      Book Description

While the themes of managerial and organizational learning have become part of the discourse of management studies, the field has remained highly fragmented. The need to strengthen the links between theory and practice, between the principles enshrined in management education and the new trends emerging in contemporary organizational life, and among the many competing approaches to "learning" and "management" has long been recognized. John Burgoyne and Michael Reynolds provide a much-needed integrating framework for understanding the nature of management learning as process and practice. They introduce the context and history of management learning and offer a critical framework within which the key debates can be understood. They also provide a critical discussion of the values and purpose inherent in the practice and theory of management learning and chart the diverse external factors that influence and direct the processes of learning. The volume concludes with a look forward toward the future reconstruction of the field. The coherent approach offered by the volume is an essential resource for students and professionals concerned with the way managers and organizations learn. Management Learning succeeds in tying together theory and practice making it an essential resource for those interested in management education and development, human resource management, and managing change.

        Book Description

Prominent progress in science is inevitably associated with controversies. Thus, young researchers, in particular, have to learn how to persevere during the period of controversy and struggle for acceptance. Unfortunately, the skills needed are not taught in textbooks or monographs, which mostly describe the consensus of contemporary experts. This book, which is based on my own experiences as a scientist, describes the history of the progress made in auroral science and magnetospheric physics by providing examples of ideas, controversies, struggles, acceptance, and success in some instances. Although no general methodology (if any exists) is mentioned, I hope that the reader will learn about the history of progress in auroral science and examples (right or wrong) of dealing with the controversies.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book about auroral science.......2005-03-08

The Aurora offers us plenty of scientific data to explain. This wonderful book (which includes four beautiful full-color photos of the aurora) describes the experiences of the author, a great auroral scientist, in characterizing and explaining auroral phenomena.

Akasofu begins his story in 1860. In that year, R. C. Carrington observed an intense white light solar flare. About 16 hours later, a brilliant auroral display appeared over northern Europe and elsewhere. In the same year, E. Loomis showed that the aurora tends to appear along a fairly narrow belt centered around the northwest tip of Greenland.

In 1896, Kristen Birkeland proposed that auroras were caused by "cathode rays" (electrons) emitted by the Sun and guided towards the Earth's higher latitudes by the Earth's magnetic field. And in 1931, Sydney Chapman and Vincenzo Ferraro came up with the idea "of confinement of the Earth's magnetic field in a cavity carved in the solar gas flow."

Akasofu then tells of his own contributions to the field. In 1958, he went to the University of Alaska to study with Chapman. He noticed at once that the aurora "tends to appear in the northern sky in the evening, advances toward the zenith (or even the southern sky) of Fairbanks (gm lat 64.6 degrees), and recedes towards the northern sky in the morning." This shift had been well-known for at least two decades (and perhaps many millennia). But it was a "great surprise" for Akasofu that the aurora behaved this way in Fort Yukon too. And at Barrow. Auroral data from Siberia then led Akasofu to realize "that when an auroral arc is quiet in Alaska (in the midnight sky) it is also quiet over Siberia (in the evening sky), and in Canada (in the morning sky)." He then showed that during magnetic disturbances, the auroral ovals expand in area, with the equatorward auroral zone boundary moving to lower latitudes. From this he evolved the concept of a magnetospheric substorm. The auroral manifestation of this is the auroral substorm, the basic geomagnetic phenomenon associated with auroral activity.

The author covers a variety of topics associated with the aurora. One is about the Earth's dipole. Akasofu asks if it is really off-centered and inclined. Or is there a main dipole which is aligned with respect to the rotation axis and a few other dipoles at the surface of the Earth's core?

Another chapter is called the "myth of the emerging flux tubes." Sometimes we see pairs of sunspots. Flux tubes are one hypothesis that may explain them. But this is just a hypothesis. It requires more verification to be more than that.

Yet another interesting and useful chapter is on predicting geomagnetic storms from solar observations.

The author even suggests exploring for life on extraterrestrial planets by searching for oxygen emissions (the 557.7 nm "green line") in their aurora.

I was intrigued by Akasofu's thoughts about doing science. Auroral phenomena have plenty of patterns to them. However, no theory about them can explain all the data. As in other areas of science, researchers have too often tried to force their data to fit into some existing hypothesis. Unfortunately, some of the data are counterintuitive and simply don't fit. Besides, the phenomena are not exactly repeatable. As Akasofu says, "no two substorms are alike."

Akasofu tells us that a scientist must choose which observed facts are to be considered essential. Then one tries to derive a theory which explains these essential facts. It isn't easy, and one must keep an open mind. From what I have seen of auroral data, I have to agree.

