A new metaharmonic (Helmholtz) hypercomplex function theory........2000-07-10

This book contains the full development of a new kind of function theory that is closely connected with several interesting physical problems. This new theory is that generated by the metaharmonic generalized Dirac (Moisil-Theodorescu) operator, which factorizes the Helmholtz operator, and which leads to a very nice and powerful eight-dimensional generalization of classical complex analysis. The authors' approach is to stress the importance of integral representations to solve boundary value problems and then to apply these tools to handle some physical problems.

The contents are: Introduction and Some Remarks on Generalizations of Complex Analysis; Alpha-holomorphic Function Theory; Electrodynamical Models; Massive Spinor Fields; Hypercomplex Factorization, Systems of Non-linear Partial Differential Equations Generated by Fueter-type Operators; 4 appendices.

Intended mostly for researchers, but suitable for graduate-level courses. Includes lots of results found only in research papers, and some of them appear proved here for the first time.

Includes an extensive list of references. Just be careful with some typos.

If you are interested in hypercomplex analysis read also the books by Brackx et al, Delanghe et al, and Guerlebek & Sproessig.

This is an important book whose title, unfortunately, reveals little of its contents. The subject is a rigorous formulation of classical electrodynamics and relativistic quantum mechanics in terms of complex quaternions. The latter form a mutidimenional algebra extending the complex numbers and possessing powerful generalizations of Cauchy's integral formulae. Although there are several books on the market using Clifford algebras (including complex quaternions) in mathematical physics, this book is distinguished in several ways. Most such books stop with the albegra, while the book under review also contains much rigorous analysis, including the "integral representations" of the title. Specialzing to complex quaternions (instead of considering general Clifford algebras) leaves ample freedom to describe the chosen physics while allowing the development of powerful new methods. The connections with classical results by Moisil, Theodorescu and others are emphasized, helping to motivate and orient the mathematical reader.

Though Major General James Grant's name appears in many early histories of Florida, he has been remembered primarily for one speech he delivered in Parliament in 1775 that disparaged American military might. In this first full-scale biography of him, Nelson establishes Grant as an intelligent participant in the political and military events of his age.

As the first royal governor of British colonial Florida (1763-73), Grant practically created the colony once it was secured from Spain at the end of the Seven Years' War. His deliberate cultivation of friendships in the neighboring colonies of Georgia and South Carolina is part of the annals of royal administration, and he left behind a record of balanced, careful leadership. Even after he returned to Great Britain, where he represented Scottish constituencies in Parliament, he maintained an interest in Florida's fate, not least because he held tracts of land in East Florida that yielded profits from indigo.

Using previously neglected Grant papers at Ballindalloch Castle in Scotland, as well as better-known materials, Nelson documents the roots of Grant's personality and ambitions, producing a work of interest for scholars of the American Revolution and of military history, as well as early Florida and 18th-century British history.

Homage to the Fat General.......2006-10-22

Paul David Nelson does seem to make a solid living at chronicling the lives of secondary figures of the American Revolution. Yet one can not ignore his works. There are few biographers with his skill and ability.

Nelson's look at the life of James Grant proves useful and readable. Grant remains one of those obscure English figures who popped up all over North America in the 18th century. A proud son of Scotland, Grant worked his way up the military ladder after service in Europe. During the French and Indian war, Grant would lead one failed mission at Fort Duquesne (which would lead to his capture), a more succesful one in South Carolina against the Creeks, and spend time in the islands. From 1763 until 1771, Grant served as an able governor of East Florida. After his service in Saint Augustine, Grant headed to England where he served in Parliment before serving as a major general in the American Revolution. While retaining a low opinion of the militia, Grant did see some success as one of his friend William Howe's chief tactical officers, planning the battles of Brooklyn and White Plains though he never quite was able to land the knockout blow. Having said that, Grant's star rose after Henry Clinton's fell with Howe (for a detailed analysis of the odd relationship of Howe and Clinton, see Wilcox's classic "Portrait of a General"). After Howe was recalled, Grant did excellent work for his cause at St. Lucia.

The only real problem is the book seems a bit too short at points. The Florida years for example seem rather rushed. Otherwise, Nelson shows how a Scottish second son could rise to prominence in 18th century England. Nelson is able to catch Grant's personality to some extent. This obese soldier liked the high life and could be stubborn and somewhat cantakerous yet still something of a social creature. Nelson also did a great deal of work with the primary sources. While Grant may be more than a bit obscure, he does come to life in this excellent, though short, biography.

I have read the book and absoultly loved it. I passed it on to other friends and it is so inspirational that you want people to know what she has been through. I know her personally and have to say, I don't know anyone as strong willed as her. She has a 13 year old daughter (a miricle from God) and does her best to see that she doesn't miss a thing of her growing up.
Gina gives much hope to others that anything can be overcome by the Grace of God. She has bad days and needs to rest reguraly but some of the things she is able to do inspires me myself.
Her husband is a God send to her and is so good to and for her.
People need to read this book and know that things that look so uncurable can be. I love her as a friend and sometimes envy her. This story tells of a brave little girl and a strong family, Christian family and what the power of prayer and strong will can do. Put this book out where people can see it and want to read it. It's a wonderful read.

Excellent!.......2002-04-18

The book takes the reader through the experiences only a patient could have endured, I was moved by the emotional highs and lows not only Gina experienced but her family as well. I have had friends and family go through the trials that Cancer and its treatment put them through but seeing them through the eyes of the patient brings an in depth understanding you could find nowhere else. I would recommend the book for anyone, dealing with an illness or not, if only to get a better perspective on the family's ability to pull together.

Quick and fun read.......2005-12-07

This book was assigned for me in an American Literature of Nature and Place class in college. It is a great story of a man starting college at Reed, learning college and school isn't for him (now who in college hasn't thought that?), and moved on in the world to learn about nature and writing by living it. Not all environmental appreciation books are about people yelling and rebeling - this environmental book yields appreciation.

In the future, sophisticated electronic auction systems will enable institutional investors to bid directly in auctions, thereby bypassing primary dealers. Electronic trading systems will inevitably reshape secondary fixed-income markets. Underlying these challenges is the growing number of OECD sovereign issuers granting greater independence to debt management operations, accompanied by an increased emphasis on risk assessment and risk management.

The report also addresses the introduction of new instruments (index-linked bonds and derivatives), as well as policies related to investor relations.
