          Book Description

Diane Vaughan reconstructs the Ohio Revco case, an example of Medicaid provider fraud in which a large drugstore chain initiated a computer-generated double billing scheme that cost the state and federal government half a million dollars in Medicaid funds, funds that the company believed were rightfully theirs. Her analysis of this incident—why the crime was committed, how it was detected, and how the case was built—provides a fascinating inside look at computer crime. Vaughan concludes that organizational misconduct could be decreased by less regulation and more sensitive bureaucratic response.

3 out of 5 stars OK but too basic on ags ..........2004-06-23

I had great expectations of this book and thought that it would be a good primer to understanding ags futures, their behaviour & ideas (seasonality, calendar spreads, etc) on how to exploit them. However, it is more the traditional academic introduction on how to hedge ags futures, and the knowledge is very similar to any other options book. It is a good book for beginners & has some interesting intermediate strategies to explore. Well written but as an advanced options user, it adds little to persons who already knows futures & options in depth.

            Book Description

Complex plasmas are dusty plasmas in which the density and electric charges of the dust grains are sufficiently high to induce long-range grain-grain interactions, as well as strong absorption of charged-plasma components. Together with the sources replenishing the plasma such systems form a highly dissipative thermodynamically open system that exhibits many features of collective behaviour generally found in complex systems. Most notably among them are self-organized patterns such as plasma crystals, plasma clusters, dust stars and further spectacular new structures. Beyond their intrinsic scientific interest, the study of complex plasmas grows in importance in a great variety of fields, ranging from space-plasma sciences to applied fields such as plasma processing, thin-film deposition and even the production of computer chips by plasma etching, in which strongly interacting clouds of complex plasmas can cause major contamination of the final product.

Intended as first introductory but comprehensive survey of this rapidly emerging field, the present book addresses postgraduate students as well as specialist and nonspecialist researchers with a general background in either plasma physics, space sciences or the physics of complex systems.

              Book Description

Volume 9 contains 18 chapters devoted to recent developments in the field of template reactions
              and self-assembly or self-organization processes.
A large variety of approaches is described, spanning transition metal-based template strategies
allowing to build more and more complex and functionalized structures, to purely organic
procedures. The latter methodology has been applied to the construction of topologically
fascinating systems as well as to organized assemblies (biomimetic materials, mesaphases, etc)
with well defined structures and specific properties.

Jack Anderson, the author, has been writing different sorts of books for over forty years now. His primary collection of books are in the category of biography. He enjoys writing about prominent and eminent individuals that have somehow impacted society in one way or another. He was born in the United States and is now a retired author.

Norman Schwarzkopf was born into a strict conservative family. His father, a war hero in WWII, was set to have Norman follow in his footsteps. How right was he. Norman ended up graduating at the top of his class in high school as well as in college at West Point. He excelled at the sophisticated military schol which led him into politics and also a family. He met his future wife at a bar during college and ended up marrying after graduating. Through politics, Norman was the main commander in Vietnam as well as the Gulf War. He was awarded two Purple Hearts for his courage and dignity. This earned him his promulgation and fame in the area of war. After fighting in the east, the book went on to explain his personal life. Fishing, reading, family, and football were all personal likings of Norman. As he had children, he can only hope to pass on his family tradition, as his dad sure did.

                        Book Description

A rural Iowa veterinarian's humorous account of the animals and farmers he worked with from 1946 to 1972, a time of great changes in agriculture. "Doc" Sutcliffe was a well-known and loved "family doctor" for all the cows, horses, pigs, chickens, farm cats and mutts on Audubon, Iowa, area farms who were feeling a little poorly. His laugh-filled memoirs tell what rural veterinary life and business was like in those earlier days: the Jeep he bought to contend with deep mud roads, the liquor bottles his daughters washed for swine medicine containers, party lines tied up by gossiping farm wives, sows needing help to give birth in the middle of the night, learning to rope calves and kids, the miracle of milk fever treatment, and how to tell baby chihuahuas from squirrels. There are lots of good stories in this book, wryly and succinctly told, and often illustrated with cartoons by Dr. Sutcliffe. He was a man who truly enjoyed his work and who now shares some of the high and low points with interested readers.

