More than a book, this is a terrific 'tool/process' in a three-ring binder, for guiding organizational change, which includes a forms disk. The authors present a systems-based approach to organizational change which is team-based. This is a field guide complete with checklists, charts, forms, graphics, criteria for choosing team members, guide to key meetings, a tracking and coordination matrix for monitoring progress, a summary of agreements, and agenda for meetings. This handbook is divided into three parts: developing the foundations for change; designing change; and implementing change. It is crafted for use by consultants, but is intended to make the organizational design methodology explicit and accessible so that clients can learn the change process and and shape it to fit their needs.

This is a powerful reference with enormous potential value, provided there is the WILL to take action and action IS taken. Of course, no consultant or book, or inpirational speaker for that matter, can make change happen; that is up to YOU, the client. There are a lot of sheep books out there, but for beginner shepherds, I always recommend this clasic book. Many seasoned shepherds still refer to Ron's book for his solid information. First published in 1983, Ron Parker updated "The Sheep Book" in 2001, and it is better than ever.

Great for folks just starting out........2003-06-29

This book will tell the newcomer all the basics and touches upon the economics in a non-technical manner.

The book is a good source for adults and teens.

Ron Parker has done a good job simplifying technical jargon so the novice has a chance to avoid pestering other shepherds with strange questions.

Maihafer's book is an enjoyable read for the person who is either interested in military history or a leader who has to make tough decisions.

Ranging from the Revolutionary War to Desert Storm, Maihafer describes the story of 15 leaders and the tough decisions they faced. Examples include: Daniel Morgan, Ulysses Grant, Robert Lee, Stonewall Jackson, Billy Mitchell, Douglas MacArthur, Maxwell Taylor, and Norman Schwarzkopf.

The author describes the unique circumstances facing each leader and the choices he had to make.

All in all, an excellent read for both the military history buff and leader who needs encouragement in making tough decisions.

Brave Decisions Goes Beyond the Battlefield.......2000-12-20

This is a great compendium of moral and ethical choices made at various stages during fifteen different officers' careers. Colonel Maihafer outlines the uncommon courage displayed by some of the most famous and also some unheralded leaders in our military history. From Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant to Patrick O'Rourke and Alexander Haig the author walks us through very tough decisions that shaped the lives and careers of these great men. He couches the choices they made through the context of their personal thoughts and circumstances. Instead of exposing the reasons why the commanders decided to commit to battle on a particular day or to wage a certain campaign, Maihafer explores questions like why did Lee decide to fight for Virginia and the Confederacy, and not the U.S. constitution he was sworn to defend before the outbreak of war. Why did Maxwell Taylor, as Superintendent of West Point, over-ride the academic board and institute the academy's first formal class on leadership, and why did he ultimately resign as the Army Chief of Staff? Brave Decisions explores these questions and more throughout its pages.

Patton once stated that an officer's career is made up of about three minutes worth of time when he or she actually makes decisions that have great impact. This book helps illuminate a few precious seconds of the careers of fifteen courageous officers. Any leader, whether assuming command or not, will benefit from referring to the chapters of Maihafer's book. Cadets to general officers make various choices throughout their military careers. Brave Decisions illustrates a few of those choices at each level of command. In 1866 Patrick Manson, a young Scottish doctor fresh from medical school, left London to launch his career in China as a port surgeon for the Imperial Chinese Customs Service. For the next two decades, he served in this outpost of British power in the Far East, and extended the frontiers of British medicine. In 1899, at the twilight of his career and as the British Empire approached its zenith, he founded the London School of Tropical Medicine. For these contributions Manson would later be called the "father of British tropical medicine."

In Imperial Medicine: Patrick Manson and the Conquest of Tropical Disease Douglas M. Haynes uses Manson's career to explore the role of British imperialism in the making of Victorian medicine and science. He challenges the categories of "home" and "empire" that have long informed accounts of British medicine and science, revealing a vastly more dynamic, dialectical relationship between the imperial metropole and periphery than has previously been recognized. Manson's decision to launch his career in China was no accident; the empire provided a critical source of career opportunities for a chronically overcrowded profession in Britain. And Manson used the London media's interest in the empire to advance his scientific agenda, including the discovery of the transmission of malaria in 1898, which he portrayed as British science.

The empire not only created a demand for practitioners but also enhanced the presence of British medicine throughout the world. Haynes documents how the empire subsidized research science at the London School of Tropical Medicine and elsewhere in Britain in the early twentieth century. This book is a fasinating story about the life style of living an adventureous bush life in the Alaska wilderness. It is a book that you can pick up and read at one time as I did, or you can read it a chapter at a time. The book is a series of stories told in a reflective manner of experiences of making a living in the Alaska wildeness by trapping, guiding hunters, subsistance hunting and fishing, commercial fishing, raising a family and flying as a commercial bush pilot in the state of Alaska from the 1950's to the present. The author Jeff Davis has written this book so that it captures these stories in a presntation that reflects them being written as you would be listening to John Swiss recant his stories and memories in his own words from a long unique life of making a living in bush Alaska. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that loves adventure and especially hunting.
