Book Description
This third edition has been comprehensively revised, expanding the information in the previous edition by updating the preparation for effective performance in an assessment center process. Tra-ditional managerial policies still apply, with potential candidates advised in detail concerning the strategies for successful preparedness and participation in assessment testing. While the In-Basket preparation and process continues to be the backbone of assessment testing, this new edition offers additional information relating to performance knowledge including a fundamental set of rules and guidelines for participation. An entire chapter is devoted to developing performance testing strategies from a simplified written examination to the complexity of performing in a multilevel-multidimensional assessment testing process. This book presents the background evolution and the rationale needed by law enforcement to actively participate in this area for hiring and promotion.

Good info.......2007-01-17
Needed some guides for promotion preparation. This is one of several that I purchased, and I think all helped a little in different areas.
If you have a lot of time to prepare and study (and you always should be preparing for promotion in ANY job) then get as many books & guides as you can. They will help you do better now, and get recognized now. When promotion time comes - you will be ready!
worth the money.......2004-07-17
Very useful information. This book is good for 10-25 points on your score. If you have never sat for an assessment center this book will take away some of the mystery and give you the advantage.

Brilliant Work.......2007-03-17
Linus Pauling is certainly one of the most brilliant people of the past 100 years. It is well worth reading his original words, not some misinterpreted restatement by someone else. Much of this material is extremely technical and may not be understood by the average reader.
In particular I would highly recommend the articles that explain the value of taking supplemental vitamin C and how much to take. Great research! Great thinking!

Book Description
Alternately vilified as a publicity-seeking egoist and lauded as a rambunctious, fearless advocate, William Kunstler consistently embodied both of these qualities.
Kunstler's unrelenting, radical critique of American racism and the legal system took shape as a result of his efforts to enlist the federal judicial system to support the civil rights movement. In the late 60s and the 70s, Kunstler, refocusing his attention on the Black Power and anti-war movement, garnered considerable public attention as defender of the Chicago Seven, and went on to represent such controversial figures as Leonard Peltier, the American Indian Movement leader charged with killing an FBI agent, and Jack Ruby, the killer of Lee Harvey Oswald. Later, Kunstler briefly represented Colin Ferguson, the Long Island Railroad mass murderer, outraging fans and detractors alike with his invocation of the infamous "black rage" defense.
Defending those most loathed by mainstream, conventional America, William Kunstler delighted in taking on fiercely political cases, usually representing society's outcasts and pariahs free of charge and often achieving remarkable courtroom results in seemingly hopeless cases. Though Kunstler never gave up his revolutionary underpinnings, he gradually turned from defending clients whose political beliefs he personally supported to taking on apolitical clients, falling back on the broad rationale that his was a general struggle against an oppressive government.
What ideological and tactical motives explain Kunstler's obsessive craving for media attention, his rhetorical flourishes in the courtroom and his instinctive and relentless drive for action? How did Kunstler migrate from a comfortable middle-class background to a life as a staunchly rebellious figure in social and legal history? David Langum's portrait gives depth to the already notorious breadth of William Kunstler's life.
Customer Reviews:
the book reads like an Oliver Stone film -- including the title.......2007-05-28
I don't support many of Kunstler's views, outrageous statements and his representation of many of his criminal clients. The courage of civil rights movement lawyers was beyond powerful and Kunstler got involved with the Freedom Rider's case which ignited his fiery passion to be a radical lawyer . Author David J. Langum is a smart story teller because I was entertained when I wasn't being shocked. I had to laugh when he writes about the amount of mail the Chicago 7 received including a letter with some pot which Kunstler and his clients smoked together. Kunstler had unconventional boundaries with clients and Langum has some interesting theories on why. This book did not turn me into a Kunstler admirer but Langum made me think hard about "conveying a message/education to the public" using "movement law". I live in the East Village and we have been mega dormed to death by NYU and even NY Law with a zone busting mega dorm "with balconies" for law students on 3rd St. and my point is these law students seem to care more about their balcony views than what is going down in the communities that are being gobbled up by their Universities. I would like the zone busting part of NY Law dorm removed and everyone of those students to do volunteer work for the evictions and struggles caused by their Universities and other greedy landlords exploiting our neighborhoods. I doubt the NY Law students would do so and those balconies are more enticing but it would be interesting to hear what Kunstler might have said about all this since Langum mentions that he taught at NY Law and William M. Kunstler, I am guessing, also loved our neighborhood with all the texture and characters (although we are losing both every day). I would like to think he would have tried to help. P342 Langum does write, "Kunstler worried especially about the young people, their materalism and lack of social activism." I would add "institutions of higher learning" like NYU and NY Law with their community crushing mega dorms are encouraging anything but students with passion for social activism.
I am surprised Oliver Stone hasn't made one of his three hours long films from this book but I wouldn't go see the film; the book was enough and "fair" with lots of grey tones that would not make it into the movie version. There are many ironic notes in this book and for me the most ironic is the back cover which says New York University Press.
Smart Enough to be Funny.......2000-05-22
Stand-up comedy is not in the index of this book, but it gets mentioned. Along with a list of Kunstler's film credits is a note that when he tried a comedy routine, he got his biggest laugh for a lawyer joke. I was interested, a long time ago, in what Chapter 6 of this book calls Circus in Chicago. Back when I was contemplating what I might like to do in a career in law, I would have enjoyed the opportunity to generate the number of laughs that are contained in this book. Then I actually found a case that said "Resort to the courts is futile." That was such a change from my expectations that an element of humor creeps into my appreciation of the outrageous nature of that truth. As evidence that the author of this book is aware of the potent nature of that form of humor, picture this: "Kunstler objected. The United States attorney jumped up and argued, 'This is outrageous. This man [Kunstler] is the mouthpiece for these defendants. The Government protests this man's attitude.'" (p. 124) I thought that the best legal point in the book was that Bobby Seale could not be retried on the conspiracy charge after the jury found that the other seven defendants were not guilty of conspiracy. Seale hadn't been charged with anything else, so further proceedings in his case would have been pointless. If there is a fine line between legal logic and the quirks of the system, check this book for the side of the line where the quirks are, and maybe you have already seen bits and pieces of this story on TV. It sure made the newpapers when it was going on.