I think all scientists, not just auroral scientists, could profit from reading this book.

          Book Description

Poled polymers doped with nonlinear optically active chromophores combine the large second order nonlinearity of the dopant dye molecules with the optical quality of the polymer. The material design flexibility afforded to doped polymers makes them attractive in a large variety of devices and applications. This book addresses the critical science and technology issues in the development and application of poled polymers, with an emphasis on the stabilization of poled polymers and their special applications to second harmonic generation (SHG) and electro-optic (EO) devices.

            Book Description

This monograph is devoted to the theory of hypercomplex systems with locally compact basis. Such systems were introduced by Yu. Berezansky and S. Krein in the 1950s and are a generalisation of the notion of a hypergroup (a family of generalised shift operators) which was introduced in the 1970s. The book gives a state-of-the-art account of hypercomplex systems theory. After the introductory chapter, it treats the Lie theory of hypercomplex systems and examples. Topics covered include Fourier transforms, the Plancherel theorem, the Peter-Weyl theorem, representation theory, duality, Gelfand pairs, Sturm-Liouville operators, and Lie theory. New proofs of results concerning Tannaka-Krein duality and Gelfand pairs are given. On the basis of this theory, new approaches to the construction of harmonic analysis on well-known objects become possible. Audience: This volume will be of interest to researchers and graduate students involved in harmonic analysis and representation theory.

              Book Description

From a mathematical point of view it is fascinating to realize that most, if not all, of the notions arising from the theory of analytic functions in the open unit disk have counterparts when one replaces the integers by the nodes of a homogeneous tree. It is also fascinating to realize that a whole function theory, different from the classical theory of several complex variables, can be developped when one considers hypercomplex (Clifford) variables, Fueter polynomials and the Cauchy-Kovalevskaya product, in place of the classical polynomials in three independent variables.

This volume contains a selection of papers on the topics of Clifford analysis and wavelets and multiscale analysis, the latter being understood in a very wide sense. The theory of wavelets is mathematically rich and has many practical applications.

The author of Beyond Valor offers a new collection of oral histories from veterans of the Second World War, this time from the Pacific theater. In an introduction, Patrick K. O'Donnell warns, "oral histories are perhaps the best means available to reveal the horrors and pathos of the foxhole." Indeed, several of the accounts he compiles on these pages are grisly, such as the story of Tom Lyons, stabbed in the neck by a Japanese soldier on Guadalcanal. Lyons survived, but only after being heaped on top of a pile of dead bodies. Rumors of his death reached home: "My mother got a check from my insurance company saying I was dead the same day she got a letter from me written by a nurse at a hospital in New Zealand." Combat stories abound, including a firsthand account of Gunnery Sergeant William G. Walsh jumping on a grenade to protect his squad on Iwo Jima, a feat for which he was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. O'Donnell organizes his material chronologically and introduces each chapter to help readers understand the context of the soldiers' individual narratives. For those who enjoy real-life war stories told from the perspective of the men who were there, Into the Rising Sun is hard to beat. --John Miller

                                      Product Description

In their own words, World War II's pacific veterans reveal the heart of combat. O’Donnell uncovers the hidden history of World War II through interviews with its most elite troops. By at last telling their stories, these men present an unvarnished look at the war on the ground, a final gift from aging warriors who have already given so much.

This is the second of Patrick O'Donnell's books. O'Donnell is a gifted oral historian who's been collecting the recollections of men who were soldiers and served in the Second World War, partially through a website he set up some years ago, and partially through other sources. This compilation shows off O'Donnnell's strengths, and weaknesses (such as they are) and is a good example of his work.

O'Donnell, for whatever reason, is very attached to "elite" infantry units. In his book on the European Theater, this included paratroopers, rangers, and the members of the 1st Special Service Force. In the current book, which covers the Pacific Theater, the distinction between "elite" forces and the regular ones is somewhat more blurry: Army Rangers, paratroopers, and members of Merril's Marauders are the participants from the army, but the author chose to distinguish the Marine Raider and Parachute units from other Marine outfits. This is a weakness as all of these forces were disbanded in 1943-4, and so the book would be rather truncated as far as the Marine Corps went for the last 18 months or so of the war. This (of course) is unacceptable, so the author merely follows former members of these specialized units who were absorbed into other, regular Marine regiments.

The result is that some battles are covered in considerable detail here, while others (notably Saipan and Peleliu) are ignored because the Marines who participated in these campaigns weren't "elite." This includes members of the 1st Marine Division, who were arguably the most experienced in terms of combat against Japanese soldiers. So what's here is rather skewed and somewhat disjointed, but if you accept that, then the material that's here is worthwhile.

