    Book Description

The polemic about the proper role of monetary policies and the appropriate functions of central banks has received renewed stimulus from a number of very current events. In Europe, the creation of a supranational central bank has been realized. In the United States and other industrial as well as emerging countries, the attributes and functions of central banks have been the subject of lengthy debates. Professional interest has also been centered recently on the issues of exchange regimes and the proper targeting for monetary policy. The various papers in this collection deal with this broad set of monetary and central banking issues, and draw implications of high relevance for post-socialist transition economies. These implications, however, are also important for other emerging markets and for advanced economies as well. The major subjects covered are classified within the following five categories: 1) The definitions, meaning, and results of central bank independence. 2) Goals and objectives of central bank operations. 3) Central banks and financial sector soundness. 4) Capital mobility, currency crises, and the role of capital controls. 5) The implications of European Monetary Unification for transition economies. This book collects the contributions of very well-known experts in monetary and central banking theory and presents the results of original research specially geared to understanding the implications of general economic theory for emerging and transitional economies. The significant and very rapid changes in the nature of good monetary transmission mechanisms require the adaptation of traditional theories to new realities. Such need is most pressing in transitional and emerging countries which lack experience and depth in their financial markets. In this book the particular requirements of these economies are integrated into the main macroeconomic monetary theories. The volume also includes analyses of a number of current issues such as capital flows, currency crises, currency boards, and the implications of European Monetary Union for transition economies.

    Book Description

Work culture, like society, is multicultural. To succeed, organizations must value the differences of a diverse population and the individuality of all people; employees and customers alike should be treated with dignity. Handling Diversity in the Workplace helps readers understand how words and actions in today's diverse workplace affect people and productivity and ultimately an organization's bottom line.

    1 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Time.......2007-06-02

Kay Dupont utterly bombs in this oversimplistic effort at trying to make an argument for cultural divsersity in the workplace.

Early on she attempts to convince the reader that this country is no longer a melting pot. Her example is that our society is like her mother's vegetable soup. While her mother's soup has an overall flavor or "feeling," she can still taste the potatoes, the carrots the meat, the beans and all the other vegetables. (The meat in vegetable soup? Never mind.) The "feeling" translates an awful lot like a melting pot to me. Dupont doesn't realize that her own example is still called vegetable soup instead of Mom's potato-carrot-meat-beans-and-all-the-other-vegetables soup.

Through such an example, she tries to convince us that there is no longer an American culture, nor that there is an "overall feeling" of being American. I truly beg to differ because African Americans, or those descended from America, Europe, or Asia are likely to speak a common cultural language that is unknown to outsiders who speak English. In other words, there is one dominant culture that incorporates the contributions of cultures brought here and adopted and embraced by Americans.

She goes on to admonish different groups, telling blacks that modern day whites are not responsible for slavery, Native Americans must not blame their present coworkers for the way their ancestors treated them, and, here's the kicker, "Hispanics must forgive whites for the intolerable acts perpetrated at the Alamo." Didn't the Mexicans (Hispanics) actually wipe out the Texans (whites) at the Alamo?

It really makes you wonder who edited this mess.

Throughout this book, readers are told what they should do, without being given any rationale for doing it, other than it's the right thing to do. The author also ignores culture and language that have transcended various subcultures and ethnicities that make one American.

This book might turn you into an opponent of diversity rather than one of its advocates.

    Really, don't waste your time.

5 out of 5 stars The most complete and accurate book on the Pearl.......2001-09-24

This book is the best single reference on humanity's long-love affair with this unique gem: the pearl. Information on the pearl is given by time period (up to the early 20th Century) and by pearl producing region/country.
If you love pearls (or are in the process of knowing about them), this book is definitely a must have. It has it all: scientific facts, pearl oyster biology and history. Incredibly well written.

    5 out of 5 stars Exhaustive Resource.......2000-04-25

This book has everything that one would want to know about pearls. It includes the pearl's cultural and natural history, commerce, industrial and medical uses, methods of pearl gathering, lists of famous pearls, ancient legends about pearls, (black and white) pictures of pearls, and portraits of royalty with their pearls.

Since this book was written in 1906, the values of pearls are outdated, and the pre-metric measurements used are confusing.

This is the best and most useful resource on pearls that I have discovered.

            5 out of 5 stars AWESOME BOOK.......2007-06-08

An excellent first hand narrative. Well written. After reading it, I thought that most vietnam war movies that have been made must have stolen ideas from this book. A beautiful example of a person coming full circle on the realization of the reality of war. I highly reccommend this book, I could not put it down.

