Great Tools and Tales.......2000-04-01
As a compendium of insider knowledge in the field of human performance technology (HPT), this book has it all. The first section briefly reviews the history and body of knowledge which comprises HPT and gives insight to its breadth and complexity. Acknowledged leaders in the field share their time-proven and refreshingly wholistic tools for diagnosis and resolution of issues in a continuously changing environment. While the book has a decidedly theoretical bent, it doesn't fail to provide wonderfully practical tools, supported by examples, you can use right away to get results.
Plus, I found out I'm a "brown suit"? Are you?
I highly recommend this book. It's a "must have" reference for the library of every self-respecting performance technology (HPT) or organizational development (OD) person out there. Just make sure you read it and use it!

No matter whether you're a Custerphile or Custerphobe, don't let the title fool you. Under Custer's Command has very little to do with the "Boy General" and a lot to do with the every day life of a Union Cavalryman during the Civil War. James Avery describes life in the Fifth Michigan Cavalry with frankness and honesty, and without concern for the feelings of those who failed to pass muster.
The book details the part the Wolverines played in such famous battles as Gettysburg, The Wilderness, Cedar Creek, and Yellow Tavern, from the perspective of one who actively fought at the front lines, and brings a breath of fresh air to the Civil War narrative. I highly recommend this book to anyone who desires to explore the facts of life for a Civil War cavalryman.

This book is the best memoir by an enlisted cavalryman I have ever seen, and I read a lot of Civil War books. At the end of the book, I felt like I had just finished a long conversation with Avery. Buy this book and enjoy it.

I hate to criticize this book since Mr. Kelley seems like a heck of a nice guy and does offer good information. BUT...much of the information about the surgery I got from my surgeon, pre-surgery classes at the hospital, hospital-provided literature and free sites on the web. I am 53 years old. I had my hip replaced Dec. 9, not using cement but natural knit. By Jan. 21 I was walking without a cane or crutches. But, I am younger and for 9 months prior, worked out hard - treadmill, stepper, weights, stretching. Within 10 days of surgery I was back at upper body weight work. I found the exercises from my therapist adequate. So if you are younger and used to exercising, this book is not for you. Older, not used to exercise, it may be helpful. It also does not mention aquatic therapy, a great vehicle, particularly for older hip patients.

Historical mythology credits Robert Baden-Powell, father of the Boy Scout movement, as the "Hero of Mafeking" and the St. George who saved England in its darkest hour. In reality, the authors of this revisionist history assert that he was the "Monster of Mafeking" --- responsible for untold tragedy during the siege of that town in the South African War. In this new biography, the authors set out to debunk some of the myths that we have lived with for so long. Cryptic though it may seem, "The Boy" refers at once to Baden-Powell's suspected lover, Kenneth McLaren; to Baden-Powell being the ultimate "boy-man"; and to Sol Plaatje and the long line of South African black men condescendingly called "boys".
In this highly controversial look at events surrounding Mafeking, the Tshidi-Barolong inhabitants of nearby Mahikeng, the native "stadt" just outside Mafeking, emerge as the real luminaries in the drama of the siege. Time and again, they saved Baden-Powell from himself and ensured that the town was not overrun by Boers. The authors claim that it is two of these men who deserve the title "Hero of Mafeking". One was Sol Plaatje, who went on to become the first Secretary-General of the South African Natuve National Congress, the forerunner to the African National Congress. The other was Mathakgong, a cattle raider and guerrilla fighter.
When the glossy cover is jerked from the fetid pit that is Mafeking, a crime unfolds that is beyond denunciation. Approximately 2,000 people died during the Siege of Mafeking. One thousand - African, Boer and Briton - were killed in action, died of wounds, or expired from disease. The other thousand - all Africans, except for one Dutch child - died of starvation. Was Baden-Powell the immaculate hero that his defenders would have us believe he was? Or was he a genocidal tyrant as the authors assert? This critical reappraisal of a key event in South African history casts new light on a fascinating story that many had thought they knew well.

Academia nonsense... not worth the time or money spent.......2004-02-24
Apparently, the author and his assistant had a gripe agains the Boy Scouts and B-P. Not only did they spin things to their own liking, they mis-used quotes, poetry and other quoted comments to try and prove their point. At the same time, they've added their own interpretations to misrepresent B-P, his family and his views.
I felt sick the entire time I read it. It's noted that a newspaper editor printed it because it "entertained the reader." Well, that goes to show what the focus is... don't tell the truth or both sides, just entertain.
Luckily, I didn't have to buy this... the college library (of course) had it available. Too bad I wasted the time to read any of it.
Academic PC Non-Sense.......2000-06-03
Did we really need another revisionist history written with the sole purpose of showing that everything European and "Colonial" is bad and all native peoples are good, virtuous, etc., etc?
Given the current standards for degree granting(that work must break new ground to be worth an advanced degree)the academic community has been gleefully re-writing history for years to fit their fantasy scenarios and strange political/ social theories.
It is a pity that these authors could not be using their academic skills for something better than pandering to the new political and social powers of South Africa, and to the PC pirates and thought control police of the rest of the world.
