        Book Description

Comprehensive research projects carried out at the Institute of Steel and Timber Construction at the University of Innsbruck over the last decade have resulted in essential know-how about the behaviour of steel and composite beam-to-column joints, representing an important contribution to the economical competitiveness of composite and mixed structures. At the same time the response of composite beams and slabs with partial shear connection and incomplete shear interaction were analysed, yet without first considering the interaction between beams and joints.
On the one hand, this book collects and refines the results gained until now on partial shear connection and joint representation, including the knowledge gained while working out proposals for Eurocode 4. On the other hand, it develops a calculation tool for studying the behaviour of beams with incomplete shear interaction in combination with semi-continuous joints. For this purpose all the non-linearities of the material, the shear interface and the joint are taken into consideration. Since an appropriate finite-element program reflecting the joints does not exist, and since the handling of the program should be as simple as possible allowing the results to be exactly custom-made in view of specific interests, a special computer program was developed. Thus far non-linear calculations for the characterisation of composite sections and semi-continuous joints have been realised, and an overall semi-continuous beam analysis should follow, based on the combination of sections and joints.

4 out of 5 stars Does The Trick.......2006-03-29

This is a huge library of c routines to do just about anything. The only sore spots are some of the vector and matrix routines. They are divided up so that some very simple operations require several routines. Of course this was done for flexibility, but some may find that writing their own is more efficient. Also, the two point boundary value problem solvers are very limited and the DE section only contains constant time-step solvers. The special function section is excellent, however. Nevertheless, despite the limitations, I have found this to be a gold mine of routines and an extremely useful book. I can often find stuff here that is almost impossible to find elsewhere.

        Book Description

On the day that Lincoln was inaugurated in 1861, twenty-seven-year-old William Dorsey Pender, en route to the provisional Confederate capital in Montgomery, Alabama, hurriedly scribbled a note to his wife, Fanny. So began a prolific correspondence between a rising Confederate officer and his cherished wife that would last until Pender was mortally wounded at Gettysburg.

First published by UNC Press in 1965, Pender's letters are filled with personal details, colorful descriptions, and candid opinions of such important figures as Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, J. E. B. Stuart, and A. P. Hill. His comments on his military activities and aspirations and the challenges of command, combined with his husbandly advice and affection, sketch an intimate and unvarnished portrait of the man who was perhaps the most distinguished North Carolina commander.

5 out of 5 stars Letters revealing an intimate husband and wife relationship.......2000-02-11

I have a great interest in the U.S. Civil War and I have read many books on it. You always here about the most notable generals like Lee, Jackson, Stuart, Grant, Sherman, etc.., but you hardly here of the lesser known ones like Pender. Being a North Carolinian, it is very gratifying to know that some great men and officers fought from your state. Pender was one of those men. In this book, his letters to his wife reveal his true character. He was a loving husband and father, a dedicated soldier, and a man of faith who believed himself to be very unworthy before God. As the war progresses, his letters become more mature and earnest in nature. He desires for an end to the war; to live to a good old age with his wife; and to see his children grow up. He is a strict disciplanarian as an officer and he soon earns the respect of his troops and his superiors including Lee and A.P. Hill. Just before Gettysburg, he is promated to the rank of major general at the age of 29 and fights gallantly on the first day. Unfortunately, he is wounded on the second day and dies a few weeks later. His death is mourned by his troops and especially by Lee and Hill. Pender was a promising officer who died to early in the war and at a very young age. His letters are heartfelt and very touching; a must read for anyone interested in Pender and great officers of the Civil War.

          Book Description

August Krogh, the son of a brewer, studied zoology in Copenhagen and earned his doctoral degree under the physiologist Christian Bohr, the father of the world-renowned nuclear physicist Niels Bohr. Krogh's unusual ability to construct instruments and complex apparatuses and his intuitive understanding of physical principles made it possible for him to improve on Bohr's methods. His findings led him to challenge Christian Bohr's ideas about oxygen secretion, and when Bohr refused to accept his findings, Krogh unwillingly came into a painful conflict with his own mentor. Krogh's continued studies of how oxygen is supplied to the tissues led to his realization that the blood flow in the finest blood vessels, the capillaries, has to be regulated through a mechanism that opens and closes the capillaries according to the tissue's need for oxygen. This idea and his scientific proof were at the time so new and revolutionary that he was promptly (in 1920) awarded the Nobel Prize. His fame in Denmark and all over the world continued to grow until his death in 1949. His scientific discoveries extended from respiration, exercise physiology and capillary physiology into comparative osmoregulation, isotope studies, active transport of ions in plants and animals, and finally insect flight. Another dramatic story of Krogh's life began when he introduced insulin production in Denmark in 1922. This move saved his own wife's life as well as numerous other lives and helped make Denmark's Novo-Nordisk the largest producer of insulin in the world today. Krogh's wife, Marie, became a physician and a renowned scientist in her own right. Throughout their harmonious marriage and partnership, Marie played an important role in her husband's life both scientifically and personally. Written by the proud daughter of August and Marie Krogh, this biography is based on numerous letters, scientific papers, interviews, symposia, and other sources as well as the author's own knowledge of her parents. The intertwining of the scientific work and personal lives of these two remarkable people is beautifully illustrated in a well-rounded picture of their struggles and triumphs. It is a unique book, full of human warmth and scientific understanding.

            Book Description

Translated from the best selling Romanian edition, Flying against the Arrow, this quasi-autobiographical book describes the life of a talented young man living under extreme political conditions, paying particular attention to the `unbearable 80s'. The book vividly portrays the difficulties encountered by a young intellectual trying to shape himself under the oppressive Ceauºescu regime and provides a stark depiction of a man's intellectual suffocation under hard-line socialist rule. The book's overall significance is therefore far more wide-ranging than just Romania or the 1980s.