Book Description
Packed with never-before-seen photographs, The Kennedy White House reveals the world's most famous family, unstaged and as they were, both behind White House doors and in their private homes in Virginia, Palm Beach, Newport, and Hyannis Port. Carl Sferrazza Anthony's fascinating narrative brings new insight to the Kennedy story, in the first book to place the family within the context of 1960s culture and view historical events uniquely from the personal perspective of their family life. A candid and compelling tour, The Kennedy White House "takes you inside the world's most famous goldfish bowl for a glimpse at life in the White House as you've never seen it before" (Julie N. Eisenhower).
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Book.......2007-06-17
This book was a wonder to read and the pictures in it were amazing. Defentitly recomment it!
Awesome!.......2007-06-15
This book is great. I love the pictures, but some of the text was too boring for me. I was only interested in the parts of text that had "Caroline" or "John, Jr." in them. A lot of the pictures I have never seen before and it was a joy to see them in this book!
nice pictures (and text).......2005-12-22
This book is primarily worth it for the mnay great photos of JFK and Jackie, especially of the White House rooms themselves. That said, the text is pretty good, as well. Two items of interest--that isn't J. Edgar Hoover behind Jackie on the front cover but lookalike Secret Service agent Stewart G. "Stu" Stout, Jr. Also, I like the picture of Marilyn Monroe with Secret Service agent Floyd M. Boring (wearing glasses) in front of her on the steps!
[...]
A treasure of a book!!.......2002-10-30
What a classy book that one is! The White House as it was at the time of the Kennedys... and looking at some of those never seen before pictures, we can relive the elegance, charm and grace of that unique period. Two thumbs up Mr. Sferrazza!!
Nicely Done.......2002-02-13
While the pictures are, for the most part, fantastic, the author does tend to make outlandish claims about some of them...The ONLY picture of JFK holding one of his kids, or the ONLY picture of him with Dr. Max Jacobson. Simply not the case! A little more care with details like that would have been nice!
And PS RED Fay did not serve aboard PT 100, as is claimed in the book.