                        Book Description

Get under the surface of the most powerful and feared leader of the French Revolution

A provincial lawyer from Arras, Robespierre (1758-94) dominated France at the height of the Revolution, the event which more than any other, shaped modern history. Robespierre had an enigmatic and contradictory personality, reclusive, cerebral and austere, yet at the same time both neurotic and theatrical with a solitary lifestyle, hidden away even at the height of his fame in modest lodgings with a family he trusted. Others have written extensively by concentrating on analyzing Robespierre's set-piece speeches to parliament and the Jacobian club, but John Hardman gets behind the polished but chilly surface of the public persona by examining Robespierre at his desk rather that at the rostrum. Concentrating on Robespierre's administration rather than his rhetoric, Robespierre offers not only a brilliant original analysis of its formidable protagonist, but also a dramatic vantage point from which to survey the main phase of the Revolution itself, from the fall of the ancien regeime to the end of the Terror. As a title in the very popular Profiles in Power series, this is not a biography, though inevitably it contains much biographical material, it instead analyzes the major features, achievements and failures of Robespierre's career.

John Hardman formerely of the University of Edinburgh has written Louis XVI (Yale 1993) and French Politics (Longman 1995).

                        1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2001-04-06

For a recent book about Robespierre, this work is not only disappointing, but terribly antiquated. One reason is because it relies on a discredited source, John Wilson Croker's 1835 essay on Robespierre, an error-filled and venomous document that is given little standing by modern day scholars of repute. If you wish to earn about Robespierre, you should first turn to David P. Jordan's Revolutionary Career of Maximilien Robespierre, then to Norman Hampson, J.M. Thompson, G. Rude and Max Gallo. I have read over 30 books in English and French on Robespierre, and those are the best, most informative and most balanced. Hardman's work, on the other hand, is a tired, hostile rehashing that relies too heaviy on Croker. Pass on this one.

In a time during the depression when thousands of little girls around the world were wearing Shirley Temple curls and taking dancing lessons, some parents took their ambitions for their children more seriously. They pulled up stakes, and found their way to Hollywood, to a city that was unique in the world, but it wasn't always what they had expected. It was a puzzling place for a child, and not all of the children took to it. The author found it an almost crushing experience, but she found refuge in the most unlikely places.

Founded in the late 4th century B.C. by its namesake, the conquering Alexander of Macedon, the Egyptian city of Alexandria enjoyed a near-perfect site: "a flat and narrow limestone expanse at the edge of the Nile delta, some thirty miles west of the great river's westernmost branch" that stood before a superb deep-water harbor. The Ptolemaic dynasty that Alexander founded produced, three centuries later, Egypt's last true pharaoh, Cleopatra, who built on the site fabulous structures of marble, granite, precious gems and metals, and glasswork--a palace complex renowned throughout the ancient world. Cleopatra, writes Laura Foreman, was both "a hard-headed pragmatist and at the same time a devout mystic," a stern ruler whose position was constantly challenged by rivals to the throne and the ever-expanding Roman empire alike. Caught on the losing side in a power struggle between the Roman generals Octavian and Antony, Cleopatra committed suicide; with her death came the end of Ptolemaic power.

History did not forget her, but the elements (particularly the rising Mediterranean sea) swallowed up much of the ancient city of Alexandria. In the late 1980s, an international team of archaeologists began to excavate the underwater ruins of ancient Alexandria. Foreman documents their work in this richly illustrated, well-written reconstruction of the ancient past, a book that armchair Egyptologists will find irresistible. --Gregory McNamee

                            Book Description

In 30 b.c., against the backdrop of Alexandria, Egypt, one of the most majestic of all ancient cities, a great queen proudly and defiantly took her life. More than two thousand years later, the world remains fascinated and haunted by this most intriguing woman, Cleopatra VII, yet practically everything we know about her is based on ancient text fragments, literature, and myth. Was she the temptress of legend? A ruthless, ambitious conqueror? Or was she a strong, brilliant, visionary ruler, a passionate and loyal woman, and a fiercely devoted mother?

