When I first saw the book cover/title, Thoughtware, on the Amazon.com website, I was very fascinated. It brought back sweet memories of a part of my corporate life.

It was back in the late 80's that I had the privilege to be associated professionally with two very innovative Swedish consultants: Jan-Erik Lundstrom and Leif Edvinsson. I was then working under them in the development of software for real-time man-machine communications, known as EYESCREAM, created by Jan-Erik. It was then that I believed Leif actuallly coined the term "Thoughtware" for the first time, as he had already delivered papers on it in international conferences. (Leif subsequently went on to co-author two excellent books, Intellectual Capital: Realising Your Company's True Value by Finding its Hidden Brainpower in March 1997, and Intellectual Capital: Navigating the New Business Landscape in June 1998. I would recommend readers to explore these two books, as they documented the pioneering knowledge management work at Scandia, the largest financial services group in Sweden.)

It was my initial experimentation work with EYESCREAM in the late 80's that I began my life-long journey in understanding the intricacies - and the idiosyncracies - of the human mind, in the context of strategy formulation and development. I started gathering all kinds of books, magazine articles, newsletters and research papers on the subject, to help in enhancing my life-long learning and real-world understanding.

In the mid-90s, came Amazon.com website, which actually helped me in sourcing the main bulk of the best books and other hard-to-get stuff on the brain/mind, learning, creativity, innovation, peak performance, change management, intellectual capital, strategic exploration, opportunity discovery, etc.

Now, back to the Thoughtware book, I must say this has become one of my favourite books. (Readers are welcome to explore some of my favourites in `Strategic Thinking Bookshelf,' `Opportunity Pathfinding Bookshelf,' `Visual Thinking Toolkits for Business,' and `Business Blindspots, Illusions Mind-sets & Paradigms' on the Amazom.com website).

Using the analogy of computer software, the authors of Thoughtware had very masterfully crafted a book in a creative and engaging style, with 3 major parts, against a smorgasbord of real-world business cases.:

Part 1: Context, introducing the performance drivers; Part 2: New Thoughtware, introducing the dynamics of intellectual capital; Part 3: Installation, introducing the installation framework for new thoughtware, involving 8 modules;

This is one good book which you just can't just read it in one go and put it on your shelf. You have to read it, think about it, reflect on it, synthesise it with your other reading stuffs, research your own experience, add what is specifically your own, come back to it and then plot out your next steps.

In a nut shell, let me recapitulate the essence of the book: What we do is rooted in our thoughtware. This is the ancestor of all our thinking and actions. The sum of the people's thinking in an organisation and their collective interaction is the mastermind of the organization's performance. It is the underlying platform on which every organization operates. First, change the thoughtware in our heads, and we will automatically change our behaviour. We can then move on to create capability to manage the future. We must constantly invest in new thoughtware, new operating platforms that become the foundation from which we generate learning, knowledge, innovation, change and growth.

The authors' contention in Thoughtware is exactly in line with the pioneering work of Edward de Bono, who wrote about the urgent need for FIRST ORDER THINKING in whatever we do, and who also coined the term 'LATERAL THINKING,' in the 70's. I enjoy reading and working with this Thoughtware book very much, and appreciate also the authors in affirming their book at the onset as "a work in progress." The human mind is too vast and too complex to be explored and understood completely, and then captured in a 200-page book. I expect the authors to come out with their new work soon.

A young man's opium adventure........2002-07-08

I really liked the mix of a story of a young man's first adventure away from country and family, and the technical information needed to cultivate the opium poppy. It gave me a sense of tranquility to his endeavor, not as if it were a clandestine operation. It spoke of the roots his and other families had in this way of life. Of course, it gives you all the information you need for your own adventure. I hope there is a sequel.

Way of an ornamentalist.......2000-02-10

A lovely tale of a young Chinese immigrant in South America offeres some insight to the "way of a Chinese Grower" and what the culture is like... The second half of the book goes into considerable detail as to how to cultivate the poppy, albeit on a quasi large-scale endeavor- not really for the ornamental grower. Excellent depth into pharmacologic properties, particularly chemical structure of medicinal components and traditional harvesting methods and tools.