Book Description
This book corrects a popular misconception and explains that it was W.R. Billy Wilkerson Jr., founder and publisher of The Hollywood Reporter, and not Benjamin Bugsy Siegel who created the Vegas Strip. This compelling, richly-researched book was written by Billy's son, W.R. Wilkerson III, and it finally uncovers the secrets behind the building of the Flamingo Hotel and the death of Bugsy Siegel.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book! Vegas History from a New Point of View.......2004-01-07
A really fascinating little book, with a very rare quality... it's really the first time this story has been told. Other Vegas books are good, some are great, but most in one way or another repeat the stories we've read before (another exception: Fly on the Wall by Dick Odessky).
Complete disappointment.......2003-01-04
This is a sketchy at best account of a powerful man during his time. The book is short and did not give me enough details to his insight on Vegas except that he was a gambloholic. It left me wanting to know more about this man and his rise to power. Honestly I enjoyed more his accounts as the publisher of the Hollywood Reporter and the power he had there than his accounts of trying to build the Flamingo. I thought the book would give more insight on early Vegas but to me gave more to early Hollywood.
A GAMBLER GONE GOOD...FINALLY.......2001-05-28
Whatta story! If Mr. Wilkerson only had control of his addiction there is no telling what he could have accomplished. This is a talented man who had half the world by the tail, but couldn't get that 2nd half. He was able to accomplish a lot and was the creator of modern casinos in Las Vegas. This is a short story, but filled with interesting information. Highly recommended.
A fascinating blend of Las Vegas history and biography........2000-04-04
One man's chronic gambling habit became the foundation for modern Las Vegas: The Man Who Invented Las Vegas documents his rags-to-riches story and his impact on building the casinos and hotels of Las Vegas. Black and white photos pepper an examination of publisher Wilkerson's life and investments in the Las Vegas image in a fascinating blend of local history and biography.
A Top Notch Read.......2000-03-09
This is a top notch read. It is hard to find books of this caliber about the mob. The research is scholarly but still accessible. It is a must-read for anyone interested in the birth of Las Vegas and the gritty details of Hollywood history in general.

Worth Reading.......2004-01-17
All too often one is exposed to the glamour of the life of a diplomat. This book is an insightful look into the work-a-day world of an American diplomat. Well worth the read.
2 THUMBS UP!!!!.......2004-01-15
An extremely well-documented account of Mr. Boudreau's incredulous career intertwined with deep concern for caring for his family in a foreign, often hostile environment. Book is untinged by prejudice of any kind; has many down-to-earth insights. As I read each chapter I was amazed at the tasks Mr. Boudreau was assigned, which would intimidate most most men.
His diplomacy rose to the occasion over and over again, solving potential crisis and disaster. I admire his wife, Dailyn, for accompanying her husband to Africa and other places he was assigned to, having her children with her etc. and placing herself in possible dangerous situations, yet having the guts to "stand by her man" and assist in any and all ways she could. I have recommended Mr. Boudreau's book to many of my friends and family. Very educational, emotional, often times humorous, and a valid account of history.

get a life.......2003-09-13
Hi, author here. This attack on me has been sitting on the web for five years and I'm bored with it. The author of the attack is either a member of the Pet Shop Boys or one of their friends. He - and it's definitely a he - is also a liar. And inaccurate. If he thinks there are 'major' gay figures I left out of QN then maybe he should name them. Yes, the book was personal, because that's what the publishers asked me for. If I left anyone out it was because I didn't think they were interesting. And if he can name another book that covered the material I covered and before I did so, I'll eat a copy of QN in public.
And as for the reader coming from 'Funchal, Madeira', if a copy of QN ever reached Funchal and made it into a bookshop, then I'm Ida Lupino... J.
Not worth the money.......1998-11-13
Gill's serves up a tired helping of warmed-over tidbits about many figures in American jazz and pop music prior to the late 60s. All of them have been printed elsewhere, and some of the major gay figures he misses completely. British classical music gets a lick and a promise, as it were, until Gill gets to the subject that Gill likes best: GILL, who Gill knows in the Brit rock scene, who Gill thinks is a self-hating gay shite, Gill's greatest almost-brushes with the rich and famous, etc., etc.......yawn. If you are the other member of the John Gill fan club, you'll love this book. If not, skip it. It's a book for easily impressed gay Gen-Xers.