Discovery Books presents Cleopatra's Palace: In Search of a Legend--a dramatic look at Cleopatra's world based on ancient accounts and modern scholarship. Gifted storyteller Laura Foreman brings Cleopatra's legendary tale to life, from the founding of Alexandria by Alexander the Great, to Cleopatra's ascent to the Egyptian throne amid treachery and betrayal, to her passionate alliances with Julius Caesar and Mark Antony and her doomed battle against Octavian.

But the legend doesn't end there. Cleopatra's Palace also presents the astounding recent findings of world-renowned underwater explorer Franck Goddio, who, with his team of underwater archaeologists, has succeeded in mapping the Royal Quarter of Ancient Alexandria, long submerged beneath the Mediterranean by cataclysmic earthquakes early in the millennium. In a fascinating narrative illustrated by exclusive underwater images, the expedition's successes are presented, including the discovery of such artifacts as jewelry, statues, sphinxes, rare pottery, and an ancient shipwreck, as well as architectural remains that were found on the site of this magnificent drama.

Lavishly illustrated with over 200 extraordinary full-color photographs, expedition images, fine-art reproductions, drawings, and maps, and interlaced with discussions on the art, architecture, religion, politics, and society of the Graeco-Roman period, Cleopatra's Palace is sure to captivate all lovers of discovery.

Blending biography, history, and modern exploration into great storytelling, Cleopatra's Palace re-creates the glory of Egypt's long-vanished capital and its Royal Quarter, and brings Egypt's greatest queen unforgettably to life.

5 out of 5 stars Very Well Written.......2005-05-31

She is the most famous woman of antiquity and with the very mention of Ancient Egypt, one rapidly thinks of Cleopatra and her seductions of two powerful Roman leaders.

Though the book does include some magnificent photographs of Cleopatra's palace, the book itself is very well written. Many have been interested with the myths of Cleopatra such as her "magnificent" beauty. Her "magnificent" beauty was showcased in the film "Cleopatra" with Elizabeth Taylor. Foreman tells the story wonderfully and pictures are just an added bonus. The story itself seduces the reader with the controvery regarding Cleopatra and her romances with two of the greatest military leaders of antiquity. But Foreman goes deeper than Cleopatra's romances. She goes back to Alexander the Great and his conquest in Egypt. And while you are reading the book, your imagination does go wild with the descriptions of palaces and romances and conquests and wars. However, it is difficult to put the whole story together as there are still many gaps missing and much of what is known of Cleopatra is found in fictional literature such as Shakespeare's for example. Though his plays do portray a beautiful Cleopatra, historians do argue her beauty was far from actual beauty. Historians say whatever she lacked in looks she made up in a fascinating personality and a dangerous intelligence only she possessed, but a personality and mind that Julius Caesar was seduced by and mostly in part that he was considered to be highly intelligent also. On part of Mark Antony, though he had great power, did not have the mind that Caesar did. Nonetheless, Cleopatra loved Antony. Though many by now know the story of Cleopatra, it still is a fascinating story to learn about. And what one does not know of the Egyptian queen, people can't help but wonder of her sexuality and her whole life in general.

I think this was a great book. I learned alot about Cleopatra and the pharoahs of her time. The roman pictures she appears in do not show her in as attractive a light as her Egyptian drawings do. But, I don't think anyone can say for sure what she really looked like. I am sure she must have been a beauty nonetheless. The text is quite easy to read, and the pictures are spectacular. Good Choice!

                            5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful!.......2001-02-28

I loved this book. This is truly great reading. This book was so fascinating, I stayed up all night just to finish it. We are taken beyond mere history, and into the depths of the Roman rulers lives.

The author does an excellent job of sweeping you into the vast Roman Empire that had reined supreme for many years. From Alexander the Great, to the his successors of Ptolemys', Cleopatras' and Berenices', we take a brief but intimate look into their lives. The morally corrupt family that they were, reining high for many generations over this strange and exotic land.

Interesting as it is, Cleopatra was not actually Egyptian. Although depicted in many ancient drawings as a pharaoh, she was actually of Roman-Greek descent. Her rein to the throne was given to her through succession and birth.

