First Farmers examines the reasons for the multiple primary origins of agriculture, looks at relations between hunter-gatherers and farmers, and addresses issues of agricultural adoption, the origins and dispersal histories of language families, and the dispersal histories of biological populations. Bellwood offers discussion of regional agricultural origins in, and dispersals out of, these areas: the Middle East, central Africa, China, New Guinea, Mesoamerica, and the northern Andes. The linguistic survey covers the origins and dispersals of major language families such as Indo-European, Austronesian, Sino-Tibetan, Niger-Congo, and Uto-Aztecan.
Customer Reviews:
The single book to read about the Neolithic.......2006-03-10
Bellwood, an archaeologist specializing in Austronesian populations, has compiled a vast body of evidence from archaeology, linguistics, and genetics, and synthesized it into a very readable book about the origin and dispersal of the Neolithic.
Bellwood is known for his view that the major language phyla of the contemporary world are most likely to be descended from the languages spoken by peoples who first developed agriculture. Since agricultural populations grow faster than foraging populations, and since much evidence shows that agriculture is not readily adopted by foragers, it appears that the Neolithic dispersal was largely a phenomenon of migration, in which the first farmers carried their languages and genes with them.
The book is full of detail, presenting a nuanced view of the Neolithic as it developed in five or six origin areas, and then dispersed outward. Technical concepts, such as "glottochronology," are explained without much fuss. Most of the genetic data has been collected within the past decade, and casts an intriguing light on the movements of people in prehistoric times.

Book Description
This book tells the fascinating story of the discovery of buckminsterfullerene, a perfectly symmetrical soccer-ball shaped molecule composed of 60 carbon atoms. This new molecule, one of a large family of carbon cage molecules called "fullerenes"--represents a new form of carbon, complementing
such well-known materials as diamond and graphite. Its discovery has revolutionized our understanding of carbon, once the most familiar elements. It has heralded a new chemistry, a new range of high-temperature superconductors and some marvelous new concepts in the architecture of large carbon
structures. In this account, prize-winning science writer Jim Baggott tells the compelling story of buckminsterfullerene, from its natural occurrence in the cold chemistry of interstellar clouds to its accidental, stunning creation in a modern chemistry laboratory, and the subsequent development of
one of today's fastest-growing scientific fields. By combining a lucid and entertaining style with scientific accuracy, the author has written a book that will appeal to general readers and chemists alike.

Book Description
Based on extensive interviews which the author had with Douglas Bader during the last thirteen years of his Bader's life, this biography tells the full story from his childhood to his work with the disabled in later life. After a flying accident in which he lost his legs, Douglas Bader was invalided out of the RAF. At the outbreak of war in 1939 he was recalled to the RAF and returned to flying. He fought in the Battle of Britain and later in nearly one hundred offensive fighter patrols. Following a mid-air collision he was captured and became a prisoner-of-war and was imprisoned in Colditz. The story of his war-time activities, both in the air and as a POW, is told in some detail and makes fascinating reading. These activities helped him to achieve celebrity status and in later life much of his time was given to promoting causes for the disabled. John Frayn Turner's account of a remarkable life is a fitting tribute to one of the country's most heroic figures.

Life Behind Glass: A Personal Account of Autism Spectrum Disorder
ASIN: 1853029718 |
Book Description
To many of the people who live or work with an individual with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), the processes by which those with autism make sense of the world around them may seem mysterious. In Understanding and Working with the Spectrum of Autism Wendy Lawson demonstrates these processes using comparisons from the non-ASD world to help professionals, families and carers to relate to and communicate with people with ASD better. Exercises at the back of the book encourage the reader to reflect on what has been discussed. The second part of the book contains chapters presenting a range of interventions and strategies for particular situations. Wendy illustrates her text with examples from her own life and from the lives of those she has met or worked with to clarify her points. She analyses ASD characteristics and examines interventions for dealing with social skills, anger management and self-esteem. Stress, its effects on the families of children with autism, and how best it can be alleviated, is also explored.
Wendy writes in the light of her personal experience of an autism spectrum disorder as well as that of the available literature to create a book that is both readable and wide-ranging, furthering understanding of the links and differences between neurotypical individuals and those with ASD. Her book is an essential introduction to ASD for social workers, nurses, health professionals and those working in related fields.

Why So Much Interest Why So Much Hidden!.......1999-09-19
The book is yet another giving us additional insight into Hillary Rodham. I question the need to dissect such people. There willingness to place themselves into the arena of political public humiliation in the name of leadership says far more than any analysis. At the same time, are we so blind to believe what keeps her with her husband, a husband who betrays the vows of their marriage almost beyond what he promises the nation? She helps ease the burdens of greatness, whether that greatness turns into a heroic legacy, infamy of deeds without excuses or just plain becoming a national joke. In any and all events, Hillary has stood by and eased his burden by sharing it. They raised a fine young woman and for all the faults, allegations and innuendoes it is hard to argue that bad parents raise bad children, Chelsea is a product of something, any all critics must admit, it may be the bonds of the marriage of Bill and Hillary. This does not excuse all of the lies, misinformation or abuse of power, bad like life no one is all bad all the time. Good reading so long as you read all books about Hillary.
An excellent investigation of what might motivate Hillary!.......1998-09-18
I just had to reread, The First Lady ,to try again to understand what makes this very intelligent woman tick. Why does she stay with this guy, The President? The Flaherty boys open a window to the opportunistic soul that seems to drive our first lady. Monica Lewinsky, Paula Jones, et al. all make a little more sense after this window has been unlocked and opened. A great quick read!