5 out of 5 stars DMZ Diary Moving, Important.......2001-11-30

TJ Kelly's DMZ Diary is a stunning account of his Vietnam service. Kelly writes with honesty and intelligence, allowing readers to accompany him on his journeys into combat with his fellow Marines. Kelly recalls stories of heroism and horror from Vietnam that will move the most jaded military historian. His stories of life away from combat provide humour and relief from the ever-present tension of the war. In DMZ Diary the author reveals his transformation from a gung-ho new guy to a seasoned veteran. The story of this transformation is an important addition to the history of the American experience in Vietnam.

4 out of 5 stars Beutifully written, detailed.......2000-04-06

Dr. Donoso has written a wonderful account of his medical experiences in refuge camps in Malawi. His writing style is engaging for both the medical professional and the layman. He has enough detail (and footnotes if you really want them) so that you can look critically at his efforts. In addition, at times, his writing is fluid and even poetic. I gave the book only 4 stars because at times the translation was a little rough. I'll bet that this book is really beautiful in the original version. Anyway, if you are interested in the details of delivery of healthcare under trying circumstances, get this book and read it.

5 out of 5 stars An Eloquent Book.......1999-11-29

An Eloquent Book by a Doctor in the 1999 Nobel Peace Prize Winning Organization, Les Medicines Sans Frontieres

Across the Footsteps of Africa by Dr. Benjamin Puertas-Donoso

Les Medicines Sans Frontieres have won the prestigious and much deserved Nobel Peace Prize for 1999. I would like to congratulate them and praise their dedicated doctors. I was especially touched by this eloquent and beautiful memoir of an Ecuadorian doctor who worked with the American Refugee Committee in Malawi and with Les Medicines Sans Frontieres in Mozambique near the end of their long, brutal civil war in 1993 and 1994.

Dr. Puertas is a gifted writer. The refugee camps where Dr. Puerts worked were not pretty places. But Dr. Puertas took the inconveniences, risks and deprevations of the work in stride. His warm personality bursting with optimism, energy and humility, not only charmed his refugees and coworkers, but captivates his readers as well. However, of course, his success in taking on the gargantuan task of saving lives in wretched conditions was not due to charm alone. In fact he has a genius for organization and administration.

Dr. Puertas does not focus the book on his own accomplishments or dwell on the dirt on the floor in the hospitals. His book is very intelligent and shares with the reader a little of the history of the countries he worked in, their governments and politics and he gives the reader a respectful and balanced idea of what the people, the food and the native cultures are really like. He was very impressed with the good natured people and their incredible strength to endure each day. He traveled quite a bit in the region, met a lot of interesting people, and is a good travel guide for the reader sitting comfortably in his armchair.

Years ago I too lived and worked in Africa. I served as a Peace Corps teacher in Ethiopia. I was teaching English to children who were starving, with many unnamable and unreatable diseases and living without adequate shelter. I can vouch that every word in Dr. Puertas' book resonated true to my experiences in Africa. Africans take their hard life pretty much in stride, but it is indeed very hard. It is organizations like Medicines Sans Frontieres that bring the doctors with skills and abilities to make things happen to improve their lives. Dr. Puertas is to be commended for giving his time and gifts to humanitarian efforts and also for writing such an inspiring and exceptional account of it. It is Dr. Puertas' great gift as a writer to make this story, necessarily suffused with so much human pain and suffering, a great triumph to the human spirit and a romantic adventure. Dr. Puertas is so likeable, his narrative creates suspense because the reader really cares about what happens to him. This book would make a great movie!

5 out of 5 stars The reality of the african health system.......1999-06-25

This book's first edition in spanish showed me the crude reality of the african health system. This delightful narrative experience of Dr. Puertas' incredible adventure in Africa is very well written. It's contents may prove useful to anybody in the medicine, public health, and medical anthropology fields, especially if related to third world countries.

            great book

5 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK FOR THOSE IN THE MEDICAL PROFESION OR OUTSIDE........1999-05-06

I am a student at Universidad San Francisco de Quito, where Dr. Puertas is a teacher, and I was lucky enough to be able to read his book's first edition, in Spanish. It is a great book, both for people in the Medical Profesion, as for everyone else. It has very touching stories of survival in Africa, as well as interesting adventures, and a very useful description of a Doctor's work in areas of such poverty and suffering. It is for sure a must read for anyone interested in Public Health, or who wants to read something real, yet different.

            Book Description

"A very fine biography of a key figure who for so long deservedly stood as a beacon on the international left for the way he articulated and redefined socialist politics."
            —Leo Panitch

Ralph Miliband (1924-94) played a key role within the political and intellectual community of the Left, both in Britain and in North America, where he held several visiting professorships. The Socialist Register, which he founded (with John Saville) and edited for 30 years, brought him into contact with left-wing intellectuals throughout the world.

