Book Description
A 3-title set by Edward J. McMillan’s on accounting, budgeting, policies and procedures for the Non-profit organization.
This completely revised and expanded edition includes all-new material on long-term financial planning, so that not-for-profits can work toward liberating themselves from the year-to-year scramble for increasingly scarce resources. Not-for-profit managers must be able to direct and control their resource allocation rather than be controlled by outdated, cumbersome, and inaccurate budgeting processes. Not-for-Profit Budgeting and Financial Management, and its powerful system of continuous budgeting, enables all not-for-profit professionals to create and manage reasonable financial plans that fit their organization’s needs.
- Not-for-Profit Accounting, Tax, and Reporting Requirements
This step-by-step guide helps not-for-profits apply for tax-exempt status, handle IRS audits, set up a wholly owned taxable subsidiary, anticipate tax implications of lobbying expenses, and perform a host of other functions. This completely revised and expanded edition includes three all-new chapters, including one on the basics of filing IRS forms 990 and 990-T. Further, detailed appendices offer full explanations of the four accounting standards–SFAS #116, 117, 124, and 136–that primarily affect not-for-profit organizations.
- Model Policies and Procedures for Not-for-Profit Organizations
This latest edition of McMillan’s best-selling guide includes over 150 new model accounting and financial policy documents, as well as forms for such areas as internal control, office administration, and risk reduction. McMillan divides his resource into three sections–Internal Financial Statement Formats, The Chart of Accounts, and The Accounting and Financial Policies and Procedures Manual.
Also included is an associated Web site containing all of the documents found in the book, allowing readers to download and customize them to fit their own organization’s needs. The author also includes a glossary of relevant terms and a full index for handy desk reference.

Customer Reviews:
A Solid Effort!.......2004-05-19
This book aggregates a plethora of tips and techniques believed - sometimes on the basis of solid research - to boost employee loyalty and organizational productivity. Managers need to learn tactics that will bind employees to them personally and to their companies. Author Nancy S. Ahlrichs earnestly believes in the thesis that it is important to be a manager whom employees would chose to work for, that is, a manager of choice. Her advice ranges from quite helpful to self-evident to sort of impractical. For the greatest utility, be a choosy reader: adapt her counsel to your situation. We highly suggest reading this through and then keeping it handy and dipping into it from time to time, as if it were a book of proverbs.
Reflective of our new times.......2003-11-19
I looked at this book at an airport I was stranded at recently, and then ordered it when I saw it featured in Fast Company magazine. It's much better than I thought, as it talks about the new reality of dealing with people who aren't necessarily your direct reports. We are now dealing with off-site workers, contractors, freelancers and it's important to be authentic to all of them. This is the first book I've seen that addresses this issue. If you think just managing your direct reports is all that matters these days, take a close look at this book. I have been a member of SHRM, the co-publisher of this book, for many years and, frankly, I wish they would address this particular topic in some of their own publications and as a track in their annual convention.

