Book Description
Many people have written about creating customer-centered organizations. Michael Basch actually did it--better than anyone else. He was the co-founder of Federal Express, and the VP of Sales, Marketing and Customer Service. He built the systems, created the processes and developed the culture that made FedEx the legend it still is today in customer management and support.
CustomerCulture is about consciously building the customer-centered organization where every employee is focused on serving their customers for sustained, profitable growth over the long haul... and it is now available in paperback. The people and companies that are constantly customer-centered are the "evolutionary forces" that continue to grow and innovate in their neverending quest for finding better ways. This is the definition of"CustomerCulture." In this book, Basch shows how any organization--from a small dental practice to a multinational organization--can transform itself for the customer, and become more profitable along the way.
Endorsed by Fred Smith, principal founder and CEO of FedEx and James Barksdale, co-founder of Netscape.

Everyone talks about creating a "customer-centered culture." In CustomerCulture: How FedEx and Other Great Companies Put Their Customer First Every Day, the executive who pioneered FedEx's legendary customer culture shows exactly how to go beyond talk and
Customer Reviews:
Great content, but not a good experience........2007-03-25
Before I say anything about the content, I'd like to make a couple of comments about the book itself. For me, books are a tactile pleasure. The weight of the book, the feel of the pages, the texture of the paper. 'The Customer Experience'.
This book - or my copy at least - felt cheap! The paper was thin, one can see type through the pages, the spine does not allow one to fully open the book without damaging it. And the printing itself was faded and 'weak'. Now that may have been my copy only, but as you can see it certainly made an impression, just not a very good one.
And that's a pity, because the content is really good. It is a true story, it's not some consultant trying to demonstrate how smart they are. It's real and incredibly useful. For those of you who are looking for case studies and actual examples of what delivering a superior customer experience actually looks and feels like, then this book is for you. As a senior member of the early FedEx team the author provides unique insights into building a successful customer focus culture - both the highlights and the lowlights. Seeing success in this areana, in this detail, is rare so it's well worth the read.
For me though, the experience wasn't good.
Outstanding, very powerful.......2006-01-04
"Customer Culture" has some very profound and powerful insights into how an to get the employees in a business to unite around providing excellent service.
"Customer Culture" provides a framework for building a customer oriented business culture. I consider "Customer Culture" to be one of the most valuable business books I have ever read.
READ IT.......2003-08-19
This is an excellant book. The authors write about the story of Fed Ex and how it was built and what it did to succeed. It also writes about companies who embed the Fed Ex culture into their company. You will enjoy.
Customer Service; The critical element for success!.......2003-02-12
Mike Basch has done a masterful job of explaining how FedEx and other companies have been successful by understanding their customers and consistently providing a service that is truly responsive to the customer needs. Basch clearly and concisely identifies the customer culture of these organizations through insightful illustrations and provides guidelines for others to follow. I especially like his creative definition of the organization's CEO - Customers, Employees and Owners. The book serves as a wonderful reminder to all of us in business that our number one priority is to meet the needs of our customers.
Clear, Concise and Accurate.......2002-10-02
The Customer Culture should be mandatory reading for anyone in business or thinking of going into business or management. The book not only reminds us that without Customers we have no business, but shows the reader how to keep the customers they already have while adding more. Mr. Basch guides the reader through time proven ideas of how to build a customer base, but more importantly cites examples of how these ideas where put to use in real world situations. Customer Culture is a top down approach for anyone at any level of management on how to build a more customer responsive and thus a better business.