Book Description
The life of a revolutionary who battled against apartheid in South Africa as a guerrilla for the Azanian People's Liberation Army, the armed wing of the Pan African Congress, is detailed in this memoir. From his military training in Guinea and Tanzania to his underground activities in Lesotho and South Africa, Letlapa Mphahlele spent much of his life in exile or on the run. His experiences offer a glimpse into the living conditions of guerrilla soldiers and include an array of characters, some of whom have gone on to play a prominent role in current South African politics. More than a political history, this book is also a personal journey, written with humor, intimacy, and lyricism.

Shortly after Claudia Bepko signed the contract to write a book celebrating her 18-year partnership with her lesbian lover, the two of them broke up. Bepko went on to write this book about rejecting the Catholicism of her youth, coming to grips with her lesbianism in the 1970s, forging a long-term lesbian relationship, and learning to re-shape her life after the end of her 'marriage.' For anyone who has ever wondered what really goes on inside someone else's relationship, this book may be the one to tell you.
Customer Reviews:
Highly enjoyable and now I need more.......2005-11-16
I mostly read fiction but the book descriptions were enticing and the two reviews convinced me I had to read it. I found the book and devoured it in one sitting - now I need to read more by the author. This reads as a very honest and thought provoking story and anyone (race, gender, religion outlook on life) will find interesting.
Enjoyable and Thought-Provoking Read..........2005-04-11
I like to mix up my reading list periodically by throwing in a non-fiction book from my usual genre (lesbian literature). With "Heart's Progress" I'm glad I did. This book tells the story of many of us who got married before we figured out who we really were (or had the courage to admit it). In sharing her life with the reader, Bepko does an outstanding job of relaying the feelings and complications associated with coming out in an unforgiving society.
The book invoked feelings of sadness, frustration, deep-rooted love, absolute anger, fear, and many others. I laughed, I cried, I was both sad and happy to see it end. If you or a friend are having issues related to coming out (or trying to define yourself), this book is for you.
An outstanding book. A must read for everyone!.......1998-08-01
Claudia Bepko has written an outstanding book. Although written as a memoir, it could be more accurately called the life story of any one of us -- gay or straight. Everyone will find some part of this book where they see themselves in similar circumstances. The author used vivid descriptive language that makes it a pleasure to read. I am anxiously awaiting her next book!

Book Description
Like many lesbians, Claudia Bepko was a young woman when she first admitted to having homosexual feelings--but it took a lifeless heterosexual marriage and a fierce attraction to a female colleague before she was able to live openly in a relationship with another woman. In this moving memoir, she relives the painful and poignant awakenings she experienced in her early life: from her blue-collar Catholic upbringing and alcoholic father to her exhilaration and confusion as she entered college during the height of the sexual revolution where she encountered her first lovers--Molly, a fellow student, and David, whom she would eventually marry. "The different among us tell our stories because we are all only human and so much need a witness to the truth," writes Bepko. Having built a career in the early years of the women's movement, she found the courage to question her heterosexuality. Approaching middle age in the midst of "lesbian chic," she finds herself finally able to move from an identity shrouded in otherness to a life that celebrates the freedom and normalcy of loving whomever one is destined to love.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing..........1999-09-30
I eagerly began this book, having read "Too Good for Her Own Good", also written by Bepko. While there were many interesting passages about her early life, I quickly became frustrated with the monotonous and too-frequent blow-by-blow descriptions of Bepko's verbal fights with her partner Alice. Too much navel-gazing...and what was the point of all that spousal-sparring overkill? I skipped much of the book, relieved to see it end. I'm glad that Claudia's story resolved happily, with her reunion with the love of her life. I'd have much preferred more stories about her second time 'round with Molly....
Love, Pain, and the Reality of Life.......1999-03-05
There is so much reality in this book, and so much I could relate to.
There's the initial confusion about one's sexual orientation, first recognizing those feelings and then later being passionately, deeply in love, dealing with homophobia, finding a life partner and then all the conflicts and pain that can involve.
Claudia's feelings so frequently reflected my own.
She tells of the dissatisfaction of a heterosexual marriage.
The hard effort of trying to make a relationship with her lesbian partner work.
Moving from the city to the country. The trauma of an accident, and losing everything, but eventually rebuilding one's life, and finding love again.
Very honestly and well written book. I highly recommend it.
This book relates not just to being lesbian, but to being human.