Customer Reviews:
I LOVE MEAT!!!!.......2006-12-20
Don't get me wrong! I'm not one of those guys who always ate meat, had to have it, etc. I used to be a vegetarian. Then, late one night while studying at the local community college, I found an odd volume tucked amongst my other texts. It had no title. Upon picking it up, it immediately opened to its center page, a beautiful etching of a freshly slaughtered lamb. From that moment on I was hooked. You'll learn in this text, that the only "true meat" is the meat you kill yourself (by hand). Not sure how to do it? This book gives lots of hints (Chaper 8: "Meat IS Murder!) My only quibble is the title. I feel "Principles of Meat ART" captures the spirit of this delightful volume much more.
One glaring failure, otherwise quite tasty!.......2001-04-27
This volume has much to recommend itself and should keep you interested for a very long time. My only quibble is that it passes over any discussion of brisket. Fortunately, there's an excellent book just published which should fill this void: be sure to pick up "Snow Falling on Seders - The Complete Guide to the Cuisine of the Alaskan Jews."
Quick payment, prompt delivery, great merchandise, A ++++!.......2000-08-27
The best chapter in the book by far is "Hitler was a Vegetarian," which is on the accomanying CD-ROM. In this historic recording, author Max Judge (brother of Beavis and Butthead creator) gives a gripping account of this little-known chapter in Military History! Highly recommended.
I liked the book better than the movie........2000-08-25
I thought "Priciples of Meat Science" was just okay. But I think "The Sopranos" is much, much better. Hopefully, this is not the best that the Lifetime Channel can do. I wish they'd show the reruns of "Homicide, Life on the Street" again, because I can't watch "Court TV" (it's against my parole.)
A little dated........2000-08-24
I really don't understand what all the fuss is about this book. I once took a class called "Meat Analysis" when I was at Southern Houston Community Collge in the early 1970's-even though I was an Art major, it was a required course needed for graduation (an educational reform dating from the Connolly administration.) At the time I was living at the ValMar appartments, about 2 miles from school, and I used to have to take the freeway to get there. This was way before they started building all the skyscrapers, and Houston seemed much more like a "cow town" than the city it is now. There was this pool in the courtyard, and most days there was a little get-together in the backyard, just some people from the building who would go to mixers and get to know other folks and neighbors. It was mostly single people who lived there, and although I had a girlfriend at the time (Sammy Sue - we went to High School together, although we didn't know each other well enough to go to the prom together) I would still attend on occasion. There used to be cookouts, this way I could hang out with my neighbors and maybe flirt a little and at the same time study for my mid-terms in Meat Analysis. Ribs was the favorite dish one summer for some reason...I remember that was the year that "Billy, Don't Be A Hero" came out, and whenever that song came on the radio we'd all get real quiet; we didn't like to think about Vietnam all that much, we were more into socializing. Anyhow, there was this guy that used to come by for our barbecues, this guy George, who just came from living in Vermont or Delaware or something, I always get those small Northern states with Ivy League schools mixed up! He used to like to drink a lot, and boy did he ever love his barbecue!!! I'm not sure what he was doing there, since he lived over in the really *fancy* apartment building, the Chateaux Dijon, and we were a little lower rent. Some people think this rich kid went there because the women at the ValMar would be more easily impressed by his money. It was so weird, he would swagger in and within an hour he'd get so blotto that he'd slump into a lawn chair and start mumbling something about oil or terepin turtles or something, it changed from minute to minute.

Book Description
Thoroughly updated since the publication of the first edition, with new chapters on die design for operators, solids conveying and melting and twin-screw extruders, this book bridges the gap between theoretical studies and the practical experience of the processor in the extrusion of thermoplastic polymers and rubbers. Theoretical discussions generally give little attention to practical considerations, such as the conflict between productivity and product quality. Here however the authors give a clear representation of the physical mechanisms on which so much of the polymer processing industry depends, followed by guidance on operational strategies and the likely effects in terms of output, quality, uniformity and stability. Practical information is given on start-up trials, scale-up, product changing, dismantling and cleaning. Supported by over 40 tables and 176 figures, Extruder Principles and Operation will provide commercial processors with a logical background based on theory and experience, which will help them to obtain the best performance from their equipment, to recognize its limitations and to face new problems with confidence.

Book Description
The papers in this volume present theoretical insights and report practical applications both for neural networks, genetic algorithms and evolutionary computation. In the field of natural computing, swarm optimization, bioinformatics and computational biology contributions are no less compelling. A wide selection of contributions report applications of neural networks to process engineering, robotics and control. Contributions also abound in the field of evolutionary computation particularly in combinatorial and optimization problems. Many papers are dedicated to machine learning and heuristics, hybrid intelligent systems and soft computing applications. Some papers are devoted to quantum computation. In addition, kernel based algorithms, able to solve tasks other than classification, represent a revolution in pattern recognition bridging existing gaps. Further topics are intelligent signal processing and computer vision.