Based on exclusive access to Miliband's extensive personal papers, and supplemented by interviews, this book provides an interpretative history of the evolution, debates and dilemmas of socialists from the Second World War until the collapse of communism.

5 out of 5 stars Portrait of a left wing intellectual.......2005-01-05

An excellent account of debates within the Left and of Ralph Miliband's role within them. It is also a good portrait of his personality. If in a few places it is hard going, that is not the fault of Newman, but of the complexity of the issues (e.g. in Miliband's controversy with Nicos Poulantzas.)

Miliband was insistent that genuine Marxist socialism must be combined with genuine democracy, and he relentlessly tested both capitalism and Soviet-style dictatorship against this criterion. This often left him isolated on the Left, at times even among his closest friends and collaborators, and the book brings out his occasional depressions and self-questioning. Newman, though obviously an admirer of Miliband, also here and there expresses reservations about aspects of Miliband's intellectual positions and practical strategy. But if, from time to time, there are suggestions of Miliband's limitations, the final chapter is a magnificent exposition of his strengths.

2 out of 5 stars Indulgent review of marginal egotist.......2003-07-11

This book on Ralph Miliband, one of the key figures of the New Left, gives us useful insights into why that movement failed.

Newman (like Miliband a Professor of Politics) tells us that Miliband was happy `to speak, debate and write political statements' but `found meetings and organisational work very tiresome' and found `organisation and discipline unacceptable'. Newman reveals the earth-shaking insignificance of the New Left's disputes at dinner-parties and seminars.

Not surprisingly, a New Left composed of egos like Miliband, E. P. Thompson and Tony Benn (who wrote in his 1985 Diary, "I'm always thrusting myself forward for publicity") could never work together. These `critical' intellectuals only agreed in seeing themselves as superior to the `ignorant' workers.

Newman tells us that by the mid-1960s Miliband had `come to the belief that a new Socialist Party would eventually need to be established ..." And he did as much as helping in `preparing the ground for the coming into being of a new party'! But did the New Left ever manage to found this new party?

In fact the New Left, just like the old left, adopted the tried and failed Fabian tactic of permeating the Labour party. The famed `independent Marxism' ended up as a marginal colony of social democracy.

At history's turning points, the New Left always supported the US government: it was for the CIA-backed counter-revolution in Hungary in 1956, against Vietnam's liberation of Cambodia from Pol Pot, and against the Soviet assistance to Afghanistan's only progressive government ever, which gave women equal rights and land to the peasants. At these crucial times, the New Left took the enemy's side, then moaned that the `left' was divided. It was always divorced from the working class, from the trade unions, from reality.

The New Left constantly whinged about the `left's disarray'. But what did its fragments all have in common? They rejected Leninist democratic centralism, by dishonestly caricaturing it as oppressive! In democratic centralist parties, the minority carries out the decisions of the majority, whereas the New Left always wanted minority rights, its rights, to trump the majority. Marxism without Leninism is playing without winning.

The New Left's endless projects for renewal, unification, realignment, and saving the Labour party, are all part of the confusion of thought that alone has held back the British working class for so long.

If them's his lordship's orders, mem, another voice answered, they'll have to be kep', I suppose. But, if you'll excuse the liberty, mem, as it's between ourselves, servant or no servant, all I have to say is, it's a cruel thing,--parting that poor, pretty, young widdered cre'tur' from her own flesh and blood, and him such a little beauty and a nobleman born.

This is an example of the difficulties of shopping online.
I had read the book several years ago and wanted to give a volume as a gift. This printing is unacceptable - unpleasant font, cramped pages and flimsy binding. You will do better with the purchase of a used hardcover volume

              5 out of 5 stars A Gentle Story.......2007-06-05

I have always loved "A Little Princess" and "The Secret Garden," but I had not even heard of this book until recently. It is the simple and gentle story of how a little boy's innocence and belief that everyone is good transforms his miserly and cruel grandfather into an admirable man. If you enjoy Burnett's other stories, this one is not to be missed.

5 out of 5 stars Right up there with "A Little Princess" and "The Secret Garden".......2007-03-21

When I was little, two of my favorite books were A Little Princess and The Secret Garden (HarperClassics) by Frances Hodgson Burnett. When I grew up, they were still favorites. So a year ago when I was buying them for my little cousin, and I noticed "Little Lord Fauntleroy", I was astounded. How did I miss such a gem?

The story of little Cedric who warms his old grandfather's heart is beautifully written and quite touching. There is also a lesson to be learned, as we watch what Cedric does with his newfound wealth. What would you do if you were suddenly gifted with such a fortune? This story is perfect for anyone who enjoyed "A Little Princess" or "The Secret Garden"!