I enjoyed this book, within its limitations, and I would recommend it and the others in O'Donnell's series, provided you accept what they are.

4 out of 5 stars Stories about the Pacific War........2004-05-29

A fairly interesting book. O'Donnell lists the campaigns of the elite troops of this theater of command, details the plan of battle, and then gives the oral histories of those who served in those campaigns. Most of the veterans are at the end of their lives, so these oral histories present a heartfelt tribute to the difficulties these soldiers endured during combat. What surprised me most was how these soldiers/veterans got choked up recounting the battles they went through, and the friends they lost. Freedom isn't cheap, and these soldiers are living proof of how America was affected by the battle.
This is a good read. Oral histories are good at describing the personal experiences of soldiers, but they don't put perspective on the actual battle campaigns. If one wants to know more about the War in the Pacific, one needs to read a general history, before reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most honest books about combat in the Pacific War.......2004-01-12

Well, if other reviews don't say it already, this book was one of the more brutally honest books written about war against Japan. Its honest because its brutally politically incorrect. The American soldiers who relates their stories, tell not only of the horrors that the Japanese troops committed but additional horrors of what they did to the Japanese troops. This was no-hold bar combat, where there were no "good guys" or "bad guys" per say. The stories related in this book was all about killing, surviving and living on. In doing so, anything goes and there were no rules. It may be that many general readers may be kind of shock to read so honest account. Some of them may not like the read how the Americans in these pages acted with certain amount of brutality that almost mirror their enemies. But then, what is war after all, right?

5 out of 5 stars A measure of the sacrifices.......2003-08-26

This review is of the Audio CD version of this excellent book. Jeff Riggenbach did a fantastic job reading this text. He managed to give proper emphasis without drowning the material.

Many soldiers are reluctant to talk of their wartime experiences for fear of seeming boastful. O'Donnell got these veterans to open up and tell their stories. They did so that the fallen heroes would get proper credit, not to tell of their own exploits in a grand fashion. Many of the other reviewers have told of the specific episodes relayed in the book, but what struck me was the depth of feeling that these men had many decades after the fact. One soldier tells of looking up the family of a fallen buddy after the war. It was as if he felt driven to tell them of their son's valor and his worth to his fellow soldiers. Another tells of a friend he saw die in combat after having met his wife and been their with him during the arrival of their child. It was a common theme that these men had these experiences with them every day, if only just beneath the surface. I highly recommend it to those who would like to grasp the depth of the sacrifice these individuals made on our behalf.

5 out of 5 stars Experience Battle from your Armchair!.......2003-04-16

I read this book after "Beyond Valor" by the same author and I wasn't disappointed. "Into the Rising Sun" is a collection of first hand accounts of the brave men who fought in the Pacific. The author sets up the accounts with some background material to make more sense to it all. After re-living some of these battle through this book, I started to understand what a living Hell these guys lived through. The intensity of the Japanese soldier was astonishing.

This book has special meaning to me since my father was a Marine fighting the Japanese in the Pacific. He was at Guadalcanal and Okinawa .I now know what a hero he was!

                                        Book Description

Eva Pendleton Henderson, a member of the historical Chisum family, recounts her life on the windy border country of southern New Mexico in the 1890s when it was still a territory. Growing up in a time of legends--Pancho Villa afoot, the rumblings of the first automobile terrifying horses as well as men, drought and fate walking hand in hand, the end of the old West and the beginning of the new. An oft told tale? Yes, but rarely told by a girl and woman who truly saw what was there and wrote of it in a clear, strong, sensible voice. Her story shines as brightly as her unmistakable wit. For all ages; a book for all seasons now in a new edition.

                                                    Book Description

A four-book Great American Novel attempt by Ohio Mental Patient 44288. "This man told me 35 years ago he'd try to write the GAN in the first by-line news story I ever wrote. But he was then already crazy and the feature was from an asylum so what the hell. But when I retired I got to thinking and tracked him down and found he left this absolutely unique treasure as the only legacy from his alcohol drenched, pathetic, and tragically short life. Damn, if this guy didn't put about all other attempts at GAN since 1962 and later to shame I'll eat a bug. A must read. This is the real life "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" by a guy I know was there and who escaped without that pesky little lobotomy and one big Indian with the pillow. I promise in many places this book will make you poop your pants." Perry Aayr

This look into the world of a Fifties Insane Asylum is gut wrenching and superb.

That this autobigraphical rendering was rescured from destruction is a testament to journalist and finder Perry Aayr to whom we all owe a debt of gratitude.

In case you're wondering, it is aptly titled.
