Book Description
This book is the result of a spirited debate stimulated by a recent meeting of the Society of Multivariate Experimental Psychology. Although the viewpoints span a range of perspectives, the overriding theme that emerges states that significance testing may still be useful if supplemented with some or all of the following -- Bayesian logic, caution, confidence intervals, effect sizes and power, other goodness of approximation measures, replication and meta-analysis, sound reasoning, and theory appraisal and corroboration. br br The book is organized into five general areas. The first presents an overview of significance testing issues that sythesizes the highlights of the remainder of the book. The next discusses the debate in which significance testing should be rejected or retained. The third outlines various methods that may supplement current significance testing procedures. The fourth discusses Bayesian approaches and methods and the use of confidence intervals versus significance tests. The last presents the philosophy of science perspectives. br br Rather than providing definitive prescriptions, the chapters are largely suggestive of general issues, concerns, and application guidelines. The editors allow readers to choose the best way to conduct hypothesis testing in their respective fields. For anyone doing research in the social sciences, this book is bound to become "must" reading. br

statistical controversey.......2000-08-15
This was a stimulating and interesting book which helped to review the whole topic as applied to the social sciences. This would of use to both undergraduate and informative to graduates who may not be aware of the arguments within it.

Book Description
A fundamental, profound review of the key issues relating to the early universe and the physical processes that occurred in it. The interplay between cosmic microwave background radiation, large scale structure, and the dark matter problem are stressed, with a central focus on the crucial issue of the phase transitions in the early universe and their observable consequences: baryon symmetry, baryogenesis and cosmological fluctuations.
There is an interplay between cosmology, statistical physics and particle physics in studying these problems, both at the theoretical and the experimental / observational levels. Special contributions are devoted to primordial and astrophysical black holes and to high energy cosmic rays and neutrino astrophysics. There is also a special section devoted to the International Space Station and its scientific utilization.

Book Description
Textiles define civilizations as much as architecture, religion or language. From the morning of time, man has judged his fellow man by the fabrics he uses to dress himself and his home. Chinese silks, English flannel, Scots tartans, Hawaiian shirts, Indian saris all immediately identify a time and a place. In 4th century Imperial Rome, only the Emperor himself could wear purple and the manufacture of purple outside the royal dye works was a capital crime. Today we enjoy easy access to hundreds of textiles in hundreds of colors. This is an exhilarating luxury, as inconceivable for almost all man's existence as space travel was. It is a privilege we should cherish. In this book, Jamie Marshall's photographs capture not only the world's wondrous obsession with textiles and colors but also a flavor of what captivates designers - the joyous appeal of distant cultures and faraway lands.
Attempts to re-create the vibrant colours of the natural world have not always been easy - before the 19th century, "ultramarine blue was extracted from Lapis Lazuli. Vermilion was as costly as gold." Behind the unassuming black cover of this book is a vivid celebration of the world of colour, from an Indian man's bright yellow turban to the delicate silvery-blue of a pile of small fish. This is a fascinating look at the long relationship between mand and colour, looking at the art, textiles and natural influences of different cultures around the world through a series if captivating pictures by travel photographer Jamie Marshall. - Wanderlust

Kept me interested.............................2001-05-22
I enjoyed reading this book very much, there is a richness and quality that is sincere. The family came to life in a humerous and sad way, but throughout there was the spirit of God guiding them. One of those books that you don't want to put down until you have read it from cover to cover!
Interesting and Informative.......2001-02-23
This book is easy yet interesting reading for all ages. The events dipicted about the South are very true to life. The personalities come to life and cause one to feel a part of the activities. It tells of an interesting mix of events that are both funny and sad. The people are vivid and easy to indentify. Underneath the different stories and historical events remains an unusual spiritual conviction that is a feeling rather than a written statement. All in all an entertaining and meaningful book.