Facts do not always play a key role in this book, as information is not always on hand. The author tends to insert information from her own imagination when she sees fit to do so. I had no problem with this, as she makes it clear that those are her own suppositions. This book reads out like a good fiction novel.

Towards the end of the book, we travel with the teams who made some of this research possible. There are many beautiful pictures throughout. This makes a great coffee table book. I think this is a great addition to any library, and for anyone to sit down and enjoy!

1 out of 5 stars Nice pictures, but a waste of time.......1999-08-14

I bought this book expecting to see a lot more information on the archaeology and actual history of Cleopatra's palace and Alexandria, but instead, found a sappy, pseudo-romantic fictionalized treatment of Cleopatra, Caesar, and Antonius. I wish the authors had included more examples of other palaces, some more maps and reconstructions based on other archaeology. If I had wanted a historical romance, I would have bought one. I feel this book was a waste of $$.

5 out of 5 stars This book is really beautiful!.......1999-03-19

I loved the show on Discovery Channel and this book offers even more history on the life and legend of Cleopatra--as well as the amazing photos of finding her underwater ruins. This is great for the family and history buffs will love it.

Egypt's legendary queen (69-30 B.C.) comes to vibrant life in this colorful, readable biography. Historian Michael Foss combines careful scholarship with exciting storytelling to capture Cleopatra's complex personality within the context of the turbulent world-power politics of her day. Cunning, ruthless, nervy, unquenchably feminine yet imperiously regal, Cleopatra made her own rules. Foss illuminates the statesmanship that gained Ptolemaic Egypt some measure of status and independence in the shadow of all-powerful Rome, as well as the sexual allure that captivated Julius Caesar and Marc Antony. The Search for Cleopatra is both good history and good fun.

Cleopatra would not qualify as "black" because she was not a "woman of color" as some falsely allege. She came from a Dynasty that intermarried with one another. Her ethnicity was Hellenic Macedonian. She and the Dynasty she belonged to spoke Greek. . If there was even a hint that her origins were anything but that of a Hellenic Dynasty who ruled over Egypt then the ancient Greek and Roman writers would have stated as such given they did so with other people who were of "mixed" origins. Plus Cleopatra's family are Greek descendants from Northern Greece and an ancient painting from Vergina, Greece depicts Ptolemy I Soter during a hunt as being fair in coloring. Some ancient writers even claim him the son of King Philip, making the Ptolemiac Dynasty descendants from the Hellenic Argead Dynasty of whom the Macedonian royal family claimed descendant from. Its only been in modern history that this myth about Cleopatra being "black or mixed race" came about. This theory originated in the 16th century - that is thousands of years and centuries after Cleopatra's death. Most writers who question her heritage are not even ancient writers or historians but modern revisionists. Cleopatra's paternal grandmother was Cleopatra IV, her paternal/maternal grandfather's(Ptolemy IX) sister. Cleopatra's maternal grandmother was Cleopatra Selena, again the sister of her paternal/maternal grandfather's(Ptolemy IX) AND the sister of her paternal grandmother(Cleopatar IV). Making Cleopatra's paternal grandmother(Cleopatar IV), maternal grandmother(Cleopatra Selena) and paternal/maternal grandfather(Ptolemy IX) all brother and sisters, in other words the brother had children with both of his sisters. The parents of Cleopatra VII's father were Ptolemy IX and Cleopatra IV and the parents of Cleopatra's mother were Ptolemy IX and Cleopatra Selena: making Cleopatra VII's parents both brother and sister and cousins all at the same time. This was a common practice among the Ptolemeis, marrying their sisters, bothers, cousins, aunts, uncles, parents. The Ptolemies were not liked by native Egyptians who they considered "foreigner rulers". In fact Cleopatra's father survived two assassination attempts, this was the reason why they kept to themselves and married amongst each other, they distrusted foreigners. Which why the likelihood of Cleopatra's grandmother being anyone outside the Ptolemaic family tree, ie. native Egyptian, Nubian, Hebrew or anything else is zero given the xenophobic views the Ptolemies.