Double Your Pleasure, Double Your Fun.......2007-06-02
Friends Proctor and Springer love gardening, love writing about gardening, write well about gardening. Springer is serious and Proctor takes a wry squint at the subject, and soon you'll recognize which has written which article a few sentences in. A book for when it's too cold or too hot to go out and do the joy/work of gardening, a good gift book, a good one for the coffe table or bedside table. Be passionate! Then read their other excellent ones. Enjoy!
nice photos, limited use.......2004-02-25
Although this book has beautiful photos and snappy dialogue, realize that it is a collection of essays. This book does not have chapters, per se, and not exhaustive discussions, but the essays are by two very experienced gardeners. Gardening advice is charmingly presented, but in a piecemeal fashion. It makes for entertaining and enjoyable winter reading but for more practical advice in dry climates with hot summers and cold winters, I find Lauren Springer's book The Undaunted Garden, to be much more helpful. It has plant lists that Passionate Gardening doesn't have. I read Passionate Gardening for inspiration and for vicarious gardening experience, but when it comes down to doing things, I use other books. Realize also, that Passionate Gardening isn't necessarily Xeriscape oriented, featuring at least a few essays where plants require regular moisture(e.g. the essay on lilies, and one on roses).
Fun and Fabulous!.......2004-02-19
This book is chock full of information for challenging climates and written with a wonderful sense of humor. I've read my copy again and again! Although not written for gardeners in the OH area, there are useful ideas and plant combinations that I have used successfully in my own garden. I LOVE this book - I wish they would write more.
A lovely, inspirational book.......2003-07-10
I'm a beginning gardener and live in Colorado. Springer and Proctor's book has inspired me and given me reams of useful information to improve my garden. I may not be ready to plant thousands of plants a year as they do, but their short essays have given me the ideas and information to focus on bit by bit. The photos, mostly of Springer's foothills garden and Proctor's city garden, are beautiful and excellent as plant combination possibilities. I can't recommend this book enough, particularly for Western gardeners.
Inspired Brilliance.......2002-11-18
Passionate Gardening, specifically the photos and text contributed by Lauren Springer, is the best single source of inspiration for gardeners in the Rocky Mountain states. Though Lauren's solo work, Undaunted Garden, is perhaps more comprehensive and detailed, Passionate Gardening has dazzling photos of her current garden and is a blueprint for a spectacular success in difficult climates.
I own a nursery and I am a garden designer. I see many projects that are appropriate for xeric or rock garden applications. Whenever I show the customer Passionate Gardening, the response is universally, "I want to make my garden as beautiful as that one." Lauren introduces us to plants that are hardly household names (yet), and teaches us specifically, practically and clearly how to use them. Lonicera korolkowiii 'Floribunda'
may not be known to you, but you will have no doubt how to use it when you finish this book. And since that is one of the few blue leaved deciduous shrubs, you may very well have the perfect place for it in your landscape.
There is no better read than her books for those of us in cold and dry climates, and even a southern Florida subtropical gardener could glean important ideas about approaching design and color/texture combinations. Enjoy!

Wings of Our Own is a collection of stories about those "who also serve." This 240-page book is chock full of personal narratives and anecdotes and provides a linkage to the past as well as a taste of the present. These true tales of military life are emotionally charged, educational, inspirational and often humorous. All are heartwarming and demonstrate the bonds and similarities that connect them. Although these Air Force spouses share a special bond, every spouse and parent can relate to their stories.
Customer Reviews:
Great gift for any military wife or spouse.......2007-06-02
In 1999, I was at McGuire AFB with Mrs. Johnson when she was putting this wonderful compilation of true stories together. She was involved in many aspects and organizations of base life and had a wonderfully positive outlook on everything. The book that came together holds that happy, uplifting feeling. Now, after two children and several moves, I've finally ordered the finished product and have thoroughly enjoyed reading it before bed every night. I like the humor and the reality of what I am still going through as a wife of an active duty husband. Thank you P.K. and best of luck!
For Such A Time as This.......2003-01-03
When PK Johnson wrote this book, little did she know that our nation would be facing "wars and rumor of wars." I believe her carefully crafted book was written for such a time as this. This book of encouragement is one of those timeless reads that will help to meet the needs of military families for years to come.
I enjoyed the humor sprinkled throughout as well as the inspiration gleened from other spouses who have "been there, done that" and faced similar challenges that I face as a military spouse. This is a must read for all military spouses and those who love them--no matter which branch of the service you are in.
By turns emotionally charged, humorous, & educational.......2002-02-11
Wings of Our Own: Heroes, Happenings & History of Air Force Spouses is an inspirational collection of personal narratives, reminiscences, and biographical anecdotes about the contributions of past and present spouses of American Air Force officers. Different vignettes cover such topics as friendship, history, tradition, and the ultimate sacrifice. By turns, emotionally charged, humorous, educational, and inspirations, P.K. Johnson's text is exceptioinally well written making Wings Of Our Own a particularly moving and memorable anthology recommended for 20th Century American history, home front military history, and air force history reading lists and reference collections.
Book Description
BORN TO HEAL takes you from mystical green jungles and the overwhelming crush of humanity in India's crowded cities to the stark beauty of Arizona's high desert. The author follows one woman's lifelong, haunting quest for spiritual and professional growth.
Beloved mother, wife and physician, Dr. Gladys Taylor McGarey has inspired this uplifting chronicle that follows her search to expand her knowledge and undestanding in the healing arts as well as the art of life.
Customer Reviews:
McGarey Girls are Tops!.......2004-08-17
I have had the privilege of knowing Dr. Gladys in person, and it is just as much pleasure to read her life story. It is special that it is shared with us by her daughter. I feel as though I have experiended her lives with her! Analeah is a great writer. Gladys is a great doctor. This story would be enjoyable for anyone to read who likes life and people and adventure! I will read and re-read this one! It is ageless and priceless.
Pioneer Woman of Purpose.......2004-03-24
Pioneer women still exist and the story that unfolds of the life of Gladys McGarey is just one such story in the modern day. In a world that seeks 'purpose' as a guiding life principle this woman's story shines out. Her life unfolds in the writing in a beautiful way, modest, yet bold and strong. Analea McGarey's writing comes from the heart and the hearth where stories of Gladys' life abound and she has woven them together into a beautiful tapestry which is both evocative and inspiring.
The narrative takes the reader from her birth in India and the inborn love for healing through her life today. A pioneer woman on the front of women in medicine, holistic medicine, balancing family and vocation, internatial lecturing and always willing to live her life in the faithfulness that carried her through all of life's challenges.
This is a book to inspire women and men of all ages to live their life to the fullest seeking always to be in line with God's will for their lives. Not the typical story for there are many challenges along the way.
As I write this review of my sister-in-law's book Gladys is preparing for another adventure going to a 3rd world country to continue to share her healing hands with people in need.
After you read this book you won't be surprised, but grateful to live in the world the same time she is here and challenged to live your own life to the full.