This volume illustrates the extent to which the traditional distinction between biochemical and physiological processes is being obliterated by molecular biology. It can hardly be doubted that the revolution in cell and molecular biology is leading to core knowledge that provides an outline of the integrative and reductionist approach. We view this as the beginning of a new era, that of the integration of learning.
As in the preceding volumes, the choice of topics has been deliberate not only because of the need to keep the volume within reasonable bounds but also because of the need to avoid information over-load. Several relevant topics are dealt with in other modules; for example, the role of G proteins in transmembrane signalling is covered in the Membranes and Cell Signalling module (i.e., Volume 7). Omissions are of course inevitable but they are minor. A case in point is the subject of phosphatases, the treatment of which does not take into account calcineurin. One of the key functions of this Ca2+ -activated protein phosphatase that is also regulated by calmodulin is to desphosphorylate voltage-dependent Ca2+ channels. The mere recognition of such omissions before or after consulting textbooks and journals should be a spur to a more complete discussion by the student of the subject in a small group teaching setting.

Good way to cell chemistry.......2003-01-28

This book has some good title and context about ion transport across the cell membrane. Understanding of ions transport is very essentail way to study of cell membrane functions and its responses to stimuli. It is very good for any biological and medical students that have well known information about ionic events in and out of the cell. Some students don't suppose how ions act and transport across the cytoplasmic membranes. This book make better idea for ions function and ionic behavior in cells. Chapers of the book have well arrangement and good figures. I recommend it for study.

A book of one of the geatest heroes of the 20th century........2005-07-16

This book explores the aspects of the life of Emiliano Zapata, one of my heroes and inspirations. It covers everything about the man, with plenty of pictures that give a great view into the life of the people of the Revolution and of Zapata himself. The book also talks about the alleged legend that Zapata did not die, but in fact survived the attack at Chinameca. This book vividly explains his life and that in fact Emiliano Zapata did not die, but lives on today, in the people who are still fighting for the government to return the land that was illegally taken (The Zapatistas in Chiapas are an example of those still fighting). There was a small quote under a picture of an army that said: "Why was it that they followed him?" and after completing this book, i understood why so many people respected the man enough to not question his actions and his generosity and follow him to fight against a great injustice. Honestly, this is a great book and a worthwhile read for anyone interested in the man and legacy that is Zapata.

Mexican Revolution.......2001-02-12

This book is part on a series of books about Mexican who participated in the Mexican Revolution. It has a great mix of photographs and tales that help you better understand that piece of history.

An excelent analysis of Zapata's life and philosophy.......2000-06-20

Enrique Krauze is well known for his series of books about the political power in Mexico since the last century to our days. In the Zapata's book, Krauze makes a very serious analysis of the life of this "caudillo" of the Mexican Revolution that nowadays is a symbol of social justice and in general: mexican socialism. Do you want to know more about the current "guerrilla" of the Liberation Army of Zapata (EZLN) in Chiapas? You need to read this book to know the true and imparcial phylosophy of Zapata, a person that shaped and still shapes the Mexican History in the last century. More than a simple biography, an excellent way to understand why the Mexicans love and will love forever their land.

Ernest Gruening is perhaps best known for his vehement fight against U.S. military involvement in Vietnam, where he set himself apart by casting one of two votes against the Tonkin Gulf Resolution in 1964. However, as Robert Johnson shows in this political biography, it's Gruening's sixty-year public career in its entirety that provides an opportunity for historians to explore continuity and change in dissenting thought, on both domestic and international affairs, in twentieth-century America.

Gruening's outlook on domestic affairs took shape in the intellectual milieu of Progressive-era Boston, where he first devoted attention to foreign affairs in crusades against aggressive U.S. policies toward Haiti and Mexico. In the late 1920s, he was appointed editor of a reform newspaper in Portland, Maine, and moved from there to The Nation. By the early 1930s he had built a national reputation as an expert on Latin American affairs, prompting Franklin Roosevelt to appoint him chief U.S. policymaker for Puerto Rico. In 1939, Roosevelt named Gruening governor of Alaska, where for fourteen years he played a key role in the political development of the territory. In 1958 Alaskan voters elected him to the U.S. Senate, where he articulated a dissenting outlook in inter-American affairs, foreign aid policy, and the relationship between the federal government, the economy, and the issue of monopoly.

Throughout his life, Gruening struggled to reconcile his ideological perspective, which drew on dissenting ideas long embedded in American history, with a desire for political effectiveness.