Theodore Roosevelt, an Autobiography
ASIN: 0471024074 |
Book Description
"
A lively, entertaining and well-researched portrait of a zealous reformer during the historic crusade that successfully launched his career in government." —Booklist.
Commissioner Roosevelt The Story of Theodore Roosevelt and the New York City Police, 1895 - 1897.
When Theodore Roosevelt took office as New York's police commissioner in 1895, the Metropolitan Police force was barely more than a confederation of thugs and petty criminals whose chief activity was to extort protection money from local merchants. The thirty-seven-year-old Roosevelt rode roughshod over the corrupt bosses and power brokers and transformed the police into one of the first modern law enforcement agencies in the world.
Combining the best elements of biography and social history, Commissioner Roosevelt reveals a fascinating episode from the life of one of America's most colorful cities, and one of her most charismatic leaders.
Customer Reviews:
A better than average work, though a bit on the shallow side.......2001-01-08
I have always wanted to learn more about Teddy Roosevelt's two-year stint with the New York Police Department, and was thus thrilled to find Mr. Jeffer's book on Amamzon.com. While it does do a fairly good job of describing the events as they occurred during Roosevelt's tenure at the NYPD, I found the book on the whole to deliver a very surface treatment of the subject. It is, as one of the other reviewers noted, quite superficial, relying almost exlcusively on anecdotes which seem to have been gleaned from newspapers of the period. What the book is missing is any kind of meaningful insight into TR himself. I have always understood that TR was a prolific letter-writer. I think that this book would have benefitted greatly from the author spending more time relating TR's thoughts, which he must have undoubtedly conveyed many times in correspondence to friends and associates.
Glory Days.......2000-12-28
COMMISSIONER ROOSEVELT exhibits Theodore Roosevelt's true modus opporandae. There were indeed many obstacles in Roosevelt's path to making a better city police force, however, the American public was, in my opinion, persuaded by eloquent speaking and the media more so then they are today. In all likelihood there is no way Roosevelt could achieve such drastic reform results over a relatively short period of time in the modern world. However, Jeffers' book is not about that issue, this book is about displaying Roosevelt's true core beliefs and the willpower that was within a person who was weak and sickly as a child. Personally I would have liked to have seen more critical material in this book, however, it is a beautiful narrative of how one man was able to make a difference (with the help of the fledgling media). This book should be mandatory reading for all people in the law enforcement field today, it shows all the principals that American's hold dear condensed into one mortal being, Roosevelt.
Teddy Roosevelt Cleans Up Crime in Old New York.......2000-12-01
Commissioner Roosevelt is a great account of Theodore Roosevelt's tenure as New York City Police Commission President. As the head of the three-person board that oversaw the city's police, Roosevelt changed our notion of a modern police department. Even as he attempted to institute reforms he faced down police corruption, ethnic-group protests, government foot-dragging, and machine politics in the land of Tamany Hall. This firebrand commissioner would even prowl the gaslighted streets of Old New York looking for policemen asleep at their posts.
Join Theodore Roosevelt in this crusade to stop crime and corruption in New York. If you enjoyed Caleb Carr's fictional T.R. in The Alienist, you'll probably enjoy the real life crime-buster in Commissioner Roosevelt. (I liked Mr. Jeffers' real one better.) Anyone interested in politics, especially New York or ethnic politics, might like it too.
Magnificent Police Era History.......2000-04-06
The book covered the period of history just at the turn of the 20th Century. I found it to be very informative and made me feel like I was right there strolling the streets with Ted Roosevelt. Although the book is strong in its era coverage more attention should have been given to the various laws and acts that were in place at the time preventing "police" to perform their respective functions.
A readable biography, but rather superficial.......1998-11-06
I read this book after having read Jay S. Berman's Police Administration and Progressive Reform, which was written several years earlier. This is interesting, because Jeffer writes that his was the first book on this subject, despite the fact that he cites Berman in his bibliography and proceeds to cover the same ground. Jeffers book is readable but is shallow and superficial, consisting largely of anecdotes and summaries of newspaper accounts from the New York Times. Berman's book is far more scholarly and vastly better researched. Jeffers owes an apology to both his predecessor and his readers for claiming to have written a book that "needed to be written".

Book Description
Malinda Jenkins was born in 1848, the daughter of a subsistence farmer in Kentucky. Showing spunk early, she pridefully refused to attend school without the right textbooks and escaped as soon as possible from a large family that had “too much religion” and too little else.
She liked men and married three: a handsome lazybones, a kindly drunkard, and a chronic gambler. Malinda left her first husband in order to support herself and the children. Uneducated but willing to work hard and take risks, she established a boarding house in Texas, the first of many enterprises that would gradually bring financial independence.
With her third husband, Jenkins, the professional gambler, she bounced all over the West, from Wichita Falls to Oregon City to Tacoma to a lumber camp in Washington. She operated a beauty parlor in San Francisco and more boarding houses while Jenkins prospected for gold in Alaska, and in 1897 she crossed the Chilkoot Pass and joined him in Dawson, where they ran the Sour Dough Saloon. Later on they owned a racing stable.
When writer Jesse Lilienthal met her in 1930, Malinda was a widow in her eighties who spent every afternoon at the racetrack. Here is her lively story, told to Lilienthal and long out of print until now.

Book Description
Historians generally consider James K. Polk one of the most effective presidents in United States history. Many of them doubt, however, that President Polk would have been successful without the counsel of his wife Sarah. The president dominated his cabinet and trusted no oneexcept for his wife.
Sarah Childress Polk (1803-1891) was a highly educated woman who became President Polk's virtual secretary and more: She critiqued his speeches, evaluated his Cabinet decisions, and worked side by side with her husband. Mrs. Polk was praised for her astute views on matters of state by both Polk's supporters and his opponents. She outlived her husband by 42 years, and was often consulted by politicians who respected her opinions and trusted her instincts, including Confederate and Union officers in the Civil War. This is the story of a powerful and tireless first lady who became one of the most influential Americans of the middle and late nineteenth century.