Book Description
Throughout the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, illegitimate offspring of elite families in colonial Spanish America appealed to the Council and Cámara of the Indies in Spain to purchase gracias al sacar legitimations. Their applications provided intimate testimony concerning their own lives, accounts of their parents’ sexual relationships, and details regarding the impact of illegitimacy within their families and communities. Bourbon officials in Spain debated which petitions merited approval, and in the process forged policies concerning gender, sexuality, illegitimacy, and the family.
Scattered throughout the Archive of the Indies, the petitions were difficult to locate until the author determined the pattern of how they were archived and was able to access this extraordinarily rich new source for Spanish American social history. For this book, she has not only analyzed the gracias al sacar documents of some 240 illegitimates, but also traced the histories of those involved in eighteen major archives in Spain, the Caribbean, Mexico, and South America.
The collective biographies of the gracias al sacar parents, and of their illegitimate offspring—as infants, children, and adults—reveal a Hispanic mentality that consciously differentiated between the public and private spheres. Colonial elites distinguished between a private circle of family, kin, and intimate friends and a public world where status (honor) was negotiated with outside peers. This bifurcation was distinct yet permeable; an individual might “pass” to negotiate a public status different from a private reality. Thus, an unwed mother might enjoy the public reputation that she was a virgin, the bastard son of a priest might be treated as legitimate, and a mulatto could be transformed into someone white.
The author explores how the probability for passing varied throughout the Spanish Empire, and how it narrowed as the eighteenth century drew to a close. She also demonstrates that the inability to conceptualize passing beyond the scope of the individual exacerbated social tensions prior to independence.

Wonderful short biography of James K. Polk.......2007-09-16
I am currently reading a bio of every President in order. I generally look for a fairly comprehensive one volume account but unfortunately for Polk there are none available (although the forthcoming 400+ page plus bio by Borneman will hopefully change this). I decided I would save my money to wait for Borneman's book and checked out Leonard's short bio (196 pages of text) from the Library.
Thankfully, this is a great short bio of James K. Polk. His early life is covered in a suprising amount of detail for the short amount of text devoted to it, and his Presidency is covered quite thoroughly. This is accomplished by Leonard's great writing and superb organization and editing. This book was so satisfactory I am not sure I will even decide to read Borneman's forthcoming biography. Also, do not be swayed by Betty Burke's review, she is clearly reviewing the wrong book.