              1 out of 5 stars A Little Disappointment.......2006-05-19

I wanted this for a long time, and finally received it yesterday from my Amazon Wishlist.

This is the first audio book that I actually find difficult to listen to. The sound quality of this CD is so poor and scratchy that I could be listening to an old radio broadcast. I do not feel as if I am sitting in a room listening to a wonderful story unfold...it's more like I'm listening to a conversation on a cell phone. It actually hurts my ears to listen to this recording.

Every time the reader says any word with the letter "s" the hiss goes right to your brain. I'm not kidding. I still have a headache.

4 out of 5 stars A boy who changed his grandfather.......2005-10-14

I got to know this book "Little Lord Fauntleroy" through the President of SGI, Daisaku Ikeda. This book tells us how a pure, innocent and kind-hearted boy, Ceddie, changed his ill-tempered grandfather. Little Ceddie's mother played a very important role in bringing up his son into such a good character, who always look at people's good points. This good quality of Little Ceddie is what a society need.

                      Book Description

Ram Mohan Ray is called the "Father of Modern India" in recognition of his epoch-making social, educational, and political reforms. Bruce Robertson argues that Ray's intellectual and spiritual roots have been misunderstood even by those who have been most lavish in their praise. Made a hero
for standing up to the British government in politics, his memory has been tainted by an ill-informed consensus, namely that he gave in to Europeans on matters of religion.
Nothing could have been further from the truth, Robertson argues. While Ray's political legacy may be said to have endured, his enormous contribution to modern Indian religious sectarian dialogue, where his greatest originality may be found, is sadly forgotten. Robertson argues that Ray set the
agenda for modern India in his vision of a self-determining, modern, pluralistic society founded upon the Upanishadic principles of freedom of sadhana and one rule of law for all.

                              Book Description

Down East Yankee John Gould, age ninety-two, has spent most of the last century observing and writing about the human condition. Now he presents a whole new perspective on life as he leads us into the brave new world of the assisted-living facility. Charming, sarcastic, despairing, flip, taciturn, erudite, and altogether wonderful--with a razor sharp wit and a knack for turning a phrase--Mr. Gould is an American original and a perfect tour guide. Whether he's complaining to management about his apartment windows that don't open or socializing with the other "inmates" at happy hour; whether wondering why they put a napkin over the stone-cold bread at dinner or taking comfort in the memories ("making do with the reruns") of his loving and eccentric collection of old friends and colleagues from Maine, Mr. Gould proves that you can write a funny book about a serious subject, namely, how we treat our elderly.

5 out of 5 stars John Gould has prepared me for my turn in 'Rhapsody Home'.......2002-06-19

I purchased my copy of John Gould's "Rhapsody Home" when vacationing on midcoast Maine near his hometown of Rockland. Knowing that Gould was somewhere nearby made the reading that much more meaningful for me. I also related in these ways: There may be a 'Rhapsody Home' in my not too distant future. Also, unable to contain my enthuisiasm for the book, I read select passages aloud to my wife who retired as the head RN at a 'Rhapsody Home.' The nature of her responses validated for me the authenticity of John Gould's rhapsodic musings.

4 out of 5 stars Gruffly charming, and wise.......2000-12-30

Odds are this is the best book by a nonagenarian you are likely to read this year. Gould, a Down East Yankee and columnist for the Christian Science Monitor since 1942, offers a collection of short commentaries from an assisted living center. The book isn't simply a humorous indictment of the foibles and peculiarities of life in a retirement home (though there is plenty of that, from comments about food to the saga of the unopenable window and the familiar refrain "There is nothing to be done about it"). The author ranges across all his 92 years to draw on memories of doctors, raising bees with his Grandfather, and the perfect tomato.

This is a great book for reading out loud, my wife and I found -- the sentences tend to be short and simple, belying the emotional nuances and complexity of the thoughts underneath. The author is not a simple, genteel sort, despite the appearance of his prose. There are passages on the joys of farting humor, reproductions of the light verse with which he lampooned the failures of the management (these never survived more than three minutes on the bulletin board because they "offended the staff"), and a truly fierce (but nevertheless funny) indictment of the insurance industry.

Think of this book as Robert Fulghum in a retirement home and you'll be close to it.

5 out of 5 stars A must for anyone who is, knows, or plans to be, an elder........2000-12-14

A long term care and assisted living administrator for manyyears, this book amused me, unnerved me, angered me. I hooted withlaughter and got choked up with sympathy. A gifted wordsmith and storyteller both, Gould spun a tale I couldn't put down. I thoroughlyenjoyed digesting his delicious words and phrases. Educational, entertaining and absorbing; a must read for any aged reader. LindaLaPointe,MRA,...