5 out of 5 stars The Power and the Glory.......2002-03-24

I like the author's philosphy of history: in the first chapter of "The Search for Cleopatra," Foss writes that our picture of the past "is not some absolute of historical truth founded on a mountain of small certain facts." Rather, history "reveals itself in drama, passion, elemental conflict, emblematic events that become the basis for mythologies."

Cleopatra was a fascinating character, a myth in life and death. She was more brilliant than beautiful, a consummate politican and a ruthless leader. She was the mistress of the two most powerful Roman leaders of her era, partly because she wanted her Ptolemaic dynasty to survive and partly because she seems to have been genuinely devoted to her two lovers.

The "Search for Cleopatra" is not a biography as such. Rather, it tells the story of a pivotal time in which Cleopatra played a central role. Foss sketches all of the major protagonists--Julius Caesar, Marc Antony, Octavian and a host of lesser characters--against the background of the Roman civil wars and Cleopatra's skilled but ultimately unsuccessful attempt to come out on top in a very high stakes game.

Was Cleopatra a cruel, calculating woman, a person who did not hesitate to execute her younger brother and sister in order to rule unchallenged? Or was she a loving mother, concerned about the welfare of her children and genuinely in love with Julius Caesar and Marc Antony? As with any complex character, the answer may be "both," and this well-written book does an excellent job of making a powerful woman and a dangerous time a bit more understandable to the modern reader.

If you are interested in the life and times of Cleopatra, you might also want to pick up "Alexandria: City of the Western Mind" by Theodore Vrettos. Vrettos devotes a substantial part of his book to telling the story of Caesar, Antony and Cleopatra, but he also describes how Alexandria transmitted Greek culture to the modern world. Another interesting view of the subject is "Not by a Nose," an essay by Josiah Ober in "What If? 2," which ponders how the world might have been different if Antony and Cleopatra had defeated Octavian at the Battle of Actium.

5 out of 5 stars Feminine Wiles; Oriental Guile.......2001-09-28

Whether or not Cleopatra would qualify as "black" by contemporary definitions (and unless we magically got a DNA sample, that possibility simply can't be ruled out, given the limited information about her antedecents), we can be sure of two things: first, that she was vilified as have most other powerful women throughout the ages; second, that she was despised by the Romans as representing an alien, "Oriental" culture. Foss writes well, and by judicious use of the limited source material he re-tells the epic tale of the Queen of the Nile. The main elements (Caesar, Antony, asp, etc.) are thanks to Shakespeare, famous; less well-known are the tortured politics of Hellenistic Egypt. Cleopatra's family, the Ptolemys (the Macedonian dynasty which inherited the pharoah's throne from Alexander the Great) would satisfy any modern definition of "dysfunctional." With their unique blend of habitual incest, infidelity, profligacy, fratricide, patricide, matricide and perennial regicide, it took a political genius just to survive in the Ptolemy family, and Foss infers from Cleopatra's relative longevity that she was just such a genius. Provided you can get your head around relationships like "wife-mother" and "uncle-husband," this is a great yarn.

4 out of 5 stars Why Do You Care?.......2001-06-08

Why do you care if Cleopatra was African or Caucasian or mixed? Does it matter? You should not be thinking about the colour of her skin, more about the things she accomplished in her life! I look at the reviews above, and all I see is raving controversy instead of reviews (I am not a hypocrite...) I found this book to be extremely interesting, and insightful into the life of a great queen. Anyone who is interested in the Queen of the Nile should take a moment to read this.

                            3 out of 5 stars Cleopatra.......2001-05-06

I think that some of the reviews have missed the point for this book. The real controversy is not Cleopatra's ethnicity, because we have documentation on this that dates to her era. She was a Ptolemy; therefore of Macedonian descent. Study your ancient history and put forth a little effort into some research. From most accounts that I have read, all point to her being extremely proud of that Macedonian heritage. You in the 21st century, believe that you know more about this historical figure, than the writers of the first century. In this, you must agree with me that the information we have now, is inaccurate compared to the relatively recent information that they had. You cannot rewrite history.