Reviewer: Betty Burks (Knoxville, TN) - See all my reviews
This book was not written by a fan or supporter of this Tennessee president, but released by a Yankee group who hides behind "Oxford" so we might think Mississippi or England. Not so, William Dusinberre must be fuddies with the university professors who tore apart Nathan Bedford Forrest in the same way. Overlooked completely he status and the part these Tennesseans played in the history of this nation. It's best to consider character assassination with the conflicting thins these writers emphasize while leaving out the real story, the facts of the matter. James K. Polk had been Governor of Tehhessee and Speaker of the House of Representatives before becoming U. S. president. It was not a secret that he owned slaves to work on his cotton plantation in Mississippi. We didn't have such in Tennessee, but I have an old post card of the 11th President's bust which stands in the State Capitol in Nashville. We visited Polk's ancestral home in downtown Columbia, Tennessee. It was not out in the country, though a famous one is in that county owned by a female physician. She did not have slaves. Forrest's family were fine, upstanding natives of Chapel Hill, not so far east from Columbia. It infuriates me when I innocently find weird subverted stuff like thos on the public library shelves. I wish the reference librarians who ordered these fiction pretending to be non-fiction before putting them out for just anybody to read. Polk was duly elected and in the White House from 1845 to 1849, before the Civil War. He was not responsible for that war.
This person from Cape Town used the false writings of professor Wayne Cutler when he came to this Republican town, and thought that what he was reading was truth. Polk was a Southern Democrat. What would he write about Huey B. Long, George Wallace, and other governors who stood tall for what the South stands for. The politics of slavery did not have any substance whatsoever in the war which divided this country. It was states' rights -- the Southern states, which Northerners would not understand. I learned more than I had planned that there is a conspiracy going on to deride Southern leaders and presidents. They were statesmen and war heroes and lived to be a part of the history of America. Modern history-writing is all wrong, when the author makes up "facts" as he is inclined, and not factually.

Book Description
“It has the thoroughness of a history book yet reads with the personalized vision of a novel.” –Time
Chester Brown reinvents the comic-book medium to create the critically acclaimed historical biography Louis Riel, winning the Harvey Awards for best writing and best graphic novel for his compelling, meticulous, and dispassionate retelling of the charismatic, and perhaps insane, nineteenth-century Métis leader. Brown coolly documents with dramatic subtlety the violent rebellion on the Canadian prairie led by Riel, who some regard a martyr who died in the name of freedom, while others consider him a treacherous murderer.
Customer Reviews:
Chester Brown triumphs again..........2007-09-19
As with his earlier work "Yummy Fur" and his take on the Gospels, Chester Brown doesn't shy away from exploring the darker aspects of human behavior in Louis Riel. With this work Chester hews closely to historical record, following the ultimately tragic life of Riel from his early days at the Red River settlement, his fight for independence and finally, his death at the hands of an imperial Canadian government.
Chester also shows a deft hand as an artist, using a black and white minimalism throughout.
Vive Louis Riel!.......2006-11-04
Yes, I'm a Franco Manitobain. Yes, I think Louis Riel is a hero ... at least to many in Manitoba. And that's my bias or point of view. So, I was very happy to find this book.
I thought the graphics were wonderful. I really like the way Chester Brown accommodated English speaking readers but still made the point that many of the characters were really speaking French -- he used a different font but the text was in English. I thought that was a clever way of solving that problem.
It's a great way to learn about history -- through dialog, text, and comic strip drawings.
The history itself was fairly good. Although there were a couple of times when I felt that something was being described through the lens of the Anglo government in Ottawa. Also, I would have liked more Métis history in this book.
Innovative and Beautiful.......2006-01-19
Noted Canadian graphic artist Brown here mines his country's less distinguished history to tell the captivating story of Lous Reil, a late 19th-century Metis (mixed French and Indian) leader. The story begins in the 1860s, a time when only a small portion of present-day Canada was actually known by that name, the middle third of present-day Canada (Manitoba and Saskatchewan) was claimed as the property of the British Hudson Bay Company, and the Western third of present-day Canada was claimed by Britain. In the middle of the Hudson Bay Company land, about 50 miles north of the Minnesota border, a loose cluster of English and French parishes known as the Red River Settlement was home to several thousand settlers. When the Canadian government struck a deal with the Hudson Bay Company to purchase their land, it upset the Red River locals. These settlers, many of whom were of mixed French and Indian blood, and some of whom had been there for generations, were concerned (and rightly so) that they would loose their land under this arrangement. They embarked on a course of self-rule that put them in a state of rebellion against the Canadian government, and the educated, bilingual Louis Reil emerged as their leader.
Brown does an admirable job of retelling the fairly complex story of the settlers' 16 year struggle to stave off rule from Ottawa. There's a lot of to-and-fro, as Reil and other key figures move around a lot, including trips to Ottawa, Montreal, Washington, DC, and London. There are also some major time shifts that make the story a bit choppy, but there's no doubt that history comes alive in Brown's hands. Despite dropping out of sight for years at a time, Reil remains the figurehead of the "rebels" (mostly Metis, but also some disgruntled Irish Fenians), even as he descends into bouts of religious madness and is committed to a mental institution by his friends. The final portion of the book becomes tragic, as the Canadian government sends troops to crush the rebellion, and Reil resists all advice to wage a guerrilla war which might have made things quite difficult for the government. His reticence to use "Indian tactics" results in a total rout of the Metis, and he is captured and hung after a show trial. There's are strong themes of cultural and economic imperialism, capitalism, and racism that will interest those interested in the less heroic side of North American history. For example, one plot point shows how politicians schemed with the rail barons to send troops by rail as a way of raising public support for railroad funding.
The artwork is fantastic, contained in a formal grid of six square panels per page. It will strike many as old-fashioned in its sparse, 2-dimensional style (which Brown attributes to the influence of Little Orphan Annie). The panels are expertly balanced and calm, showing a mastery of tone and mood. And as with all works published by Drawn & Quarterly, it's beautifully produced, with top-notch printing on a rich cream stock and great two-tone printed cloth cover. One minor quibble I have is with the use of the word "biography" in the title. Given that Brown's excellent annotations to the story make it clear that he's changed a great number of details from the historical record, it seems somewhat misleading to subtitle it this way. It is a fictional account based on real history, but not entirely faithful to it, and so might be better termed "A Historical Fiction" or "A Fictional Biography". No one would ever write a prose biography and have footnotes indicating that they had changed details. Still, it's an extensively researched work, and a great place to start learning the story of a Canadian folk hero.
Great words and pictures!.......2005-03-11
A wonderful read and innovative comic work.
The Riel Deal!.......2004-12-24
Chester Brown's drawings are stark and sparse. The six-panel format used consistently throughout the biography is an excellent frame for telling history. The evenness of the presentation suggests that a flat and neutral point-of-view is used to tell the story of an apparently controversial figure. Not that you should necessarily trust such an assertion about Brown's telling, but it is highly effective.
It strikes me as highly unfortunate and typical that I have to come to this fascinating bit of Canadian frontier history this late in life and in such a format. Still, this is what I find myself looking for in comic books these days. Interesting stories about unusual topics.