"A biography which reads like an adventure novel."
BOOKWATCH
It is 1907 and Doc Susie came to Fraser Colorado with a bad case of tuberculosis and a broken heart. But soon she forgot about her own troubles and lived a life so colorful that Hollywood wanted to make a movie of it. For the first time, here is an account of the real Doc Susie--the amazing, inspiring story of a woman who defied her times and her fears to help those who needed her.
Customer Reviews:
Awesome story!.......2007-05-24
Her story is incredible and inspiring! I had the privilege of going to the Fraser area immediately after reading the book. A museum has some of her things, including items mentioned in the book. I was really moved. You will not regret picking this one up!
The sacrifice of excellence.......2006-11-10
Doc Susie embodied a hardy pioneer spirit in the face of dreadful odds. TB, a general disregard for women physicians and awful living conditions in the high country of Colorado pretty much sums up what she faced at her new post. Not to worry........she prevailed! While she longed for a traditional family (husband and children), it was not to be. She DID make a life for herself, regained her health and brought the best medical help available at the time to the people of the area. Whadda' gal!
Easy reading.......2004-12-27
This is a worthwhile book for those who enjoy reading about 19th and early 20th century medicine, or the trials of women country doctors. It does not venture into the medical beliefs of the time, but one can gather this information reading between the lines. Doc Susie's story inspires awe at the great sacrifices she made in order to practice medicine.
"Doc Susie".......2000-03-30
Doc susie was a very good book. I enjoyey how Susan Anderson made her dreams possible.
History brought to life through well chosen words........1997-12-06
The reader feels the cold, the isolation geographically and as a woman entering a "man's" profession. Cornell's way with words draw us into a world little known to most of us, but one that expresses the hardiness of women in particular and Americans in general. Well researched and well written. It's not difficult to see that the author of Doc Susie had a passion for exposing Doc Susie's true grit, compassion and adventuresome spirit.

The Legend of Baby Doe: The Life and Times of the Silver Queen of the West
ASIN: 0933472218 |
Book Description
Baby Doe Tabor's love affair with Horace Tabor caused a sensational triangle and national scandal in the 1880s.
Customer Reviews:
A Rags to Riches to Rags.......2000-05-14
This book leaves the reader yearning for more detail about some of the other real life characters such as HAW Tabor and his first wife, Augusta. The life of Baby Doe spanned an incredible point in Colorado history and left me searching for more history on the rise and fall of Leadville, Colorado. The book is not long on detail but it is an excellent starting point for further readings.
Truth more fascinating than fiction!.......2000-02-07
This is a short read, but so interesting! Baby Doe Tabor's life story is something right out of a soap opera. What an incredible life she had. I sat down and read it at one sitting - each page has so many fascinating historical and dramatic elements. I agree with the previous reviewer - this would make for a fantastic movie (there was an earlier rather fictionalized one mentioned in this book). Drama, romance, passion, revenge, murder...it's all here and all true!
Unbelievable true story of a fascinating era!.......1999-09-28
The story involves love, adultery, incredible wealth, scandal- all in the beautiful Rockies. The book will have you hungry for more information about this fascinating woman. Her beauty took her from poverty in the dirty mining town of Leadville to Washington,DC where the President attended her scandalous and much talked about second wedding! She became one of the wealtheast women in the country spending sinful amounts of money.Great photos show her beauty.Would make a great movie. Drew Barrymore could play the part! There is a remarkable resemblence. The writing is unsophisticated but will keep your interest.
Colorful biography of a Colorado lady.......1998-06-09
After my first visit to the mountains of Colorado, I became fascinated by the legends of the women of the area. Leadville, Colorado is home to "The Unsinkable Molly Brown", of Titanic fame, and of the lesser known, but very interesting Baby Doe Tabor. Ms. Tabor was born in Wisconsin and travelled to Colorado with her first husband during the silver rush. After her husband abandoned her, she took her fate into her own hands -- in at brave and pretty respectable way for a lady of the era -- and what happens after that has become legend. Ms. Bancroft's book is an interesting, if subjective, portrayal of Baby Doe Tabor. Much of her material is taken from interviews obtained by a local woman who met with Baby Doe in her later years in Leadville, so the material may seem a bit biased. But, Baby Doe's take on the events of her life are fascinating. I will look into some of the books and places that are mentioned in the book to round out my understanding of this fascinating woman. I can't wait to travel back to Colorado and visit the sites of Baby Doe's life again.
