went into snooze-a-thon mode and flipped the pages until she started talking about human nature again. Why do these "hip" writers love sex so much and do such a bad job writing about it?