Book Description
"Sixteen years later Louis Riel would be
dressing himself again ... to be hanged by
his neck until he is at last, perfectly,
dead. 0 my God have mercy."
So begins Rudy Wiebe's powerful portrayal of Louis Riel, the mystic revolutionary of the Northwest, and Gabriel Dumont - "the savage" as he calls himself - the great buffalo hunter who becomes Riel's commander-in-chief.
With the same epic scope and inspired vision that he brought to The Temptations of Big Bear (winner of the Governor Generals Award for Fiction), Wiebe recreates an agonizing chapter in Canadian history which can never be forgotten - the explosive world of the North West Rebellions and the characters of the two men who led them.
Written with powerful clarity and compassion, The Scorched-Wood People is an immense achievement, a brilliant exploration of the faces of prophetic vision, the morality of politics and the nature of faith.

Book Description
The nineteenth-century Métis politician and mystic Louis Riel has emerged as one of the most popular - and elusive - figures in Canadian culture. Since his hanging for treason in 1885, the self-declared David of the New World has been depicted variously as a traitor to Confederation; a French-Canadian and Catholic martyr; a bloodthirsty rebel; a pan-American liberator; a pawn of shadowy white forces; a Prairie political maverick; a First Nations hero; an alienated intellectual; a victim of Western industrial progress; and even a Father of Confederation.
Albert Braz synthesizes the available material by and about Riel, including film, sculpture, and cartoons, as well as literature in French and English, and analyzes how an historical figure could be portrayed in such contradictory ways. In light of the fact that most aesthetic representations of Riel bear little resemblance not only to one another but also to their purported model, Braz suggests that they reveal less about Riel than they do about their authors and the society to which they belong. The most comprehensive treatment of the representations of Louis Riel in Canadian literature, The False Traitor will be a seminal work in the study of this popular Canadian figure.
Customer Reviews:
Louis Riel for Dummies.......2006-02-05
Riel, who led Metis rebellions in present-day Manitoba and Saskatchewan, is extremely important in Canadian history, but was repudiated by most Canadians (French-speakers were somewhat more sympathetic, though by no means unanimous) through WWII. Since then, more and more literature, art, and scholarship has treated Riel as a quintessentially embodiment the conflicts and contradictions of Canadian history and nationhood. The phrase, "fasle traitor," is meant to exemplify Riel's
Braz has done an excellent job of collected many diverse documents, including illustrations whose presence enliven this volume. He also lays out the various "Riels": traitor, lunatic, visionary, cultural mediator, and so forth. The argument suffers a bit from the need to treat so much material; at times it seems to descend into pure plot summary. However, it belongs on the bookshelf of all those interested in Riel, either historically or as a cultural icon.