"I do not know how others kept their integrity under communism, but I was saved through my friends. Since as far back as I can tell, I have been surrounded by the kind of people whom I might, if somewhat pompously, call friends of ideas. This way, my intellectual life before 1989 had nothing whatever to do with the school, the faculty, or the public space, but was carried on entirely within my circle of friends." From the Introduction by the author

            2 out of 5 stars Patapievici: a star without a sky.......2003-07-03

Mr. Patapievici is a hotly contested figure in Romania. Not the most representative or even known dissenter during the 80s, his fame is the product of an emergent market of power and prestige in Romanian culture. Supported and promoted by elitist groups, the social ethos he promotes is an elitist one, too. His more recent ideas harken back to a form of 19th century conservatism that might seem quaint if it weren't extravagant to the point of bigotry. ...

5 out of 5 stars There is no drawback in shining with intelligent emotions !.......2000-07-02

Romanian bestseller, translated now into English by Ms. Mirela Ad?sc?li?ei. This is a book about the making of a strong character. If it was possible at all, it's because mind matters. Whoever thinks about this unique story of a human being as a manifesto for elitism either has not lived there, in those times, or doesn't know about writing at all. For the spiritual " side " of intelligence should always be reason enough for surviving physically, wherever and whenever doing so comes at a premium price. We all paid such prices one way or another, at some point in our own " flights ". We knew, for instance, even at that point in time, that Horia would be the last one to " turn off the light " back home. He never did. I think we all owe him some respect for that. Indeed, the following published works of Horia-Roman Patapievici spread much more light than we thought possible in those times, ?n b?taia s?ge?ii...

I happen to be the one to whom the book was dedicated. And confess I am more than honored. For me, the arrow's path will always subtend a direction for that fire that noone can ever extinguish.

            3 out of 5 stars paradox.......2000-02-07

A beautiful book, written by a person with a deep sensitivity toward structures of life and feeling. In the book's narrative, the process of intellectual formation during communism steams out from a non-political, non-dissident, non-resistance positionality to the regime. The style and content is literary; only retrospectively can we consider such a book "political": it is basically a diary, a beautiful, lyrical one, although the philosophical references are somehow doubtful. Where there other subliminal political spaces of intellectual formation in communist Romania, spaces located at the periphery of the hegemonic discourses, such as pop and rock music, arts, mathematics, sports, and even alternative literature and poetry of the Mircea Cartarescu and Mircea Dinescu type? Finally, how can one reconcile this author's ideas with his other publishing, where, although dedicated to an anti-communist ethos, he basically supports the abolition of equal and universal suffrage and adheres to a "white supremacist" type of discourse, mocking the integrative, multicultural stance of North-American universities, as "American communism," "Nazism" and "Leninism" together, praising the culture of the "white man, ethnic Romanian, Christian-Orthodox, and heterosexual?" The publication of H.-R. Patapievici's diary in English is both a start (finally enabling regional voices to be heard in the mainstream North-American discourses) and an ambivalently bold act from the part of the Central European University, in the context of this author's aforementioned political proclivities.

            5 out of 5 stars Insightful.......2000-02-02

Patapievici is one of the most interesting intellectuals in Eastern Europe. His sharp criticism of Romania's nationalistic illusions has greatly contributed to the country's democratic progress. This book is not his best, but certainly an exciting one.

Margaret Elley Felt's autobiographical Gyppo Logger, originally published in 1963, tells a story almost universally overlooked in the history of the logging industry: the emergence of family-based, independent contract or "gyppo" loggers in the post-World War II timber economy, and the crucial role of women within that economy. For seven years Margaret Felt was her husband's partner in their logging business--driving truck, keeping the wage rolls, and jawboning her way into more credit at the supply stores. "Gyppo Logger demonstrates how gyppo wives remade the formerly masculine terrain of logging through their unpaid but vital economic activities in both private and public forums. And it was, arguably, the success of these family businesses that facilitated the dramatic and rapid physical redesign of Northwest forests"-- Robert E. Walls

                          Book Description

The World Economic and Social Survey 2004 examines recent developments in and prospects for the world economy and addresses their implications for the developing countries in the struggle against poverty. In 2004, the world economy continued the recovery that had started in 2003 and the indications are that this progress will be sustained into 2005. Nevertheless, there are a number of immediate dangers, most notably higher oil prices and the large trade imbalances of some of the world's major economies. Economic progress in India and China is likely to enable the world as a whole to achieve the Millennium Development Goal of reducing poverty by half by 2015. At the same time, many of the poorest countries are expected to fall well short. The Survey analyzes these and other issues in depth and also includes statistical tables, which give standardized data on international trade and finance, incorporating current data and forecasts. It is essential for decision makers in government and business, and provides valuable information to all interested in the trends of global economy.

                            Book Description

Authoritative and reliable, the 2000 World Economic and Social Survey offers unique insight and commentary on current trends and policies in the world economy. Essential to the business world, this Survey chronicles a remarkable recovery after the crisis years 1997-1999. It also forecasts continued and increasingly widespread, economic growth heralded by the revolution in information and communications technology. This revolution offers new possibilities for tackling the age-old problem of poverty, however, there is concern that it may also widen the "digital divide" and leave behind those caught in the poverty trap. World Economic and Social Survey 2000 also aims to identify some of the actions that countries can take to start a period of rapid and sustained growth to improve living standards over a short period of time. Also included in this Survey, is an extensive statistical annex of economic, trade and financial indicators, incorporating current data and forecasts.
